Bingo! Apparently iTunesHelper launches with iTunes but continues
running after iTunes has been quit. Quitting iTunesHelper via the
Activity Monitor did the trick.

Re: wireless range

2005-05-04 Thread Rick McCutcheon

Someone recently posted a wireless router on the swap list and
mentioned in passing that It is a fact that Wireless B products have
a longer range than their G counterparts. Can someone confirm this?
G routers fall back to B when find a single B-only client, or the
range exceeds the few hundred feet G can handle...

Thanks David.

Yes. Higher data rate == shorter range.
From Apple's tech specs on the Airport Extreme:
Range (2)
* 50-foot range from the base station in typical use at 54 Mbps
data rate (range depends on building construction) (1)
* 150-foot range from the base station in typical use at 11 Mbps
data rate (range depends on building construction)

This is about right for any consumer-level WAP.

Any recommendations on brands that work well with a TiBook (Mercury)
with a built in apple card?

Pretty much any will. 802.11b/g is a bog-standard protocol, and I
haven't run into a wireless router that wasn't controlled through a web
browser in a long time (other than airports, that is)

ADSL - 255.255.0.0 - going crazy

2005-05-04 Thread Larry le Mac
I have a problem with my wife's new TiBook 400MHz
and I'm going crazy...
We have ADSL and everything works fine with my G4
QuickSilver, but her TiBook (X.3.9) will not receive a
valid IP address, 169.smoething...
I have run permissions repair and all, no difference.
The subnet mask is 255.255.0.0 which is something I
recognise from previous instances with this problems
with other Macs.
I literally take the Ethernet cable from the QuickSilver,
plug it in the back of the TiBook, nothing, and then putting
it back into the QS, everything works straight away.
I have restarted, fiddled, restarted, switched off the IPv6
which I read somewhere could help, but nothing works.
Any ideas ???
Also, why can one not set the subnet mask manually while
keeping DHCP with automatic IP address assignment ???

Do you have a router connected to your ADSL modem? If not, then it probably
explains why. Somehow, your provided has registered the MAC address of your
QuickSilver and will hand out an IP address only to that machine.

If you do have a router, then it is probably misconfigured.

Hello all,
I've been hearing a lot lately about Tiger this and Tiger that. .

didn't go to Jaguar until about 7 months after it was released.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but it seems that people these days just can't
wait to run down to the Apple Store to pop in the latest and greatest

You're spot on, direct to ADSL modem.

The reason why I haven't been using my D-Link DI-604 Router
is because I have serious problems keeping it open. It keeps
stalling, or dropping the line or something.
D-Link suggested lowering the MTU to 1400, but that sounds a

That's odd because I'm using the exact same router and never had the

Have you checked the version of the firmware in it? Maybe there is a newer
version?

There aren't, to my knowledge piles of bugs in Tiger. There is one
known bug, in the VPN code that's causing problems, and some programs
need to be updated.

But if you go to someplace like macintouch or MacFixit to get your
sense of the release, you'll thing that 10.4 is buggier than Windows
3.0...

MacFixit, in particular will pass along ANYthing. Macintouch will try
to get confirmation on things. 'Did this happen to more than one
person?'

MacFixit:
Joe Blow says that when he upgraded to 10.4 his mouse stopped working
entirely. Don't install 10.4 or your mouse stops working.

Ten minutes later
Joe says he fixed it, the cat pulled it out of the USB socket.
I always take what I find on these and the Apple forums with some
grains of salt...they're squeaky wheel fests to rival a national
hamster convention.

Besides, if everyone waits...who's going to find the bugs? :-p
Me, I'm expecting my copy this Friday or the beginning of next week.
I'm not sure which system I'm installing it on, it's not going to be my
production system first thing; probably either my Pismo or my home
desktop on the spare HDD.

If you're a belts and suspenders kinda guy, a good conservative rule of
thumb is always wait for the 0.1 version of *anything*.

(sez the guy who switched to Mozilla as his primary web browser way
back at version 0.6...lots of arrow scars from that progression to
Firefox 1.03 today)

But there's a lot to like about Tiger. I'm not going to wait very
long...there's one piece of sftware I use that I KNOW is affected, and
they're supposed to get the update out this week.

Re: Doesn't anyone wait anymore?!

2005-05-04 Thread William Wiseman
Actually, this has been the most trouble-free upgrade I've done. It
is now loaded on my iBook G4/800, which I did first and tested for
stability, as well as an eMac and my mini. All were done as archive
install, with settings imported, and I had no install problems and
only one other problem. It seems that after installing Tiger, the old
Targus USB hub that was attached to the mini caused the system to
crash several times. Removed the hub and no problems since. I have
seen some people complaining about network and printer problems but I
have had none.

My wife has been wanting Spotlight since it was announced, so I had
to get Tiger on her eMac to shut her up. :-)

Wait? Never!
I installed Tiger last night. I waited a few days to see if my monitor
would explode if I didn't.

Installation went smoothly, a lot quicker than I expected. Optimization
was extremely fast. So far no problems. Tiger seems smoother, just like
Panther felt smoother than Jaguar. I'm going to love Automator.

Re: Tiger on Pismo and Lombards

Tiger runs fine on a Lombard. Installing it is the trick, and requires
a new world Mac. You can install it on an external disk connected to
Mac with built-in firewire, or install it on Mac with built-in firewire
and swap the drive into the Lombard.

But after putting the drive into the Lombard, there is no hack
required. See this hint on macosxhints.com for more info.

Re: ADSL - 255.255.0.0 - going crazy

2005-05-04 Thread Larry le Mac
From: Bruce Johnson [EMAIL PROTECTED]

One thought, and I forget the beginnings of this thread...have you swapped
out the cables, and tried different ports on the router? I've had flaky
ethernet cables that have really tried my patience by making it look like
everything else is at fault...
Nah, I think cables and all are good, and the router has been
behaving so far which is good news.
The DI-604 has som features that seem useful if I can just get
my head round IP stuff, never studied it or even gave it 2 seconds...
Thanks Bruce and laurent for your help.

Some people choose to wait, some don't.I have been using Macs for
more than 15 years now and I have to say that this was by far the
smoothest OS upgrade process I have ever had. However, I certainly
understand what you are saying - historically, there have been some
problems with new OS software. BUT - they were ironed out and I
think the majority of people have been pretty content with the
upgrades overall in the past 2-3 years.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but it seems that people these days just

Of course, it is always a choice as to whether you buy new, major
upgrade software within the first few days of release but sometimes
you have to take calculated risks and this was one that I felt worth
taking.

There were so many cool new features in Tiger that I personally did
not want to wait. The time savings and integration between programs
seemed very impressive from what I had read and they have definitely
proven to be so in the last few days that I have had Tiger
installed. It seems to be a fantastic upgrade thus far !

MCE's iBook SuperDrive upgrade

2005-05-04 Thread Simon Tang
Hi all,
A friend of mine is thinking about springing for a superdrive
upgrade from MCE for her G3 iBook. Has anyone out there had any
experience with this upgrade (good or bad)? I think they are offering
the upgrade for $199 + $99 installation (they have a $49 install
option, but you will have to pay to ship it to them).

Thanks for everyone's 2 cents.

2005-05-04 Thread Nima
Well... On the date of the release of Tiger, at 6:00 p.m. I found
myself in line waiting for the Apple Store to re-open. They opened up
the store's door and about 200 or so of us faithfuls were in line and
under a general applause we entered the Store. The Apple personnel
were distributing some sort of scratch and win game... I won an iTune!

Upon entry, I proceeded to go straight to the counter and purchased
my fresh copy of Tiger. I came home soon thereafter, and installed on
my TiG4, 15, 1Ghz. I figured, bugs or no bugs, I will deal with it.
I did the same when 10 came out. Then the same when 10.2 came out.
The same with 10.3. Never had any issues (major ones) to deal with.

Some of us are crazy that way.

I upgraded my 12 G4 iBook from a combo to dual layer superdrive and
replaced the hard disk with a 100 GB at the same time. I used one of

out that afternoon, and both have worked flawlessly ever since.

All dual-USB and later iBooks can playback DVDs if equipped with a

iBook with then be able to playback DVDs.

You up to the swap?, it's not for the faint-of-heart. Those iBooks are

Slight annoying problem with iChat in Tiger?

Since upgrading to Tiger, I did notice a change in the way iChat works.
Basically, if the main application is not opened, you don't get any audio

menu bar under Panther.

Anyone else?
