Just turning on one of the 2 built-in restrictions will keep 99.999%
of people out of your network. The 0.001% that want in and want to
bother, can get in no matter what.

While I have been trying not to use the wireless router (given
the situation with my neighbour that I mentioned earlier today), I
really need to have access to it here and there as I have a lot of
work to get done and cannot easily do it at my computer desk.

I was thinking I could perhaps create another network name and WPA
and perhaps stay hidden from her brother.

Changing the name of our station will last all of 5 seconds or so
before someone looking will know. Even if you turn off SSID
broadcast (of the name of the network) sniffing software will still
be able to see that it is there, and what the name is, if someone
(you) is connected.

WPA is easier to crack than WEP, per the proof-of-concept articles I
just found googling for WPA crack. I didn't look for software for
cracking WPA but I'm sure it exists, I've read articles about
software for WEP decryption, there are several options.

Turn on WEP, turn on MAC address filter as I mentioned before,
whitelist the MAC ID of your laptop(s) and keep half an eye on your
logs. It is really unlikely they will hack in, and if they do, you
can either ban the MAC ID of anything that does connect, or call
someone about it, or both.

Their breaking in is really not likely to be an issue if you enable
the built-in security options, and if it is, you will see it going on
and can do something at that time.

There's a lot of media hype and not a lot of there there, if you
know what I mean.

Put MacStumbler or KisMac on your Mac laptop. Look around when you
are out and about, to get a feel for how this works, and what is
really available and what is not accessible even though you can see
it. Look at your own network with one of these softwares to make
sure the setting you think you have enabled, are enabled. A bit of
education and experience and you will worry less about your setup,
and be comfortable with the technology and be able to keep your LAN
useful to you yet sensibly protected.

cheap wireless cards

Continuing our discussion on cheap wireless cards, I see that CompUSA
is blowing out Linksys WPC11 wireless cards (store ID 279434) for $5
after rebates. Linksys has no mac driver listed, but I cant find any
information on the chipset. Does anyone know which chipset this card
uses ?

I think the bottom line is:

Whether or not you thinks laws are good or not, or protect people or
not, or are in favor of anarchy or not, laws do exist, usually for a
purpose.

If you feel it's ok to share YOUR wireless connection with someone
else, that's your choice.

If you feel it;s NOT ok to share said connection, that's your choice
and others should respect that.

Should they not accept it to the point of threats (and that's what
next-door-neighbor is doing) then the cops should be called.
Immediately.

I have a D-Link wireless router - there are options to change from
the WEP 128 bit encryption to WPA personal.Would doing this
create enough of a wall for most people trying to hack in ?

I think I'd be prefer MAC address filtering, as I understand it both
WEP and WPA require some CPU time for the encryption which might be
enough to slow down the connection to a slower computer.
MAC address filtering is done at the router and should have no effect
on connection speed.
This thread has got me motivated to figure out how to enable MAC
address filtering on my Linksys...

with JCL simply copy a working file (or card deck), changing the file names.
Someone who actually understands and generates unique JCL is regarded with
the mixed respect one gives to someone who memorizes the phone book. It is
reported that hackers at IBM itself sometimes sing Who's the breeder of the

That's as bad as JCL. As with COBOL, JCL is often used as an archetype of
ugliness even by those who haven't experienced it. See also IBM, fear and

You said:
Setting a password, turning off remote admin, and making
sure you check for firmware updates once in a while (you are current
at the moment for a v3 BEFSR41) are the important things for your
 setup, as I see it.

Password is a strong one, remote admin is indeed turned off and I do
check every once in awhile for firmware updates.

You also said:
You need to look under wireless/security and turn on MAC address
filtering and WEP to control these things on a wireless router.

I did not provide sufficient info on my setup. Here it is.

DSL modem connected to the wired Linksys router.

Linksys connected to my G5 iMac via ethernet cable AND connected to my
ancient Graphite Apple Base Station which in turns links our two laptops in
a small home network.

I checked out the ABS and found under the Access Control Tab's sub tab
AirPort ID, I have entered the AirPort ID number of each of my two iBooks.

Tell me...am I good to go, security-wise?

WEP will lock out 99.9%.

WPA is better (but pls remember to use a long key).

You could also set your router to only talk to specific MAC
addresses. That way your users have to be on a specifically
authorized computer AND know the WEP or WPA key.

I was thinking I could perhaps create another network name and WPA

Not worth the effort, IMO. Just secure what you have and let the

ROFLMAO. Rememberies... Long time ago in a state far away, I was
working at the computer center at college. One of the freshmen
programming classes used our batch machine. The professor gave them
a sample JCL block to put around their card decks, that started with:

//JOB the professor's name

At the bottom of the instructions, it said to replace her name with
theirs. But we all know that students can't read! uh oh.

Picture it... The night before the first assignment is due. The
student area of the computer center is *crowded* with kids hyped on
coffee and Jolt. The flood of decks is so big, the batch machine is
falling farther and farther behind. Turnaround is over an hour.

We take a rack of cards into the machine room and run them. An hour+
later, we come out with the cards and box or three of printout,
rip'n'sort 'em, then give the whole mess to a runner to take the 'em
up to the professor's office -- because every job had her name on it!
The students are staring at us - the panic growing on their faces ...

A. JCL. Gotta love it.

Battery Time Left

2006-01-15 Thread Daniel Colwell
For some reason I can no longer get info on how long my battery has
left in hours and minutes.

I can get the info in percentage, but if I ask for it to be shown as
time left, it says calculating... or is just a blank, depending on
which program I use to measure it. I have show battery status in the
menu bar checked in the Energy Saver Systems Preference. I also use
SlimBatteryMonitor. Both show the same percentage, but no longer the
time.

As best I remember this was working up till just a week or so ago.

I have a 400MHz Pismo, 40G, 768MB. I recently upgraded to Tiger and
then 10.4.3. Could have been the same time. Battery is fairly new. I
was getting about 4 hours or so last I remember seeing the time. Is
this a Tiger issue?

I tried running just on battery till it went to sleep (about 1-2 %),
then charging to full. Did this twice, still no joy so I tried reset-
nvram, reset-all. Still nothing but %.

Seems like its probably just something simple, but no luck with
Google or searching the Apple site.

Any Suggestions?

Thanks,

Dan-

Interchanging iBook G3 G4 keyboards

2006-01-15 Thread Ruffin Bailey
I'm afraid I've mostly lurked on this list for a while and I
apologize if the subject has been covered before, but just in case
it's helpful... I certainly didn't find anyone who seemed to have
done the deed when I Googled this up a few times over the last year.

Short answers:

* You *cannot* use iBook G4 keyboards on iBook G3s without putting an
extension on the ribbon, which, if you don't mind, we'll say is a
nontrivial exercise, to put it mildly.

* You *can* use G3 keyboards on G4 with a few caveats. One, you'll
have to fold the ribbon like a Z over on itself, which is not the
recommended way of using a ribbon cable. Two, you'll have a slight
bow in the keyboard that'll make it poke up just enough you'll likely
scrape the screen with your keyboard's keys.

I had a G4 keyboard go flakey on me (never liked it as much as the
iBook G3 keyboard, and it finally acted so wacky I either had to
clean it #shudder!# or use it as an excuse for this experiment) and,
after pulling another keyboard from a limping iBook G3, the things
looked similar enough I thought it was worth a shot. So far, so
good. The bent-over ribbon does concern me a bit, however.

The iBook G4 keyboard doesn't have a particularly nice feel, imo,
though the metal keyholders do seem a bit more robust. I've had
issues on my G4 kybd with the space bar not being so responsive and
with random keys repeating at the slightest pressure (particularly
h, fwiw). Taking a little out of a G3 keyboard's ribbon would seem
a nice way to get a good typing-feel into this very nice laptop. I'd
considered downgrading to an iBook G3 900 to get as much perf as I
could with the nicer keyboard, esp since Small Dog had told me that I
couldn't swap in a G3 kybd for the G4. Glad I found out differently,
so far. I'm not so sure they were wrong -- the keyboards *aren't*

Anyhow, there you go. Hope that helps someone at some point.

AirportID is just a cute JobsSpeak for MacID, apparently, per google,

have a listing but still turn the MAC ID restrictions on/off (or
whitelist or blacklist by MAC ID); so just make sure you really are

Re: security re: file sharing/networks

2006-01-15 Thread John Siple
Indeed. Aber's neighbor seems to think she's entitled to use the
connection. That's rude.

There might be other options though. I heard a friend mention that he
had some router setting that allowed him to not broadcast the SSID. I
wasn't too interested at the time so I didn't ask what brand of
router he was using. But this capability would be a clean solution to
the nosey neighbor and still allow Amber to use her own wireless
systems, which she ought to be able to do.

Masking the SSID might be the only way to solve the intrusion without
making everyone uncomfortable.

There are also some directional antenna setups that limit
transmission in one axis to amplify it in another. But why she should
have to spend money to solve this rudeness is beyond me.

Hard to live with a neighbor like that though.

I would not put up with crap like that, and would make it clear that
she and her brother understood that. Plus, it gives you a documented

New iLife 06

2006-01-15 Thread Amber R.

Good Afternoon everybody,

I received my copy of iLife 06 on Friday and have been checking it
out since then. I have to say that so far, the changes to iPhoto
are pretty interesting and useful.

- Faster initial loading of your photos
- Full screen editing
- Multi-photo comparisons
- Transparent date markers as you scroll through your iPhoto library
- Seamless integration with iWeb etc etc

iWeb itself is a pretty cool little application. I was able to set
up a basic website with all kinds of hyperlinks, photos etc in less
than 10 minutes. Very intuitive ! It does not look like a custom
job but is great for those just wanting to set up blogs, photos of
the kids for the grandparents etc etc.

I have not explored iDVD and iMovie too much yet and never really got
into Garage Band so didn't check that one out immediately.

Anyway, I just thought I would write a little preview for you should
you be considering buying iLife. If you have any questions, please
don't hesitate to ask.

Amber

Ibook G4 1GHz malfunctioning motherboard any value?

2006-01-15 Thread Laurent Daudelin
A few months ago, I did replace the motherboard in my daughter's iBook G4 at
1GHz. She had spilled water on the keyboard and it found its way to damage
the motherboard. Only the video was affected, though, the computer seemed to
be working fine except for the video.

So, that motherboard has been sitting on a shelf for a few months now,
collecting dust.

Anybody knows if this has any value that would justify putting it on eBay?

Thanks!

Re: security re: file sharing/networks

broadcast the SSID. I wasn't too interested at the time so I didn't

This can make WinXP clients drop a connection a little more often
(due to a bug in XP) (bad if you are a legitiamte user of the LAN)
but if someone looks, you can still see the station ID if the station
is in use. With the cloaking, the SSID is not in the broadcast
packet, but it is in the response packet, so anyone sniffing will
have access to it anyway (assuming a legit user connects sometime).

See any of many pages for details. http://www-128.ibm.com/
developerworks/wireless/library/wi-roam5.html for example.

Again, it's one of those things that only keeps mostly honest people
out, like all of wireless security.

Pink Hue on Pismo display

2006-01-15 Thread James Sanderson
I am wondering if anyone here can remind me what causes the above
symptom. It goes away after a few seconds and the colour is fine.
The pink colour returns after waking the comp from sleep. The colour
always goes away. Is this something to be very concerned about,
somewhat concerned about , not to worry about in the near future but...

TIA,

J Sanderson

If I recall correctly, its a failing backlight. It is fixable with
the correct replacement part.

My Pismo, w/ clean install of OS X.4, original apple
 batteries, and
the computer always says Calculating. too.

Stupid question/comment for you all...I had this
happen once with Panther...It seemed to correct itself
by running a combo of DiskWarrior and also simply
repairing permissions...Now running 10.4.4 pismo 400
igb ram...Never had that problem since..Original Apple
battery that came w/the Pismo.

Flickering Pismo screen

2006-01-15 Thread Mark Philip
Hi all, my trusty 400MHz Pismo is now flickering. Is there something
I can do about this? Is it a display ribbon cable issue? Thanks...

Best,
Mark.
