AirPort card and ANY basestation ???
I have an iBook 800MHz 14 which came with an AirPort card. I bought the iBook as it was cheap and I was going to use it to create funds for a newer Mac, i.e. selling it on to someone who would pay just over the going rate as opposed to under the going rate which is where I bought it at... However, I find it quite nice compared to the 12 I had and I am considering keeping it, but I don't fancy paying for a genuine AirPort base station. Can I use ANY 802.11* base station ? The AirPort is 11Mb/s but I thought it would make sense to buy a faster base station in case I ever got a faster card in the future. This is rather drastic because it means moving documents from one account to another (changing ownership is a must!). It also means either transferring plug-ins and application support files too or reinstalling some software. But it sure beats reinstalling the OS - especially when you have the upgrade CD and not the full version. But that is a rant for another time. That will not solve the problem here, which is something in that user account is corrupted. Changing the name on the account does not actually change the account, because the important thing in Unix is not the username, but the UID, a unique number that identifies each user. That said, if changing users fixes a login problem, the problem HAS to reside in the users /Library directory. Apologies if this has already been suggested (I haven't read every word of this thread) but here's one way to troubleshoot a messed up account: Rename your old account's ~/Library folder to, say, oldLibrary (in this case I guess that will have to be done from the new account, either in Terminal using sudo, or with a third-party GUI tool) then log out and into the old account. The system creates a new Library folder, to which you can slowly and cautiously transfer your old preferences, application support files etc. It's not quite as tedious as it sounds, since in many cases the old files are redundant. Replacement pismo battery
Hi all, My Pismo's battery life is now zero, so I'm in the market. Although I'm in the UK, the most promising deals I've found so far are the high- capacity (6600mAh and 7200mAh) NewerTech batteries sold by OWC in the US. Even after shipping and tax these work out slighly cheaper than a standard 5400mAh battery bought here. (Don't ask me why :) Any comments, or alternative suggestions? thanks, TimH -- G-Books is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... In the Finder, from your 2nd account, go in /Users/your initial user ID. Then, select Get Info from the File menu in the Finder. Open the Ownership Permissions tab in the Info window. Usually, you shouldn't have access to that folder, but since your permissions were screwed up, I don't know how they would be showing. In any case, click the Details tab to open it. You should now be able to see who is the owner. This is a popup menu and could be disabled. If it is disabled, there should be a little padlock next to it. If you click on it, it will prompt you for your administrator password. Basically, you enter the password of the 2nd account you just created. After validating your password, the Owner popup should be enabled. If you open it, you should be able to see your initial user ID and should select it. After that, make sure that the Access popup says Read Write. Then, click the Apply to enclosed items... button at the bottom of the info window. A confirmation message will be displayed. Click OK. Then, if you haven't enabled Fast user switching, I would suggest you do so because it will be easier and faster to check if the permission change had any effect on your other account. So, if Fast user switching is not turned on, go in the Accounts preference pane and turn it on. Then, you should see a new menu on the right of the screen with your current user name displayed there. If you click on it, you should be able to login in your original account without login out from your temporary account. Try to login and report back what is now happening. Hi, I did what you said, but you mention fast user switching in accounts pane. Is this in system preferences? I don't see fast user switching. Where exactly is it? If it matters, I'm using Jaguar 10.2.8. Ooops! I did assume you were on Panther, no fast user switching in Jaguar. Ok, so, did you try to log out from your new account and try to login into your old account? Any change? Hi There are no changes, and now my password will not unlock my screensaver. Can't even empty my trash. I'm really baffled by this. I've been using my computer for three years without the slightest issues. What is my next step? Upgraded PowerBook G3 Pismo as OS X Server?
Hi Folks, I have a heavily upgraded PowerBook G3 Pismo and was hoping to use this as a server once I buy myself a new Mac mini :) The Pismo has a PowerLogix BlueChip G3 900MHz, 1Gb RAM and an AirPort Extreme card, the hard disk is the original 30Gb one. I was going to install MacOS X 10.3 Server on it. My question is related to heat... I used to use my laptop on a desk and the internal fan never came on even during the most processor intensive operations. Recently I have started using it on the sofa and on my bed, when its on the bed or sofa the fan does occasinally come on. When using it as a server, I was hoping to run it with the screen closed. Can anyone tell me if its possible to tell the Pismo laptop not to go to sleep when you close the screen in OS X? Does anyone know if there is going to be a heat problem running the upgraded hardware with the screen closed? Has anyone got any tips or tricks for me?! -- Thanks, Andrew McCall [EMAIL PROTECTED] -- G-Books is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... Hi, After spending most of the very early morning hours playing with accounts and privileges, It seems that my finder is back home. I followed what Laurent and a few others advised, and things seem to be going well so far. I documented everything I did, but I'm not sure what exactly did the trick. My Jaguar and Classic hard drive icons appear on my desktop, but there are two other folders that were on my desktop that have not appeared yet. Thankfully most of my important files were backed up, but I think backing up will be done religiously and more often :-) Should I eliminate my new account that was created during this issue, or should I just leave it ? Trouble with Quicktime viewing
Yesterday I tried to watch the MacWorld keynote address on my 1.5 GHz PowerBook with 2 GB RAM. It seems that I have the hardware for it anyway. We have DSL. It interrupted and quit so many times in the first 20 minutes that I watched it on my son's 2-year old PC instead (with XP Professional), where it had to rebuffer (I think I spelled that right) only twice, and then started right back up. His computer was using Quicktime as well. In trying to console me, my son suggested that I had probably tried to watch the keynote when a million other people were also trying to log on. This type of trouble occasionally happens to me, and my son's computer seems to not have this trouble. I do not have Quicktime Pro, although I'm asked if I want to upgrade each time it opens. Is that my problem? Any suggestions? Any buttons I need to click? Thanks, Claire -- G-Books is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... Re: Upgraded PowerBook G3 Pismo as OS X Server?
To accomplish Pismo function with lid closed: 1: attach USB mouse 2: close lid - Pismo sleeps 3: click/move USB mouse 4: Pismo wakes then runs without lid open (watch your energy settings for AC power) Things to consider: 1: you should dim the display entirely in case backlighting turns on 2: provide good airflow underneath i.e. got rubber feet? 3: [consider this step 1.5] may need a Monitor -- VGA port or TV -- s-video initially for the Pismo's LCD display to disable when closed - then unplug the extra monitor if it isn't needed I did that with my pismo but I don't have it anymore so I am going by memory. I ran DVD playback from the closed pismo (g3/500) to a TV or external monitor. It would get hot, almost too hot, from so much optical drive usage and decoding/playback. The heat issues you are worried about would be mitigated by: 1: removing optical drive 2: removing battery 3: good airflow around the pismo good luck! - stein -- G-Books is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... Powerbook G4 400 faster than 550?
I thought the 16 MB VRAM in the ATY,RageM6 would offset the smaller amount of L2 cache and inferior CPU architecture in the other generation of the G4 processor that the 550 and onwards have. But the PB 550 feels noticably slower. So, is the next logical change a 867 or faster? I do have an addional 256MB in the 400, but I have more than a hundred MB free so it doesn't seem related. Re: PB G4/400 freezes suddenly. Heat? - Update (not heat or fan)
Here's an update: We temperature measured my freezing PB G4 / 400 running with an alternative HD. We used an external multimeasurement device with a cable attached to the heatdissipator. The temp reached 66°C before the fan went on ( I had to use 2 movies running in VLC and QT player as well as coding a 20minute piece to AAC in iTunes keep the temp rising for about 90 minutes). The temp dropped to 52°C and the fan stopped. So there went my fan-not-running-mustbe-heatproblem theory. OK. So I took my old HD, that have been working error free in a PB G4 550 for the last week, and put it in my -book and booted. The move took about 15 minutes and the machine naturally cooled off. It frooze at the login screen! Further proof that this freeze problem is unrelated to heat, right? I did a hard restart and could login and 5 minutes later it frooze again. At this point I decided I could deduce that excessive heat wasn't casuing the problem and further the fan is actually working. I then put my HD over in the 550 again and here it works without freezing. Again. So I'm going to run my machine with the other HD and if the freezing stops, then there must be something fishy about my drive (30 GB IBM Travelstar). But if so, why does it work in the 550? I'm using my HD in that machine now. Something to do with differences of internal power tolerances? I'm not sure at all, but all of the above is repeatable. There are no logical errors on the disc that I can detect with software, and it seems unlogical that logical errors on the disc would cause problems on one machine and not on another? Or am I wrong? Any further suggestions and even wild speculation are more than welcome at this point. What data can I measure with my disc? It has SMART. Can that help me? Mikael Byström said: Noone have any insights on this type of problem with a Powerbook G4 suddenly start to freeze after using a firewire disc? (See both earlier posts further down for details) If not, anyone care to say anything on strategy for measurement of temperature and other useful data? I've fixed simpler problems with the PB G4, more complicated problems in the wallstreets and Pismos, but this kind of freeze problem in a PB G4 is new to me. Mikael Byström said: It just got Worse! Three times since this drive encounter my whole machine have frozen 4+ times. It just freeze and there is nothing you can do except the three finger salute. There is no log of anything in the OS, indicating hardware failure. I did a Open Firmware set defaults, reset nvram reset all. This didn't improve anything. Then I popped up the keyboard and discovered that the connection cable from the PCMCIA slot had been disconnected from the motherboard. I reinserted it hoping this would solve matters. I think it froze four times since, one of them booting into single mode and stopped just after the first 20 lines. All of this because I pop in a firewire drive during sleep? Or did it just cause already broken things to surface? The new thing with the drive was that it was the first firewire unit I have used that needed bus power. Maybe this put some toll on the motherboard or something? Hmm, one thing I seem to notice is that my fan isn't running as far as I can tell. Maybe it stopped? How do one force start the fan? Will the Apple hardware test CD, that came with the machine, test the fan? If it doesn't, then maybe this is a heat problem? Any ideas on how to verify the fan operation or other ideas to solve this problem? I tried Temperature Monitor, but unfortunately only the HD SMART controller is supported on my Powerbook G4 400 and I noticed that when crashes occur the temp is 43° C/109.2°F after rebooting. The first troublefree time it's at 39°C to 42°C. Mikael Byström said earlier: Anyone know what this can be about? I sleep my TiBook 4oo with powercord in, insert a cordpowered firewiredrive and the machine refuses to wake up. It's not off, but HD seems to not spin up, just kinda sims about and display is dark. Three finger salute with drive disconnected, machine boots up and just before logging in I sleep it again, inserts the drive, it wakes up and I login and copy my files, eject the drive, sleeps it again, remove the drive and now the machine plays dead again. Another forced restart and everything is normal. Now, what conclusions are the to make here? I couldn't find much in the system log. -- G-Books is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... Re: Trouble with Quicktime viewing
The free version of QuickTime will nag you with this dialog very often (I believe every first time it's launched after the computer is turned on), it's normal and has nothing to do with further performance (the tip to get rid of that window: move the clock forward in time a couple of years, run QuickTime, quit, rewind the clock back). Two possibilities I see here (perhaps they are more): - QuickTime on your PowerBook is configured differently; there are options for bandwidth, etc. You might want to compare configuration of both computers side by side (launch Preferences on both of them). - PowerBook has some problems with the network; do other applications have similar issues? you mention that you occasionally have these kind of problems... you mean with QuickTime or something more general? how are both computers connected to the Internet right now? First, if you haven't, I would recommend resetting the PRAM (hold command-option-P-R for at least 3 'bongs.') Then try resetting the defaults in open firmware. Hold Command-Option-O-F at boot. Type reset-nvram and press return. Type reset-all and press return. If that doesn't work it sounds like the OS is corrupted or the hard drive is bad. This type of trouble occasionally happens to me, and my son's computer seems to not have this trouble. I do not have Quicktime Pro, although I'm asked if I want to upgrade each time it opens. Is that my problem? Any suggestions? Any buttons I need to click? Thanks, Claire -- Exterminate all rational thought. -- G-Books is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... Re: Dead Pismo
I wish I could start from the CD but I can not get power up to boot, even though I have a good battery inserted and also the AC adapter on. CA -Original Message- From: G-Books [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of Charlie Richards Sent: Thursday, January 13, 2005 14:34 To: G-Books Subject: Dead Pismo My Pismo wont boot up, system is powered with AC adapater as well as having the M7318 battery inserted and charging (?) I have replaced the PRAM battery, still no luck. I tried my other M7318 battery hit the startup button, got the startup tone and a apple showed up on the screen, but no turning pancake. After a while got a message to hold down the start up button for several seconds. This did shut it down, but I cannot boot up. Any suggestion? If I understand correctly the system powers on but doesn't boot into the operating system. I would recommend starting up from your OS CD or a drive utility and checking the disk. -- G-Books is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... Re: Dead Pismo
I just thought of something else no lights come on the battery when inserted. Do you think the problem can be with the power unit(?). Charlie No, can you advise how to, and thanks for the quick response. Re: Finder is somewhat back
Once upon a time (Thu Jan 13), sacredsystem wrote: Thus spoke Laurent Daudelin [EMAIL PROTECTED]1/13/05 Have you tried to rename the Library folder in your regular account, logoff and then log back in? What happens then? Rename? How? Get info from the file? If that is the way, when I do my finder blinks and disappears for a second. Despite the GUI (and some other funkiness), MacOSX is Unix underneath, and sometimes these problems are easier to fix when you think in Unix rather than Mac. So, if you have a second account with administrative privileges, log into it. If you don't, create one and log into it. Get a Terminal up (Applications/Utilities/Terminal). Say your username is fubar: substitute fubar with your real user name. At the prompt type each of these lines separately, pressing Return at the end: sudo su - fubar mv -i Library oldLibrary exit exit The -i option to mv is to make sure it will ask you before doing anything destructively. Next, log out of the administrative account, and log back into yours. The system will recreate a nice fresh Library directory for you. If that fixes your problem, then you can move things from your oldLibrary directory into the freshly created Library directory as needed. Or, just live with the new one. If it does not fix the problem, and you want to go back to the way things were, log out and log in as that other user again, and type in the Terminal: sudo su - fubar mv -i Library freshLibrary mv -i oldLibrary Library exit exit You can delete the freshLibrary directory later if you wish. What do i do next? I generally do one of two things. Usually when something goes awry it is a munged preference file. The trick is to figure out which one...or you can use the shotgun approach. Given that the Finder is failing to launch, I'd remove the com.apple.finder.plist file - which of course means you'll need to have root privileges since you won't be able to do this when you are logged into your usual account. The shotgun approach would be to replace a large number of preference files at once - perhaps all the com.apple.* files. But I'd try the finder.plist first. There's a much easier way to detect and correct corrupted .plist files. A nifty little free utility called Preferential Treatment will do those things for you. Did I mention that it is free? :- Preferential Treatment will parse invisible files (i.e., files whose name begins with a dot) as long as their names end in .plist and they are in a directory that PT is set to search. If an invisible file is found to be corrupt, using PT to move it to the trash will also work to remove it.
