Re: new to this list

Hello Claire,
I think you will really enjoy the 15" PB with Superdrive. I bought my
new Al 15" PB at Christmas (with Superdrive) and overall, have been
very happy with it.

The superdrive is great - especially for burning family DVD's and
back ups. Way better than burning a stack of CD's when you need to
back up your HD !

I think I want to get the 15" powerbook with superdrive. It will be

keyboards. Will a wireless keyboard and mouse work well with a
powerbook, or should I plan to line in? Will wireless need any
additional stuff to work, such as cards or drivers?

Thanks,

Powerbook overheating badly

2004-06-10 Thread AKR
Hi,
Just wondering if anybody has had this problem with their PB. I have
a 6 month old 15" AL PB. Recently, I came home and found that the PB
was extremely hot to the touch. It had been in sleep mode.
When I lifted it up, it had actually left two burn/char marks in the
table as well as a white mark where the finish of the table was
damaged.

Re: New Powerbook Question/Applecare

2004-06-08 Thread AKR

- is AppleCare REALLY recommended? (yeah, I know it is, but it's
a really steep icing on top of the already hefty cake... I guess
I need some horror stories to convince me ;) )
I don't have it for my iBook or iMac. But I do have very nice repair
policies from the store I bought them from, much cheaper than
AppleCare, and for more years. So far I have used the repair service
twice and been very happy with it. If you buy from a very reputable
dealer with a good return/repair policy, AppleCare is not needed.
YMMV!!
I would not trust store repair policies or extended warranties if my
life depended on them - even with the more reputable stores. They
often have clauses/small print that excludes coverage of numerous
repairs and are often a hassle to deal with. In my experience with
Applecare, my computers were fixed very quickly. In addition, when I
had bad USB port on my iMac's keyboard, they sent another one to me
via FedEx and I got it the next day.
Applecare also offers 3 years of phone support and extended coverage
and can be a good selling point if you sell your computer within the 3
year period.

I guess it boils down to personal preference. I just have had good
experiences with Applecare and not so good experiences with store
warranties.

Does it show the serial number for you when you go to "About this Mac"

Re: advice on laptop purchase

2004-04-25 Thread AKR
Hi Kate,
I would definitely go with the Powerbook if I was you. I was
contemplating almost the exact same options a few months ago but in the
end, the Powerbook won out and I have never regretted buying it since.
I got a 15" Al PB with the backlit keyboard, 80 Gig hard drive and
Superdrive. I did not add any RAM, although I may down the road. I
think you would appreciate the extra processor drive for iMovie and
iDVD, although it is not absolutely essential.

The DVD burner has been a great asset. Not only can I assist a local
film production company with their film clips but I can also burn back
up data DVD's, create DVD's for friends, and watch movies. For iMovie
and iDVD it is great. I also have Final Cut Express.

The iBook is a great value but I have to say that I think you will
find the Powerbook a much better investment over the long run.

Good luck with your decision,
Amber

Any advice would be appreciated!

iphoto 4 way out of whack

2004-04-02 Thread AKR
I am having some strange problems with iPhoto. I just recently
installed iLife. It seemed pretty good initially but now it is
dropping my camera imports in the middle and not only that but several
of the pictures in each batch of imports from my digital camera are cut
in half...so half the image is there, the other half is brown ??

Not only that but I keep getting huge lists of images that it found
some fault with.

I thought it might be a problem with the CF card so I used image
capture and tried again. All those photos came out fine with no errors
whatsoever.

Any suggestions ? Anybody else encounter this with iPhoto 4 ?

Re: Canon scanner compatibility

2004-04-02 Thread AKR
Hi,

I have a Canon LiDE 30 that I use with Panther (currently 10.3.3) on
my 15" Al PB. Works great. I like the size and portability, since I
carry it around in my laptop bag with the PB. It's also bus-powered,
so no need to drag along a separate power adapter. This model is not
USB 2.0, but I believe that they have a model (LiDE 80?) that is. It's
speedy enough for my needs, though (I typically scan at 150-300 dpi,
depending on what I'm doing).
That's the main reason I was considering the LiDE scanners. They are
so thin and light, they would fit easily in my laptop bag with my 15"
AL PB.

I had read that they are pretty slow on high res scans but I guess just
for scanning stuff for Photoshop Digital illustrations, that wouldn't
be too much of a concern.

The boxes for the LiDE 20 and 30 said that they only work in classic
mode. Is that correct ? That is my only concern. Thanks for your
reply.

Re: laptop comparison?/photoshop

2004-03-26 Thread AKR
For day-to-day email, web surfing, word processing and even most
games, you won't notice a difference. Even Diablo II runs as well on
the iBook as it did on the Powerbook and almost as well as on my
1.2gHz G4 Cube.
The iBooks, as I stated in my previous note, are a great value for
those just needing a computer for e-mailing, web surfing and word
processing.

I chose the 15" PB as I am using Photoshop on a daily basis, in
addition to editing large amounts of video and burning DVD's.

The iBooks do not have the Superdrive option either so that was another
draw to the PB.
Again, I think it all boils down to what you plan to use the laptop for.
Even if you don't plan to burn video to DVD, it's great to be able to
back up large amounts of photos and other data to DVD's instead of an
endless number of CD's.

Re: Timing my first Mac purchase

2004-03-13 Thread AKR
I am not sure if you are going to be successful in timing this purchase
that closely. It is a guessing game and the time you spend waiting
could be time you could have spent on your new PB. Also, keep in mind
that even if the G5's do come out this year, there are bound to be
glitches with the Rev A batch just as there were with the white spots
and latches on the first round of the 15" AL PB's.

I bought my 15" Al PB at Christmas and am absolutely thrilled with it.
I knew full well that the G5 PB's would be out at some point in the
future but was not prepared to wait. I needed and *wanted* a portable
system and of course it had to be a Mac. I barely use my 500 mhz iMac
now because the PB has become my primary computer.

Will I be envious when the new G5 PB's come out - you bet but I won't
regret my purchase for a second. I will have had full use of it for
the entire time I would have waited and got it for a great price.

I'd say go and buy the 15" and start enjoying it now.

importing/exporting film footage

2004-03-03 Thread AKR
Okay - the other night, I managed to copy some film footage from a VHS
tape, through a dv recorder/player into my Powerbook. I was not able
to import it into Final Cut Express for some reason so had to use
iMovie as we were in a rush to get this done.

However, I don't like the destructive editing features of iMovie and
would like to export the footage into Final Cut Express but have been
unable to do this so far as FCE is not able to see the file anywhere on
the hard drive.

Could somebody please suggest how this is done ?

Thanks,

Amber

Re: CD disk image

2004-03-03 Thread AKR
That wasn't your original question was it ?
You asked how to make a disk image that will show up like a commercial
CD - you didn't ask about making a bootable OS X CD.

Tom,

What do you mean by "will show up like commercial
CD's do"? Like with a
custom icon?

Do not assume anything You better be sure and call Apple Care and
have them send you a letter saying you will have coverage even in
Korea or if you travel to Korea. If you do not, you may have provided
them a wiggle hole out of the repairs.
I have stated twice (in two different messages) that he *SHOULD* call
Applecare !
I did not suggest that he assume anything. Your idea of the letter is
good though.

Re: AppleCare Question

2004-02-29 Thread AKR
With desktops, well, there it's a toss-up. In my experience (non
Powerbook) Macs either break right away (within the 1 year warrantee),
or don't do so for years and years, and things that do break are
reasonably cheap to replace (primarily HDD's and optical drives).
This is not completely correct. The repairs can be very expensive. I
bought Applecare on both of my iMacs. Both required costly repairs
just shortly after the end of the standard 1 year warranty. In fact,
on the first one - I bought Applecare just days before the end of the
1st year. 2 weeks later, smoke started pouring out the back of the
computer and it required several hundred dollars worth of repairs and
parts, not to mention labour. The Applecare cost me $149.00 CDN. The
repairs/labour were $980.00.

If you want peace of mind, and aren't handy fixing things yourself,
AppleCare is more valuable.

As for getting Applecare on your PB overseas, it may be problematic,
but the PB was purchased here it should be covered.
It could be problematic in a more remote area but Korea - I'm pretty
sure he would have access to Applecare warranty service there. Still,
asking is the best way to find out.

I am not sure from your e-mail where you are currently residing but you
should call Applecare in the country you are in now and they will be
able to give you accurate information.

Re: AppleCare Question

2004-02-29 Thread AKR
The Applecare service is definitely well worth the money and one
additional benefit that I forgot to mention in my initial response was
that it can be a great selling point when you are attempting to sell
your used Mac 2 years from now. If you still have 6-12 months (or
more) of Applecare left, it can be transferred to the new owner so they
have more peace of mind should they end up with a problem two days
after they get it home.

I sold my last iMac with 6 months of Applecare remaining and got a very
good price on it.
