Lexmark 6170 all-in-one on Mac
Last year, after reading a couple reviews in Mac publications and Lexmark's promo literature, I got Such A Deal from BJ's that I bought a Lexmark 6170 printer/fax/copier/scanner/Bass-O-Matic... only to find when I got the pig home that there were no Mac drivers -- OS X or otherwise -- and both Lexmark tech support and several DLs told me there weren't any such drivers, and most likely never would be. I tried GIMP Print, with no success, the only thing remotely related to the problem I found was this: LOCAL TALK INTEGRATED NETWORK OPTION FOR 4039 OPT Price: $250.99 Mfr 1325494 This is an internal network adapter that adds AppleTalk interface capability for Lexmark printers. Which is LOT of money to have to run a printer in Classic mode. Anyone else have this problem? Better yet, has anyone found a solution? Re: Here's a fairly dumb question...
H... don't know how they got there, but I have FAXstf for OS 9.x AND FAXstf X in my Applications folder. Another mystery... Bart On Apr 18, 2005, at 8:47 AM, KxUx wrote: Opps. Did I imply that FAXstf is in the system? That is not the case. Apple delivers fax functionality in the system, but it is quite bare bone - you can send and receive faxes. When receiving, the faxes can be directed to a printer automatically or send to e-mail address. That is about it - check the System Preferences -- Print Fax for details of what can be set. You will find the number of rings in there. One warning though - when you send the fax make sure to save a copy as their fax does not do it for you. Also there is no confirmation that the fax was sent correctly - I guess the implied confirmation is that the fax goes away from the fax queue - which means that it was sent correctly. -- G-Books is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... Re: Here's a fairly dumb question...
So, as I just found out after about a year-and-a-half, did mine! Doh! Thanks for the heads-up. Has anyone used FAXstf X in a one-line situation? What I'm looking for specifically is this: If the phone rings, and FAXstf picks it up after x rings and there's no modem tone, will it automatically hand the call back to my answering machine, which is part of my [EMAIL PROTECTED] cordles phone? Re: replacing optical drive in G4 iBook?
Avail yourself of the best deal in the world for replacing SuperDrives (and lots of other stuff: HDs, LCDs, etc.). Go to PowerBookResQ (part of MacResQ): http://www.powerbookresq.com/ and check out this, and many other, deals: PowerBookResQ 8x Dual-Layer SuperDrive 24 Hour Nationwide Full Service Upgrade for All G4 PowerBooks and G4 iBooks $289.00 When my SuperDrive went Tango Uniform, I called everyone from Apple's friendly tech-support (hello, Bangalore!), to our local friendly AppleStore (replace a WHAT, dewd?), to my friendly local Apple VAR (is that made by Macintosh? I think I've got some info buried here somewhere...). Apple Tech HQ in Bangalore quoted me $800.00 WITHOUT the drive. The saggers at the AppleStore quoted me $800.00 WITH the drive, and the Apple VAR is still digging through a midden of Sinclair ZX-80s, 286s, and disco lights. Somebody hipped me to PowerBookResQ (and NO, I'm not an employee, investor, creditor, or groupie -- well *maybe* a groupie -- for MacResQ), and I called them up. You can just do it online, but I had questions... MANY questions. They told me it was a good idea to back up any critical data, just in case, and I did. The very next day FedUp delivered an extremely sturdy pizza box with lots of customizable foam cutouts in it. I asked Mr. FedUp to tally a mo, popped my PBG4 in and off he went (did I mention that this is all pre-paid shipping, included in the price?). The next day I suffered through a whole day in the shop without iTunes or the net, but the next morning the pizza box came back with my PBG4, brand new Matsushita SuperDrive, and not a single piece of data missing. This was last September, so I wasn't able to take advantage of the dual-layer SD they're offering now, and it was actually a little more expensive -- $320 or thereabouts -- back then. Not a single hiccup since, and I (and YOU) get to keep the box, which is unbelievably robust. Considering the price of an Apple-firmware Dual Layer SuperDrive, this is the no-brainer of the century. Here's a fairly dumb question...
I have a PBG4 17 Aluminum, OS X 10.3.8. At my shop, I'm connected to the web by DSL (at home, by Airport to Cable Modem). Can I connect a phone line to the phone jack on the back of the PB, and send and receive e-faxes? I want to get rid of my huge, miserable, and non-Mac-compliant (though they said it was when I bought it) Lexmark 6170 All-In-One. All I want to do is be able to send and receive faxes electronically, as I used to be able to do on my Venerable UMAX S900, using FAXstf or something similar. Can I run both DSL and fax concurrently? When I had DSL installed, I had to hang a noise filter off EVERY device in the POTL chain -- assuming I can do the e-fax thang, should I hang *another filter at the phone port on my PB? Is there a good fax app someone can recommend that's compatible with OS X 10.3.8? Thanks in advance Bart -- G-Books is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... Re: Here's a fairly dumb question...
Thanks for the info -- I didn't even know Apple bundled FAXstf with OS X, and I've been using OS X since first release... guess you gotta look for these things! Have any problems *receiving* faxes? My problem is my shop has ONE phone line, but I think I can remember how to set the answer on x rings, detect fax tone -- used it for years in OS 7.x.x. through 9.2.2. Thanks again! Bart Brown On Apr 17, 2005, at 10:15 PM, KxUx wrote: Hi Bart, Sometimes I need to send faxes from my home and I have similar setup. DSL + Linksys WiFi Router. I just connect phone line to the back of my PowerBook (actually it is side in my case) and send fax. The line has the noise filter hanging from the wall but not from the PowerBook side. All works well when I need it. In fact what I do (since I send only few faxes) is that I unplug the cable from phone and connect to Powerbook for few minutes that I need to send the fax. I use the OS X built-in fax for my faxing needs. It is more than sufficient. -- G-Books is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... Dead drive -- thanks for the helpful response
For those who responded by asking what are you talking about, to my request for help concerning my defunct SuperDrive, may I humbly suggest that if you'd read my original post, instead of the snippets people quoted, you might have divined that I was talking about the SuperDrive in my PowerBook G4 1GHz, a Matshita UJ-815 D0CB. For those who responded about what a great deal AppleCare seems now that the horse is out of the barn door, allow me to say that in 13 years of working with and on Macintosh products exclusively, I've never had a mechanical failure, except for a floppy drive that failed after five years. I hardly expected a Matsushita product to fail so spectacularly after 15 months of ownership and exceptional TLC. Finally, thank you so much for your invaluable assistance. Re: Designated Drivel on Dead Drives
Clark and Mikael, you fellows have really hurt my feelings. I believe you owe me a big apology and a sloppy wet kiss. Your public and private excoriation will almost certainly cost me the G-Spot Popularity Contest. I know you're both among the the respectable number of knowledgeable people (or was that the knowledgeable number of respectable people?) in this heavenly choir, because you *say* you are. After all, one of you is a designated driver on the information superhighway. I mean, just to have been clever enough to have thought that one up shows a razor-sharp wit and keen intelligence. If I go to a forum, supposedly composed of knowledgeable people who may have some insight on the problem I'm trying to solve, I expect either no replies, or honest attempts to help. What I don't expect , and don't accept, is a few self-exalted hall monitors harassing me as if I'd farted in their own personal bathtub. Get a grip? Pinhead? Sorry, THAT dog don't hunt. I came here to get informatiion; instead I got a couple loads of verbal diarrhea. Sorry, I don't have a lame sig or bogus credentials, or a really dope domain like punkass. I feel so unworthy... [no subject]
I hope someone can help me. I have a just-over-one-year-old (of course) 17 G4 PowerBook with a SuperDrive. After a year of working flawlessly, reading and burning all brands of CD and DVD, yesterday I went to put in a blank CD to backup some data with Toast, and got an unhappy surprise: the disk went in fine, but then the drive clunked twice, and spat the disk out. I tried several other disks -- commercial, self-burned, DVD -- same trick every time: full pull-in insert, two big clunks and disk eject. I reset PRAM, NVRAM, and the PMU, did the Force Quit, Force Shutdown, Control-Command-Power start -- all the Apple remedies. I'm currently trying to find my original Hardware Diagnostic disks, but if the drive won't accept any other disks, I'm justifiably concerned that it won't accept the diagnostic disks either. Apple support quoted me a replacement drive price of around $1000 (minus labor), and that' doesn't make me too happy. Any suggestions/previous experience/mantras, etc.? Any help greatly appreciated.
