But a 4lb laptop is lighter still. Those who claim it makes no difference,
just haven't tried it yet.

The thing to keep in mind with the iBook is that the 12" and 14" LCDs have
the same resolution. The result is that the 14" model is easier on 'old'
eyes like mine. If I ever had to give up my 15" pBook I'd grab a 14" iBook
because of this.

You won't gain any screen real-estate by getting a 14" iBook, it has
the same 1024 x 768 resolution that the 12" iBooks have. unless your

Re: Quadrupled RAM shows no improvement

2004-12-31 Thread Geoff WALLACE
Hello All,

After a Firmware Update my G5 1.8 SP would only see 512 MB of RAM instead of
1.5 GB.

After removing the RAM and refitting I got it recognised again.

I could certainly notice the difference in machine performance when it
dropped back to 512 MB after 1.5 GB.

Remove the added RAM and see how the machine runs now, we very quickly
adjust to the added performance additional RAM gives and just accept that
its the speed the machine works at.

Before removing the added RAM, open the Activity Monitor and look at memory
usage while you have all your usual programs open, take a screenshot and
then compare with only running the base RAM, you will be surprised at the
difference.

Re: Less is more- a little story (Gather 'round!)

2004-12-31 Thread starfleet52
I have a happier tale that involves replacing a Powerbook

Lets go back to well early September 2004 I being a student in HS need a
laptop due to my bad handwriting. First laptop was a Thinkpad 755cd that
lasted from 9/03-9/04 I bought a Powerbook 5300ce that lasted me until its
flaws started to show their ugly heads. The keyboard cable broke in an
expedition to repair it so it was useless even if I replaced the damaged
power connectors. In October 2004 I bought off eBay a G3 kanga and I have
been happy with it ever since with 64MB ram and the 250MHZ G3 it outperforms
my old 117MHZ 5300. Just goes to show you a old 7.7LB Powerbook can still
make you happy even 7 years after it was built.

Hey all,

My bronze Gbook and I-- You couldn't separate us, and I just flat out
loved that machine. All it took was some terrible circumstances and a
shady motherfucker like my ex-roomate's boyfriend, and that was the end
of the romance. Several days later, I had to watch as lombard parts
went up on ebay from some undisclosed place in jersey, painfully aware,
but unable to prove, that they were probably the remnants of my
computer. (Nothing that was sold could be tracked back to mine, but I
knew the guy lived in jersey. My keyboard was partly broken, and the
only part not listed was --drum roll--- the keyboard. Bastard.)

So, friendly reminder from an ex-owner of the world's best laptop-
watch your stuff, don't even think for a SECOND to let it out of your
sight. It WILL walk.

Since then, I bought a 12" ibook. Yeah, it rocks and it was really
cheap (799), but I miss those sexy curves and jaw-dropping matte black
case. I took so much pride in having the last version of an apple
laptop with the upside-down illuminated apple-- just seeing the right
side up one on my ibook is a constant sore reminder.

Someday when I'm not a poor college kid, I'm going to buy one for
myself again. Its up to you guys to keep them in good shape, so when
you're ready to move on to a G5 'book, I'll be ready with a loving
home.

Take care,
-dylan

But the drive does not show up on my desktop...

IIRC I had to install some special JumpDrive drivers, and it was
inconsistent, sometimes it worked, sometimes it didn't. I ended up just
getting a regular USB card reader and using that. My two JumpDrive
flash cards work fine in those as well.

Also, make sure you have the various PC compatibility extensions
loaded, as it mounts as an MS-DOS volume.

I know that if I was working on huge files on high-powered software,

You really only see a dramatic improvement with added ram if you move
up from an inadequate amount. At 512 M your system had more than
adequate amount of RAM, so until you start doing things that are RAM
constrained, you will not notice the difference.

To make a very strained analogy, what you did was the equivalent of
installing auxiliary gas tanks in your truck (that you don't drive in
more than 100 miles in any direction) and are wondering when you're
going to see the improvements...you're not going to see anything until

You probably have no practical limit now on how many programs you can

Apple's airport base station supports up to 10 systems at 11 mbs,

to make the units speak to each other and pass data. I'd like to be able to
bridge using directional antennas over some significant distances.

As to getting the playstation hooked up, have you been able to pass data over
the playstation's connection using another computer? In short, are you sure
the connection you've rigged up to the playstation is even "hot" or not.

Hello all. I just returned two of them under this recall. It took about 10
days to receive them. As it was in conjunction with a CPSC agreement, I
don't think their will be any problem getting a new adaptor any time soon.

The recall covered the Model Number: M4402 adaptor, made by two different
vendors.

According to this page http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=16168

The adaptor was also sold as a compatable replacement for the PowerBook
1400, 3200 and G3. It is also used by the VST Chargers for these models of
computers.

I don't remember the service part number, but it comes in a padded mail
envelope with a new power cord. The adaptor does say Model Number M7332, on
it.

(If any one can find a article that crossreferences the M7332 with the
service number , I would appreciate it.)

The only problem I see is if you have more than two adaptors. The site says
they will replace any extra that you have purchased, and any that came with
a VST charger. But the site only lets you key in two serial numbers and
requires a serial number off a G3 Powerbook.

If you have the M4402 adaptor, by all means replace it under this recall.
While the replacement is not as small as the origional, its much safer.

Well, it's not that oldonly 2 years. And I tried removing the RAM without
success. I'm trying Carbon Copy Cloner now. It's in progress as I type this.

I really like my 12" iceBook 700. But in all honesty, if I could
trade it for an equal 14" version, I'd do it in a minute. I keep
finding myself wishing for a bit more screen real-estate like my old
Wallstreet had.

I am contemplating a *book purchase myself and find that I'm leaning
towards the 14" systems. I use 2-21" on the desktop and I'm not sure
I can do one 12" LOL

Re: Quadrupled RAM shows no improvement

2004-12-31 Thread Timothy Domst
There is a shareware program called Xbench, you can use it with both
RAM configurations and compare them.

On Dec 29, 2004, at 7:49 PM, Claire Hart wrote:
I have two questions, so I'll send them as separate posts.
My Powerbook is a 17" 1.5 GHz, July issue. I bought 2 GB of RAM last
month, replacing the factory-installed 512 stick. What improvements
should I see after having made this installation? I am not currently
running anything high-powered, although I hope to finally find some
time to make use of my Powerbook and have some fun. However, it seems
that I should see some improvements.

I did install and run OnyX recently, since I usually don't leave the
PB on overnight. That made a huge overall improvement, and seemed to
restore the PB to its original state. I know that if I was working on
huge files on high-powered software, with tons of photos, long movie
clips, graphics, rendering, etc., I might see a more noticeable
difference with the RAM upgrade.

What benchmarks are available to compare the performance of my
computer with this RAM upgrade?

Thanks,
Claire

12 inch Powerbook G4

2004-12-31 Thread Tim Collier
I just bought my wife a new iBook (14 inch). She was using a G4 Powerbook
867 12 inch model. We had upgraded the OS to 10.3.7--it originally came
with 10.2.x. I am planning on selling it and last night I went to put it
back to it's original state and inserted the original Install/Restore CD.
First of all, I tried booting from it and got a kernel panic on the screen
with the silver Apple. I rebooted from the Hard drive and tried to launch
the install program from the CDit restarted and I got the same kernel
panic about 5 seconds after the Apple shows up.
I did a little exploring on the Apple Support site and didn't find much.
Will I be unable to put Jaguar back on it? I'd really like to sell it with
the *original* software.
A thought, if I put in the Panther install CD and formatted the drive, would
it then accept 10.2?

Re: "Less is more" or "Bigger is better"

2004-12-31 Thread Zoltan Batiz
An interesting thread, so I thought I'd chime in. My Pismo is my main
computer. . .period. I use it at home docked on it's multiple fan
cooling station, elevated for my ergonomic needs, which of course is
connected to my Firewire and USB devices. Oh and on the subject of
screen real estate? At home my Pismo is always connected to my 17"
Apple Studio Display. . .PLENTY of real estate to do my work. For
those rare occasions when I have to go out to see clients, I grab my
laptop bag, which can neatly house my Pismo, flat bed scanner, CD/RW,
Zip Drive, and two extra batteries. The bag isn't even too big either.
. .but probably weighs as much as the average American, but hey I LOVE
to see my clients reactions as I bust out an entire office on the
table; of which everything mentioned is powered from my Pismo via the
Firewire and USB ports.

By the way folks, this brings me to the TWO REASONS I will have a very
hard time ever parting from my Pismo. Besides two batteries, the hot
swappable expansion bays are key elements for my needs, that always pop
up when least expected. So, if Apple somehow figures out how to make a
PowerBook G5 with those two main elements, I'll be the first in line.
And yea, it's gonna have to be a G5 to get me away from my Pismo.

Probably a third reason is due to the advent of wireless technologies.
Wireless, as we all know, has put an enormous jump on laptops in
general through sales and overall demand. Of course my two bedroom
condo is wireless and yes, I'm "technosexual" as was described the
other day on the news. . .I have the occasional "geek" parties with as
much as 12 to 14 people all wirelessly connected to my network via
their laptops, PB's and iBooks, surfing and downloading. I've got a
shared T1, so I might as well be generous with the bandwidth when I'm
not using it right?

Anyway, as a former desktop user who had a computer it seems that was
the size of my room with SCSI this and SCSI that just four short years
ago, the Pismo has made me a true believer in laptop technology and I
will never go back to a tower at home. NEVA! LOL.

Anyway, happy new year everyone. . .no more shots for me.
