Re: Apple Care Question

2004-03-01 Thread Geoffrey Loeffler

That is true for some companies but this is why you want to call
Applecare and maybe also check their website for international
coverage information. It looks like they do have a number for
Applecare in Korea so I am assuming they would cover it there.
Do not assume anything You better be sure and call Apple
Care and have them send you a letter saying you will have coverage
even in Korea or if you travel to Korea. If you do not, you may have
provided them a wiggle hole out of the repairs.

Apple Care has become IMHO and by my experience very bad at
customer relations. ie., the logic boards in the iBooks built between
2002 to 2003. These people complained, wrote Apple about the problems
and suffered for years with crummy built computers or had to pay for
repairs to get it done right. Now Apple has come around and is
replacing the logic boards of these iBooks, under threat of law suit.
Not the warm Apple I used to know.
My experience a Pismo with 4 months left on Apple Care. When
I called to set up a shipping date, the first thing the Apple Care
guy said was, we do not cover spilled liquids in power books. Yes of
course, but no liquid was spilled in this Pismo, he said I just have
to make that clear..
Sent it in and they said, guess what:

Apple says a liquid sometime in the last 6 months was spilled
into the power book, it's not covered, we will fix it but will cost
you $1,000.00 to have us fix it. I went right to the top of Apple
Care. Gwendlyne Wells head of Apple World wide Customer Care. She was
rude and rather crude. She should care less and actually lied about
things they had done to another computer I sent in at a week before
not covered and I had paid for those repairs.. Except the lies fell
through because the techs left little bar codes on the parts they
claim they never touched..

So on a lap top get it, even a iMac I probably would as the
quality of the products are getting cheaper to keep prices down. Just
make sure you get in writing what they say on the phone. The usually
send out a welcome to Apple Care letter with your machines ID and
your Apple Care Number.
Good luck
Geoff

I have had Applecare on both my previous macs and will be buying it for
my Powerbook in March.
With Applecare, you get a 2 year extension on your warranty to bring it
to a total of 3 years and this includes 3 years of phone support. When
you first buy a Mac, you get 90 days of what they call complementary
phone support.
In the box - you normally get next to nothing. Just a registration
sheet and usually a disk with a light version of Techtools pro.
You're right - it is a lot of money but it has always been well worth
it to me as both my computers needed extensive repairs which would have
cost far more than the cost that I paid for the Applecare warranty.

Wallstreet and Brother HL-1240 Printer

2004-03-01 Thread JOHN.E.ABRAHAM
Hello Listers,

I apologize in advance for the length of this listing.

Could someone help me with a problem I am encountering.

I have a Wallstreet 233 MHz (II) that I am trying to link to a
Brother HL-1240 Lazer printer with a Belkin 2 port USB 2 card bus
card.

I downloaded the Apple 1.4.1 card support application and loaded plus
the printer driver that came with the printer. No Mac software
driver came with the Belkin card as the Apple card support
application should take care of this. Other listers have had success
with this make of card so compatibility should be OK.

The card is seen by APS but with the printer switched on no printer
is seen. Chooser shows the printer icon on the left but when clicked
on nothing is seen on the right. I have looked on the Brother Web
site for any additional info but could only find an up dated driver
so I downloaded this.

I tried to load the new driver and also tried to reinstall the driver
for card bus support. Unfortunately when I try to install any
software a dialog box appears, informing me that no software can be
installed whilst br-background is running and to quit this
application and retry.

As this must refer to the Brother printer I have searched for some
time to find what is running this as br_background is an extension.
I had no success so I decided to trash every thing that referred to
the Brother printer, this went OK until I tried to trash
br_backdround. Another box appeared informing me that as other
applications were using it it could not be thrown away.

So until I resolve this I am unable to make progress in resolving the
USB-printer problem or installing any other software at all.

So any help is appreciated.

Re: Memory for Wallstreet

2004-03-01 Thread Wayne Schneck
Be careful about the memory in the Wallstreet. I was only able to get
256 total (2 - 128 chips, Kingston) ram work in my Wallstreet 233,
which also had a Powerlogix 466 upgrade card installed. There have been
many listers that reported successfully using the larger 512 chips and
some reporting 2 - 512 working. Since Apple only certified the
Wallstreet for 192 mb ram, you are really on your own. Most reputable
vendors will take the memory back either in exchange or credit.

As far as I know, no one ever offered an answer why some people could
and some couldn't make the higher ram work.

Re: AppleCare Question

2004-03-01 Thread Al Poulin
I am not saying that anybody should or should not buy AppleCare. And the
testimonials here about saving hundreds and even close to a thousand dollars
on repairs are very impressive.

But there is another way to look at this. AppleCare must be a money making
business for Apple. Would anybody believe that Apple loses money on their
AppleCare coverage at the prices they charge? I doubt that. I think Apple
makes money on AppleCare. There must be many more people who buy AppleCare
and do not use it for repairs than those who do.

So I believe it boils down to whether you want to self-insure your Mac or
not.

Possibly. i had problem installing (it wouldn't install at all) and
running (random crashes) Panther with 512MB installed, pulled the 256
out of the top slot and put in a 128 and the problems all went away.

Re: Wallstreet and Brother HL-1240 Printer

2004-03-01 Thread JOHN.E.ABRAHAM
Hello Listers,

I have resolved the br_background running problem that prevented me
from loading any new software. So I have reinstall Apple 1.4.1 USB
card driver and the new Brother printer driver version 1.7.2. I
downloaded from the Brother site. Unfortunately I still have the
same problem APS sees the card bus card but not the location of the
printer. Chooser has the printer icon in the left box but when
clicked on, no connecting port appears in the left box.

Could this be and issue where the printer will only work with a
computer with a built in USB port.

Any feed back will be greatly appreciated.

John Abraham.

I apologize in advance for the length of this listing.

Could someone help me with a problem I am encountering.

I have a Wallstreet 233 MHz (II) that I am trying to link to a
Brother HL-1240 Lazer printer with a Belkin 2 port USB 2 card bus
card.

I downloaded the Apple 1.4.1 card support application and loaded
plus the printer driver that came with the printer. No Mac software
driver came with the Belkin card as the Apple card support
application should take care of this. Other listers have had
success with this make of card so compatibility should be OK.

The card is seen by APS but with the printer switched on no printer
is seen. Chooser shows the printer icon on the left but when clicked
on nothing is seen on the right. I have looked on the Brother Web
site for any additional info but could only find an up dated driver
so I downloaded this.

No! No need to do that. You should first try to find a web site that shows
pictures on how to replace memory in a Lombard (or a Wallstreet or a Pismo
since they are very similar).

Basically, you pop open the keyboard, remove the magnetic shield and
carefully extract the processor daughtercard if you need to replace the
lower slot memory module, which is underneath the processor daughtercard. If
you only want to replace the upper memory module, then there is no need to
remove the daughtercard as, when you remove the shield, the memory module
will be right there, next to the processor.

Do you have a USB keyboard or mouse you can plug in to check the
operation of the USB. This is the process I use. A keyboard or
mouse is best as support for these are built in. My gut feel is that
you still have a USB card problem, APS should show the printer
otherwise. I've had the best luck installing the USB card drivers
from the OS 9 disk. If you run it after an install it will give you
the option of adding or deleting parts.

Users, Partitions, and Panther Question

2004-03-01 Thread markemmanuel
Hi guys.

I just installed Panther in the first 6GB of hard drive space and the
rest is empty waiting to be used for something. I really would like to
move the User folder into the second partition kind of like when I was
messing with Linux a few years ago. My problem is that I have no idea
how to set up MacOS X to use the entire partition to put user folders
into it and when I make new accounts it would create the user space in
the second partition. I've been doing it the dirty way and using Net
info for the two users I've made so far. So now, in netinfo, the I
changed home from '/Users/username' to /Volumes/volumename/username'.
Ideally, I'd like to see volumename mounted at root like a DVD or a
floppy would. So, the file path would like like this... '/volumename'.
 Any helpful advise? Thanks.

getting rid of menubar bluetooth icon

2004-03-01 Thread Hal
OK, I have another odd question. I Carbon Copy Clone'd my data from my
12 AlBook onto my iBook G3/900. The iBook was unhappy booting from the
system folder from the AlBook, so I did an archive and install and
reinstalled Panther. Everything is working fine now, but I have a
Bluetooth logo with a line through it in the menubar, leftover from the
AlBook, which has Bluetooth. When I click on it it says Bluetooth not
available. I know this.

Anyone know what I need to delete or change to get rid of this icon in
the menubar?

Any info is appreciated.

-Hal
