Dim = Backlight bulb
White or stripes = Inverter or Inverter cable.

I don't know what you'll pay for this machine, but I'd be wary of iBooks
from this era and onwards, that are sold without Applecare left, unless
you like tinkering with the hardware, looking for second hand spare parts
or am prepared to pay a premium for later repairs and replacements.
If the price is low enough, this may not matter of course. I think the
1Ghz iBooks are quite nice machines otherwise and they probably fit your
usage profile if you can live with the smallish screen. You don't say
what your disability are, but I take it has nothing to do with your
eyesight or similar.

Dim display: inverter or backlight?

2005-01-02 Thread Matthew Surles
I posted this to the iBooks list last week and got no reply, so I
apologize to those who have seen this twice.

Is there anything diagnostic about an LCD's backlight behavior that
would indicate whether the inverter is going bad or the bulb is dying?
I'm too lazy to fix both...

I have a clamshell iBook with a dim display that I'd like to return to
it's former glory. It seems equally dim overall, with the exception
of the top part of the screen to the left of center, which seems
darker than the rest.

Thanks for any help,

Hey, it's XPostFacto that fixes those things (You can't install Panther

compatible on Wallstreets. I ran it for a long time before I upgraded to
a new machine. I dunno why anyone would need anything else

Re: iBook question again

2005-01-02 Thread Matt Halter
Aase,
My advice is to buy one with the faster processor. My G4 800 is a dog
compared to my wife's 1 gig mhz. The 30 gig HD is too small. You'll
run out of space fast especially if you have lots of music or photos.
Built in bluetooth is nice but I would trade it off to get a faster
processor and larger HD. Just my 2 cents.

Lombard is the second to last G3 model line.

Without looking at my batteries, here goes...
I think it was Mainstreet/Wallstreet(233, 250, 292), PDQ(233, 266,
300), Lombard(333,400), and lastly, Pismo(400, 500).

From your battery descriptions, I think you are looking for the
Wallstreet name (kind of encompasses Mainstreet/Wallstreet/PDQ).

Re: Ram in a Wallstreet

I have a wallstreet/300 running OS 9.2.2 and system
profiler does tells me the slots and sizes of the
installed ram. But then as others have already
mentioned your system profiler depends on which OS
you're running but all the OS's that run in a
wallstreet should give you both the slot position,
upper or lower, and size of each stick of ram

Unless you are running an old version of the OS then System Profiler
will tell you what each slot has. Look for a triangle next to the
memory listing and click on it. The triangle should turn down and
then more information will be shown.

Re: iBook question again

2005-01-02 Thread asiafish
At that price I would also say to go new. I don't know about European prices,
but our
current entry level iBook is a fast 1.2GHz that is more than 50% faster than
the
800MHz on account of the faster system bus and double the level 2 cache, making
it
faster than even the 1GHz PowerBook I bought last year. The warranty issue is
also
valid, though I can say I've had very good luck with used Apple computers,
especially
bought from people on the LEM Swap list (thanks Jared for the GORGEOUS Kanga
PowerBook).

iBook question again

2005-01-02 Thread Aase Marit Waage
Hi all,
I am looking around again, as I lost the other one. I got a bit
p*, as the seller had said it would go to the first, and I was
the first and had committed to buy, then he suddenly went on and sold
it to another, mailing me afterwards to tell me... That is not how I
do business... Oh well, maybe he wasn't the right one to buy from...

I am looking at some other ones now, and have also sent some mails to
some I know of that might have something, and mailed the Apple store
asking if they have a demo model or something like that. I mean,
getting a new one isn't that much more expensive than a used one,
they have more Mhz, but less RAM than most and less HD than many...
But, new is new... Warranty and all...

One I have been looking at, is more expensive than the other one, an
amount equivalent to what you pay for a used Airport Ex. Base here,
and it has that one included...

ibook g4 12" , 800 mhz, 256 MB ram, 60 GB HDD, OS X 10.3.7, 2x USB 2,
1X Firewire, wifi og bluetooth built in, Airport Express base, TV-out
cable, Original Apple bluetooth mouse (white)
Doesn't say how old it is...

I understand that I am not that used to many of the terms used
anymore (and some are new too), I have no clue what wifi means (has
to be something about wireless, I guess, but...). Can somebody
explain?

As far as I can see, the downside with it is the RAM, I was hoping
for a bit of luxury on that side, but hopefully it wouldn't cost too
much to buy some extra RAM, maybe eBay would be an idea? The HDD is
perfect for me (used to 6 GB It has 200 Mhz less speed though,
the question is how much of a difference that makes...

What do you guys think? Is this as interesting as the other iBook,
you think? I should really calculate a bit though, because it is not
that much less than a new one from the cheapest stores here, and then
I wouldn't have any costs on getting it here... But then again, a new
one would be with less RAM and HDD, but a faster processor... Maybe I
can live with only 30 GB, I do have a unused 80GB external one
sitting here, that the Pismo for some reason wouldn't communicate
with... Maybe I would have better luck with sys X...

Thanks a lot!
Aase :)

Which OS are you running? If it's Panther, you go to the apple
menu>about this Mac. When the little window opens telling you about
your Mac, you click on 'more info.' The system profile window comes up
and you would click on memory where it tells you what you have where.
I don't believe Jag did this, however.

naming of the second-to-last G3 PowerBooks?

2005-01-02 Thread dano
Question about the proper naming - or general naming convention - of
the G3 PowerBook generation that was next to last.

That is, not the final generation of 400MHz and 500MHz with batteries
that have a 3/8" protrusion for the contacts (battery model number
M7318), but the generation before that in which the batteries are
almost a clean rectangle and the contacts are embedded in a slight
1/8" protruberance (battery model number M4685).

Thanks for the help.

I have the dlink one for my G3 Bronze p-book. Works fine!! I got a

Search on froogle for a lower prize, 55 sounds too high. Both of these

better price and use the factory driver and utilities rather than having
to search out a contributed one on the internet. Save yourself the time.
That makes sense. Why fiddle with something when I don't have too.

Well, you may be correct, as the only manual I have is a .pdf and does
not say "pb g3 series." Probably for the earlier version. Will have to

Re: iBook vs. PB etc.

2005-01-02 Thread Aase Marit Waage
One more thing. This one has a Danish keyboard, which might be
slightly different from the Norwegian one. It has the exact same
characters, but a couple of them is placed differently. Can you
change such things? By defining the keyboard differently and maybe
switching around the key's?
I'd concur with the person who said that iBook should be enough for
your needs. The biggest issue for you (except for the price, of
course) would be the size of the screen and the whole unit... just
look around here or in the recent archives of the list, there's
still an ongoing discussion about this very topic (subject '"Less is
more" or "Bigger is better"'). But if you've known PowerBooks for
more than a decade, I'm sure you have it all figured out already.

There is also an issue with PowerBooks (metallic) looking different
than iBooks (white), which might be a factor for some people. I know
it was for me. :)

As for the keyboard, you can definitely switch the layout in Mac OS
X on the fly. I do it all the time between English and Polish
keyboards. Of course, that'll mean that some of the Danish key caps
won't be giving you the characters they promise :), but if you're
used to Norwegian keyboard scheme, or even touch type, it won't be a
problem.

I am not sure if you can define your own keyboard scheme in Mac OS X
(although I think there should be a possibility). There's a program
called Double Command that can let you switch the modifier keys
(Command, Control, Option, etc.) and some other stuff -- it was very
helpful for me to get the Polish accents the way I'm used to.

Good luck with your purchase!
 Marcin Wichary

Hello all,
Thanks so much for your help!!! I really appreciate it!!!
I just mailed the seller, and said I am willing to buy the iBook for
the price he asks. It seems like it is a good bet for me.

I touch type, real fast too, so I never look at the keys. So being
able to change things in Sys X, it should be more than OK for me. And
if I am really lucky, it will even be possible to loosen the keys
themselves, and switch them. But that is really not a necessity. I am
sure that I even would be able to get used to the different places
for the three characters in question (plus a few other things, I
think), but the problem is that I still have to live with using a PC
at work. I also have a Toshiba Portege laptop with XP pro which I use
for work, travel etc. I am only using that when I have to though,
because I really don't like it. It is just a necessity... I really
even prefer using my old PB over that one... I can't help it, I love
using my Mac, I only use the PC's because I have to, I don't like
it... :)

Now I am just crossing my fingers!!! I think I will be heading to
Denmark for a little trip this next weekend, it will be cheaper for
me to do that than have it shipped... The tickets to go there are
real cheap...

Here's one idea on how to be very specific about RAM versions. Go to
the Crucial.com web site. Enter you specific model iBook. Then match
up the specs given by Crucial with the details on your SODIMM. Other
web sites such as OWC (Other World Computing) and vendors advertising
at lowendmac.com the sponsor of this list can help also.

Re: iBook vs. PB etc.

2005-01-02 Thread Marcin Wichary
One more thing. This one has a Danish keyboard, which might be
slightly different from the Norwegian one. It has the exact same
characters, but a couple of them is placed differently. Can you change
such things? By defining the keyboard differently and maybe switching
around the key's?
I'd concur with the person who said that iBook should be enough for
your needs. The biggest issue for you (except for the price, of course)
would be the size of the screen and the whole unit... just look around
here or in the recent archives of the list, there's still an ongoing
discussion about this very topic (subject '"Less is more" or "Bigger is
better"'). But if you've known PowerBooks for more than a decade, I'm
sure you have it all figured out already.

There is also an issue with PowerBooks (metallic) looking different
than iBooks (white), which might be a factor for some people. I know it
was for me. :)

As for the keyboard, you can definitely switch the layout in Mac OS X
on the fly. I do it all the time between English and Polish keyboards.
Of course, that'll mean that some of the Danish key caps won't be
giving you the characters they promise :), but if you're used to
Norwegian keyboard scheme, or even touch type, it won't be a problem.

Hi all,

I have had different Power Books since my very first one back in 1992.
Right now I have a Pismo, one of the few ones with a bronze keyboard
and FireWire, it is a 400Mhz G3, running sys 9.2. It is getting on my
nerves now though, because it is too slow, I don't have enough memory,
have to re-boot often etc. I see that it is time to get a new one. I
can't afford buying a brand new one though...

I live in Norway, but have found some used iBooks and PB's in Denmark,
which is not that far, quite cheaply I can either travel there by
ferry to meet a seller or have a person I know get one for me. I have
found some options, some iBooks and some PB's. I am a bit in doubt
though, of which one to choose, and I don't have much time, or some
offers will be gone real soon, maybe even later today... I can't
figure out what is really the difference between a PB and and iBook,
maybe it doesn't matter for me which one I choose.

One I can get, at a price that seems real OK (at least compared to the
prices here in Norway) is a 12" iBook. The add says: G4, 1Ghz, new
April 04, 768 MB RAM, 60 GB HD, Airport Extreme, OSX 10.3.6 (incl.
Garageband and naturally all the others --> doesn't mean a thing to
me), DVD/CD-RW. AV-cable for use with projector, TV or similar.

My use is primarily home use. I have a disability, so a laptop I can
use in my recliner is my best bet. I use it a lot for writing, do a
little bit of web design (just on a hobby basis), lots of web surfing,
e-mail etc. I just want something that brings me up to OS X, that
won't make me re-boot all the time, that has enough memory for my use,
that is quick enough, and preferably with a CD-burner so I can
download and burn music CD's too.

I would really appreciate any real quick input on this. Do you think
this one is a good choice for my use? What is really the difference
between iBooks and PB's, does it really matter which one for my use?

One more thing. This one has a Danish keyboard, which might be
slightly different from the Norwegian one. It has the exact same
characters, but a couple of them is placed differently. Can you change
such things? By defining the keyboard differently and maybe switching
around the key's?

The price for this one is around $1,100 or something like that, but I
have seen prices for the same here in Norway that are a lot higher, so
it should be a good deal for me. Also with this one it would be
lighter for me, so it would be more easy to take with me when I
travel, something I don't do with the one I have now, it is too big
and heavy. The bad news is the smaller screen, but...

Thank you so much, I appreciate it a lot!!!
-Aase :)
It sounds like the iBook you mentioned will fit your needs.
Some of the differences between iBooks and Powerbooks are:
- powerbooks generally have higher screen resolution. (excluding the
12")
- powerbooks have a PC card slot. (excluding the 12")
- powerbooks have a higher ram capacity, faster video cards, bigger
caches, more and faster inputs and outputs, larger stock hard drives,
built in screen spanning, etc.

I have no clue as to wether you can or how you would go about changing
the keyboard.

My 17" PowerBook is 15.5" wide when nothing is plugged in to either

WS I and sleep

2005-01-02 Thread James Sanderson
Here is something I have discovered and would never have thought to do
so! I have, as I have mentioned, a WS I/ 233/288. I had a couple of
familiar problems with it: not waking from sleep and the random but
annoying video white out. I assumed that the issue was a PMU that
needed replacing and/or a bad inverter. However, I proceeded to
install Panther using XPF because I am both foolhardy and intrepid.
(In keeping with the season) Lo! the issue resolved itself! I have
had the machine on Panther for 36 hours, turning it off and on a couple
of times. I have put the computer to sleep and been able to awaken it
without a hitch. I would never have thought that the these two issues
would be resolved by using an OS that is not intended for the machine!
There is a God after all! Miracles DO happen!
Now if I could...

Have a Merry New Year and be happy in the remaining Christmastide and
beyond.

Re: "Less is more" or "Bigger is better" (off-topic)

2005-01-02 Thread Marcin Wichary
What I'm waiting for is wearables to happen with floating 20" images in
glasses.
We've all been there with the Virtual Reality Craze of last decade... I
still remember 16-page booklets containing just disclaimers of how
these kind of glasses can damage your eyes/make you vomit/turn you into
a serial killer, etc. Based on (commercial) state of the art I've seen
last year, I'm not sure if the technology is gonna be ready any time
soon.

I suppose key chords is the only way to go to make that work.
Not sure what you mean here, but it's very interesting for me (I'm an
interaction designer). I presume you could still use voice commands (as
ready for prime time as those goggles, I guess),
mice/trackballs/trackpads shouldn't be a problem, and even keyboards
for those gifted with touch typists skills?

Maybe wearables never will compete with portables, just open up new
avenues of usage. They really should be around the corner technically,
but there most likely will be yet some time for any siginificant market
demand.
Not sure about the "around the corner" bit, although who knows what
they're cooking in the research labs at this moment. But the whole idea
of Augmented Realities is indeed too good not to be expected with held
breath.

Most of the time you can always add more ram than Apple says is max.
Don't know what your chip is but it may or may not work, maybe if you
gave more info maybe someone here can advise you.

In any case I have a clamshell iBook (graphite 366) and Apple says the
max was 320mg. I put in a 512meg card and it works without problems
(over a year now) so can't see why it would be a problem in yours. In
my case I bought the ram in Calgary Alberta at Westworld and they
installed it and tested it.

Darn it, Ken, you made me go look for supporting references. :-)

I didn't have much time, so I didn't come up with the definitive
reference(s) that I wanted. But I have a dozen or more email messages
(from people that I have known over the years and respect their Mac
knowledge) indicating one of the advantages of the Wallstreet (I &
II) is the ability to hot-swap ADB devices. It *is* the one and only
PB with that capability.

As far as the manual is concerned, page 73 of the PowerBook G3 Series
"Macintosh PowerBook User's Manual" states:

"NOTE: You may experience a slight delay if you connect a mouse or
other ADB devices while the computer is turned on."

It wouldn't say any such thing -- especially without a warning -- if
the ADB port was not hot-swappable.

Please provide the page # for your reference. I still have a
gut-feeling that you're quoting from a different manual than the one
for the Wallstreet.
