I need to look at it more before I can say anything.

The interface takes some getting used to, for me, but that's OK.

How do you get it to work with Eudora?

Eudora has worked famously for me since version 2, I think. All versions of
Macs, from Performas to... you name it. "Seamless integration" with PGP and
all sorts of anti-spam software now, no troubles, except for windows
resizing themselves in 5.

Am running Entourage now on a trial run (well over a month) and no troubles.
9.1, Kanga, 160 MB. No problems. Still, I know MS, and I back up that damn
database religiously.

As for MS Outbreak, no thanks.

For me, the real oddball is Nisus Email. I need to use it more often to
offer any valid comments.

Actually, what gets me is that most of the kvetchers I've encountered not
only _can_ buy new Macs, they do, and they also buy state-of-the-art
peripherals, digital cameras, etc.

Most are not the folks who are the average Joe Mac users, with equipment
that is two, three, four or more years old.

Hell, if you can afford a TiBook, you can afford $50/year. If you don't like
it, find an alternative.

As for the pricing for Jaguar, it doesn't surprise me and seems perfectly
fair when you compare it to, say, the "deals" offered by Redmond, which you
brought up, Bruce.

This Kanga runs at about 160F. I can cool it by 30F by simply putting the
back "feet" down and sliding an empty Zip disk case or two under the front.
That way, it's still stable to work on, and the air circulates -- it's off
the surface of your workspace. That, and one of those cutesy little desktop
mini-fans: presto, much cooler. You could spend bucks on CoolPads, but this
way you don't have to.

I hardly ever shut it down (except for software installation -- well, I
restart -- and restart during occasional troubleshooting). I use sleep; I
don't shut it down.

It's plugged into the AC here at home, and yes, it gets hot, the bottom
especially. I've found that if you just elevate and ventilate, things go
well.

The only problem I ever had in years with Eudora was with 5.0, which didn't
lose data, but would get flaky about keeping windows where you wanted them.

The application has never lost data for me, not in eight years of on-again,
off-again use. Even if another application seizes up the whole Mac, I've
never lost data.

When I use Entourage, I feel obligated to back up the User Data folder three
times a week. Nothing bad has happened yet, but because of the way the
application stores the database and its integration with other Microsoft
applications, it's only a matter of time.

Fair enough. This beautiful old Kanga has an old IBM drive, and for its age,

They work with Eudora -- Email Magician is Eudora-only.

Don't know how the scripts work, and as near as I can tell, Email Magician
thus far works only with Mac OS 9; PGP, with 9 back to at least 8. OS X
versions are supposedly in the works.

Try this:

1. Charge the battery all the way up, if you can;
2. Drain it all, if you can, until the machine goes dead;
3. Recharge battery all the way, if you can;
4. Zap PRAM;
5. Reset Power Manager button;
6. Restart;
7. Shut down and take the battery out for the night, making sure the

8. Try it again after a break.

Your freezes may have nothing to do with the battery. Could be an extension
conflict, a PRAM problem, yadda, yadda.

I solved my little freeze problem on a humble Kanga G3 simply by doing a
clean install of 9.1. When the battery gets too low on operation, I simply
power up the laptop, charge the battery all the way, then pull the AC plug
and let it drain. Plug it in and let it charge... voila!

If things get strange with sleep, fix with resetting the Power Manager
button, hold in until restart. Take battery out of machine for 10, restart.
Good to go. (Different with Duos and 2400s, but that you can look up.)

I've had nothing but good things on laptops from 3400s to 5300s to G3s just
doing the simple stuff. No need to get in a pretzel. Just do the
common-sense stuff.

I had a battery that wouldn't recharge on a 1400. Zapped the PRAM, took the
battery out overnight, put it in next morning, presto. Ran for two years.

Battery woes.

2002-09-08 Thread Greg Burkman

I can't understand why anyone would tolerate a battery that runs for 15-45
minutes a charge for long.

I'm running two separate batteries in the Kanga and each one runs for 2-3
hours a pop, possibly longer, if you're careful. And that's with Quicktime 5
and Photoshop 5.5.

Even back when I was running a 5300, I could squeeze 2.5 hours out of it
with proper management.

Also, when the batteries aren't holding a charge as long as you'd like, I
always recharge them fully, set the 'Book not to sleep, and let 'em drain
overnight. Then plug into AC and recharge fully. Go on your merry way.

Quicktime update.

2002-09-08 Thread Greg Burkman

Kanga G3 running 9.1 (hey, this is low end Mac). I have Quicktime 6 running
happily and just got prompted that some components needed updating. Though
I'm sceptical of these things since an update to QT 4 hosed another
PowerBook awhile back, I clicked OK and went through it.

Now it's installed a QT 5.0.2 folder, but hasn't put any 5.0.2 extensions on
the drive.

What's up with this? Normal? If so, why?

Re: TiBook HotPlate

2002-08-29 Thread Greg Burkman

This Kanga I recently bought gets hot enough that I won't set it down on a
cloth-covered surface (like a bed or... my lap!). Software reports
temperature as anywhere between 150F and 180F. Here's how I handle it:

1. Since it's a 3400 case design, it has the "spring-down" feet in back. I
use them. Keeping the rear of the machine elevated helps a lot.

2. I put two old Zip disk cases, stacked vertically, securely positioned
under the front of the machine. This means the bottom of the notebook is
wholly elevated from the surface below.

3. I bought one of those cutesy little "teeny fans" and set it very near the
machine.

This, or a similar solution, might also help the heat problem on a TiBook.
CoolPads look like another effective option. For this machine, the trick is
just not to let the bottom of the machine rest wholly on a surface for too
long when it's running full-tilt boogie workouts. Otherwise, after a few
hours, it starts to smell like you're cooking popcorn.

"Upgrade" to OS 7.5, use an SE/30, load PGP and Arabic support, and an

Re: Entourage question.

2002-08-19 Thread Greg Burkman

The Entourage problem was user error on my part. If it can't run reliably on
the 25 MB RAM I've allotted it on a G3 running 9.1, then to heck with it. I
prefer Eudora 5.1 Pro anyway.

So far, btw, Office 2001 hasn't given me a lot of headaches.

Thanks, Laurent, but I figured it out. I had imported all my contacts, etc.,
from Eudora, and Entourage set me up with two "accounts": one for Entourage,
and the old one from Eudora.

It's also playing nuttier than a sh*thouse rat with 9.1 on this machine,

I just installed Office 2001 on my Kanga. Whenever I send a message,
the application sends a duplicate copy of that message, every time.
What am I missing here? Is there something in the Prefs that needs to

Thanks for any help in advance.

Personally, I prefer using TechTool to do it, because it will save a
