connection. The orange light that says the machine's transmitting
or receiving data still lights up when it's not working, the machine
just can't find the host. The router's connected through DHCP to my
DSL modem, it basically runs at factory settings all the time except
for the SSID is different.

Are the MTU settings the same on all the computers? The MTU is the
number that's usually either 1500 or 1492, and all the computers
should be the same duplex, like half-duplex or full-duplex, and the
same speed. In OSX it's all in the Network settings under ethernet,
if they are all on automatic then that eliminates my idea, because
they would match the settings from the router.
They probably are, because I have no idea what an MTU is or how it
would be different from one machine to the next...

I have a Linksys wireless router, and there are two subnets, one for
wireless and one for ethernet. This will be the same on all routers.
I use static routing, with as few computers as you and I have it's
easier to configure. You can go into the router and change from DHCP
to static, give each computer a different address, (i.e.
192.168.1.x), then go into the network settings of each computer and
make them static and give them one of the addresses you just put into
the router.
The router interface, when my wired machine goes down, will say it's
still connected, with a different address than the iBook that's
interfering. And sometimes it doesn't cause a problem, like if I
start pinging the router from the wired machine, and keep it pinging
while the files transfer, for some reason...

Try making the computers all static, all you need to do is tell the
router which addresses (192.168.1.x) have computers (routing table). I
am guessing you mean by the interface a webpage. It can be
disconnected from the internet if that's what you mean, that has
nothing to do with transfers between computers on the subnet. The
iBook MUST have a different address from the hard wired computer at all
times. Maybe you could try ftp instead of appletalk.

Can I do this? How would I tell the Powerbook to boot off of the

If so, What's the best way to install OS X onto the FW drive? [note:

Simply plug in the drive, format it, and pop in your OS X install CD,
select the drive for install, and install OS X. It's a no brainer.
Once OS X is installed, you can select the startup disk in System
Preferences. If, for example, something is corrupted on your internal
drive in your Pismo and you need to boot from the Firewire drive, then
after you press power on your Pismo (make sure the external drive is
plugged in and powered up), hold down the shift key until you see a
blue screen where you will be able to select a drive to boot from. I
too use a 75 gig external Firewire drive for backup. Works great. .

Replacing hinges on Titanium Powerbook

2005-01-31 Thread Orlando Mac Geek
OK, like many, the hinges on my Titanium Powerbook have failed. As I
understand it there are 3 basic choices.

1. Replace the whole screen.
2. Risk taking the LCD apart and replace just the hinges.
3. Create some make-shift hinges.

Well option 1 is out, WAY too expensive to replace the whole screen.
Option 2 I'll pass on since it seems to be a very difficult operation
and there is a good chance I will screw it up and be forced into
option 1. Now option 3 sounds great.I found this website (
http://www.photo.is/titanium.html ) which describes how to make your
own hinges for about $10. Only problem is I have neither the parts
nor the hand-eye coordination to think that I could do this.

What I want to know is there anyone on list who after taking a look at
those instructions think they could make a set of these hinges for me.
I am willing to offer either $25 cash or a Quadra 660/AV I have
sitting around. Hope to hear from someone.

Website address for the hinges again is http://www.photo.is/titanium.html

Quickbooks

2005-01-31 Thread Claire Hart
I noticed that my PowerBook came preinstalled with Quickbooks 6.0. My
credit union's website says: You can download a QIF file containing
some or all of these records. You can then import this file into your
favorite money management program.

I found that QIF stands for Quicken Interchange Format. In calling my
credit union, I was told that Quicken changed its format about a year
ago, and now Quicken products are the only ones that DO NOT use QIF.
My credit union suggested I use Money by Microsoft, but it's only for
Windows. MYOB's site mentions QIF compatibility, with possible
tweaking required.

I want to go back to January 2004, download my statements, sort them
out in some software, then transfer it to a tax preparation software.
What do you guys suggest?

System Alerts, interface sounds, and iTunes playback. If I adjust
the volume up to even half, it can be heard annoyingly in another

Hi Clark,
Thanks for writing back.
No volume level adjustment has any affect on the start-up chime. I
used the slider in Sys Prefs pane to (1) lowest before off, (2) all
the way down to off, and (3) muted sound, then restarted and each time
chime was very loud. Once desktop comes up, the volume seems to be
where I last set it, which it still quite loud at the lowerst setting.
Previously, I set the volume to three segments using the keyboard
volume keys for average comfortable listening for myself. Now, one
segment is too loud. I am quite stimied by this. My Pismo is over 4
years old now, and a couple times recently the battery has completely
died on me before I could charge it. I think it even died once beyond
the point of holding the Pismo in Sleep mode. I think the volume
anomaly started soon after that incident. So, I wonder if the internal
battery (PRAM) became drained as well, and is now shot.

Scott
Sure sounds like a PRAM battery issue. How long have you allowed the
Pismo to charge undisturbed? Let it sit overnight either off or asleep,
then see how it does on a restart.

In any case, the Pismo PRAM battery is easy to replace.

Anyway, I have no choice but to install Panther after I do my HD erase as it

Unimplemented trap Wallstreet

2005-01-31 Thread CR
Wallstreet OS 9.1
Having difficulty printing from word processors to HP LaserJet 4ml
Can print Excel files but not Word or Simple text
Receive not enough memory dialog
Tried all the recommended memory increases and decreases to no avail
decided I needed to upgrade the LaserWriter driver from 7+ to 8.6.1
Download, install, restart and I get
System Error: Unimplemented trap crash during restart.
The Wallstreet will not recognize my PCMCIA drive with extensions OFF
so I'm unable to run TechTools.
Got it to boot from TechTools CD but it did not recognize the HD
Wondering what to do?
What extentions need to be on to recognize the PCMCIA drive?
I'm stumped.
Thanks
Cliff

Shouldn't that be 'option key'?

Correct, option key. Sorry, shift key is for other diagnostic
purposes. Thanks.

Go to printmonitor in the extensions folder. Increase the memory allotment
for it.

Re: Backup

2005-01-31 Thread Ben Dyer
For me, Backup is very nearly useless. It offers limited options,
doesn't have much flexibility in terms of scheduling, and can't make
complete backups of your drive like CCC can. The only advantage is that
it's free with any .mac subscription.

Cheers,
Ben

Re: A question regarding OpenGL. . .

2005-01-31 Thread Ben Dyer
OpenGL generally isn't user-configurable, except via the preferences or
options dialogs of programs that use it. You could try messing around
with it via the OpenGL Driver Monitor or OpenGL Profiler (in
Developer/Applications/Graphics), but there's not much point in doing
that for most people.

Under OS X, OpenGL hardware acceleration is fully supported on any
machine with a Rage 128 or better (that's Pismo or later for laptops,
and BlueWhite G3 or later for desktops). If you have an AGP card with
16MB or more VRAM, parts of the GUI will be drawn using OpenGL.

All the iTunes Use OpenGL button does is use OpenGL to speed up some
of the 2D drawing operations. If you've got 16MB or more VRAM, the
difference should be noticeable.

Cheers,
Ben

Is OpenGL user configurable? Or is this one of those background

make it work? Or is it always working? I was enjoying the
Visualizer in iTunes today and noticed that under the options
button, I had clicked Use OpenGL. . . which spawned this thread.
Have a great day everyone!

Re: ibook help- no idea why its not working!

2005-01-31 Thread mray
Similar symptoms, different results. Tried assorted fixes (TechTools,
Repair Permissions, etc) so

Brought iBook into Apple store, had tech look at it, from the start-up
or actually lack-of start-up it was determined it was the Logic Board.
He took the iBook gave me a receipt, said about two weeks and a
possible HD re-initialization (already did back-up). 6 days later
(regular days not business days) had my iBook back and all info still
on the HD.

Mark

I don't know what is happening. I tried the first thing you said
and that
didn't work but it sort of did. the computer started up and there
were all
kinds of weird colors and patterns. sort of medieval rug type of
colors.

then I tried the last one. my book is the large size 2 usb model
14.1 from
late 2002, so to reset the p-ram power man you have to press shit,
control,
options, and power together. wait 5 seconds. then start up. that
didn't work

Try making the computers all static, all you need to do is tell the

I am guessing you mean by the interface a webpage. It can be
disconnected from the internet if that's what you mean, that has
nothing to do with transfers between computers on the subnet. The
iBook MUST have a different address from the hard wired computer at
all times. Maybe you could try ftp instead of appletalk.
It does have a different address, every time I look in the information
thing it gives the address of every machine connected, and they're not
the same. They generally seem to get the same address they got the
last time each time they connect, though, so it's more or less static
I guess, even though I didn't set it that way specifically.

Are both computers on the same subnet mask? This is 255.255.255.255 in
mine, it is 255.255.255.0 on yours (I looked at the manual) and both
computers need to have the same mask. I think DHCP takes care of this,
though. It's hard to figure out your problem. I can only get
Appletalk to work one way between my iBook (on wireless) and G5
(wired), the one that mounts the drives can only do the transfers. I
never bothered to waste the time to figure out how to get it to work
both ways. I can use Appletalk both ways between my Linux boxes and
G5, they are both wired.

It would be a good idea to try one of the Networking websites,
dslreports.com is a good one. You can find out what problems your
particular router is giving other people. Upgrading the firmware can
help, or not, it depends.
