Panther and hidden desktop file- solved

2004-08-17 Thread kaldav
Thanks to all who suggested ways to delete the File on the Desktop
titled Hidden when using Internet Explorer. Don suggested deleting
the Cookies and that solved the problem. Thanks, Don.

Good advice but he said I see a file... so it is not hidden. if a

persistant.

Following up on my previous post, on a tip from an Apple discussion I
stuck the Lombard DVD/CD drive that wouldn't close into my Pismo in
OS X 10.3.4, and it closed just fine, also read a CD okay. Then
restarted the Pismo in OS 9, and it worked there too. Once I get the
Lombard fixed I'll try it there too. A mystery.

You can't turn them off. The power management unit decides when it thinks
that the battery is charged to stop charging it and that's when the lights
go off. Maybe your battery is getting a little old or your power management
unit is confused...

Well, on my Pismo, that's what happen. If the battery has been fully
discharged, then you don't get all 4 lights but only one. When the battery
charges, then another light turns on until it's fully charged. It lets you
check the charging process without having to turn the computer on. Like I
said, that's what I've seen with removable batteries on Wallstreet and
Pismo.

WS, Lexmark, 9.1, freezes

2004-08-17 Thread Peter Webster
I have a wallstreet, w/sys. 9.1. I just bought a lexmark z605 printer

I just did a clean re-install, and reinstalled the Lex. software; it
printed once, then subsequently froze.

Any thoughts, suggestions, or voodo would be welcome.

Brian,
The version numbers are a bit confusing. My understanding is that the
drivers included in the OS support only the printing operations, not
scanning; and your number is probably up to date in this respect. To
have the full operation of the psc one needs to have the appropriate
driver from hp.
This appeared on their site as 6.3.6 (the last time I checked). When
I tried to scan with this driver I got an alert saying something like
memory sharing not yet implemented. If you want to try and see if
6.3.4 works for you, e-mail me privately and we can try to figure out
a way for you to get it (it is too big to e-mail, so I could probably

Re: PB (10.3.5) to VCR/TV display

2004-08-17 Thread Luis Sequeira
I have an S-Video to RCA adapter (which came with my Dell laptop). I
have a cable with 3-prongs (white/red/yellow) on each end. I plugged
the yellow into the VCR in RCA jack and plugged the other end into
the SVideo to RCA adapter and plugged that into my Powerbook.
I rebooted the Powerbook with this all plugged in and the VCR turned on.
I went to System Preferences Displays and clicked 'Detect Displays
 Nothing.
It seems to indicate a bad (or not compatible) adapter. Using the
S-video adapter that came with my Lombard, I had no problems, TiBook and
Lombard detect displays in a blitz. Trying a third part adapter yelded no
success.
Also note that adding an additional Scart/white-red-yellow to the chain
(when the VCR does not have RCA in -I mean the yellow one- and you use
the scart-in) disrupts the whole game, at least in my experience.
cheers, gianfranco

I think it all boils down to how the mac can sense that there is a
tv monitor attached to it.
The S-video port on the PB actually has more pins (I believe 7 vs
4) than a regular S-video plug.
The adapter that comes with the PB has these extra pins, one or more
of them actually carry the composite video signal. The adapter just
gives you a regular RCA jack to get the composite signal from. The
bottom line is that the PB can output BOTH an S-video signal AND a
composite video signal.
(So the adapter is NOT converting any S-video to composite).
I don't know the Dell, but it could be that the adapter you have may
actually be a CONVERTER (with the 4 S-video pins and some circuitry
that converts the signal to composite). If this is the case then
probably the mac can no longer sense what is a the other end of
this circuitry.

AFAIK there is no way to force the PB to output to the S-video port
even it senses nothing there, but if someone knows a way to do it, I
would like to know.

Re: advice re secondhand laptop configuration

2004-08-17 Thread Luis Sequeira
Well, if both printers are serial, then you would not be able to use them in
OS X, unless you get a USB to serial adapter like the Belkins' one. If you
do get that kind of adapter, then I would suggest a Pismo. Otherwise, a
Wallstreet might be better since it has serial ports but, remember, you
won't be able to run OS X and print. Furthermore, if you go with a
Wallstreet, the last officially supported version of OS X to run on it is
10.2, although the hack XPostFacto apparently lets you install 10.3 on a
Wallstreet and other officially unsupported Macintosh...
-Laurent.

Running 10.3.4 on my Wallstreet 233MHz (384MB of RAM) with the
generous help of XPostFacto.
It is completely stable and significantly faster than Jaguar. (Your
mileage may vary, of course)
That said, I think that the Pismo is probably the choice I'd make:
usb and firewire built-in, plus dvd support on OS X, and the fact
that it is a new world rom machine make this a better choice, in my
opinion. You can get usb, firewire and wi-fi (and I have) on the
wallstreet via cardbus cards; Airport can be had on the Pismo
internally. On the Wallstreet you can have at most two, or perhaps
one at a time, depending on the thickness of the cardbus cards.

Anyone know of any alternative drivers for wireless PC cards?
IOExperts'
seems to be slick and work well, but unless I find a reasonably priced
original Airport card, I'll likely be switching cards and really don't
feel
like shelling out an extra $20 for each card I choose to put in my
Powerbook. If it was $20 for unlimited external cards on their
supported
list, it would be a no-brainer, but I really don't like their $20 per
card
license.

Has anyone tried the free Sourceforge driver (for OS 10.2) with OS
10.3.x?
I've used the sourceforge driver with a WaveLAN gold card in my TiBook
500. It also works in a Pismo and a Lombard. I also tried the IOxperts,
but like you didn't want to shell out the extra money.

Re: WS, Lexmark, 9.1, freezes

2004-08-17 Thread Kris McGrath
I believe this is a USB only printer so I will through this one thought out.
A friend of mine had a WallStreet with a USB PC card and USB mouse. She
complained that it was freezing all of the time. When I looked at it, I
couldn't find a single problem, but I did notice that it only froze while on
battery. Further testing showed that it only froze when I tried to use a
USB device while running off battery. I never figured it out, but she was
able to work with it once she knew that it had to be on AC to use a USB
device.

I just did a clean re-install, and reinstalled the Lex. software; it
 printed once, then subsequently froze.

Any thoughts, suggestions, or voodo would be welcome.

 thanks!

Re: USB burner problem

2004-08-17 Thread Kris McGrath
Try this:

er.asp?docid=a5195acdc8ec48c4b457c4fef8b2e804_et505.xmlamsstatsid=88950

I remember having this problem with my old iBook and either a USB or FW
burner. The Authoring support for the Finder had to be disabled before a
third party app could use the burner.

Any ideas here: I'm trying to add a LaCie USB disc burner to my wife's
original clamshell iBook running OS9.2. It shows up in System Profiler, but
Toast 5 does not see it. I think I have turned off the right authoring
extensions. It works fine with my TiBook running the same system.

Just as a WAG, does she have processor cycling *on* when using
battery power? That will often cause freezes and hang-ups with USB PC
cards.

The other possibility is that the WS needs a powered USB hub because
the lack of built-in USB ports certainly creates a less-than-adequate
power environment. I don't know how much power a USB PC card actually
provides in contrast to the 100mA or so of the built-in ports. But I
wouldn't be surprised if it's even less under battery power. A
powered USB hub would solve that deficiency.

Bob
