Re: More RAM, trade offs ??? (was Memory from iMac G4 to AlBook ?

2005-02-22 Thread Larry le Mac
From: Bruce Johnson [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Are there any trade offs with having 2x512MB in a PBook 15 1.5GHz?
as opposed to one 512MB...
Having to buy two DIMMS to upgrade past 1GB.
Hmm, you obviously don't know me very well... ;o)
I was thinking of swapping the RAM about, so I had 2x256 at
work and 2x512 at home, i.e. not cost involved.
---
I suspect you will be hard pressed to notice the difference between 768 MB
and 1G in most daily stuff.
Thath's answered my question, especially as it is at work where I
need the RAM...

Personally, with a 15 AlBook, I'd go straight to 1.5 or 2GB. RAM isn't
that expensive these days, a 1GB PC2700 SODIMM shouldn't
cost any more than US$250.
*Private* purchase and I am working to a budget...
25% VAT in Sweden
In the next two days I'm buying:
- PowerBook 15
- DVD±RW external FW/USB
- Ext. FW/USB2 400GB harddisk
- Wifi accesspoint
- 17 TFT screen
- Bits and pieces for my 8 disks in a Sawtooth (see G-list)
- Canon EOS-D digitial SLR camera
- and maybe a Mac mini (head vs. the heart)
One can always add RAM later...

Data Memory Systems sell 1 GB for the PowerBook G4 for $229. I bought memory
from them before and always been satisfied. NewEgg.com has also 1 GB memory

However, they don't mention Mac compatibility. So, you have to carefully
check the specs that you need and, if possible, see in their customer

Re: battery life for current ALBook 15 inchers..

2005-02-22 Thread Ben Dyer
The quoted battery life is pretty optimistic. If you dim your screen,
set processor speed to reduced, turn AirPort and Bluetooth off, don't
use any USB or FireWire devices, don't use an external monitor, and set
the hard drive to spin down when possible, you might be able to make
the supposed maximum of 4.5 hours. In normal use, however, 3 hours
sounds about right.

Cheers,
Ben

Interchangeability of Power Adapters

2005-02-22 Thread bobgir2004
I have a Dual-USB, 500MHz G3 12 iBook, with the yo-yo power adapter.

Wife has a G4 iBook, 14, 1.2GHz with the small, white, square brick power
adapter.

When we travel, we prefer to take the smaller G3 iBook.

I searched the Apple site for compatibility issues regarding power adapters
and found this info.

1. Warning: Use only the power adapter that came with your iBook computer.
Adapters for other electronic devices (including other iBook models and
other portable computers) may look similar, but they may affect your
computer¹s performance or damage it.

2. BUT, also found this:

Extra Portable Power Adapter - 65W (for iBook PowerBook)
Important: Compatible with PowerBook G4 (Aluminum or Titanium models) or
dual-USB iBook (500Mhz Power PC G3 or higher).

So, in the words of the frightful Marathon Man, is it safe?

I am making the leap from: IF Apple sells a power adapter that works on
both my wife's G4 iBook and my G3 iBook, THEN the adapter that came with her
G4 should power and charge the battery of my G3 and it's safe to use.

G4 iBook manual says of the power adapter:
Input: AC 100-240 volts 50/60 hertz.
Output: CD 24.5 V, 1.875 A.

From the back of the yo-yo adapter for the G3 iBook:
Input: 100-250V, 50-60 H
Output: 24V

Any engineers our there know for sure??

Many thanks,
bob

Re: Interchangeability of Power Adapters

2005-02-22 Thread gladys perez-almiroty
a while ago i got a nifty adapter that allows to use the a/c adapter
form the pismo on the newer ibook and viseversa. i don't remember where
i got it, but will try to look around. all it is is a plug on one side
smaller than the other that allows you to use the adapters.

I have a Dual-USB, 500MHz G3 12 iBook, with the yo-yo power adapter.
Wife has a G4 iBook, 14, 1.2GHz with the small, white, square brick

adapter.

When we travel, we prefer to take the smaller G3 iBook.
I searched the Apple site for compatibility issues regarding power
adapters
and found this info.

1. Warning: Use only the power adapter that came with your iBook
computer.
Adapters for other electronic devices (including other iBook models
and
other portable computers) may look similar, but they may affect your
computer¹s performance or damage it.

2. BUT, also found this:
Extra Portable Power Adapter - 65W (for iBook PowerBook)
Important: Compatible with PowerBook G4 (Aluminum or Titanium models)
or
dual-USB iBook (500Mhz Power PC G3 or higher).

So, in the words of the frightful Marathon Man, is it safe?
I am making the leap from: IF Apple sells a power adapter that works
on
both my wife's G4 iBook and my G3 iBook, THEN the adapter that came
with her
G4 should power and charge the battery of my G3 and it's safe to use.

Many thanks,
bob

This question came up fairly recently -- the answer is yes, it's fine
to use the PB adapter with the iBook, but you should avoid using the
iBook adapter with the PB if possible, particularly during battery
charging or heavy use (PB adapter is 65W, the iBook's is 45W).

Cheers,
Ben

Re: Interchangeability of Power Adapters

2005-02-22 Thread Valerie Vavrik
I have a PowerBook G4 and several times a day the adapter (that came
with the computer) will suddenly stop giving power. I don't usually
notice it till I get a message that the battery is about to run out. I
have to unplug it and then plug it back in and everything is fine. It
has been doing this for a long time. It is very annoying and if I'm
not using it when the message comes up the computer will go dead.

Any ideas on what can be done about this? Do I need a new power
adapter or is something else going on?

I know that the DC plug that plugs into my iBook sometimes comes a
little loose, the light on the plug goes out and the computer
switches to battery power. I just get used to looking for the light.

If this isn't the case, ie the it's the plug in the wall that you
have to plug back in and it is secure then I'd say your power supply
is failing. Power supplies have internal power protection that shuts
it off if it overloads in some way. While this could be the laptop
you would likely have an indication it was the problem because the
computer would be getting hot.

Re: Interchangeability of Power Adapters

2005-02-22 Thread Valerie Vavrik
My computer always runs very hot so maybe it is the computer. I have
it on an ergonomic stand that props it up and gives it air underneat.
It is plugged in to a new APC Surge Protector w/Battery Backup so I
don't think that is it. If I just unplug the adapter from the computer
and then plug it back in that does not work. I actually have to unplug
the outlet from the surge protector and then plug it back in to get the
power flowing again. I've learned to live with it, but if there was a
fix I would go for it. If I have to leave my computer for a little
while it is frustrating to find it shut down sometimes when I come back
to it.
Thank you.
Val
