Pismo - Modem.....
Hello evrybody, Usually I'm using my pismo within a WiFi-DSL environment, so I haven't really used the internal modem for ages. But when I went on holiday up in the mountains, I had to use dial-in (what a difference! Actually waiting for webpages *g*), but I noticed, the connection was really slow Even as a dial-in I'm using Panther, and the modems sometimes gets recognized as a 33.6kbit modem, sometimes as a v.90-56k (I really can't say when which version is used)... This really seems a little bit strange to me (why shouldn't Apple's OS recognize Apple's very own modem?)... And then, isn't there any way of getting a Firmware-update for the v.90-modem to as v.92? I hope this will boost the performance the next time I'm up in the mountains? Any help needed. Thomas -- G-Books is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... Re: Pismo - Modem.....
Dial up performance it dependent on the phone line you are using, not the modem, as I always get 48.5 at home and only 28.6 at a friends house just down the street from me using the same laptop. Cleaning PowerBook's innards?
Just scored an entire bottom case for a Wallstreet, for a paint mod project. It's intact and in good shape, but looks like it's been sitting on a shelf in a garage or basement for quite a while. Wiping down the outside was easy enough, but there are a few grimy areas on the inside (particularly in the case bottom) that need a real cleaning. Suggestions as to the best cleaning materials to use? Anyone developed a tried and true process for this kind of cleanup? TIA, Gene, a.k.a. Help w/ AOL, Jaguar, Wallstreet
Is anyone out here still using AOL in OS X? My sister is, and I promised I'd help her work out some problems. Unfortunately, I can't figure it out. The issue is that AOL won't talk to the Wallstreet's modem. I installed it on my Pismo (10.3.9), and that's what I'm using to connect right now. On the Wallstreet (running 10.2 Jaguar, which update I'm not entirely sure), AOL's idiot setup always finds the right modem description (Apple Internal 56k v.90), but it seems to want to select the printer/modem port for the connection. When using so-called expert setup, I pick the right modem description and the internal modem for the port. Either way, when AOL tries to dial, it fails with results like modem not accepting our commands or modem cannot find a carrier signal. I've verified that AOL Dialup is the mode selected in the Network preference pane, and nothing seems wrong there. The modem works fine in OS 9/AOL 5, so there's no hardware or phone line issues. Does anyone have any ideas? FYI, I'm in digest mode since I've been stuck with AOL dialup for a couple of days. Re: Cleaning PowerBook's innards?
I've cleaned several Mac case parts by running them through the dishwasher. Plastic only of course and only on the top rack or air dry. Took a leap of faith the first time I tried it but all worked out well. I have never done any PowerBook parts however, but I can't imagine there is anything so special about their plastic that you couldn't do the same. Then again, I've never washed anything I couldn't afford to lose. That's my story and I'm sticking to it. For the PS I took the case off, grabbed it by the dangling cables and dunked it repeatedly into a bucket of soapy water, then the tight spots were brushed out. Then it was rinsed repeatedly in clean water, once with DI water, and hung up in the sun to dry. When I put it all back together, the thing fired right up. iBook Battery Exchange
Hi all, Just have to say that this is super efficient... I haven't experienced anything quite like it before... Couldn't be more happy... I logged into the US Apple web page Friday evening, and filled in the form. While at work this morning, my call phone rang, and it was UPS calling to check where I was, wondering where to deliver the battery (! The norm is more often that they only call if they don't succeed in delivering at your address). When I said I was at work, they instantly offered to come there instead of to my home. When we had a break in our meeting a little while later, our receptionist came to me with the battery. Since I filled in the form Friday evening, it actually took only around 25 hours from Apple in the Netherlands could get the message from the US (Monday morning), until the battery was delivered in Norway. I must say, I am mighty impressed. They even shipped UPS Express. The whole thing was really well done. Easy for anybody to figure out what to do. Well written instructions, the most important ones even in Norwegian on a page of it's own, laying on top of everything. The rest of it was in a little booklet, including phone numbers for where to call to get them to come get the box for returning the old battery. They went a little overboard with their Proforma Invoice though (for customs). The papers said 3 was included, and to sign them and put them inside the pouch on top of the box. The pouch held no less than 5 invoices, and inside the box I found 5 more... That ought to be enough... ;-) When I set in the new battery a while ago, I soon felt the difference. It really doesn't get anywhere near as hot as the other one. This whole thing was sure a lesson learned, about following your instincts... One of the first things I noticed with this iBook, was that the battery for really hot, and it didn't make sense that it should be uncomfortable to touch regularly (I even started putting the laptop on the chair armrest instead of having it on my lap, to cool it down). I should have called Apple then... I bet many thought just as me, until things started happening which caused some to contact Apple to report incidents (fires?)... Real problems could obviously have been avoided if people like me, who actually did react that something wasn't right, had contacted them (in my case, 5 months ago)... I'm so happy to finally have my iBook back, with the backlight working as it should! I sure hope the problem won't return again this time too (Knock on wood!)... If it should happen though, I will have a serious talk with Apple!!! Aase :) -- G-Books is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... You can get any where from 2.4kbit to 48kbit connection on a v.90 or v.92 modem. It's all in the lines and modem pools on the other end.
