Stalling ADSL connection, router ?!?

2005-04-29 Thread Larry le Mac
I have just connected a straight forward D-link ADSL router
and now the Internet connection stalls on and off, or at least
I think it's the router...
It works for a period of around a couple of minutes (haven't
timed it) and then everything (Internet, not the Mac) stalls.
All loading web pages in Safari just wait and any downloads
or uploads in Carracho show as (Stalled), and then after
about 10-30 seconds (haven't timed that either) everything
comes back on as usual.
Never had this before.
Any ideas ?

Re: Tiger available?

2005-04-29 Thread Van Snyder
I spoke with Apple telesales - The only thing shipping with Tiger
today are the new PowerMacs. Now they need to update all other stock,
with ref'd items being last. I'm almost certain my brother-in-laws
ref'd PB12 came with Jaguar installed and Panther discs thrown in the
box - this was shortly after Panther made it's debut. So we'll hold
for a week.

My Linksys has a check box on the setup page for Keep Active.

The function of this setting appears to be to keep the provider from
placing the connection in an inactive status which must be
powered up when traffic starts again.

Do you have a browser based interface to the router?

Pismo and Wallstreet RAM questions...

2005-04-29 Thread Pacer
My Fellow PowerBook-philes,

I was wondering -- is the RAM on a Wallstreet compatible with the RAM on
a Pismo?

The reason I ask is that I have a relative abundance of Wallstreet RAM
(over 1 gig, split between upper and lower) and I have a Pismo on the
way that only has 192 RAM.

I am tempted to just buy new RAM and max it out cheap-like, but it will
set me back about $180 or so and the idea was to have a cheap Book for
my GF.

(Yes, I ended up getting a Pismo for her I decided I wanted to
surprise her by making her games work -- plus, it will impress upon her
the selection of PC software titles also available on Mac. The goal
here is to win her over to Mac for life -- especially if we end up going
the distance. [g])

I am already looking at eating about $100 for an airport card, so I'd
rather not push the RAM up to where I could have gotten her an iBook Ice
or something.

Still, it would be ... ironic for her Pismo to be decked out with more
RAM than my brand new 1.2ghz iBook (at 748). And if I add the 40gig HD
  hehe.

Oh, one other thing -- how do the size profiles of the Wallstreet and
Pismo compare?

Sincerely,
Pacer the now-broke
Oh crap, now how am I going to pay for Law School...?

Hi Van,
Thanks again. The Belkin 7010 card box had nothing of the sort. However
the web site made the same claim re being compatible with 1026 and
103X. Wonder Why the Asanté doen't work with an APEBS??? BTW the Belkin
7010, Ver. 3001 does work well in my Wallstreet (1028) and Pismo (1036)
using the driver from Ralink who made the chipset. It is superior to
the original Airport card in the Pismo!!! Still wished it worked with
apple's driver.

My Linksys has a check box on the setup page for Keep Active.
It's a D-link and there's an option called Auto-reconnect
and that is enabled, but I believe that is to do with the actual
ADSL session, so that one doesn't have to log back in if
the computer has been inactive for a long time.
What I am talking about here is a stall of around 20 seconds
where no traffic occurs, but the computer responds ok.

Actually, I think this is not necessary anymore and at the very least one
doesn't have to keep the L2 cache turned off in ordet to run 10.3 on a

in the Alpha and Beta stages. I recommend to read about user experiences
with similar machines in the user forums. Also one should remember that
WS I and WS II (PDQ) machines may behave very different with XPF.

Installation of 10.4

2005-04-29 Thread Tim Collier
Sorry for this cross posting, but I have all of these: G4 Tower,
iMac and iBook.
I Installed 10.4 on the G5 iMac first, it went flawlessly and not one
problem. The G4 Tower is a dual 1 gig Quicksilver and it took a
total of 3 attempts at installation before it finally worked. The
iBook installed just like the iMac. The iBook is a G4 1.2 gig 12

Thought I would let everybody know my experience.

Re: Replace hard drive in Wallstreet

2005-04-29 Thread Bob
The National Enquirer reports at 3:11 PM -0500 4/27/05, Scott Birdwell wrote:

Ed,
Be aware that our magnanimous sponsor, Low End Mac, warns,
According to the Road Warrior and Other World Computing, the drive
controller in G3 PowerBooks is incompatible with ATA-6 hard drives.
When replacing the internal hard drive, you should be sure to obtain an
ATA-5 complaint drive, which supports transfer speeds of up to 100
MB/sec. As for a reference manual, your best bet is to go to:
http://www.pbfixit.com/Guide/?p=Wallstreet*00 and check out the Fix It
Guide. I've used it a lot. Even better it's free! As to the level of
difficulty, it is relatively easy IMHO. Hope this helps.

I had decided to stop replying to posts on this list. The last 2 or 3
times I've posted questions they didn't merit anybody's time or
effort. AFAIC help is a two-way street. But I can't let this pass.

The information above is absolutely incorrect (not the source, but
the information). Below is information that I accumulated some time
ago when researching the subject.

And I can contradict it from personal experience. I just bought 2
ATA-6 drives for one of my Wallstreets. One drive I have partitioned
and connected externally. The second one I just installed internally
and loaded with OS 9 X with no problems.

For reference, it is common to refer to IDE drives as:
ATA/66 (ATA-5)
ATA/100 (ATA-6)
ATA/133
SATA

It's important to realize that despite all of the various names and
flavors, for the most part IDE/ATA is IDE/ATA. Especially since the
late 1990s, virtually all IDE/ATA drives and controllers will work
together with a minimum of fuss. The folks who create the IDE/ATA
standards always ensure backwards compatibility. This means that a
drive corresponding to a newer standard will still work on an IDE
channel in an older PC. Similarly, older drives will work on newer
systems, in most cases. When older and newer hardware are mixed, the
newer hardware will just run at whatever the maximum speed is of the
older hardware.

For example, suppose you want to use an older hard disk that does not
support Ultra DMA, on a newer PC with Ultra DMA support. This will
work fine, but the drive won't run at Ultra DMA speed. As a second
example, suppose you want to install a new hard drive that runs Ultra
DMA/100 on an older PC with a hard disk controller only supporting
Ultra DMA/33. This will also work, but the drive's throughput will be
limited to 33 MB/s. IDE hard drives are designed to be both backwards
and forwards compatible.

When you talk about a Wallstreet, you are referring to a 2.5-inch
hard drive, not the 3.5-inch drives commonly found in desktop
computers. With the exception of proprietary connectors from folks
like Compaq, these are all interchangeable also. ATA-5 and ATA-6 use
the same connector. In some cases a pin may be missing or the
connectors might be color coded. It's no big deal.
http://www.pcguide.com/ref/hdd/if/ide/conf_Cable.htm

See this really good comprehensive tutorial:
http://www.pcguide.com/ref/hdd/if/ide/index.htm
http://www.pcguide.com/ref/hdd/if/ide/unstd.htm

FWIW every drive that I've bought for a PB over the past 4 years or
so has been an IBM (now Hitachi) Travelstar. Every manufacturer will
have bad drives from time to time. I like the Hitachi's 3-year
warranty. Someone else (Maxtor?) has a 5-year warranty, but I'm
partial to IBM/Hitachi.

ZipZoomFly (formerly Googlegear) has been my vendor of choice for
great prices and free 2nd-day delivery.

YMMV,

I finally have all the software needed for OS X and want to delete OS
9/Classic from my iBook. Is there any easy way to do this or is a clean
install of X the way to go?
Reinstalling X is not a huge issue, but if I can save a few hours, it'd be
 nice!

Thanks for any advice y'all might have!

 Amanda

Is OS 9 installed on a separate partition or on the same partition than OS
X?

dinosaur n.: 1. Any hardware requiring raised flooring and special power.
Used especially of old minis and mainframes, in contrast with newer
microprocessor-based machines. In a famous quote from the 1988 Unix EXPO,
Bill Joy compared the liquid-cooled mainframe in the massive IBM display
with a grazing dinosaur with a truck outside pumping its bodily fluids
through it. IBM was not amused. Compare big iron; see also mainframe. 2.
[IBM] A very conservative user; a zipperhead.
