Depends on the library (or whoever the WAP owner may be). It's

Re: re home net

2005-04-04 Thread Luis Sequeira
Vicki,
The graphite ABS cannot be used as a bridge. The ethernet port on
the station is designed only as an uplink to your DSL/Cable modem.
New versions of the ABS -- Snow and Extreme -- have a dedicated
WAN port that allows bridging. Having said that, there's several
inexpensive alternatives these days ($100) that you should be able
to find at your local computer store that will allow you to bridge
your network.

As a side note, if you run an 802.11b (11 mbps) base station or
client on your 802.11g (54 mbps) network, it will cause the base
station to revert to 802.11b (slower) speeds. To take full advantage
of the 802.11g protocol, it's best to ensure that all clients are
802.11g capable and running in full 802.11g mode.

HTH,
-patch
P.S. Here's a webpage with more info:
http://www.vonwentzel.net/ABS/Evolution/index.html
Maybe this does not help, but the Graphite Base Station *can* be used
as a bridge.
I have one. It is set up with a checkmark on Enable Airport to
Ethenet Bridging and with all options for Nat and Dhcp turned
off.

Granted, my setup is different than Vicki's, in that my base station
is *wired* to the modem/router and my 'books connect *wirelessly* to
the BS. Nevertheless, wired and wireless computers do connect to
each other and to the internet. Whether this may also work the other
way around, I do not know, but it wouldn't hurt to try.

Backup after succesful installation with CCC or whatever and do it last.
I had both problems and success, but didn't notice much improvement.
Maybe 2-4%. 512MB RAM will give you a more substantial and reliable boost.

I've got a 10.3 DVD... Any ideas on how I can install this on my
Wallstreet?
Trade it for the CD version? Actually, if the license for the DVD is
yours I think it's legal to obtain CD copies from elsewhere, though this
may be different where you live.

Can I copy the data portion of the 10.3 DVD to my Wallstreet's HD and
install from there using XPostFacto? Has anyone here tried that?
If you make 2 partitions, that may work, but you probably have to live
with those 2 partitions after installation. Personally, I prefer to keep
my User folder on the second partition as reformatting and complete
reinstallations, backups are so much easier to do.

 I won't run the network
without WEP, so turning off encryption is a non-starter. Has anyone
gotten this combination to work?
I'm pretty sure you'll have to choose adapted installation and point out
the driver OR open the package with Pacifist and install it by hand. On
my WSII/PDQ the driver itself wasn't installed under Panther at least
(didn't try Jaguar).

their stores have free WiFi and they are in all major cities. Alternatively
you could sign-up for T-Mobile WiFi for 30 USD/month for unlimited access in
all Borders Bookstores, Starbucks Coffee shops and few other places. Check
their site (http://www.t-mobile.com/hotspot/), you can cancel after you

Re: SV: iBook screen went black

2005-04-04 Thread Malcolm Cornelius

 This is the G4 iBook, 1.2 Ghz, 12 - new November 2004.

Take it into Apple for repair ?

the _screen_ itself that goes black or very dark, not the machine
that isn't powering up. It is on, the light on the screen is just out.
The book is on, and works correctly I think, only the light on the
screen does not work. I can see what is on the screen vaguely if I hold
it up against the light, just enough to see the cursor so I can manage
to turn it off, re-start or something like that

Backlight not working.

Could be the bulb, inverter board or most likely the cable which goes thru
the RH hinge.

player is set for. Would you like to change it? You can change it only 4
more times...etc., etc.

Can anyone explain this. Should I change it or not? Can I download software
to fix this. I have heard of region free but don't really know what it is.

Thanks.

If you need a desktop and you are cash strapped (join the club) I would
pick up an external monitor, keyboard and mouse. The video adapter for
my powerbook was $25.00, a usb keyboard and mouse is another $40. If
you need more room or a better CD burner you can go with external
firewire.

I run the above setup, Fireware drives, usb keyboard/mouse and video
with my powerbook. I also picked up a $40 USB/KVM switch so I can use
my PeeCee and my powerbook. I suspect my powerbook is getting some
PeeCee Cotties even tho I run a recent version of
Bill_Gates_Blocker_2005.

Like I said, I do have a BW G4 :-)

Fwd: Lombard with blown cache update

2005-04-04 Thread Andrew in Ann Arbor
As you may recall I just lost the L2 cache on my 400 Mhz Lombard.
I have offers of replacement cards from a few list members but there are
a few other symptoms I'm concerned about.
The most notable change is a high pitched whistle when I put the
computer to sleep.
I can't hear the noise when I spin down the hard drive.
I've got the speaker volume all the way down.
The noise doesn't change when I remove the battery.
The pitch changes when I unplug the charger (with the battery in).
I'm worried that the noise is the sound of the power management
circuitry dying in which case I may not bother replacing the processor.
Has anyone else experienced this noise?
Even better has anyone figured out what causes it?

thanks

NewerTech is selling higher capacity batteries. You can get them from Other
World Computing http://eshop.macsales.com/.

I purchased one myself from Laptops-Battery.com.
http://www.laptops-battery.com/catalog/product_info.php/manufacturers_id/3/

SV: Short-term ISP, try access-4-free

2005-04-04 Thread Aase Marit Waage
Hi Lawrence,

I have had lots of PB's (Mac PowerBooks right?) over the years, but a
few months ago, I got a new iBook, also my first with the wireless
option. So I got an Apple Airport Express base for at home, which is a
neat little thing. I have already taken the iBook with me to hotels and
such, and used their wireless Internet. Some places they will give you a
card or note with a user name and password good for e.g. 24 hours. Other
places you will be automatically routed or have to enter their web site
yourself, which contains information about how to access. Most often
there is a link to a web site where you can pay for e.g. 2 hours, 4
hours, 12 hours or 24 hours, using your credit card. So you won`t get
past their web site without paying. It varies a lot... Wherever you are,
you will have to check. I know that here, e.g. at the big airport in
Oslo, you can go straight on if you have a company subscription to the
earlier public phone company for your cell phone, but if you don't have
that, you have to pay with a credit card. We just started using a
different hotel with an association I am the Pres. Of, and I real soon
felt at home there, they give you cards with free access for 24 hours at
a time, when it's up, you just get a new one. So neat!!! Surfing in bed
instead of only having the cable TV as entertainment after a long day
with meetings etc. I loved it! I did not get my mail up and going there
though, so when I was going to send an e-mail, I registered for a
hotmail account which I could access from the Internet. I could fetch
mail fine, just not send.

I would guess that this works about the same way in other countries
also, but I am not sure... I am in Norway.

My latest PB is the first one with a wireless option. I'm pretty much
ignorant about how it works to simply sit outside a library and tap
into their network. Don't I need a password and stuff like that in
order to get on line?

SV: iBook screen went black

2005-04-04 Thread Aase Marit Waage
A little update... I just got a mail from the guy I bought it from, and
he thinks the problem with my iBook is that the backlight is broken.
Seems very logical to me too. Anybody know if this has been a problem in
other iBooks?
He had not sent in the papers registering the computer over to my name,
he had not found the address in Norway to send it to (he is now in
France himself). He took pics of the papers now though, and is sending
the originals snail mail to me, so I can send them in. Besides, I have
all the papers with his name on, the serial number etc. So I should be
fine getting them to fix it on the Apple Care plan.

Tomorrow I will have to make some phone calls to find out for sure which
company it is I need to contact. I think it is a company called Infocare
or something like that, that does the AppleCare for Apple Norway. I sure
hope that they have a place her in my city, at least I know that there
is a workshop fixing Apple's here... Crossing my fingers that it won't
take too long. I hate this PC so much, it is annoying to use!!! But, I
am quite grateful that I have it right now, or I would be in real
trouble. As soon as I get the iBook back OK, I will persue getting the
Pismo fixed. That one is on another plan for when problems arise etc.
though. I wouldn't be too surprised if they don't want to fix it though,
after all, it is real old, the HDD makes funny noises and now the screen
also??? I hope it works out, because I know I need to be sure that I
have one working computer at all times...

I would appreciate it a lot if any of you can tell me if you think it
sounds sensible that it is the backlight that stopped working or if you
think it sounds like something else...

Thanks a lot! I am so glad that I finally am able to post to this list
again I have been waiting for a long time. When I started having my
mails bounce, the message said I could write to an e-mail address to ask
them to fix things if I meant it was in error. Only my mails to that
address also bounced, so it sure did not help much. My ISP also tried to
mail that address, and got the mails back. So I did not know how to
possibly contact the list owner... My ISP went in contact with UPC
further south in Europe, I think, and got them to help sorting this
problem out, because it was a problem for many users that certain
servers for some odd reason had black listed UPC's servers in Europe...
Have no idea why, I really don't think they are commonly used by
spammers and such...

Hi,

This is the G4 iBook, 1.2 Ghz, 12 - new November 2004.

Thanks a lot for your input, but I was probably not clear enough, so I
don't think your answer applies to this problem. Let me clarify... It is
just the _screen_ itself that goes black or very dark, not the machine
that isn't powering up. It is on, the light on the screen is just out.
The book is on, and works correctly I think, only the light on the
screen does not work. I can see what is on the screen vaguely if I hold
it up against the light, just enough to see the cursor so I can manage
to turn it off, re-start or something like that. It is not enough to
read anything or use the computer though. It is as if you adjust the
light on the screen down all the way until it goes completely dark. The
first thing I did, was adjusting it to max. brightness, so it is not
anything simple as that... I get a feeling that it is a hardware
problem, but it would of course be wonderful if it wasn't...

SV: re home net

2005-04-04 Thread Aase Marit Waage
Hi,

Forgive me for jumping in and if I am now posting about something
different than you are talking about... Just thought that if it could be
useful, it could save you a few bucks...

There is a store on eBay that sells Wi-Fi base stations (802.11g) for
around $24.90 or something like that. I have them bookmarked on my
iBook, but of course I can't access that right now... But if you go and
do a search on eBay, in the stores, you should be able to find
something. If you can wait, you can let me know and I will find it as
soon as I get the iBook fixed... Try searching for wireless router or
something like that.

I e-mailed them to ask about these routers, as a friend of mine was
interested. They said they would work both for PC's and Mac's. I never
thought you could get something like that for that ridiculous price... I
paid a lot more for my airport express, but I am really happy with it
and it was no work at all to set up... Can't remember the other
specifics about it, e.g. how many computers you could hook up to it if
you used it for a home network etc., but I am sure the listings gives
these details. You can also get quite good prices for airport
express/extreme on eBay...

Of course I have no idea at all about the quality of these things, but I
am sure that if you found the listings, and could post here about the
type/brand etc., somebody would know...

Get AirPort or Airport Extreme card and have breakfast in Panera stores.
All
their stores have free WiFi and they are in all major cities.
Alternatively
you could sign-up for T-Mobile WiFi for 30 USD/month for unlimited
access in
all Borders Bookstores, Starbucks Coffee shops and few other places.
Check
their site (http://www.t-mobile.com/hotspot/), you can cancel after you
leave the country.

SV: SV: iBook screen went black

2005-04-04 Thread Aase Marit Waage
Hi Malcolm,

Thanks a lot!!! Sorry that I posted a little while ago, I looked for
more postings, but overlooked yours...

I was thinking about something going through the hinge, because as I had
put it down on my recliner stool before I took it up on my lap again,
the screen had adjusted itself backwards a bit. It was as I turned it
back up again that it went black on me... So I was thinking that maybe
some cable broke, something like that? But I don't have a clue as to how
these things work...

I will just have to make some phone calls tomorrow to find out where I
can take it in. Hopefully it is here in my city, so I won't have to send
it off... Hope they can do it quite quickly... The one local workshop I
know about which is authorized to fix Mac's, fixed a colleague's Mac a
while ago, and they took a long time doing it... She wasn't too happy...
I will just have to cross my fingers. I have a lot of stuff on it which
I need, so sending it off isn't too cool...

Thanks again!

Aase :)

What does living in a vehicle have to do with using a wireless 'net service?

Depends on the library (or whoever the WAP owner may be). It's
always best to walk inside and ask them. Even if they've left
things unpassworded, to use it without authorization is Theft Of
Services.
Just checked with my local library. They offer free wireless network
access to all their cardholders. Their WAPs cover the entire
grounds, and the adjacent park. For non-local residents, the service
is $5/day.

I just use my server space provided for free from my ISP. I have a
complete website I created for my family with 100's of photos, as well
as photos for eBay. The great thing about doing this is that you don't
have to worry about ads. I use a simple but powerful FTP client,
called Fetch. Check with your ISP and find out what they offer with
your account. For example, DSL Extreme offers 25 megabytes of server
space for each email account, giving 10 email accounts. Earthlink
offers 8 email accounts with up to 10 megabytes of server space for
each account. Charter has 10 email accounts with up to 10 megs per
account, etc. Hope this helps,

Is there a cheap, inexpensive (actually that should read FREE) way of
syncing a folder between a laptop and a tower?

I would like to be able to take my laptop wherever, do some work and
then when I come home and get back onto my LAN the machines
automatically sync the changes or additions I've done. Or vice
versawork on the tower, open the laptop to go and the folders sync.

I tried a demo of You Synchronize awhile back and it trashed files that
I didn't want trashed...and I really took my time to figure out how to
do it., So, I either made a mistake or something was wrong. Of

You shouldn't need a password if it's a public place. Most times you
need a password are your own network sometimes and if you're at an
office with a closed wireless. But for a library, you should be able
to just tap in... make sure you look for weirdos before you do any
parking though. ;-)

Zotan,
This is an obvious choice.
One I didn't really take full advantage of when
I was connected via MegaPath DSL.
But now I live at the end of a country road,
no cable, no DSL. Fortunately, I have a WiFi connection
to a tower on top of a nearby mountain.
Not bad, way better than dial up, but no web hosting, ftp.
or that sort of stuff.
Thanks,

snipped stuff
Oh, and Airport won't work more than 20 feet away from my DLink router.
It drops one bar when I move it across the room, which is 10 feet
square. Even my old Ti gets about 40 feet, the Pismo gets 100.
They pinched the AP cable putting it back together, that'll need to be
replaced.

Shame about your combo drive getting the heave-ho, what are the chances
you'll ever see that again?!?

Replacement CDROM for clamshell

2005-04-04 Thread Van Snyder
Does anyone know if the clamshell CDROM is specific to the iBook - or
is there a standard form factor that will work? Thanks for your help.
