sick PB G4/400

2005-05-13 Thread Kevin Thomas
Hope someone can help.here's what i have going on...
I have a PB G4/400 that all of a sudden last week started getting
regular kernal panics (the black box with you need to restart your
computer). I tried to pinpoint when they were happening but there was
no consistency. Sometimes it would hang at the blue screen and the
little pinwheel would just spin then the black box would show, other
times I could get to the startup screens and other times all the way to
the desktop and start to use it then it would freeze/panic.

Luckily, I was able to finish a backupso I did research and
concluded the hard drive was the problemso I wiped the drive and
wrote all new zero's with Disk Utilitythat went ok, then during a
fresh install it just decided to bail out of the install. hmm...so I
used DiskWarrior to see if anything was wrong, nothingran it again
and during DiskWarrior running it bailed out and restarted on it's own
then kernal panic. ughso I tried the reinstall again and it for
some reason let me go thru everythinginstalled 10.3...everything
going finedecided to install all the updates and after it finished
10.3.9 back came the kernal panicfirst when it got to the desktop
and then I restarted and it froze at the blue screen with the pinwheel
spinning.

Talked to a local tech and he believed the hard drive was toast.so
I bought a new Toshiba from OWCinstalled it and no sooner do I
start the install the computer freezesbut not a kernal panic (black
box) just the mouse froze on the screenso I restartedit allowed
me to start the install but then after checking the disc and starting
the install of 10.3, it bailed out, went to the blue screen with the
pinwheel spinning and that's where it sits right now.

So I'm figuring it's not the actual hard drive but something much
worse. any ideas? Is it time to cut my losses on this baby? It's
already had the logic board replaced a year ago but it's been flawless
since then.

Wireless on Pismo

2005-05-13 Thread Ian Moffatt
Finally got a Wireless card that works!!

Thought I had one with a Netgear but nothing - not even the driver
that Orange have developed

Anyway, I got a Belkin card from eBay following info from the list re
drivers etc. - Thanks all

Of course all the manuals for card and router (Belkin 54g and BT
Voyager 2110) are windows based so with a bit of fiddling and a lot of
trial and error I have it up and running. Not had much use out of it
yet as I only got it sorted last night and I'm away for the weekend
now and won't have time to try it further. But last night I was able
to email from my bed without a load of cables running all over the
place and this morning I checked my eBay and email from the kitchen
whilst I made breakfast.

Why didn't I go wireless before?

Now after looking at the excellent page on WiFiing older PB's I'm
after a card for my PB 1400 - but that's for another list ;-)

Cheers all

No.

Upgrades are always trouble, even if you could fix this one issue, other

For those that wish to know I can confirm that the current version of
the Linksys wpc54gs card works fine with the Airport software, no
additional drivers required. Version 1 of wpc54g card also works fine
but the Version 2 card does not as it does not have the Broadcom chipset
in it. The advantage of this card over all the others is WPA support,
the IOExpert and Orange drivers currently only support WEP

Pretty much. There is a matrix chart in the take-apart manual that
tells which processors can be used with which logic boards. Rather
than specify WS I vs WS II the types are differentiated by
serial number code.

I think you are right. You might want to check with www.everymac.com for the
exact specs or in the specs section of the support area on the Apple web
site.

-Laurent.

There is one configuration (12.1 TFT, 1 Oct 1998) that has 2MB SGRAM video
and uses the ATI Rage LT PRO.

You really need to use the ID Code (part of the last 5 or last 3
characters
of the serial number) of the logic board to be sure. You can see the
serial
number just inside the PC card slot.

 Cheers all

Pretty much. There is a matrix chart in the take-apart manual that
tells which processors can be used with which logic boards. Rather
than specify WS I vs WS II the types are differentiated by
serial number code.
Ken
So, what happens if you use a WS1 CPU on a WS2 ? I have an odd
problem. I am using a WS 1 CPU (either a cahceless 233 or a 83/250)
on what I think is a WS2 motherboard. THe mcahine boot chimes, and I
hear some disk activity, but I never get any video, internally or
external monitor.

Also, another odd thing: When I plug the power in, the fan ramps up
for 4 seconds or so, and the green light blinks. Then, nothing.
Anyone else see this ?

As far as I can tell, all the 802.11b AirPort Base Stations (non-Extreme)
had a modem in them. I think that the first generation (Graphite) could
share the modem connection only with computers connecting wirelessly to it
while the second generation (Snow) could also share it over a wired Ethernet
network since it had an additional LAN Ethernet port. I could be wrong
because I've never configured mine to do that...

That was my guess. I cant get any video out from the WS2 board, but
it does clearly boot into the finder, just no video.

I wonder why the WS1 boards dont work with WS2 ? WS2 doesnt like 83

You would need one of the base stations that had a modem in it. The
current
Extreme one has a modem and if memory serves there was a version of
the
802.11b station that had a modem in it.
As far as I can tell, all the 802.11b AirPort Base Stations
(non-Extreme)
had a modem in them. I think that the first generation (Graphite) could
share the modem connection only with computers connecting wirelessly
to it
while the second generation (Snow) could also share it over a wired
Ethernet
network since it had an additional LAN Ethernet port. I could be wrong
because I've never configured mine to do that...

Nope, not true. I share wired and wireless every day on my graphite
with dialup. And I set up my niece's graphite to do the same. And
it's really not to bad. As long as the other users aren't downloading
files, it works fine. Now it's not near as fast as my DSL here at the
office, but we can set on our sofa with a laptop and multitask just
fine.

This isn't exactly what you're asking about, but I have the HP 2510
all-in-one (AIO) - it networks out of the boxed, wired or wireless.
It's GREAT to have one machine that any computer in our house can print
to without worrying whether the computer it's hooked to is awake
(because this one doesn't hook to any one computer), and I've NEVER had
problems printing to it. We got the duplexing attachment.

It does, however, occasionally disappear from view for scanning
purposes. Sometimes it just disappears from the view of the scanning
utility and just restarting the scan utility works. (I generally scan
from the HP icon in the dock, though I could acquire from GC if I
wanted to.) Sometimes turning the AIO off on works, or pulling the
plug. But sometimes nothing seems to get my PB find it on the network
- the printer utilities and the scanning utility can't find it, but I
can still print to it just fine, go figure! - and I just go ahead
reinstall the printer driver - there might be something less extreme,
but I haven't found anything yet reinstalling is faster than futzing
around.

But then, my Canon USB scanner before wasn't always recognized - the
only fully reliable scanner I've ever had was a 2nd-hand low-end
Microtek SCSI scanner I reluctantly retired when I replaced my
WallStreet. I've heard people complain about SCSI being flakey - never
for me!

All in all, I like having the all-in-one I like having it networked
so it can sit in its own little corner somewhere.

Re: How to connect WS II (OS 9.2.2) wirelessly to dial-up using

2005-05-13 Thread John Slavin
Yep, that's exactly what I'm saying. When you first set it up, you get
a warning saying that using it to bridge between wireless and wired and
using it for DHCP may cause problems, but I've never had it cause any
problems. One thing you do have to do though if you're using X on the
wired machines, is that you need to get ABS Modem Utility:

http://www.catsincharge.com/programs/
in order to control the modem from the wired machines. The beta
release supports X. But I've been using it for years with no problem.
Also, it won't show in versiontracker (I guess since it's beta) under X
software.

Can anyone tell me if I'm running OS 10.3.4 (also 9.2.1)

My question is, I hooked up the iprint part

But what else do I need to do or have?
In OS X, I clicked on the SYS folder/printer folder
the laserwriter is listed in the PPD folder.
But in the Pref's panes/Print fax
when I click on add a printer, it does Not See
my printer! To even be able to pick it!
Someone Please help!
What do I need to do?

Make sure you have AppleTalk selected on the Ethernet interface in

Make sure you are searching AppleTalk in Printer Setup.

Van
I've been pretty pleased with the Brother MFC420CN.
It's a very compact inkjet printer, flatbed scanner and fax with a built
in ethernet interface and a built in card reader that I can use from my
560x.
I've got it plugged into my wireless router so my wife and daughter can
print form anywhere. My desktop (that dare not speak it's name) is
connected by ethernet. The solid state 560x doesn't have enough disk
space to install the full network package so I'm using a much trimmer
USB only driver that offers most of the functions of the network driver
in a fraction of the disk space.
The paper tray only holds 100 pages or so so it's not a high production
machine but for a small office like mine it fits very well.
