You can also try and remove com.apple.loginwindow.plist.

PB G4 fan replacement, options?

2004-05-12 Thread Mikael Byström
I'll soon have a PB G4/400 that have a fully functional fan, but it won't
spin up in time, sitting quiet for most of the time. Therefore the
machine gets quite hot.

Anyone know how to make it spin up sooner? Reset the motherboard/
detectors somehow?
My first thought though, was to replace the fan with a thirdparty fan
that have its own heat detector that could lie close to the processor
perhaps, like in a desktop PC. But what kind of fan is it? I couldn't
find any info on that in the repair manual.
Where is the best international source for laptop fans and information
about them? Suggestions are very welcome.

I have a G3 Pismo. I'm pretty happy with it, but I do envy the screen
space on my wife's 15 Al-book. I also wouldn't mind a bit of extra
speed, but not sure how much bang for the buck I'd get to upgrade.
I've been looking at the G4 667. Is the difference between the earlier
ones and the later DVI models significant? It looks like it might be.
How would the Ti 667 compare with putting a 500mhz Daystar G4 in my
Pismo?
Or maybe just sit tight with the Pismo for a while--it's still a very
nice machine.
--
One of the nice things you'd get with a 667mhz TiBook is the 16MB
graphics chip. That lets Quartz Extreme take over, making OSX seem a
little quicker. You give up expansion bays, but if you get one with a
combo drive that's important.
I don't know about the Firewire performance, but I can tell you that
with a 500mhz TiBook the FW is really slow. I mean way slower than
Pismo, slower even than a Lombard with a PC card.

Re: iBook key pops off

2004-05-12 Thread Sharon Kantanie
Thanks to everyone for the advice. Unfortunately, the shift keycap has
a metal bar, and fitting it into the matching area on the keyboard
proved extra tricky. I found a picture on the Apple website of the
procedure for replacing a keycap on a Powerbook, and the area where the
bar fits in seems more substantial. On the iBook, there are just little
metal loops where the bar slips in. I can get the keycap into the
loops, but something just doesn't seem right. At least I've established
that I'm pretty sure nothing is broken.

I'm planning on throwing myself at the mercy of our local Mac specialty
store and hoping they'll fix it on the spot without charge.

It makes me miss the keyboard of my Wallstreet II. It seemed more
subsantial, and I can't imagine keys just popping off like this.

Pismo pram battery, DIY ?

2004-05-12 Thread Jeff Greffe
Hey there !

I was wondering if it could be possible to construct an homemade Pram
battery for my (still) dead powerbook (but working on it ...). It has
been sitting on a shelf for almost 2 years, not connected and no
battery in the bay, so it must be pretty dead now.

I looked on the net and ebay, prices are ranging from 10$ for a very
used one, to 100$ for a new one !!
and since I currently reside in Taiwan at the moment, my resources to
find one here are pretty limited and shipping would be prohibitive for
such a small item. Macs are not too popular around here !

So, what are the specs for that little battery ? I am sure there is
somebody that already tried this !

Thanks !

Yep, that's it.

You could try changing the channel to the other end, like a 1,2, or 3. This
will move the frequency farther away from where it is now, and maybe farther
from an interfering device. However, another device may have nothing to do
with your problem.

When you change the frequency, you will just have to re-select the ABS out
of the wireless network list on your computer and log in again for it to
work.

haven't backed up your data, you might try the freezer trick, to temp mount

I think I agree with you--it probably isn't worth upgrading the Pismo.
They tend to sell on eBay for around $500. The Ti 667s go from $900 to
$1100 so putting a $300 upgrade into the Pismo takes it up near what
the TiBooks run if you get a good price.
I guess the question I'm more curious about is how much the TiBooks
improved with the DVI models--they got an additional 1MB level 3 cache,
and the VRAM doubled to 32MB. Plus more pixels on the screen. There
seems to be about a hundred bucks premium for the DVI 667s. Anyone with
experience or knowledge of how the older and newer models stack up?

I just picked up this from slashdot :

http://apple.slashdot.org/apple/04/05/10/1024231.shtml?tid=137tid=180

I'm not sure what we are allowe to say about it.

These ones Apple (so far as I would guess) won't care about - they are
photos done by the people at PBFixit, and not copies of the Apple Tech
Repair Manuals (which Apple will hound you down about via their legal
eagles, undoubtedly). Apple's always been VERY protective about their
(copyrighted) Tech Repair Manuals, and I know in the past even mentioning
a link which was to a place with the Apple TRM's was highly a no-no!

But some sites have sprung up where people have taken their own photos,
written their own descriptions of the take-apart procedures for various
models. Since *how* a computer is taken apart (SFAIK) is not
copyrightable, Apple's objection is to copying their intellectual
properties (as in, the actual photos and descriptions of the steps to be
taken). Heck, if you give the parts different names, you might even be
able to try to claim your procedure was a copyrighted work, I suppose...
;-)

And here's another site with directions that Apple hasn't told to take
down (pick your PB model, up through the TiBooks):

http://www.powerbooktech.com/knowledge.htm

My (non-legal) $0.02 about the matter,

Jim Rohde

Batteries in Taipei

2004-05-12 Thread Stuart Saunders
Hi Jeff,
Are you in Taipei?
You could try Guang Wha Tsang Tswan which is the area at the start of
Pa Deh Rd. Million computer shops there. As you go up Pa De, when you
get to the overpass, there is a building on the right next to the
motorbike parking area. Try B2 or B3 in this building for parts.

Good luck.
Stuart.

Thanks !

Jeff

Woe Befalls SuperDuper, CarbonCopyCloner, and Disk Utility

2004-05-12 Thread illovox
Tried cloning again and again via SuperDuper, CarbonCopyCloner, and Disk
Utility. Frustrating: All I encountered were hangs, errors and issues
preventing cloning from that Pismo to that Ti. Gave up and now trying
Synchronize X! Plus. Latter seems to be working. Disk won't boot but let's
see what a round or two of Permission Repairs and maybe an Archive and
Install will do.

So, any clues as to what causes CCC to hang and how to stop it? C ould the
speed of the HD's be a factor? My Pismo has a 7200rpm drive, while the Ti
has a 4200 rpm drive. Any ideas?

Run

Firewire Sucks on a Ti500?

One of the nice things you'd get with a 667mhz TiBook is the 16MB
graphics chip. That lets Quartz Extreme take over, making OSX seem a

I don't know about the Firewire performance, but I can tell you that
with a 500mhz TiBook the FW is really slow. I mean way slower than
Pismo, slower even than a Lombard with a PC card.

I dodn't know that. Why is that?
