Is it
not just possible to install the driver to OS 9 so that it can read

BTW, I have an external Firewire 120G La Cie hooked up, and it

functions in OSX.

I do use OS 9 because I'm writing a lengthy document and I prefer Word

Office 2001 to Office X for this because of abilities with Thesaurus

Spelling that were removed with Office X's Word. I loaded it from an
old OS

Would my old back-up CDs for OS 9 have the driver? And if so, could I
get it
from there and use it? Would I find it in the same place as where this
CD
driver went during installation -- >Systems>extensions?

Or would I need the installer to do this? (perhaps I also have it

on the old CDs? I tended to save the installers in the past... Not
that I
knew why; just paranoid...
The way I understood this was that if you wanted to be able to read a
drive or partition that has OS 9 on it (from OS X), you must install
the OS 9 disc drivers when you install OS X. I don't know if it can be
done after OS X installation or not. Again, I can't say positively that
I'm remembering this correctly. If you have your OS X installation
documentation handy, it might offer more info. Does your LaCie drive
have OS 9 installed on it, or OS X? Or are you simply using it for data
storage?

http://www.belkin.com/support/compatlists/F5U114-MAC.html
Yep, that will give you the physical connection, and will work fine
under OS 9. I use one on my iMac (OS 9) to connect to my Newton, but it
doesn't play well with OS X. For that (X), I use the Keyspan. But it
still won't allow me to use my PLW 300. The deal-breaker here is that
in order to use the old Apple printers, you have to use Gimp-print
under OS X, and Gimp only works with Postscript printers. As I said
before, I don't know if the LS is Postscript or not, but my 300 isn't.
But if anybody knows of another way to do this, I'd love to hear about.
Otherwise, I'll keep looking for one that's Postscript with ethernet.

I have too. I started with DOS, went thru Winblows 3.1, 3.11, 95, 98,
and finally Win2k. I tried Linux, and BeOS, but guess were I wound up?
Yep, OS X.

Windows lacks the ease of use
and the lack of hassle we are used to.
I find Windows to be just as easy to use and even more Hassle-free
than my

Winblows easy to use and hassle free?! Don't make me laugh! I've gotten
BSOD's with Win2k, and it's supposed to be virtually crash-proof! Yeah.
Right...
Life has been so much better since I've been running OS X and Macs,
than it ever was when I was using PC's. It's so nice to be able to
simply use my computer and not have to constantly dick around with it
just to keep it operating. My lone PC running Win2k still resets itself
for no discernible reason whenever it feels like it. And It's been
scanned on numerous occasions for viruses, as well as any other
hardware/software problems to no avail. My OS X machines will run for
weeks with ever having an OS crash or needing to be re-booted.
Easy and hassle-free? You bet!

And in our happy little world,
many of us just forget.
I wouldn't call it a happy little world. I just had a call to fix an
old
lady's iMac. It was a minor issue, but it certainly proved that the
Mac OS
wasn't any easier or more intuitive to use than Windows.
At least we don't have to worry about every virus scare that comes
along, as well as the "Security Update de-jour".

I don't tend to use much in the
way of warrantees because I am a to it yourself'er, I have a bit of
formal training, working on some more, and have been working in the
tech support industry for several years now. I figure I have more time
than money. But warrantees are a good thing. And no one is giving me a
warrantee on the 4-8 year old hardware I have around in my workshop.
Yes, but it's unlikely that you would need one either. Old Apple
hardware
was actually built to last. There's a reason they have a reputation for
quality, and it seems to me that the iBook issue is just one of many
with
which they are slowly losing that reputation. I'd feel comfortable
buying an
old Mac, but I'd be very wary of plunking my hard earned cash down for
a new
one.

Like Apple is the only computer company that has occasional hardware
problems? Yeah, right. Not!! Why do you think companies like Dell and
Gateway have so many people in tech support? It sure isn't because they
build such high quality machines! Believe me, I wouldn't trade any of
my Macs for the most high-end new Dell, Gateway, HP, or any other PC,
any time, any way.
What it boils down to is the fact that the average PC user has been
brainwashed to believe that mediocrity is the status quo, so they don't
expect anything better. However, the average Mac user expects much
more. So when Apple does happen to drop the ball, the lynch mob forms
up. If it were Dell, nobody would give it a second thought...

But that's just my opinion, and all I'll say on this topic. Oh, and for
the record, I have an 700 Mhz iBook with a serial number in the range
in question..

O/T DVD-RAM?

drives. I've noticed that the IBM Travelstar drives are mentioned
here quite often. Are they a good choice?

The Travelstars (from IBM/Hitachi, either appears to be good) or the
Toshibas both have been praised. I plan on getting a Toshiba, but
mainly
because (right now) the Toshibas in the size I'm looking at have a
larger
buffer on them (for the price). Both types of drives use the fluid
bearings, which will give you a quiet drive (important in some
environments).

Well, I had been all set to buy a Travelstar, until I opened my iBook
and saw what brand the recently replaced/recently died 20 gig drive
was. Unfortunately it was a Hitachi. Now I'm not sure what to get.
Maybe the Toshiba, they're Apple OEM.
Also, I had been looking at going with a 5400 rpm drive as a good
compromise between speed and battery life, but apparently the fastest
30 gig drive is 4200 rpm. So if I want a 5400, I guess that means going
with a 40 gig. I was looking at Pricewatch.com, and I found that there
is only about $20-$25 difference between the 30/4200 and the 40/5400.
Since I plan to use this machine for a long time, I figure I'll go with
the 40/5400. Now I just need to decide on a brand and a vendor.

Hard drive recommendations?

2003-12-27 Thread John Acuff
The HD in my recently acquired Icebook just died, and I need to get a
replacement. I would like to get a 30-40 gig drive. What brands or
particular drives would you recommend? I have not needed to buy a new
drive in a while, so I don't really have any idea what to be looking
for. I have noticed that most of the junk drives I have laying around
are Western Digital, but these are older desktop drives. I've noticed
that the IBM Travelstar drives are mentioned here quite often. Are they
a good choice? How about drive speed? Where is a good place to get one
at a decent price? (other than eBay)
Thanks!

John

I'm out of my mind right now, but feel free to leave a message.

Wallstreet video problem

2003-11-18 Thread John Acuff
Got a problem. I sold my Wallstreet, and the guy received it today, but
he says that it is having problems with the video. I never had any
video problems at all during the time I was using it. The only problems
I had were a dead Pram battery which I replaced, and a bad main battery
which I also replaced. I was using the machine right up until I shut it
down to pack it in the box. I made sure to pack it with plenty of
padding, but is it possible that something video-related might have
gotten jarred loose during shipping? He says that the screen jumps up
and down crazily, and gets alternately light and dark. What should be
at the bottom of the screen shows up at the top.
Fortunately, I had it insured, but I'm sure he would much rather have
the working machine. Anyone have any ideas what might be wrong?
Thanks!

I remember people mentioning how Jaguar was improving in performance
(speed) with each update, but I never noticed.
The main problem is that Panther won't run on a Wallstreet. At least
not out of the box. According to Apple, Panther won't run on any
machine that was not originally equipped with USB. That leaves
Wallstreet's out, as well as Beige G3's. Which is one of the reasons
that I am selling my Wallstreet.
However, according to OWC, a future version of XPostfacto may allow
these machines to use Panther too. For more info on XPostfacto, go to

i thought of that. One machine is set to Indianapolis, the other

Yeah, probably. It happens with a Comcrap laptop we have, too. And
it also happens if you hook up most DVD players to a VCR and thence
to a TV (like when a TV only has an F-type coax RF-in so you need to
use a VCR to act as an RCA->RF converter).
That's Macrovision. Thank the MPAA for that. Lousy rotten oligarchs...

Actually, you can thank Congress for that. They were the ones that

John,

My feeling is that what you are asking is like hoping that Ford will
design
a 2004 Mustang with all new engine, amenities and traction but can
also use
1966 Mustang wheels and tires because you already bought them and they
are
just sitting in your garage doing nothing.

Solution to the car dilemma: Ride the classic boat and take pride in

Solution to the computer dilemma: Ride the classic boat and take
pride in
it.
Nope. Totally different analogy. The point I'm trying to make is, that
if it was more important to Apple to get people using the new OS, than
to get them to buy new equipment, they would have written serial port
support into the OS. Instead, they chose to obsolete a whole slew of
peripherals that thousands of people had, in some cases, hundreds of
dollars invested in. Then Jobs couldn't seem to understand why folks
weren't dumping OS 9 in droves and migrating to OS X. I personally
couldn't wait until I got my Beige G3/333, so that I could finally run
X. I was so hyped to try it after reading all the reviews and seeing
the cool screenshots. Got it installed and booted into X for the first
time, sweet!! Yeah, my floppy drive didn't work anymore, but so what?
The only thing I ever used it for was to install software, and there
was no software for OS X on floppy anyway. No big loss. Then I realized
that I wasn't going to be able to print from X because it didn't see my
serial port. Oops! Didn't know about that. I guess it's back to 9 to
print! Hmm, that means my digital camera isn't going to work anymore
either. Of course iPhoto doesn't support my Agfa camera anyway, so once
again, back to 9! But yet all my old ADB stuff still works under X. If
they can support ADB, why not serial? Answer; they could have if Jobs
had wanted it. Funny thing tho, when Jag came out, and I had installed
it on both G3's, one of my apps that used the serial ports on my
Keyspan adapter on my B&W, was able to see the built-in serial port on
my Beige G3. It couldn't under 10.1. I still haven't quite figured that
one out. Of course my Laserwriter and my camera still wouldn't work.

ATIRageProGA.plugin (2D acceleration) and the GA plug wasn't even

that. The RagePro.kext refers to a non-existant ATIRageProGL.bundle
for OpenGL acceleration. There is no 3D acceleration for the Rage Pro
chips. The 128 Pro is NOT the same as the Rage Pro, but newer and
appeared in the Pismos.

Another fact that is neglected. Apple did not write the ATi drivers
for the ATi chipsets. ATi did, this is true of Classic Mac OS and Mac
OS X. At the time, before the 10.1.5 update was released, people
complained it was Apple not choosing to support it to "force" them to
go buy new Macs. This argument gets brought up a lot, its generally
false although I am sure there are cases when it is true.

Now, regarding video support. It is my understanding from a lot of
reading I have done that the RagePro and RageII chipsets never did
OpenGL under Mac OS 8 or 9, they did RAVE. At the time RAVE and GLIDE
[from 3dfx] were competing and OpenGL was starting to enter the fray.
Since none of us know the exact facts, think about this once and see
if its not reasonable.

Apple sells a Mac, it has a chipset from a third party in it. The
third party includes driver support. Apple puts out new system
software, the third party doesn't update their driver. Its the third
party's fault right? So according to that we should blame ATi.
However, what if the chipset can't do the stuff we want it to do, ie,
what if it can not support OpenGL acceleration. Whose fault is it
then? Apple for embracing OpenGL in OS X? ATi for not making a fully
compliant OpenGL graphics chipset? Sadly, somethings are not anyone's
fault, they just are, and they are often things we don't like.

Is what I just proposed true? We don't know. However, its just as
likely true as the complaints are so it deserves equal consideration.

But Apple does have control where the "serial port issue" was
concerned. And they chose not to write support for the serial port
into the OS. And this was a major issue to a lot of people. Especially
those who had big bucks wrapped up in peripherals (laser printers,
scanners, cameras, modems) that suddenly wouldn't work anymore. Our
only other choice was to trash our serial stuff, buy a USB card and USB
peripherals, and hope they had drivers for X. Look how long it took to
get scanners that would work under X! I personally have a perfectly
good Personal Laserwriter that was only usable on my Beige G3 by going
into Classic and printing what I had done in X. Not exactly user
friendly. Many of us kept hoping against hope that eventually Apple
would "do the right thing", and add serial port support into a revision
at some point so that we would finally be able to use our investment in
peripherals again, but by 10.2, I knew it wasn't going to happen and
bought a B&W and a cheap USB printer. Still, every time I look at that
Laserwriter sitting there collecting dust, I get a frustrated feeling.
Yes, I love Apple too, and OS X, and I would never want to have to go

Kanga won't boot (GLOD?)

2003-08-14 Thread John Acuff
New list-member here with a dead Kanga. I bought this unit non-working.
I had hoped that it was something minor, and maybe I could combine
parts between it and my 3400c to make a good working G3 'Book. I tried
all kinds of different tricks to get it to boot. I did get it to start
to boot once, but it froze at the start-up screen and I have not been
able to repeat. The screen stays black and no chime. I read somewhere
that the power management board may be bad, so I bought one from eBay
that was supposed to be a good one. Since I have installed it, I still
get nothing. The 'Book does not respond at all to the power button on
the keyboard, but if I push the reset button on the back, the green
light on the lid comes on. If I push it again, I hear a click sound and
the light goes off. I have tried leaving out the battery, closing the
lid, and holding the reset button in for 30 seconds, then connecting
the ac adapter and pushing the power button, but still nothing. From
what I can tell, the PRAM battery is okay. I can pull the main battery
and disconnect the ac adapter and the green light on the lid will stay
on. I know the adapter is good, because I am using it with my 3400c.
I really would love to get this machine working so I can finally step
up to a G3 'Book, but I already have almost $200 invested as well as
lots of time trying to figure it out. Maybe I should just cut my
losses, and sell it for whatever I can get and use the proceeds to buy
a clamshell iBook?
I'm hoping someone might be able to give me some idea where to go from
here.
Thanks!
John
