If you click on that it will open another dialog box with spaces for what modem to use and what phone number to dial. If you have a phone line connected to your modem port it will dial and send a fax on that phone line. to receive faxes you go into the system preferences to the print and fax panel and tell your computer to receive the incoming fax. It's pretty cool because you can send the fax do be saved as a file or printed or both. That's all with Tiger. Re: iBook vs. PB etc.
On Jan 2, 2005, at 8:13 AM, Aase Marit Waage wrote: Hi all, I am new on this list... Just what I needed right now... :) I have had different Power Books since my very first one back in 1992. Right now I have a Pismo, one of the few ones with a bronze keyboard and FireWire, it is a 400Mhz G3, running sys 9.2. It is getting on my nerves now though, because it is too slow, I don't have enough memory, have to re-boot often etc. I see that it is time to get a new one. I can't afford buying a brand new one though... I live in Norway, but have found some used iBooks and PB's in Denmark, which is not that far, quite cheaply I can either travel there by ferry to meet a seller or have a person I know get one for me. I have found some options, some iBooks and some PB's. I am a bit in doubt though, of which one to choose, and I don't have much time, or some offers will be gone real soon, maybe even later today... I can't figure out what is really the difference between a PB and and iBook, maybe it doesn't matter for me which one I choose. One I can get, at a price that seems real OK (at least compared to the prices here in Norway) is a 12 iBook. The add says: G4, 1Ghz, new April 04, 768 MB RAM, 60 GB HD, Airport Extreme, OSX 10.3.6 (incl. Garageband and naturally all the others -- doesn't mean a thing to me), DVD/CD-RW. AV-cable for use with projector, TV or similar. My use is primarily home use. I have a disability, so a laptop I can use in my recliner is my best bet. I use it a lot for writing, do a little bit of web design (just on a hobby basis), lots of web surfing, e-mail etc. I just want something that brings me up to OS X, that won't make me re-boot all the time, that has enough memory for my use, that is quick enough, and preferably with a CD-burner so I can download and burn music CD's too. I would really appreciate any real quick input on this. Do you think this one is a good choice for my use? What is really the difference between iBooks and PB's, does it really matter which one for my use? One more thing. This one has a Danish keyboard, which might be slightly different from the Norwegian one. It has the exact same characters, but a couple of them is placed differently. Can you change such things? By defining the keyboard differently and maybe switching around the key's? The price for this one is around $1,100 or something like that, but I have seen prices for the same here in Norway that are a lot higher, so it should be a good deal for me. Also with this one it would be lighter for me, so it would be more easy to take with me when I travel, something I don't do with the one I have now, it is too big and heavy. The bad news is the smaller screen, but... Thank you so much, I appreciate it a lot!!! -Aase :) It sounds like the iBook you mentioned will fit your needs. Some of the differences between iBooks and Powerbooks are: - powerbooks generally have higher screen resolution. (excluding the 12) - powerbooks have a PC card slot. (excluding the 12) - powerbooks have a higher ram capacity, faster video cards, bigger caches, more and faster inputs and outputs, larger stock hard drives, built in screen spanning, etc. I have no clue as to wether you can or how you would go about changing the keyboard. 700MHz iBook G3 640MB Ram OS 10.3.7 Laugha while you can monkeyboy. I definitely want to stick with a 12 'book. I hope you get some good answers because I'm considering the same upgrade on my 12 G3. The price really isn't that bad considering that it is the only way possible to get a superdrive in a 12 iBook (not an option from Apple). 700MHz iBook G3 640MB Ram OS 10.2.8 Laugha while you can monkeyboy. When I was working for an ISP company earlier, we learnt the lesson very quickly and ALWAYS informed customers about the realistic speeds they would get from a given connection... otherwise things got rather nasty rather quick. Maybe in your country, but it appears companies in the U.S. love to put some 'weasel words' (like 'up to...') in their descriptions, and figure that's enough to ward off any lawsuits (maybe their legal depts. told them?). I've had troubles with SBC/Yahoo, especially over the past several months (have been with them since Oct. 2003) where the connection is flaky. For example, Internet Connect will say the connection was terminated for lack of activity, when I'm not actively browsing or sending email or downloading. Or, I'll try to send an email out (with Internet Connect's window open to watch the activity) and I see the initial (contact/request to the ISP's mail server?) sent out and apparently acknowledged, and then the connection just sits... until it times out. And on downloads I have seen the rate fluctuate - a lot! (even down to single digit Meg. rates) So your experience may be satisfactory, but not everyone else's has been. Part of the reason I am NOT guaranteeing that I will stay with SBC/Yahoo when my initial agreement runs out in Oct. 2004. YMMV. Because wifi systems can only go as fast as the slowest system connecting I would buy a cheap Linksys 802.11b wireless router and access point. With the Ti powerbook and the Lombard I would get a third party 802.11b card for the PCMCIA slot. The Ti book can use apples airport but were plagued with bad wifi reception. With the iBook, I would just get an airport card. With the iMac you have two option, you can either just plug it into the router or you can pay more money and get an airport card for it. This card requires an Airport slot to work. The Pismo only has a PCMCIA slot. To my knowledge, a genuine Apple Airport card will NOT work in this slot as the pinout on the Apple Airport card is different (and unique to Apple). You will need to purchase a standard PCMCIA 802.11b wireless card for your Pismo, so you will need to research what cards are going to work for you and whatever OS you are using on your computer. Just thought that I'd clear up the terminology a bit, as it can make a difference when you are buying hardware. Aside from Apple loyalty, and the cool factor, which may be negligent as the router is often in a place where the casual visitor to your home may not see it and therefor not be impressed by your cool factor, is there a compelling technical factor for using an Airport over any of the other good products on the market ? I have been a rabid Mac user since 1985 and love the look and feel of the products and how they work, and work, and work! Thanks Jim. As far as routers go, the only reason to get the Apple base station is that it is easier to set WEP. Personally I use a Linksys router/access point without any problems. In my house we have a mixture of Mac and Win machines so setting WEP is a little more tricky so I just leave my network unencrypted. Free is good, but I'm not against paying for something that's a better alternative. So, what's your favorite MacOSX app/utility/whatnot? Re: Clamshell Original: Need Help to Install CD-ROM Drive
On Friday, April 23, 2004, at 09:53 PM, RK Rossi wrote: New to this group but not lowendmac lists. I have an iBook Clamshell with a CD-ROM drive which no longer accepts CDs. I need a replacement drive and then instructions on how to do it. I feel confident enough that I could do it on my own [learned how to take apart an 8500 over the telephone]. Also it currently has OS X 10.2.x but I would like to go back to OS 9.1. The reason: I have a software issue. So can I just insert an OS 9.1 disk? Or is there one specifically for the iBook? Thanks for any help. - RK Rossi Here is a link to a sight that has the parts that you need. Since your going to be inside anyway you might want to consider upgrading to a CD/RW or a DVD ROM. http://www.wegenermedia.com/ibookp.htm 700MHz iBook G3 640MB Ram OS 10.2.8 Laugha while you can monkeyboy.
