Yes, sFTP runs through a secure shell (ssh).

Although I haven't had a need to try this personally, it's supposed
to be the way to do it:

FTPing to your Mac:
You have to open the Sharing panel in the OS X preferences and enable
Remote Access -- the setting that turns on SSH, because sFTP runs
over the SSH protocol. If you're going to be contacting your Mac from
outside
of a firewall or router, you'll have to make sure port 22 (not port
21, as FTP uses) can reach it.

Once this is set up, it should "just work."

FTPing from your Mac:
For secure ftp from the terminal:

ssh [EMAIL PROTECTED] (I believe Host IP address will work as well)
-- you'll be asked to verify the authentication certificate
-- type yes to accept the certificate
-- you'll be asked to provide your password

I think Asante always supports appletalk. I think D-link and
linksys support it sometimes.

As for linksys crapping out,--yeah after a couple of months,
ports 3 and 4 merged into one for no apparent reason. The speed was
never even close to comparable to the equivalent Asante. On the
other hand, my last Assant wireless router--although it had great
range, the WAN port went out so I had to turn off the router and use
it as a wireless switch.

I have to support what Laurent told you 100%. It's possible to get
around their lack of Mac support...if you are savvy enough to work
your way through any difficulties. But the Linksys products have a
terrible reputation quality wise -- especially their routers -- in my
local User's Group. I personally wouldn't buy one of their products.

If you want a good 3rd-party router from a good reputable company, I
recommend the Buffalo Base Station, which also bridges a wireless and
wired network. No special configuration necessary. I believe the
Buffalo BS still has a print server feature (if you happen to have a
supported printer). However, IIRC it does not support dial-up, which
is not important if you use broadband.

true processor speed (update)

2004-09-10 Thread WNK
I reset the PMU and turned the PB back on an it displayed the correct
speed: 7

After a regular restart it again shows the incorrect value.
I ran three passes with XBench (2 w/incorrect #showing & 1 w/correct
#showing) All three passes were with 1.75 points of each other.

Also, with regard to resetting the PMU. On the Apple support site they
seem to imply that this is something that one should periodically.

It says: "Over time, the settings in the Power Manager may become
unusable, which can result in operational anomalies with the computer.
Examples include
not turning on, not waking from sleep, not charging the battery, or not
seeing the AC Adapter, among others"

I also came across a couple of statements in other forums regarding the
sysctl hw.cpufrequency command:

1) hw.cpufrequency is no official parameter for sysctl. It is not
listed in the man page.

2) speeds began to be displayed incorrectly starting with 10.2.8
3) one person created a console app & obtained the value straight from
the underlying BSD API. It returned the correct cpu frequency everytime
no matter what the sysctl utility said. He also said that it would be
easy to check the Darwin source code to see where the sysctl utility is
going wrong.

So there you have it. As far as the XBench numbers are concerned, I
think it is fair to say that they show no real differences and that
XBench is a fairly rigorous benchmark. As far as the rest, I open to
ideas, comments, suggestions, etc.

If anyone runs through the same process that I did to check the speed
please be so kind and post your findings. Also, if anyone can verify #s
1 & 2 that would be great.

My general feeling is that the sysctl is returning the wrong number. I
have checked with two other friends (867 TiPB & 867 12 Al PB) In the
case of the TiBook he returned a
number of 667 (same as my 1g TiBook) and in the case of the 12 he
returned a value of 553.

Any and all commentary is appreciated. I personally would not mind a
definitive answer.

Wallstreet keeps shutting down

2004-09-10 Thread leif halvard silli
Hi -- I'm new to this list but a long time LowEndMac reader.
My Wallstreet "Road Apple" 12" has begun to suddenly shut down by
itself. I use MacOS9.2.2 and I first saw this while workin in InDesign
1.5. A reboot works fine, till it soon happens again. When it first
happened I was using an external monitor, though I don't know if that
had any bearing on this. However the failur seems to happen when the
'book is under som kind of strain. Sometimes the screen will flash and
flicker for a few secounds before it shuts down and other times it just
shuts down witout any warning.

It seems usually to happen when presing a shortcut which performs
something that is related to the harddisk. For instance when I save a
unsaved document, open a new document and similar things, though I am
not 100% that this is the real patter. Running Disk Firstaid does not
reveal anything wrong. I was also wondering if the actual pressing of
keys had any bearing, i.e. that the keyboard was defect somehow. In
fact, I am leaing towards that now. Sometimes pressing some keys while
holding down the Command key will cause restart also.

THe 'book doesn't have a battery installed, since it is broken- But the
CD-player and the discette station is inserted. I have tried to reset
the Power Management Unit (PMU) and zapped PRAM. I have used it without
battery for a long time without problems (though this is my number 2
computer at the moment, I don't use it often.)

I hope that anyone of you might have an idea what the cause might be. I
was just planning to sell it ... But now I wonder if I must use it as a
server -- if it only can survive _that_.

Did you install the latest security update? If so, there have been numerous
reports that this update switched the underlying ftp executable and for some
reason it is turned off. You might want to check MacNN.com, MacFixit.com
and XLR8YourMac.com for more details.

I've read on the Usenet that you could use sftp, but I don't know anything

Pismo FTP Woes

2004-09-10 Thread Mark Edward Attew
I have been having issues since Tuesday logging into my Pismo with 10.3.5.

When I use an ftp client from a PC or another Mac, I get the following:

Resolving host name 192.168.1.132...
Connecting to (192.168.1.132) -> IP: 192.168.1.132 PORT: 21
Connected to (192.168.1.132) -> Time = 31ms
Socket connected waiting for login sequence.
220 deadites.local FTP server (tnftpd 20040810) ready.
USER Mark Edward Attew
331 Password required for Mark Edw.
PASS (hidden)
530 User mattew may not use FTP.
Cannot login waiting to retry (30s)...

All I can think is that somehow my permissions got hosed as FTP is turned on
in sharing preferences. If I try to login with bad credentials the error
message is different:

220 deadites.local FTP server (tnftpd 20040810) ready.
USER Mark Edward Attew
331 Password required for Mark Edw.
PASS (hidden)
530 Login incorrect.
Any helpful hints?

It could well be a bug. So far, I haven't seen, I think, any PowerBook at

That sounds like a loose keyboard connector. Time to call AppleCare,
since in the Al series the kb isn't user-serviceable, iirc.
To check this assumption I carefully tapped the front two corners
vertically on my 'real' desktop. I chose the front as normally one
closes the PB by turning it on it's small back so tapping in the
opposite direction might 'reset' the connection.

Assumption confirmed, the keyboard works.
I have to inform Laurent that the PB 17" has no little switch to lift
the keyboard out. I have the service doc on my PB but the accessibility
is daunting so Ill check first with AppleCare as we have an Apple Store
in the neighborhood who might fix this at short notice.

Shall report on the outcome.
Many thanks and greetings, Andre.

Doubtful. Apple's always said that the interface they used for the 'b'

If you're planning to use any laser printer that relies on EtherTalk
(AppleTalk over Ethernet), I would suggest you look somewhere else as the
Linksys products don't support Macintosh at all. Plus, my experience has
been less than satisfactory with their products. I had 2 cable/DSL routers
that crapped out on me after a power outage. I switched to a D-Link router
and all has been well so far. Plus, D-Link seems to support Macintosh and
Mac OS X.

Just my $0.02...

On a pismo 500 running 10.3.4, I get exactly the same results as you,
except the date is 5/13/04, which could be a timezone matter (I'm in the
UK). So I don't *think* you need to worry.

Also the case here. I've wondered about that myself.

anyone know if the Linksys "SpeedBoost" feature would work with AirPort Extreme?

2004-09-10 Thread DavidStephenson

I just bought an iBook G4, and am finally going to get a wireless router. I wondered
if anyone's had any experience with the Linksys one
(http://www.linksys.com/products/product.asp?grid=33&scid=35&prid=610) with
"SpeedBooster"? First, I was wondering if it really is faster than plain vanilla
802.11g, and, if so, if it's at all incompatible with the AirPort Extreme card.
Thanks,
David Stephenson

Re: Trackpad on PB17

2004-09-10 Thread Claire Hart
When I type
something and want to move the cursor or click something, sometimes the
trackpad won't respond for a few seconds...
-Laurent.

Me, too. I got my PB17 two months ago. In continual use when my
finger stays on the track pad, it's fine. But when I take my finger
off the trackpad, even for a few seconds, sometimes it has this delay.
At some "sittings" it will work fine, while at other times it does this
continually. I haven't seen the common denominator yet.

I'm not sure about the "Valid" attribute, but I think that the dependency is
about other extensions that are needed for that one to work. This is off
memory, so I could certainly be wrong. I'm not sure that the extension would
be able to diagnose as to whether the drive is in working order or not. This
is purely speculation but I've never heard that specific extensions driving
hardware are able to diagnose if the hardware is running fine or not.

Is your LG drive working or not?

Pismo System Profiler Question

2004-09-10 Thread K
Greetings 'Listas,
I was just checking out some info in the System Profiler in 10.3.5 on
this Pismo and peeked in the Extensions folder under the Software
section. While scanning through the list I saw that under the item
IODVDStorageFamily Version 1.3.1 it shows something called Valid as NO
and Dependencies as INCOMPLETE. it also shows the IOCDStorageFamily
Valid as NO..but the Dependencies shows SATISFIED. The last Modified
date for both DVD/CD files shows as 5/12/04...Right about the time that
the DVD portion of the LG drive died The times show as 8:53pm for
the CD item and 8:54pm for the DVD item...
Does anyone have any idea what this stuff means and if it is critical to
the safe operation of the CD/DVD player? There are a few other items in
the list that show NO under VALID but YES under AUTHENTI and SATISFIED
under the DEPENDENCIES list.
I wonder if this is responsible for the DVD unit showing up twice in the
ATA Device Tree along with the Toshiba HD...
Thoughts and/or suggestions appreciated..
Regards,
Mike K

I got "hw.cpufrequency: 6" on my 1GHz 15" Aluminum PowerBook.

Just out of curiosity, did you run yours while on battery or plugged in? If
on battery, your processor speed is probably reduced (per the automatic
settings in the Energy Saver system preference). Perhaps it's reporting the
reduced speed.
