Re: Wallstreet Modem not found

2005-03-15 Thread CR
Ooops sorry. running OS 9.1 on the Wallstreet.
and I'm not running Apple works.
I'm running the basic same set up on the Wallstreet
as I am on my 3400.
I'm dialed up on the 3400 right now.
Though interestingly after initial dial up success on the 3400
it's modem got "lost" A TechTools run and Optimization
cured the problem. That's when I tried the same "cure" on the Wallstreet
without success.

I had problems with imac modems not responding and I searched on the
web and found an answer. I don't recall exactly what the process was,
but if you have appleworks, the solution was to go into appleworks and
there is a communications (along with word processing, spreadsheet,
etc) choice when the program opens up. Then you type in a code and the
modem works again. Sorry it's not technical, but I don't have the info
here.

I once read a report of someone's pink screened Lombard being cured with
an nvram reset. While it seemed unlikely, ever since then I've been dying
to see if there's anything to the idea. Care to give it a try?

Use the OpenFirmware nvram reset commands:

Startup into OpenFirmware by holding down key combo cmd-opt-O-F right
after startup.
at prompt type
"reset-nvram" (without quotes of course, and then enter)
it'll say "OK"
 "reset-all" (and enter)
and it'll restart

This will probably have no effect on your screen, but then again . . . ?

Another possibility is that the system folder has been corrupted, one of the
file in it is damaged. Maybe the system file itself...

Kristina: for USB enclosures, check DealMac.com for a USB deal. Remember
that you need an enclosure for a 2.5" drive. Although, if the drive is
really damaged, it might not be worth to get an enclosure since you won't be
able to do anything with the drive. As Bruce suggested, you might be able to
boot from a System CD and see if the drive mounts.

If so do this:
boot from CD. Drag the System File out of the System Folder onto the
desktop from the hard drive (not the CD!).

Close the system folder and drag the System file back onto it. This
're-blesses' the system folder.

The classic sign of an unblessed system folder is that it lacks the

Hi again Bruce, Ken, Malcom

Re my distorted screen problem, and following on from your much
appreciated responses, it turns out my 1998 Wallstreet is a 14.1 inch
screen. (I understand the Wallstreet 13.3 inch screen model has
recognised problems with its cables but not usually the case with the
14.1 inch screen.)

I also wanted to mention, in case it's relevant, that the screen hinges
appear to be fine, ie they are not floppy or rough and the screen stays
in what ever lean-back position I choose. (I gather Wallstreet hinges
are a bit of a weakness.)

In light of the above, I'm wondering if this makes any difference to the
diagnosis?

best, Kerry PS: Thanks Bruce for pointing me towards the
http;//www.pbfixit.com> guides. The people that wrote them are very
convincing in their assurance that anyone can follow the guides, which I
like. It's not often you come across such understanding for the angst
that computer dummies such as myself feel when faced with the prospect
of taking their precious laptop apart.

In the trouble shooting section, I can only find this similar sounding
trouble:

13.3" screen flickers
or shows intermittent
vertical lines

Carefully squeeze the upper left side of the display bezel. If the
problem disappears, dispatch unit for display cable replacement
(13.3" displays only). Do not replace I/O logic board or display.

From: Kristina Rost
Well here I am again, same clicking noise, and can't find the file icon
on by Lombard, running OS 9...REally it crashed alot...very
uncomfortable machine...I want to refine it be a great machine.

So I need some help.
1. I want to recover some info on that drive.
2. Then I guess replace the drive...
3. while I have it open I would like to equip it with a new CD R DVD or
can I get a CDR / DVDR? I want to put grampas slides/fotos onto DVD for
the kids.
4. and maybe while I am wishing a gizmo to do WiFi...

Kristina
If you have access to another old Mac (with a SCSI port) there is a
cable that will let you use your lombard as an external hard drive.
You plug the cable into the HDI-30 port on the back of the Lombard and
into the SCSI port on the host Mac. Turn on the Lombard then the host
and the Lombard hard drive should show up on the host desktop.
Hopefully the host has enough disk space to copy your files over.
This will help if the problem is that the OS is corrupted on your hard
drive. If the data on the drive is corrupted you are out of luck.
If you want to give it a try I can loan you the cable.

Replacing the drive is not hard, I like the idea of having an external
USB enclosure for the old drive. You can use the external drive to back
up the Lombard.

Don't know about internal CD burners, I've had good luck with a Sony
Spressa USB burner. Might be cheaper than an internal burner.

Wireless is pretty easy, there are a fair number of 802.11b cards that
will work with the Apple Airport extensions built into OS 9.

Good Luck

Re: Kernel Panic

2005-03-15 Thread Nancy Lawrence
I don't know if this is relevant since consensus seems to be leaning
towards a RAM issue, but I suffered a kernel panic when my hard drive
got "too full," i.e., not leaving at least 10% empty, something I
didn't know not to do until it was too late. DiskWarrior was the
*only* thing that rescued my data. Luckily for me I got everything
back, promptly installed a bigger drive, and now run at never more than
80% of the capacity of the drive. I haven't had a kernel panic since.
FWIW, I had 1GB third-party RAM installed, up from the stock 256,
throughout the whole ordeal and through every system update (I'm
running 10.3.8 now).

On Mar 14, 2005, at 1:57 PM, Rowan, Michael wrote:

etc. The apple dude yanked the new memory chip (which, when he did
it, had me shaking my head - it was *obvious* to me the upgraded os
was broken since the memory has been fine for months -- what are the
chances that my memory went south at precisely at the moment of
upgrade... )

Sure enough, the thing just booted up and ran flawlessly. Apparently,
the new os level is incredibly sensitive to memory quality. (probably
a feature added by the high end memory makers - since we are
entertaining conspiracy theories on gbooks.)

I thought it was the uplift to 10.3 that did this, but its been a
while. Might have been 10.2.

upgrade went through well apparently until time to reboot. Now it
"kernel panics".
Following Apple's documentation, I've reset NVRAM & PRAM and tried to
boot from the Mac OS X.2 install disc. When this happens, it boots to
the gray apple, then I get video problems (once an overly bright
screen wash, once lots of verticle gray lines) and a freeze. A soft
restart is possible (Apple-ctrl-Power), so I've not reset the PMU.
Reseat your RAM, possibly replace it...such kernel panics are usually
related to poor ram. (although if you had OS 10.1 installed it should
have given you hassles before.)
It could also well be a munged upgrade. Try resetting the PRAM three or
four times in a row (hold down control-alt-p-r until it bongs that many
times. Some people recommend ten times for particularly resilient NVRAM
resets)

Kristina,

What do you mean by "can't find the file icon"?

Are you able to boot off the hard drive?

If not, it might be a little hard to recover something from it. You might
want to consider buying a USB external enclosure for the old drive when you
get the new one. Then, if your PowerBook gets reliable as it should, you can
investigate some tools to recover the data on the old drive in the external
enclosure.

OTOH, if it crashed so often, there might be a lot of corruption on it and
it is possible that recovered files might be useless. You may have waited a
little too long for replacing the drive.

For instructions on how to replace the drive, check
. The have guides that should show your husband how
to replace the drive.

If you're in the market for a Combo drive (read DVDs, read-write CDs), check
PBFixit as well as they are selling replacements for the Lombard/Pismo. You
might pay a little higher but you're almost sure that the drive will fit
nicely in the expansion module which is not always true for other drives.

I'm guessing that with a Yamaha CRW4416SX, you're looking for some kind of
SCSI adapter cable. However, I didn't know that the LaserWriter II NTX had a
SCSI connector... If you have a CompUSA or a Microcenter close, you might
want to go check them. They should have a vast assortment of all kind of
adapter cables.

In the trouble shooting section, I can only find this similar sounding
trouble:

13.3" screen flickers
or shows intermittent
vertical lines

Carefully squeeze the upper left side of the display bezel. If the
problem disappears, dispatch unit for display cable replacement
(13.3" displays only). Do not replace I/O logic board or display.

I suspect that Malcolm is right, it sounds like a loose video cable.

Backlight or inverter board.

Often gets better as it warms up - I have a screen which is like that on

Well, since airwaves can go pretty much anywhere and can be received by any
people within range, all wireless protocols now have some kind of security
layer where you have to authenticate before you can get access. So, if your
coffee shop's wireless router isn't setup for any security, you'll be fine.
If not, you'll have to find a way to provide the password to join their
wireless network. I have, however, no experience with authenticating to a
wireless access point besides the AirPort Base Station...

First off, what kind of "G3" are you talking about?

Re: anyone familiar with this problem?

2005-03-15 Thread MacKenzie, Kerry N.
Thanks Bruce--it's a Wallstreet (thanks VERY much for laying the options
out, too).
The first time the problem occurred, I rebooted immediately (I was still
able to see enough of the menu at the top of screen to do this). After I
rebooted, the screen actually showed up worse--it was still covered in
dotted lines, with the icons unrecognizable, but now the menus at the
top had all but disappeared. I had forgotten the keyboard commands to
shut down so had to leave the machine for several days until I got the
keyboard combination.
Next time I rebooted, using the keyboard, was 5 days later, and at first
things looked hopeful: however, while the screen had almost cleared, it
still showed two short black dotted lines almost halfway down it. Plus,
there were "pulsating" dotted lines at the very top and bottom of the
screen. (Ordinarily, I probably wouldn't have even noticed these, but by
now I'm looking for every little aberration.)
After I logged on, and began scrolling down the first page of the site I
was on, the problem started all over. A mass of dotted lines replaced
the text and graphics.
Hope that gives some insight.
Kerry

two questions:

What model do you have?
What does the screen look like when you reboot?

There were 4 G3 Mac Powerbook models.

The original Powerbook G3, which looks like a 5300, aka the Kanga.

Then there was the Powerbook G3 Series, aka the Wallstreet.

 (also a series II)

It has two PCMCIA slots and SCSI on the back.

Next was the Powerbook G3 (bronze Keyboard) aka the Lombard. It has
only one pcmcia slot, SCSI and USB ports, and the afore mentioned
bronze keyboard. (kinda brownish transparent keys)

Finally there was the Powerbook G3 Series Firewire, aka the Pismo. It
has no SCSI, but does have firewire slots, and the same bronze
keyboard.

The fact that it got worse after being on a longer time implies a
hardware problem, getting worse as the system gets hotter.

Good to know. Thanks for the replies, all. There is no password
involved. It already connects to the dsl modem without trouble, I
can't imagine it's going to be different if the computer goes wireless.

I'm sure there will be more questions as I get the airport card and

Even if I were loaded with money I wouldn't out of principle. Perhaps
give the difference to charity instead.
Also, "other sources" doesn't equal ALL other sources, so your not good
experiences can only serve as an experience for the vendors you have
used, none other.

In addition, unless people choose other suppliers for RAM Apple will keep
their artificially high prices instead of getting real and be
competitive. Better now, than when they are on the brink again. And if
Apple grow complacent again, that WILL happen.

Phones, iSync and PowerBooks

2005-03-15 Thread James Calderbank
Hi All,
I have been using iSync to sync my AlBook to a Palm Tungsten T, a .Mac
account and a Nokia 6600 phone. All works fine (although sometimes a
little shaky). I now have a newer Nokia phone but it is still Symbian
based as is the 6600. Problem is that the Bluetooth setup on the
AlBook will only allow it to be set up for modem use, not for iSync or
address book integration.

Whilst I understand that the phones are diffferent, as iSync is based
on the SyncML standard, I would have thought there would be a way to
get this going.

Has anyone got "unsupported" phones working with iSync? Or has anyone
found an alternative to allow iCal and Address Book to sync to newer
phones from the Mac?

Any comments/ideas/etc would be gratefully received.
James

I have a G4 iBook with the Airport Extreme card installed, I can access
wireless networks anywhere provided there is no password set on it. Can't
imagine that the original Airport card would work any differently.
