I don't know what current PBs can take but this new iBook has 1.25Gb in it.

You might consider an HP. Their print cartridge combines the ink

head from clogging, cleaning it, no matter how clogged is as simple

Thanks, I'll check it out as I think I set it to let Windows drive the
connection. I think I did install maybe the driver for the card, but that
was it.

OTOH, I had to move her PC today and after reconnecting everything, I logged
in and didn't get the error tooltip that the connection was lost. I asked my
wife to try again and she'll let me know how it goes. The funny part is
that, before, when having the problem, her PC was basically sitting just
above the base stationm, up on floor, and now, it's at the end of the house.
Go figure...

Lombard Chimes & Dies

2005-01-15 Thread Lawrence & Sarah Ballew
Listers,
I have a PowerBook G3 (Lombard) 400
512 MB ram
OS X 10.2.6
USB Apple mouse
40 GB hard drive with two partitions - one for OS X and the other for
OS 9

This baby has been running great for over a year. Last night I
finished up with things, put my PowerBook to sleep (I rarely shut-down)
just as usual. This morning when I went to wake it up, nothing! The
power indicator light had been flashing as normal in sleep mode. I hit
the shift key and everything went dead. I left it for a few seconds and
then pushed the power button. Nothing. I know that there have been
times in the past where things could freeze up while in sleep, although
I haven't experienced that for a long time. So, I pushed the Command +
Control and Power button. The machine gave me the start-up chime but
that is all. It didn't start up. The back-light on the screen flickered
ever so slightly but still nothing. Breathe Breathe, Breathe...

OK, removed the keyboard and checked the ram, made sure that everything
is seated well. Made sure that the battery had juice - it does - and
plugged the power cord back in. Try again. Hold the power button down -
Nothing. Command + Control + Power button gives me the startup chime
but no start up.

Try the reset button on the back panel. Press in and release. Power
indicator light gives me a blink but nothing else happens. Press the
Power button and all I get is the startup chime but no start up. Try
pushing the power button again, nothing. Have to push the Command +
Control + Power button to even get the chime.

Any ideas?
Thanks in advance because you guys are great.
Lawrence

iBook or PowerBook

2005-01-15 Thread ShaunOtter

Key question: Is your 17" TFT's (or any other monitor
you may eventually want on your iBook) native screen
resolution higher than your proposed iBook's? You
can't drive an external monitor of any sort at a
higher resolution than what the iBook is capable of
displaying on its own screen, and it can only be a
mirror of your Ibook's screen, if I remember
correctly.

A 12/15/17" Al PowerBook, however, should be able to
drive external monitors at much higher res than what
it displays (and use it as a second monitor OR
mirrored). I got a 15" Al PowerBook over a 14" iBook
G4 for that reason ... it'll be sweet when I get a
19-23" LCD screen.

For me this would be the big one. Since you are going for the external

the mini-VGA? I do not know, but have the very vague impression that
the VGA entails some conversion of signal involving digital to analog
which degrades what your eyeball gets. Also, does the interface
dictate what models of monitor are available to you?

Do you need or even want this?

You're not going to like this; none of the options are very appealing.
1) Print something every day or so, anyway. If you do this, most
inkjets last a longer time with fewer problems. You burn lot of ink and
paper this way, unfortunately.

1a) Get an inkjet with the print heads built into the cartridges. You
burn a lot of ink, but at least the rest of the printer continues
working. You can extend this by taking out the print carts after use
and storing them in humidified airtight containers. This is a hassle,
though. Most printers make you go through re-calibration every time you
put in a cartridge.

2) Get a color laser printer. Muchos bucks...the cheapest is several
hundred dollars, and toner costs aren't cheap, but on a per-page cost
they're cheaper in the long run than inkjets. They also don't print on
as many different kinds of stock as inkjets do. like glossy and t-shirt
transfers. They're also not as high-resolution as inkjets.

This is why I've given up...my home printer is an old HP laserjet 4, it
sits there off most of the time, but about 20 seconds after starting up
it'll print a good page every time. B&W only, of course...

3) Invent a stasis field printer cover. If you do, I'll be at the head
of the line for one...

I have just bought a fairly cheap iBook Ice 500MHz.
The guy says the PSU blew (?) and took the iBook's
power input with it, that is
- it works on battery
- does not charge
- does not work off mains
He bought a new charger which he tried, no differance.
Questions:
1. Could this be simple to fix ? How ?
Nothing on the white iBooks is easy to fix. There were a few comments
here recently about how many screws people had left over after going
inside, and it's usually one or two of the 50 or so to remove.

Re: To iBook or AlBook, that is the question

2005-01-15 Thread Ben Dyer
I'd recommend the PB 12" -- the screens are generally better, the GPU
is better, and they're more expandable. The GPU may not seem like it's
too important, but under Tiger, none of the iBooks (nor the Mac mini,
for that matter) will support CoreImage. This means you can't use
Motion, and you won't be able to use the efficiency improvements that
Tiger implements.

The DVI out is another big thing -- if you want to upgrade the LCD (or
if the current one has a DVI connecter), it's much better to go
DVI->DVI (or even DVI->VGA) than VGA->DVI.

Also, PowerBooks can ("officially") take more RAM (up to 1.25GB, I
believe, compared with 640MB for the iBooks). Newer, high-capacity
SODIMMs make this less of an issue, but it's still good to have over
1GB of RAM wherever possible.

An extra 10GB hard drive space is not huge either way, but you'll
probably hit the limits of the 30GB drive reasonably soon, so at least
the 40GB gives you more time to upgrade.

Finally, the PB is just a much more attractive computer. The iBooks
scratch and stain quite easily, whereas the PB maintains its pretty
aluminium sheen through almost any punishment.

Cheers,
Ben

Re: Apple Refusal to repair IBook LCD Bright spots

2005-01-15 Thread simont
Thanks for the kind words -- I am hoping that some folks here might be
able to share their experiences to help build a case. I know generally
Apple has very good support, but I do not believe that this scenario is
such an example. To be completely honest, I am also quite shocked at the
$750 that they tried to stick me with, which shows to me that there's no
attempt to even help me out or reconcile the possibility of a defect --
makes me think that the AppleCare package was not worth while. Had they
at least offered "discounted" repair, it would have at least made me feel
slightly "more taken care of." In any case, I have found several cases of
the same problems occuring on the same unit on the Apple discussion
boards, with similar outcomes of Apple simply denying the repair as being
legit. I encourage any one of you to chime in if you have had any related
experiences.

Re: Wireless router woes

2005-01-15 Thread Kathryn Odell

While the wired computers are always able to be online, the wireless
connection sometimes doesn't work. The fix was to disconnect the
router's power for a moment, then plug it back in, and the two
wireless computers would have the signal restored
Yeah, mine does that too. I have an Airport Extreme base unit waiting
for me to get round to slotting it into place instead of the netgear
router.

I've had a Netgear router for 3 years now. It's worked well for me,
both with my Pismo and my new 15" AlBook. I rarely wireless problems,
but when I do, a computer restart usually solves it.

Replace the power supply card first, (which is the card below the

then to replace the sound card which is where the AC cord plugs

When I did this with my lombard the PS card didn't seem to help and

Intermittent wireless signal

2005-01-15 Thread Laurent Daudelin
I have an AirPort Snow base station that works fine with my PowerBook and my
children iBooks pretty much anywhere in the house. Recently, I had to move
my wife's PC and didn't have anymore an Ethernet connection. So, I bought
her a PCI 802.11g wireless card. At first, it seems it was working fine. But
now she complains that the signal is cycling, e.g. the signal is fine then,
all of a sudden, the computer reports that the signal is lost. Then, it
comes back again for a few minutes before being lost again, and it goes on
and on. I have my older Pismo just next to her PC and the Pismo gets a
constant connection.

Anybody knows what could be wrong? It's driving her crazy and she's driving

I've never opened an iBook but I've heard many times that only replacing the
hard drive is a tough job, so I would imagine that it is not simple and
definitely not for the faint of heart, but, if you take your time and have
clear instructions, you can probably do it. I would think that, based on the
symptoms you describe, it's probably the AC board. On PowerBook G3 Series,
the AC board was with the sound board, so it was called the AC/Sound board,
but I have no idea if an iBook has a separate board or if it is on the main
logic board...

hot-swappable.
I'm not sure it'll display properly (haven't done it in a while), but
you can plug it in and out while the computer is on without causing
damage.
Hey Bruce,
As I recall the WS manual states that the television should be shut
off when connecting an S-video cable, and that the PB should be put
to sleep.
Two questions:
1. Is there any type of voltage on a S-video line?
Well, yes, it's an electronic signal line, so of course there's
voltage. Enough to hurt things, probably not. This is a signal
recognition issue.

2. Does putting a PB to sleep (a WS in this case) have any effect on
the ports?
(I've always assumed that the reason Apple recommends putting the PB
to sleep for some connections is that the when a PB wakes up, the OS
scans the ports each time, thus would recognize a new connection that
was done during sleep. I don't know if that is correct or not.)
Your assumption is correct; actually all of Apple's instructions are
geared towards that end.

Many TVs won't switch inputs while 'awake', except via the menu off the
remote controller, and the WS won't recognize a port being connected
unless it's seen as live when the computer either boots or wakes up.

Doing it per Apple's instructions guarantees the best chance for
instant success, so some smarta** in the back of the room doesn't yell
"Get a Mac!" while you're struggling with your display.

Re: Dead Pismo

2005-01-15 Thread James Sanderson
The other thing to consider would be the PMU. I'm thinking about all
the components that have to do with power management. The PMU and/or
the Sound Card are the most likely culprits of your problem. I'm not
so sure that the logic board would be at fault. That's not to say that
it couldn't be but...
As for the PMU, it is separate from the mb. Follow this link to see a
picture of it:
http://www.powerbookmedic.com/Power___Charger_PMU_Battery_Board_Pismo-
p-16137.html
It is on slide 22 at the 'take apart' link I sent you yesterday.

There is this from xlr8yourmac.com about the PMU reset:
...Most often it is due to a dead cell in the backup battery, or just a
corrupted PMU. The problem is that you can't reset the PMU correctly
from a dead backup battery. You can zap the PMU, which will get the
backup battery charging again. Then reset it in a few hours when the
battery has some charge. The steps are below.
If this doesn't correct it, then they most likely have a bad (not just
dead, but bad cell) battery that is corrupting the PMU on its own. The
first suggested fix is an accurate set of PMU resets as follows.

 RESETTING THE PMU
A corrupted PMU (Power Management Unit) board can cause many
sleep/startup issues.
The PMU is the Power Management Unity of the system. When the
batteries are completely drained, draining too fast, or a battery with
a bad cell exists, or if the AC adapter is unplugged from the wall, but
left connected to the PowerBook, the PMU can become corrupted
If the internal motherboard backup battery has become completely
drained, then a 2nd PMU reset will be needed about 4 hours after the
1st PMU reset and the system has been plugged in for at least an hour
(once the motherboard battery has enough power to reset the PMU
properly). The first reset (due to a dead MB battery) wipes the PMU.
The second reset (using the charged MB battery) rewrites the PMU with
long-term firmware.
Before resetting the PMU, check all connections. If possible. Put the
system to sleep and insert a known good battery, then test.
 Reset the PMU as follows:
Unplug the AC from the PowerBook.
 Eject the battery(s).
Depress the PowerBook reset switch ONE TIME (in the back by the modem,
marked by a white triangle).
 Wait 10 seconds.
 Replug the AC.
 Reinsert the Battery.
 Restart the system.
After the system has had about 4 hours of "plugged in" time, repeat
the PMU reset as outlined above. This will rewrite the correct PMU code
using the trickle from the motherboard battery's charge to do the
writing.
If the system still does not charge/drain/startup correctly. You can
try a hard motherboard reset. Follow the same instructions above, but
after #2, lift the keyboard and unplug the motherboard battery (lower
right above CD bay, three wire connector), wait 10 minutes then
proceed. After running for an hour on AC, do a normal PMU reset.
 Best regards,
 Gary Dailey

Linksys wireless router, favorable data point

I've had good luck with linksys, specifically a BEFW41 (?) wireless 4
port 802.11b model. I've been using it for at least 3 years with a
Wallstreet and a Lombard as well as a couple of PC notebooks.
I think there may be a problem with passing appletalk packets but I've
never had more than one Mac connected at once so I've never had to deal
with it.
I do like the browser based setup utility, I can get into the router
from any computer with any operating system using any browser.

but the motherboard was replaced (receipt).

= VRAM, ports
=

+ DVI out (mini-VGA for the iBook)
+ Audio in on the PB (none on the iBook)
- I can wait to buy an iBook that'll come with Tiger
+ I can repaint the PowerBook.
??? Video ATI Mobility Radeon 9200 (iBook) vs.

The serial port *is* hot-swappable. Some drivers don't recognize when
an item has been added/removed because that's not part of the spec, but
I've never had a problem with this. (This information is from a quiz
Tidbits had a few years ago about what ports are hot-swappable - ah,
here it is: .)

You can always use an Asante or Farallon Ethernet/LocalTalk adapter
and an ethernet hub to network the printer without physical switching.
 Check out:

Does your Epson 740 not have Serial, USB, and Paralle ports, like my
Epson Color Stylus 900, so that you can have dual direct connections
to your Wallstreet and iMac anyway?

I can't offer any solutions for you; I can only offer support and
encouragement. Encouragement for you to pursue your case aggressively with
Apple for, if the events are as you portray them, you clearly have a case.

Become a thorn in their side and just keep after them, relentlessly.

Good luck and keep us all in the loop as to how the case progresses.

I think each region has its own refrain. At the college computer club it is,
"You should never have bought a Linksuck! Get Netgear or Buffalo." I suspect
whichever router is most popular in a particular area that's the one that
gets dissed. I also suspect that all consumer wireless stations are
marginally specced and marginally crafted to be as cheap as possible.
Remember, two years ago the going price was about $150 and now it is $40 at
WalMart. (And that's a rant for another day.)

Suggestions? If it is still under warranty start making noises at customer
service for a replacement. When a unit has been working and then suddenly
stops (and no configuration changes preceded the failure) a firmware update
isn't likely to fix it. The most likely fix is a powerdown or resetting to
defaults. You've tried the first, have you tried the second? If so,
beginning demanding warranty replacement.

If the unit is out of warranty then it is time to buy a new one. I'd been
buying Airports for personal use mostly for the convenience factor but next
time around I'll buy a Buffalo unit unless Apple's has dropped below $100.
Why Buffalo? I bought several Buffalo printer servers this summer and had a
couple problems. Tech and customer service were beyond good.

Re: Dead Pismo

2005-01-15 Thread CHARLES RICHARDS
Thanks again James, I have placed an order for the logic board, so when
it comes in I will look over the connections carefully.
I do have an additional question for you. Is the power management of
the pismo on a PC card to itself? I may need to change it out if so
first.

Chrlie
If you are dead in the water, so to speak, it would seem a power issue
(duh). So, you may want to check the sound card as it is where the
power adaptor connects to the computer. A take apart slide show can
be found here: http://homepage.mac.com/sysop/PhotoAlbum7.html
It seems that this is a place to start since the Pismo booted, then
panicked, and failed to restart. Moreover, you're not getting
anything anywhere, not even a hint that the power is connected,
battery or A/C. Perhaps while you're in the innards you should check
the connexions, making sure they are secure.

I am suprised that there haven't been more suggestions.

Wireless Boosting?

Sorry about your troubles with the Netgear router, Claire. Without
trying to "rub it in", I'm afraid I agree with Kyle. Not everyone
experiences problems when they use a router from a company that is
not really Apple oriented. But it seems to be too frequent.

Let me be the first to warn you away from LinkSys. A number of local
user's in my area have had their (LinkSys) router fail on them after
a year or so.

If Apple's ABS options (even used ones) are out of your price range,
Kyle's suggestion of a Buffalo unit would be my second recommendation
as well. They have been Mac supporters for some time and their
equipment is good. My only question would be if you need to use an
AppleTalk printer on your network. I don't remember off the top of my
head whether the Buffalo router passes AppleTalk or not.

I hope you have better luck with your next router,
