Wifi antenna

2006-01-26 Thread Howard Katz
I've got a situation where I'm trying to use the wifi connection in my
'book with a weak base station signal--too much brick and steel in the
way--I can get connected, but it's not stable.

Has anyone ever come up with a way of connecting some kind of external
antenna to the PB to boost signal connectivity? I've got the G4 AL
15 machine, and I don't even see a decent place to attach something
to a screw. It would have been nice if there had been a plug or port
on the side of the screen that could have done this!

I wasn't aware of those--thanks. Tho to be honest, at $40-50, I might
just put up with a weak signal--those are a bit pricy--the peecee at
work needed an external antenna, and we got a decent one for under
$10--granted, it's not being used on a book, but that's a major price
difference. :)

I wonder if I could adapt an external antenna with a clip of some sort
on the TNC connector end to work with the 'book..?

getting different reception sitting in the same spot but the
solution wasn't with the machine... I got a better external antenna for
my Linksys on the recommendation of a techie and that solved the
problem... something about the quality of the signal from better
quality hardware than what ships with the unit.

Re: Wifi antenna

2006-01-26 Thread Harry Corsover
What kind of base station or WAP do you have? If it has an external
antenna, you're in luck. There are hi-gain antennas avaiable,
sometimes featured at http://dealmac.com for about $10. There are
ominidirectional ones and directional. I tried an omnidirectional one
first, but since my WAP is at one end of a long house and downstairs,
and the place I often use my 15 AlBook is upstairs in a location
with some interferrence, that didn't work well enough.

I then got a Hawkings dirctional anteanna and that works much better
for me. I also bought an antenna extension cable so I could mount the
antenna in the optimal location, high up on a wall downstairs and
pointing slightly upward.

One thing that you can do, which I did, is get a second router, there
are some inexpensive ones that you might find on ebay or at one of
the usual places. You set up that router as an AP, access point, at
another location in your apartment. This will extend your signal. You
do have to connect it via ethernet cable to your router My apartment,
a duplex with 6 thick concrete floors and ceilings and cinderblock
walls, didn't interfere with my Belkin Pre N router until a next-door
neighbor installed the same router. I could not get a signal anymore
in certain parts of the house, but his came through strong enough for
me to accidentally lock on. He had no security and a slow cable
service. Fortunately I still had my older Belkin 54g. Creating an AP
on that solved the problem. I also got him to secure his network.

I just ordered a antenna for my Pismo for $9. from this place (plus

to airport cards and airport extreme cards by attaching to the card

plugging in the power lead - does it matter?

2006-01-26 Thread Brian Steere
I read that one should always plug in the power brick before connecting
power lead to the Book.
If I move it from one place to another, I am conscientiously unplugging it
and re plugging it in correct sequence rather than just carrying it with the
power lead and brick connected and then replugging the plug into the wall
while still connected.

I just want to check out if this is over paranoid behaviour or not?
I mean the manual suggests not to move the Powerbook while on but people do
- but carefully - right?

No other networks impinging as far as I can tell.

I drag all my laptops around powered up and never give any thought to
how I plug or unplug them either. One thing my T41 laptop does have that
the powerbook I own doesn't is drop protection for the hard drive so if
I ever did drop the powerbook while it was on I may loose data but
that's all backed up anyway. So it is paranoid but with a very real
touch of reality to suggest not carrying it around powered up. If its
asleep it should be really safe though.

I bet most folk just plug it any how - but then I read of System admins at

service. The logic is that plugging an energized connector into the
equipment =could= (=could=, mind you) cause a small arc sending a
voltage spike through the equipment. A small possibility, but not one
that I want to risk.

Now then... I've done it both ways and never had a problem, but when
I have choice, the AC is connected last.

Just my $.02 worth,

Amanda

The first time I encountered the Apple recommendation to power the
external AC adapter first before connecting to the Apple laptop was in
the Apple-supplied PowerBook certification training materials prior to
my Prometric certification exam. The topic was addressed in one of the
test questions, so I assumed it was an important issue.
The training materials suggested that the main problem was the onboard
power management unit (PMU) which might eventually get corrupted to
the point of no longer correctly managing the recharging of the main
battery (leading to a main battery that runs flat). Leaving the power
adapter connected, but removed from the wall socket, was supposed to
lead to PMU confusion as to whether it should keep attempting to charge
or not. Using the PMU reset procedure contained in the appropriate
service manual was supposed to fix the situation. The reset procedure
for all Apple laptops is now covered in Apple Support documents 14449
and 58416.
The suggestion about allowing the power adapter to settle down before
connecting also makes sense...

I have read with interest the exchanges regarding plugging a laptop's
AC adapter to the wall outlet first, then connecting it to the laptop.
I think I'm satisfied that this is the right way to go; now for the
next logical question:
What about when it's time to turn the laptop off or to begin using
battery power? Should you disconnect the AC from the laptop first and
then the outlet, or from the outlet first and then the laptop?

David Howe
For those still wanting to discuss the AC issue...the following
tutorial on what can go wrong will make you power up before you plug in
to the laptop: Introduction -- Switching-Mode Power Supply Design

Doesn't matter, either way is fine.

Yes, move it carefully.

DiskWarrior vs Quicktime

2006-01-26 Thread sandra ragan

found this on the same MacInTouch site;

Jan. 23, 2006

DiskWarrior Problem
Yaw Anokwa
It seems that Quicktime 7.0.4 crashes Diskwarrior 3.0.3 (Rev 39) at
the end of the rebuild directory command. Fortunately, the repair goes
through and Alsoft has stated that the crash will do no harm to your
data.
If you are getting this crash, your options are: - Downgrade to
Quicktime 7.0.3 via this link:
http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/
quicktime701reinstallerforquicktime704.html - Boot from the DiskWarrior
CD and run repairs from CD. - Rename DiskWarrior
3.0.3.app/Contents/Resources/Complete.aiff to Alert Complete.aiff (Not
recommended).

Hopefully, Apple/Alsoft can get this issue fixed properly.
