Clarification?

2005-10-11 Thread Dylan Moore
Hey bruce, quick question- I'm probably misunderstanding you, but i'm
pretty sure the quicksilver takes an internal zip. Well, let me put
it this way- I have a quicksilver, and it had the option to take an
internal zip- and since I opted for it, I have the aforementioned
internal zip drive. Or am i missing something?

cheers
-dylan

Also, don't forget, the Apple store is geared mainly to supporting
new sales and systems. How many years has it been since Apple shipped
a G4 tower that could accept an internal Zip (don't forget, neither
the Quicksilver or the MDD models could take an internal Zip. The
last one that could was the Digital Audio)

Re: squeaky space bar

2005-07-05 Thread Dylan Moore

Hey brian,
	I have a 12 G4 ibook that had a semi-functional spacebar when i got
it, so I called up apple and they mailed me out a brand new one and
instructions on how to install it- on an ibook. Its a user installable
part on an ibook, and I think thats the case on a powerbook though I
could be wrong.

hope that helps.

dead hd in freezer?

2005-02-09 Thread Dylan Moore
Try putting the dying hard drive into a zip-lock bag, sealing it and
storing
it in your freezer over night. Tomorrow remove it let it warm up. You
should get an hour or more out of it so you can transfer the files to
your
new already installed drive.

John
really? thats the most bizarre fix i've ever come across, if you're
being serious.
what's the basic explanation for that one? *intrrigued*
I mean i understand the #1 reason for HD failure is heat, but
intuitively i would think it would wreak havoc with the parts to put it
in the freezer. But if this is really a fix, i could see the ziplock
bag being necessary- no one wants freezer burned data! ( =

Re: Getting satisfaction from Apple

2005-02-03 Thread Dylan Moore
Amen,
I've had apple replace so much stuff while being nice about it that
it's really sold me on the company. The list includes three ipods, out
of warranty, parts in a G3 bronze that wasn't originally mine, and was
a year out of warranty(didn't even have apple care!) and the entire
logic board out of my G4 desktop a month after apple care was up
because of some flaky processor errors. I know not everyone can have a
good experience, and I know i've certainly had my fair share of karma
with getting hardware repairs, so thats why i'm on this list, in case
someone comes along with a problem I can help out with ( =

Wether you get applecare or not isn't my choice- but i've never been
disappointed by getting it.
Thanks all

ibook help- no idea why its not working!

2005-01-30 Thread Dylan Moore
Hey all, got more details from my friend clint on his ibook- I really
need all the feedback i can get from you guys so we can get his ibook
back together!!

to dylan
I don't know what is happening. I tried the first thing you said and
that
didn't work but it sort of did. the computer started up and there
were all
kinds of weird colors and patterns. sort of medieval rug type of
colors.

then I tried the last one. my book is the large size 2 usb model 14.1
from
late 2002, so to reset the p-ram power man you have to press shit,
control,
options, and power together. wait 5 seconds. then start up. that
didn't work
at all.

the funny thing is. sometimes the grey 10.3 screen comes on when I try
to
start and sometimes it doesnt. it usually comes on if it is my first
try at
booting up in a while. like after an hour or 2. then the subsequent
times
don't work at all. I'm going to try the middle one next. this sucks.

What the hell could be causing this?? I don't think i've ever read any
posts that explain THIS before. Is he eligible for some sort of ibook
logic board recall?

ibook doesnt light, help!

2005-01-28 Thread Dylan Moore
Hey all, i got this message from my friend studying abroad, i think his
backlight/inverter is dead, but what do you think?

I need to ask you a question. My computer is dead. it makes the
diiig
turning on sound, but the screen never lights up and the sleeping type
of
light never comes on. power in Japan comes in 125v, so I thought that
might
be a problem, but from what I can tell my adapter accepts anything
from 100v
to 250v. right? I was wondering if your computer ever did what mine is
doing.
it sucks. The battery is full.

talk to you soon
Clint
he's not very technologically savy, and i dont think he has apple care
at this point. Any help in how to test or replace would be great.

thanks,
dylan
oh yeah, he has a 800mhz ibook g3, 14 screen, dunno ram or HD. this is
from what i recall last time i saw his computer.

free speech (apple care)

2005-01-26 Thread Dylan Moore
Hey geoff, i take issue with something you said...
«So free speech is not allowed unless everything is good too the Apple
ORB»

your emails made it to the list and to everyone's mailboxes, they were
not impeded in any way. Thats all free speech is. Free speech doesn't
guarantee that everyone will also agree with you, which is the case
here. So don't go waving the free speech isn't allowed here flag,
because in truth, you've started an excellent debate with many
participants. We heard you. some agree, and some just disagree. I dunno
if it will get much further cause its been in a downward spiral and i'm
sure most of the listers are just ignoring these posts now, I know i'm
almost at that point.

I mean, i like hearing about apple care successes and failures, cause
it helps me as a consumer when trouble should arise. But the one thing
about this issue is that you're speaking for someone, and while he
sounds somewhat upset about his 14 ibook screen, he isn't as vocal and
not nearly as upset as you are.

G'nite all

Re: Applecare, how long should it take?

2005-01-25 Thread Dylan Moore
Hey geoff,
let me start out by saying that i completely understand your
frustration, I think that apple is changing from the company I knew and
loved a decade ago-- but then again, that's because they're moving to
the mass market. Any time a computer company has to put a warning on
their website stating that users should not eat their product, such as
the ipod shuffle, you know that they've started to market their
products to a population that is a little less than technically
inclined.

For all of that, applecare hasn't really changed. I just got an ibook,
bought applecare for it, and it was 187.00 USD with my student
discount. There was an issue with the keyboard, so they sent me a
replacement, no problem. They've replaced my first gen ipod twice
already, and I didn't even HAVE applecare on that. They took back and
replaced parts on my G3 lombard nearly two years out of any sort of
warranty without cost, they made a house call to replace my motherboard
in my dual G4 quicksilver just barely out of warranty and with no cost.

-- Will they cover a cup of java sloshed into the keyboard? No, that
was your fault for not remembering middle school science, and thinking
that liquid and electronics go hand in hand.

-- Will they cover a laptop that's been dropped out of a moving car?
Well, you can always try, but my guess is that kyle and his ilk will
probably frown and ask again how it happened, just to hear it one more
time.

I see your point about the update software, and while it would be nice
to have CDs to distribute, I for one appreciate that apple doesn't
manufacture such things, which would really be wasteful, since it's
available online anyway. 100mb is a long download for sure, but my
guess is that it'd be done in two days, much shorter than sending a CD
via priority mail.

my suggestion is to lighten up a little bit and look at the whole
pictures. you make it sound like a 14 screen shortage was premeditated
or some sort of plan Steve Jobs came up with just to annoy you. Rest
assured, they can't make screens appear out of the thin air, and making
such things typically takes time.

Oh, and does apple sincerely monitor our lower end mac list? C'mon, and
fess up if you're an apple 'spy'... (you're okay, kyle! : ) We've
caught you reporting our secret messages back to apple ( ;

Anyway, take care and good luck.
-dyl ( =

«Also do not expect much complaints on the Apple boards, they monitor
them very closely. Even lists like this.»

Am I the only one who think it's a joke...?
I was laughing as hard as I can, but I think he is serious
Of course I was kidding.
But if 4K can't get me a simple CD that I am willing to pay
for, I am going to dump 5 to 10, not with these guys.
You know, I'm sure that there are people on the list that wouldn't be
against doing the 200mb download and mailing you a cd. I imagine the
postage wouldn't be (much?) more than a dollar, and lord knows it
wouldn't put us out much. anyway, let me know.

sticky keyboard

2005-01-23 Thread Dylan Moore
Hey, just to add to what laurent has said--
I would strongly advise AGAINST the use of soap- and just use water.
why?
If i remember correctly, most of the parts in the ibook were actually
water-washed after the soldiering phase (and before the addition of
microchips) because of flux residue.
Soap may be too abrasive, but water will probably not hurt the
keyboard. If you do any light scrubbing (and I suggest not, just
repeatedly dipping, soaking,
or a light rub) it may lift the vitals off the board. I'd give it a try
though. Oh, and DEFINITELY wait for it to be entirely dry, laurent was
quite right in suggesting
2 to 3 days. If you've GOT to have it faster, try a fan. (NO HAIR
DRYERS!)

Oh, and laurent- I, for one, appreciate getting paychecks ( =

Less is more- a little story (Gather 'round!)

2004-12-31 Thread Dylan Moore
Hey all,
My bronze Gbook and I-- You couldn't separate us, and I just flat out
loved that machine. All it took was some terrible circumstances and a
shady motherfucker like my ex-roomate's boyfriend, and that was the end
of the romance. Several days later, I had to watch as lombard parts
went up on ebay from some undisclosed place in jersey, painfully aware,
but unable to prove, that they were probably the remnants of my
computer. (Nothing that was sold could be tracked back to mine, but I
knew the guy lived in jersey. My keyboard was partly broken, and the
only part not listed was --drum roll--- the keyboard. Bastard.)

So, friendly reminder from an ex-owner of the world's best laptop-
watch your stuff, don't even think for a SECOND to let it out of your
sight. It WILL walk.

Since then, I bought a 12 ibook. Yeah, it rocks and it was really
cheap (799), but I miss those sexy curves and jaw-dropping matte black
case. I took so much pride in having the last version of an apple
laptop with the upside-down illuminated apple-- just seeing the right
side up one on my ibook is a constant sore reminder.

Someday when I'm not a poor college kid, I'm going to buy one for
myself again. Its up to you guys to keep them in good shape, so when
you're ready to move on to a G5 'book, I'll be ready with a loving
home.

Take care,

File sharing over two computers, wireless style

2004-12-17 Thread Dylan Moore
Hey there:
Just an additional note on how to do this:
1. Pick one laptop, go up to its airport menu (where you see the signal
business goin on)
2. Go down to create network and give it a name.
You dont need external service for this to work.
3. Your buddy's laptop should then connect to that network, selected
from the airport menu
4. Go to the system prefs, then to sharing. Make sure file sharing is
active for both
5. then hit apple-K, click browse, and select the other laptop.
6. Enter the username and password. select the disc to mount.

Thats all there is to it. To stop, drag the mounted server to the
garbage,
it will come up as unmount, then the computer providing the network can
turn its airport off and you're done.

Sorry if this was too basic, I just wanted to make sure I hit all the
points and made it
as clear as possible. Hit me back if you need anything else.

Thanks,
Dylan ( =

ibook booting from panther

2004-12-12 Thread Dylan Moore
Well it doesn't work for me, either, and I really need it to.
1Ghz 12 ibook
If I start from a CD, i get the apple for a few seconds, then the apple
glitches slightly (gets offset, wraps around and gets garbled around
the edge) never shows the spinning loader icon, and sits there. Thats
awesome. WTF?
I'll try using the CDs it came with, but I'd much prefer the control
that the real install discs offer. ppfft.
Is there anyone this WILL work for, or a workaround?

new ibook

2004-10-26 Thread Dylan Moore
Hey all!
from those who remember me, I had a g3 bronze until some bastard stole
it. I've been without a Gbook for awhile now (and thanks for keeping me
on the list) and I'm glad to say that this is no longer the case-- my
1ghz ibook came by way of fedex today. I'm thrilled to be a Gbook
member once again!

For those who have this model of G4 ibook, is there any advice i should
have? The only issue i seem to be running into is that the space key
takes a little extra force to hit, but its always been my experience
that such things naturally work themselves out over time (aka breaking
them in).

thanks again, everyone ( =
take care

Re: ...struck by lightning...

2004-08-08 Thread Dylan Moore
Okay, the last message send out about moving files all around and
re-installing X is a convoluted way of doing an archive install.
Despite its name, there is no archiving. I'm getting ahead of myself.

I recently had a similar problem where I got the ? of death and it
wouldn't even boot to a CD of 9. It did, however, boot to my jaguar CD.
Thank god. Go into install, then click on custom options, then click
the 'archive install' radio button (the name may not be exactly that,
but its roughly the second option and does include the word archive.)
there's a checkbox directly underneath. I believe you want to check
that. make sure you're not checking anything that deletes crap.

Go ahead and install this on your hard drive. This is what it'll do:
first, it will rename your system folder previous system 1 in a
folder called previous systems.
then, it will reinstall an new version of the system folder (cleverly
named system)
finally, it will place all of the user files into the new system
folder, so when you start up, your desktop, dock, home folder,
settings, etc will all be like it was the last time you logged in. The
only difference is that you will need to re-update patches and such,
which is not a big deal.

This will bypass the nonsense of moving (or accidentally forgetting)
all of your files between system folders.

My mac now starts up with no issues whatsoever. (keep in mind I am on a
G4 tower when i did this)

Re: Network G4 iBook with an old computer

2004-06-28 Thread Dylan Moore
BTW just a FWIW (For Whatever It's Worth) comment. You can pick up a
3/4-port Ethernet hub for $15 or less. That makes networking even two
computers easier. This is coming from a guy who used a crossover
cable for years to connect even to Performas. But with the price of
hubs so low these days, it's really better to go that way IMHO.
--Amen!
I have a 7200/90 that i've networked to my G4 tower. First thing i did
was install the highest operating system the 7200 would take- 9.1
Then I got rid of things that habitually annoyed me, including the web
sever extension (I mean, its a 10Base-T, for god's sake. Its not going
to be my sever machine!) Then, i started up file sharing-- which takes
a long time. If i recall properly, it was a hassle, but I could connect
either way.
One more thing, though if you've gotten this far, its probably fine --
make sure the appletalk extension has your ethernet port picked.
Sometimes if its powered off/unplugged for a long time, it'll pick the
most bizarre option, probably just to be funny. (what a sense of humor
the 7200 has...) And make sure your appletalk settings are otherwise
together.

I used my 7200 as a print server so i could still use my stylewriter
with my G3 via the printer port this way. (mac os X likes to disavow
any knowledge of the printer and modem ports, a cause of great pain,
but not networked printers). Bob is right in having a hub though, that
was the magic ingredient for this.

OT update-- i'm in the process of buying an iBook... I don't know the
seller, so hopefully its going to be legitimate. I can't wait to own a
gbook again. Cross your fingers for me!

I need a Gbook ( =

2004-06-26 Thread Dylan Moore
Hey gang,
its been a slow grieving process since the loss of my lombard --and
thanks to the people who sent a message my way, i appreciate it ( =

Since I'm a poor college kid, I've ruled out the need to get anything
along the lines of a G4 powerbook. That means G3s are still in the
game. I'm looking at the ever so durable iBook. Here are my questions:

1. I'm looking for either a G3 iBook, ~900mhz or a G4 ~800Mhz machine.
I'd like audio in. Since I bought my last Gbook from the awesome
members of this list, I wanted to ask here -- anyone have a spare
machine around these specs that they'd like to find a good home for?
I'm thinking a price around 650-700. If it has applecare, more. --This
is what they seem to be going on ebay for, though I'd rather buy from
someone here.
Something a Gbook member said awhile ago has stuck with me-- if you
have to part with your mac, it feels much better to know its going into
a good home, rather than to someone you don't know.

2. Considering that I'm going to be doing audio processing, flash work,
and Max/MSP stuff, is an iBook in this range what i'm looking for? The
lombard was fine so if someone has a powerbook g3 in good condition,
i'll consider that too. I'm not terribly interested in anything under
333Mhz and it might be painful to re-purchase my machine (not quite the
same, you know?) I need something rugged, so i'm sort of hesitant to
buy anything with hinge/case issues. Am I off the mark in thinking that
the iBook doesn't have this issue?

3. What the hell, if you have an old ibook in great condition, drop me
a line anyway. The less money I spend here can go to groceries and
bills. ( =

Thanks everyone, you've been wonderful ( :

the saddest day ever

2004-06-20 Thread Dylan Moore
Hey all...
Well, i wish i had a funny way of saying this, but i don't. Last week,
my g3 bronze, 2 batteries, CD module, charger, wireless card, and my
entire CD collection got stolen. I'm sure that some of you can
sympathize with the experience (and at least it wasn't done in by
dumping beer on the keyboard. right?). If you don't mind if i stay on
the list, i'd like to. The only other portable I have to tote around
and use is a powerbook 520c (let the muscle-building begin). I'm
seriously in the market for another laptop, preferably something in the
G3 range, perhaps lower end G4. Any advice or offers? Should i wait for
the G5s and then pick up older stock G4s once they drop price?

Take care, and thanks for being there to help out a fellow-- now
ex--Gbook member.

Re: getting rid of menubar bluetooth icon

2004-03-02 Thread Dylan Moore
okay, this is what you do in jag, lets see if its close enough for
panther:
Apple menuSystem Preferences...
Then, under KeyboardMouse, click on the Bluetooth tab. At the bottom
is a
Show Bluetooth status in menu bar checkbox. Uncheck it and close the
window.

take care

OK, I have another odd question. I Carbon Copy Clone'd my data from my

and reinstalled Panther. Everything is working fine now, but I have a
Bluetooth logo with a line through it in the menubar, leftover from
the AlBook, which has Bluetooth. When I click on it it says Bluetooth
not available. I know this.

Anyone know what I need to delete or change to get rid of this icon in
the menubar?

Any info is appreciated.

Re: COPYING CDs in the Finder

2004-02-22 Thread Dylan Moore
1. open disk copy, its a utility in the apps folder. Put the CD in the
drive, then copy the disc image to your desktop, or wherever. Then,
select burn image, select the image you just made, then put in a blank
CD. YAY, instant copy!

Its 4 am and I'm exhausted, and i just came out of digest mode 3
minutes ago. Sorry if I missed something vital to answering this.

Xclaim USB

2004-02-22 Thread Dylan Moore
Hi all. I long ago lost the CD that came with my ATI XCLAIM USB tv
tuner. Now, i need to reinstall it onto my bronze so i can watch tv on
it ( ;
I mean, pursue academic goals...
right.
So, If ANYONE has this CD, could you please send me a disc image of it?
I would appreciate so much as the software is simply NOT on the net. I
would have to otherwise request a CD from ati, and that would take
FOREVER.

Thanks all, much powerbook love.

Hey Mike,
Sorry I didn't catch that you were using panther. That seems odd that
it doesn't come with a disc copy utility. I could send you a jag
version, or link you to the apple download page, but I have no
knowledge of jag utility anticompatibility with panther. I don't see
why it wouldn't work. e-mail me back if you're interested.
