Bzztt. Wrong answer! What you have is plain old 220 single phase
just like virtually everyone else has. Actual two-phase power hasn't
been used in this country for decades, and when it was, it was for
industrial use only. It was NEVER installed in homes. Where it was used
was predominantly in a few New England states. I belong to an old
woodworking machine Yahoo group with a couple thousand members. These
guys live to collect and restore old machinery. The older and bigger,
the better! To most of them, a 12 jointer or 36 bandsaw is small
stuff. Out of all those folks I'm only aware of two people who actually
own any two-phase powered machinery. They have had to do some fancy
electrical tricks to be able to run these old machines. Makes the
three-phase converters that most of us have seem like child's play! If
you really want to know more about two-phase, go to the OWWM Yahoo group
list achives and do a search on two-phase power. This was a topic of
discussion on the email list just a few months ago. We have guys on the
list who live for this kind of stuff.

JR (who has a degree in industrial maintenance, and has worked with
single and three-phase for more years than I want to think about)

Portable Style Writer OK?

2005-04-19 Thread illovox
Here's a question like a blast from the past:

I just found a Portable Stylewriter in a thriftstore--remarkably compact and
useful--would love to use it with my Lombard. Only thing is, it looks like
a Parallel printer...did Apple make such beasts? If so, any way to get this
thing to work with even a Wallstreet? Some kind of Parallel to Serial
adapter?

TIA. :)

I have one of these collecting dust - a legacy from the days when
Apple made printers and monitors etc. One thing - heads may be dried
up beyond resurrection now - I've had that witha couple of older
inkjets and finally dumped them as it was costing me a fortune in ink
and cleaning kit

Don't know how you'll connect it up - try looking for a StyleWriter. I
turned down a very nice looking Black 2200 the other day as there was
no PSU for it. It's a bit of an odd voltage so you can't just get one
anywhere. Pity, it would have looked cool next to my Pismo. Or even
gone as part of a apckage with the black 5500/275 that will be going
on eBay soon

Good luck

Dear Mark,
I don't know any utility that can do that. You'll probably have to

WAIT!! you don't need to do that. Use FWB hard disk toolkit, which
can remap on the fly with a non-destructive test. This is the best
disk software I know of.

Oh yes, don't use the computer at all until you fix it. If you hit
that block, you're in trouble.

It is expensive. Um, how can I put this? If you know how to use an
FTP client, someone told me that they seem to have left the golden

probably would be illegal and unethical to download it. :-)

Of course, if you have a backup, you could just reinitialse as suggested.

The printer is actually a Canon.
Apple bundled the Portable SW with a serial-parallel adapter and a
software nad by GDT.

The same company did the POwerPrint series of adapters and a great
software to connect to the mac most of the PC printers.

You will need the adapter and a specific software.
I can provide you for free with the original software that shipped
with the Portable SW, it is now obsolete.

Consider that to use it with 7.5 or 8 you probably need the
PowerPrint software and indicate the printer as a canon BJ10e or so.

Definitevely it will not work with any of the Printer that the OS
installer put into the chooser.

I have to agree. I'm an EE and if any of my old profs heard me call
residential/commercial centertapped 240 V as two phase -- why,
they'd flail me with a Smith Chart.

And if John wants weird, how about 6-phase? Or 16.33 Hz. Recall that
it was common for large Industrial Age factories to generate their
own power, and they thus got to decide exactly what they wanted. Some
still do to this day, such in paper mills, etc. There was an
explosion at the Ford complex's power plant in Detroit a few years
ago; I recall because several people died.

PowerBook G4 power supply issues

2005-04-19 Thread Mark Round
Hi all,

I have a problem with my recently purchased 15'' Powerbook G4, and I'd
appreciate any input you may be able to offer. I've already had one
support call logged with Apple, but my reasoning behind posting here
first before I call them again is so that I can gather all available
information that may be relevant. I'm somewhat new to Macs, having
come from a Unix background (primarily Solaris).

To cut a long story short, I've been having trouble with the power
supply that came with the powerbook. The first one I had blew up with
an audible pop noise, and the laptop went completely dead - black
screen, no power, nothing - despite having a fully charged battery
available. After disconnecting the PSU, I turned the laptop back on,
and it seemed OK. I sent the psu back to Apple, and got a replacement;
now it seems that this one is playing up.

At intervals, the power supply turns itself off. The green/amber light
at the tip of the plug goes out, and the laptop switches to battery
power. Unplugging the power supply, waiting 30 seconds and then
plugging it back in seems to solve the problem. However, a few nights
ago the light went out, and the laptop suddenly shut itself down
again.

I have discovered (through digging through
/private/var/log/system.log) that on both occasions when the laptop
shut itself down, on restart the date was set to Jan 01, 1908 and
there was an error message complaining the the PMU has been reset. It
may be a coincidence, but both times the laptop switched off, there
was an iPod plugged in at the time.

I have since tried manually resetting the PMU myself, but I was
wondering if there were any additional diagnostics I could run that
may further narrow the problem down, or other logs I could examine. Is
it likely to be just a PSU issue, or is it likely to be the case that
there is a problem with the laptop itself ? I have read many pages on
the 'web describing problems with Apple's power units, but have so far
not come across anyone experiencing the sudden shutdown issue that
I've had.

Any pointers or information much appreciated!

Thanks in advance,

-Mark

Personally, I feel updating a Ti-400 isn't worth $2-300-. For Ebayers it
should be noted that one have to replace the cables too in the Mercury

program/script that would automatically back up the new additions on a
daily basis at a certain time.

I use Tri-Backup 4 http://www.tri-edre.com for backing up to a file
server as well as locally, and then burn the local stuff to disc. I
especially like the Incremental and Evolutive modes that keeps successive
versions of files. The price is $49 and they have multiplepack pricing too.
The only downside is that it doesn't directly support writing to CD/DVD.
I just asked them if they are going to incorporate it in the future.

John thank you. Someone else suggested simply using a S-video cable

Bzztt. Wrong answer! What you have is plain old 220 single
phase just like virtually everyone else has. Actual two-phase power
hasn't been used in this country for decades, and when it was, it
was for industrial use only. It was NEVER installed in homes.

I have to agree. I'm an EE and if any of my old profs heard me call
residential/commercial centertapped 240 V as two phase -- why,
they'd flail me with a Smith Chart.
I'm also an EE here and I don't recall what my professors may have
said on the subject. I don't much care cause they didn't do much
with household power. I still use the term as it's accurate and it
fits.

Replacing the drive on these is reasonably easy, see pbfixit.com for
 both instructions and parts/prices.

 Personally, I feel updating a Ti-400 isn't worth $2-300-. For Ebayers it
should be noted that one have to replace the cables too in the Mercury
that came without a burn capability. I assume those come with the untis
 PBfixit sells.

Thanks for this. I'm thinking a 2.0 USB PC card with 2 ports, one to an
external CD burner and the other to the printer

Daniel Colwell said:

So... Could running these instructions fry a motherboard? I don't know

I don't think so, but sometimes a machine under this treatment can seem
dead for a couple of days, for reasons unknown to me. I think the Apple
shop *possibly* fooled him into thinking the problem was more serious
that it really was. Powerbooks may sometimes appear dead, when the backup
battery have been depleted as that, in some models at least, seem to be
connected to PMU control or closeby services.

A couple of friends had Apple South Africa tell them 2 machines ( a pismo
and a PB G4) had problems needing expensive replacements, both which I
fixed for fraction of that cost. And most repair shops *don't* make very
deep investigations for cost reasons (they charge a hefty hourly bill).

Personally I felt liberated abandoning the 1024 x 768 prison. I won't go back.
