Close call with WS keyboard

2006-02-24 Thread Gary Goldberg

I spilled some cola on the edge of my keyboard near
the USB card. I wiped it up but some leaked inside.

The keyboard stopped responding, so I unplugged
and wiped up what I could after removing the keyboard
(the mouse and trackpad continued to work fine).

For a while I got endless repeats to keystrokes and
even got a string of "n's" to the Delete key.

After rebooting things SEEM to be OK (I'm typing
on the WS right now, allthough the keyboard seems
to "bounce" a bit as it doesn't seem to be fitting
back quite the way it was before.

Anything I should watch for now? Any tips in case
I do this stupid thing again (NEVER will I drink and
type! :-)

Gary

Re: WallStreet doesn't completely start

2006-01-19 Thread Gary Goldberg

I had a similar problem when my Sonnet G4/500
CPU was installed under OS 9.1 (upgraded from 8.1 at the
same time). The problem was that the heat shield wasn't
properly installed and thus the heat during bootup became
too great and the machine froze.

Subject: WallStreet doesn't completely start
Date: Thu, 19 Jan 2006 11:38:34 -0800

In-Reply-To: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>

What could be wrong with this WallStreet (10.2.8, 512 RAM,
Sonnet G4 processor) ?

At startup, the desktop doesn't fully load. Sometimes the
menu bar comes into view, sometimes not, but the weird
thing that whatever is in view -- clock, battery indicator,
menu bar -- the items open on click, but don't do anything.
Same with the Dock. If I mouse over the Dock, it appears,
but the icons don't work.

If I start in OS 9.2.1, it works OK, but freezes
intermittently, which is also weird because that never
happens when it's running in Classic (but that's actually
different, isn't that true?).

Re: Wallstreet hinge replacement by PBParts

2005-12-24 Thread Gary Goldberg

I went for the $69 hinge replacement service (plus $27
shipping) from PB Parts in Scottsdale, Ariz. My Wallstreet
G3 returned today, and it's like a new, usable 'puter. The
screen won't flop forward or back anymore, which means it's
a traveling companion again.

Plus, the PBParts people fixed some tiny things for free!

I doubted whether I should invest another 90-odd dollars in
a 10-year-old G3 Powerbook, but now I am quite glad that I
did. My highest recommendation for PBParts to other users
plagued by the stupid Wallstreet hinge problem.

A note of caution is merited here:

I used PBParts to have my hinges replaced, too. Less than
a year later, the repair failed. I had to pay for shipping to
them, but they admitted "it was something we haven't
seen before" and send it back quickly overnight at their
expense.

Further, another year later and the hinges are a little wobbly
now: I can't keep the lid at less than a 90-degree angle or
it'll slam shut (I'd prefer to keep it just a bit open, as I have
a 17" monitor behind it which I use instead of the WS's screen).

PBParts thinks it's the screen support (not the hinges itself),
but has agreed to consider it a repair warranty issue if it
needs further work.

So far, it's stayed this way for 5 months with no worsening.

Wall Street starting to refuse to wake up from Sleep

2005-09-21 Thread Gary Goldberg
Twice this week my WS (upgraded to G4/500, running OS 9.1)
has refused to wake up from Sleep. The first time the
screen was gray, the 2nd time the spinning clock never
stopped (both times applications were open).

Does this indicate coming hardware problems or that
perhaps I need to run Disk Warrior soon (I usually
run it every 6 weeks, but haven't for 2 months or so)?

I can't say it's been especially worthile in the 3 years I've had the

anything else. And I had to upgrade from OS 8.1 to 9.1 or
the CPU upgrade wouldn't work (but not a bad idea anyway :-)
I also found out that I had to put a "." before my Iomega extension

Re: Can a WS recognize a DVD disk

2005-07-26 Thread Gary Goldberg
I made the DVD on a DVD-R/VCR combo.

I guess now neither of my WS drives (internal CD-ROM or external
CD-R/W) will even recognize the DVD disk. I was hoping it would
at least recognize the disk in some way so I could duplicate it with
Toast.

I'd like to duplicate a DVD disk I made with my DVD-R/VCR player/recorder

I have Toast Titanium 5, but so far nothing happens when I put a DVD
disk in the internal drive (I have some DVD-related extensions disabled,
such as the DVD decoder extension, but have the Apple CD/DVD extension
activated).

Re: The Wallstreet Sonnet Processor Upgrades....

2005-04-28 Thread Gary Goldberg
I bought a G4/500 upgrade for my G3/250 WS almost
2 years ago. The only speed increase I've noticed is
when scanning or converting a CD to an MP3, i.e.
CPU-intensive apps.

The lack of a graphics chip upgrade path for a WS
is the biggest drawback to a speed increase, IMHO

Slightly OT: will upgrading from MRJ 2.2.3 to 2.2.5 improve my browsing?

2005-01-17 Thread Gary Goldberg
I have OS 9.1 on my Wall Street (now a G4/500) and
use Netscape v4.79 for e-mail and some browsing,
reserving IE 5.1.7 for most browsing.

Will installing MRJ 2.2.5 improve anything for me?
I'm a bit reluctant in case the installer sprays files all
over my HD and I have problems and need to go back
to 2.2.3.

screen sizes vs. reality

2005-01-01 Thread Gary Goldberg
I have a 13.3" Wall Street.

Perhaps I'm spoiled by the external 17"
monitor I've used the past few years to
made surfing and working easier, but
when I travel I find the smaller screen
size confining and some smaller print
on websites harder to read.

Best reason for using an external monitor
at home if you have a smaller screen:
it prolongs the life of the screen, the
most expensive part of the laptop!

Well, it's hard to believe that the line is noisy every time I've visited
for the last 6 years and it's not really worth buying something for
once or twice a year visits. Also, the voice quality is OK and the
connection speed is normally 45333-49333. I've experimented with
turning error correction on and off, but with no improvement

Is my Wall Street's connection problem fixable?

2004-12-23 Thread Gary Goldberg
Every time I visit my mother I have a hell of
a time connecting to my ISP from her house (which
was built in 1991)...while her 1997-era Compaq laptop
has no problem (connecting to AOL). It takes about 10
tries to get a connection. Otherwise it fails at "Starting
PPP") using OS 9.1 and Remote Access.

I have no problems anywhere else, even at
my brother's in the same town, dialling into the
same access numbers.

Is there a known problem with the Wall Street modems?
I did the firmware upgrade that became available in late
1998. I've tried other modem scripts but since I have no
connection problems elsewhere, I figure it's either the
modem or the large number of phones at Mom's (I've
unplugged several of them, but that doesn't help and,
anyway, why doesn't SHE have problems with her older
laptop?)

Sherlock 2 problems

2004-12-12 Thread Gary Goldberg
I've been indexing my Wall Street's backup
Jaz disk (about 1 1/3 Gb on it) using Sherlock 2.
I set Preferences to "do not index" icons
and folders which were labelled "cool", yet
Sherlock is indexing images (which it's not
supposed to do) and some of the .pdf files
I labelled as "cool".

Right now my Jaz disk is writing
95% of the time and scanning only about
5% of the time and the indexing has been
going on 9 hours.

Anyone know what's going on?

Three posts from PBParts.com say I won't likely be able to do it:

The Wallstreet was not originally equipped to run software DVD Decoders and
it required a hardware cardbus decoder card to function properly. I have
also never seen a USB 1.1 External DVD player that works well.

Your only choice to Play a DVD will be VLC on OS X.
Anyway, as the Video card is not supported, I don't
know if it'll work.
Apple DVD Player (OS 8.6 and OS 9) needs an internal
DVD Drive to work.
Also, DVD Player (OS X) doesn't support your machine,
thanks to Apple.

I'm running OS 8.6 on my Lombard because OS X don't
have DVD Playback on this machine too.
A few messages ago, someone said the there was a Combo
(CD-R & DVD) for the Wallstreet series, but it was
discontinued.

I must admit that for 4 of its 6 years I shut down my Wall Street
every time I was through with it. About 2 years ago two different
people (both techs) said "you have cats, don't you?" after opening
up the case and at about the same time I found out that one didn't
need to shut down a PB. The only computers I'd heard about running
successfully for days on end were Amigas rendering something.

Anyway, I now shut down my PB at night and always cover it with
some plastic wrap when not in use.

Thanks to everyone for pointing out that apparently
I CAN use iTunes with a Wall Street running OS 9.1

However, before I jump in, I just wanted to note that

to my mp3 collection and burn downloaded
songs to a CD (I have a CD-R/W drive). Anyone
see any problems?

iTunes and Wall Street and OS 9.1?

2004-09-06 Thread Gary Goldberg
Per the Apple iTunes website you need a Mac
with built-in USB ports to use iTunes. I only
have USB functionality through a Belkin PC
card adapter.

Has anyone been able to use iTunes with
a Wall Street w/o OS X?

I don't know what e-mail program you use, but you'll
have to change the character set to ISO-8859-1 before sending
to the list. I have to remember to do this, too, as I have my
default character set as Windows 1251 (Cyrillic) so I can
type and read in both Russian and English.

My WS manual says it's a PC card slot but the USB adapter I have
in there is a Cardbus card, I think. Whatever.
Anyway...assuming I reinstall the Airport software, do I need
my Ethernet-related extensions, too?
Will I then need any 3rd party software or will the Agere or Orinoco
card work at a hot spot right out of the box?
Just in case I want to use my WS in another room, will I be able
to if I buy a[n Airport?] base station? The antenna issue has me
a bit confused.

Thanks for all who commented

Sorry, I don't understand. Where DOES such a card go, if not in a Cardbus
slot? In an expansion bay?

Seems I deleted all my Airport and Ethernet and networking software
when I upgraded from 8.1 to 9.1 (at a user group - I only actually have
the 9.04 CD and 9.1 upgrade download).

I should mention that my intent is to be able to use my WS on the

Wall Street, Wi-fi, and OS 9.1?

I called MacMall yesterday wondering if
I they could recommend a wi-fi Cardbus card

Questions from a Wi-Fi newbie

2004-05-14 Thread Gary Goldberg
A post a week ago about a wi-fi PC card
for Wall Street Powerbooks got me thinking
about buying such a card.

While I don't need a home network, it'd
be nice to use my laptop from somewhere
other than on my desk or, when travelling,
from a wi-fi-equipped restaurant or other
"hot spot" I've read about.

Buthow does it work? Does the
wi-fi card automatically detect my internal
modem and Internet settings and dial
the access number I've set up for that
location? What about security? Can I
get WEP with OS 9.1?

Strange behavior of Wall Street internal CD-ROM drive

2004-03-31 Thread Gary Goldberg
I wanted to reboot from my Disk Warrior
CD-ROM so I put it in the internal CD-ROM drive and
rebooted, holding down the "C" key, but the computer
started up from the HD, eventually reporting that
it couldn't recognize the CD-ROM and offered to eject
or initialize it, so I chose the former.

The CD-ROM had opened on the Desktop when I had
inserted it before rebooting and also was recognized
when I re-inserted it after it had been ejected.

This happened all over again when I repeated
the procedure, but restarting with the C key down
only immediately after inserting the CD-ROM.

Finally, I decided to choose the CD-ROM from
the Startup Disk control panel and that worked when
I restarted.

Perhaps related is that the Wall Street started
up yesterday with a bootable Jaz disk in the drive.
I thought you had to press a specific key combination
(Option+Command+Shift+Delete) to get a Mac to
boot from an external drive, overriding the internal HD.

Anyone have any explanations?

How to chain 2 Wall Street PB peripherals?

2004-03-21 Thread Gary Goldberg
I have both a SCSI-2 2Gb Jaz drive and a (Centronics
50-pin) external CD-R/W drive.

I'd like to be able to back up my Jaz disks without
having to copy them to my Wall Street's HD first

chain them.

Does anyone else have a similar setup and, if
so, how do they solve it?

Saving the Wall Street

2004-03-02 Thread Gary Goldberg
I had somewhat similar problems (but only on shutdown)
when I upgraded my G3/250 WS running OS 8.1 to G4/500
(Sonnet upgrade card, upgrading to 9.1 at the same time).

It took about eight months (!) to diagnose the problem
(with the help of a Mac expert via e-mail). It seems to have been
an extension conflict with the Iomega extension. Just putting
a tilde (~) before it solved the problem

Wall Street Video Problem

2004-02-29 Thread Gary Goldberg
This sounds what bedeviled my G3/250 WS which I bought in June 1998.
The problem had exhibited itself by Jan 2000. I only found out later
that Apple would repair this at their expense, including overnight shipping
to/from Dallas (they provide the box). Perhaps the offer is still
valid (I didn't have Apple Care).

I think the problem was a twisted video cable on 13.3" screens only.

OT: ISPs

2004-02-26 Thread Gary Goldberg
I like Earthlink because of SpamBlocker, which has been
GREAT at catching spam before it gets to my Inbox on
my dialup account.

I don't use any Earthlink software at all, which means I
had to enter all the names in my Address Book to their
online site. It's been worth it.

As for dropped connections, I think this is a problem
with my Wall Street's modem. It doesn't happen with
my Amigas using the same phone jack, same account,
and an external modem for the Amigas.

In OS 9.1 I can boot from a bootable Jaz disk connected to my
Wall Street via the HDI-30 SCSI adapter by holding
down the Option+Cmd+Delete+Shift keys.

Maybe it still works under OS X?

PBParts makes good on hinge repair

2004-01-11 Thread Gary Goldberg
I just wanted to inform the list that PBParts
seems to have repaired my Wall Street PB's hinges
correctly the 2nd time and even sent it back overnight
for free (without my asking). They didn't exactly
admit they'd messed up the original repair, only that
"this is something we haven't seen before".

Somewhat OT: looking for spyware tools

2004-01-10 Thread Gary Goldberg
Every once in a while I hit the "disconnect" on
Remote Access Status but for some reason the
computer (Wall Street upgraded to a G4/500 and
running OS 9.1) tries to dial out again.

I have Virex 6.1 and scanned the System Folder
again with no results but if it's spyware I wouldn't
expect an anti-virus program to do much good.

Are there any websites where, like anti-virus
programs, you can get a free spyware checkup?

I talked to them and they agreed to take it back as a warranty
matter. We both suspect that the hinges may have been put
on too tight or something.

I'm a bit calmer now that I've read their "owner pays for shipping
for warranty matters" posting on their website.

Anyone else have a failed Wall Street hinge repair?

2004-01-02 Thread Gary Goldberg
Less than 3 weeks ago I got my Wall Street PB
back from PBParts with its hinge replaced with their
own steel hinges. At first, it seemed odd that when
I opened the PB the hinge was so tight that the
whole PB lifted off the desk. Then there was the
creaking as I opened it and a feeling of more and
more "play" in the screen position (I use it with
a VGA monitor plugged into the back so I need the
screen to stay up at about a 45-degree angle so
that I can see over the screen easily).

Looking into the back of my PB with the
cover closed I could see 2 small chips of material
about 1/4" by 1/8" that were sticking out, removed
them, photographed them, and send all this to
PBPart yesterday via e-mail.

Anyone else have a similar problem?

On a previous visit I unplugged several of the phones and connected

Irritating that her 1997-era PC notebook sitting right next to
my PB, connecting to the same phone line, indeed the same
phone jack NEVER has problems!

Inability to obtain, maintain stable connection from one location with Wall Street PB

2003-12-25 Thread Gary Goldberg
When I go to my mother's in Indianapolis I have great
difficulty in logging on to this e-mail account on any of 6
local Earthlink access numbers (but not from my brother's
elsewhere in the city).

I get as far as "starting PPP" and then the attempt usually
fails with a response from Remote Access (I'm running OS 9.1)
that there was a problem on the remote side, check your
settings, etc. Even if I do manage to get connected it's often
"disconnected" after a few minutes. Earthlink has been clueless
in the past, and I doubt it's their fault anyway.

The settings are the same as at home.

Remember, I'm running OS 9.1 here. Are any of these products still
available for "Classic"?

My CPU is G4/500; the WS bus speed is 83 Mhz, but my purpose is
for conversion of analog VHS to DVD (i.e. not playback from the HD;
I don't have a DVD player inside or outside my WS)

Any way to import video into a Wall Street Powerbook?

2003-12-15 Thread Gary Goldberg
There was an interesting item in the latest MacMall catalogue:

a Belkin USB notebook card that will let you input video w/o Fireware.
It has RCA and S-video inputs.

However, I'm running OS 9.1 - is there any product which can
trigger the import of video?

My aim is to digitize my VHS tapes and some day convert
them to DVD. It seems there are combo players out there that
will play VHS tapes and even record to DVD, but only from TV
or an external source, not from the VHS player.

Another satisifed PBParts.com customer

2003-12-14 Thread Gary Goldberg
I, too, just want to report a positive experience with
PBParts.com

I also had a failing hinge on my Wall Street PB and the
latch was not catching either. I chose their hinges over
Apple's for $10 extra. I sent them the PB on Monday
and got it back yesterday.

Service and work was professional throughout

System profiler

2003-03-22 Thread Gary Goldberg
My Wall Street (originally a G3/250) has always shown my RAM configuration
correctly, whether under OS 8.1 or 9.1, whether the original 64 Mb, the later
96 Mb, or the present 192 Mb.

I'm a little confused by this post. Is someone trying to say that they were
annoyed by a non-English post?

I don't know German, but I DO know Russian, so if the poster wants
to send me a post in KOI-8 coding I'll translate it and re-post it to the list.

Wall Street. I got the G4/500 from Sonnet.

So with a G4/500 it WOULD be fast enough, regardless of
the bus speed (83 Mhz, I think)?

USB card speed for Wall Streets?

2003-03-08 Thread Gary Goldberg
I've been thinking of getting a Cardbus USB card for my
(originally) G3/250 (now upgraded to G4/250), which I think has
a 83Mhz bus.

Is the speed with such USB cards fast enough for most devices
which depend on USB, such as webcams, external DVD players, etc.?

What version of Apple Menu Options in OS 9.2.x?

2003-03-05 Thread Gary Goldberg
I've been getting occasional shutdown freezes ever since upgrading my Wall
Street
from a G3/250 to G4/500 and simultaneously from OS 8.1 to 9.1

I've recently found that disabling the Apple Menu Options control panel solves
the problem.
The OS 9.1 version is 1.1.8; is there a later version for the Classic OS?

Is the Powerbook G3 Enabler necessary after upgrading the CPU or OS?

2003-02-25 Thread Gary Goldberg
Shannon's query got me wondering, especially after I couldn't find this file in
my System Folder.

Since buying my G3/250 Wall Street, I've upgraded it to a G4/500 with Sonnet's
WS Crescendo CPU upgrade and to OS 9.1 and now this file isn't there any more.

I've been experiencing some strange things since: momentary freezes of the
cursor
(about 3 seconds) in various programs and occasional freezes when shutting down
(necessitating a reboot). Sometimes I get a shutdown freeze even when rebuilding
the desktop with Tech Tool Lite.

Can anyone verify whether this file is in their CPU- or OS-upgraded Wall
Street?

Can you plug/unplug devices on a Wall Street in sleep mode?

2003-02-19 Thread Gary Goldberg
Just wondering if it's the same as when it's shut off. I was thinking
of my digital camera (serial port) or any SCSI devices.

I upgraded last summer from a G3/250 to a Sonnet Crescendo G4/500
and from 8.1 to 9.1 at the same time. I got it for $375 at Mac Mall.
Sonnet support is good but I've had occasional shutdown/restart freezes
and don't know if they're OS- or CPU-related.

Problems with Sonnet Crescendo G4/500 upgrade card for Wall Street models

2003-02-07 Thread Gary Goldberg
Hi all, I'm wondering if anyone else has had these problems after upgrading
(in my case, from a G3/250 Wall Street and from OS 8.1 to 9.1) to a G4/500
Sonnet Crescendo card (which
includes their Crescendo extension):

- occasional display freezes at shutdown

- occasional cursor freezes of, say, 3-5 seconds in varying programs (e.g.
Word98, Netscape
Messenger, Bejeweled (game).
