Re: DVD.app error
OSX isn't supposed to run on Wallstreets either, but many people do run it successfully. According to Apples specs, it (Lombard) is designed to support OSX: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=43120 Not Tiger, because of the firewire, but still. That message seemed like some kind of configuration error, like perhaps there might be a file that I can edit? My Lombard came with DVD drive in it, when I bought it used. My Pismo has a DVD and it works fine, I didn't think there was that much of a difference between the two other than the firewire. == Rad Craig, Induction Concepts, High Performance Twin Turbo Systems http://www.inductionconcepts.com [EMAIL PROTECTED] 918.825.TWIN == On Jun 10, 2005, at 10:26 PM, themacuser wrote: Lombards don't support DVD Player according to Apple. CD not recognized/mounted after 10.4
I upgraded my Pismo w/ Tiger and also also did a fresh install on a Lombard (via putting hd in my Pismo). After installtion, I tried to put a CD in the drive to install some other software and it won't recognize that there is a CD in the drive or mount the drive. Same thing happens on both the Pismo and Lombard. If I put the Tiger DVD in the drive and reboot, it will recognize that DVD when it first boots, but if I take it out, put a different CD in the drive, it won't recognize the CD. I can take the CD out, put the Tiger DVD back in the drive and it will no longer recognize it. I tried resetting the NVRAM, no luck. I have tried swapping CD/DVD drives between the two laptops. The one in my Pismo is just a normal CD/DVD-ROM, the one in the Lombard is a 2x DVD, according to the writing on the bottom. Neither one is a burner. Seems strange to me that the Lombard would appear to have a faster DVD-ROM in it than the Pismo? The drive in the Lombard makes loud crunching, clunking sounds when I insert a CD. Neither will ever mount or recognize in any way that there is a CD in the drive. I have to push the manual eject button to get the CD out and it is spinning at full speed when it ejects. I have tried different CDs and that doesn't seem to make a difference. This only happened when I upgraded to Tiger (on the Pismo), it worked fine on all of the 10.3.x versions. I have all the latest software updates and there aren't any firmware updates for either laptop. I even tried PatchBurn, but it won't work if you don't have a burner. Any ideas? Its getting really frustrating because I can't install any of my other software, which makes the laptop pretty much worthless other than email and browsing, which is not the primary purpose for these machines. Re: OSX 10.3.8 on Pismo?
I did post, a couple of different posts actually and found a link on the net talking about the same problem with no fix, or nothing listed worked. It happened on two different pismos I had. They worked fine on .3.6, but as soon as .3.7 was loaded, it would no longer recognize CDs. Maybe it was specific to a certain batch of Pismos, but it was definitely a problem. Re: CDROM not recognized?
On Dec 24, 2004, at 12:20 PM, Kris Tilford wrote: not posted: You've installed all the firmware updates? I believe there is v. 4.1.8 system firmware update. There 'might' also be a special update for the CDROM unit only? See: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=24714 Also, I have a friend with a Pismo that was attempting to install PPC/Linux and was having CD recognition errors. He replaced the unit and it was fine, so perhaps these units are bad sometimes? Another somewhat bothersome thing that might possibly be the issue. On the BeigeG3 desktop series in OS X you can't boot from any device set as slave. Perhaps this also applies to the Pismo, although I can't see exactly how that applies to this situation where you're getting no recognition at all. You can go to Terminal and type: kextstatReturn and get a full list of all the loaded extensions. If the extension com.apple.iokit.IOCDStorageFamily (1.3.1) isn't listed then the system isn't recognizing or loading the extension for the CDROM unit. If the extension IOCDStorageFamily.kext is listed in the SystemLibraryExtensions folder, and the permissions are good, then you can drag to the trash from the SystemLibrary folder the two files Extensions.kextcache Extensions.mkext and reboot (you'll need admin password to trash these files). This will force the system to reinitialize from a fresh read and hopefully load the CDROM extension. If the extension was loaded correctly to begin with and the unit still doesn't function, I think there's an issue with either the cables or the unit is broken. You could try resetting the NVRAM using the Cmd-Opt-O-F startup keys and then typing: set-defaultsReturn which should reply OK followed by reset-allReturn which should Restart. Perhaps then it is recognized? Thanks for everyone's help on this. This CDROM worked fine before the x.3.7 update. The only CD it would recognize/mount was the x.3 install CD. I have a Pismo myself, that I got at the same time (upgrade from a Wallstreet), so I was setting them both up. Turns out, it hosed them both, not just hers. I tried every fix and suggestion mentioned here, on other lists and macfixit.com. None of them worked unfortunately. So I blew hers away...even though I thought I would never get it to boot off a CD, an OS 9.x recovery CD finally did the trick. Installed 9.2, then 10.3, then I downloaded the 10.3.6 combination update from Apples site, and then all of the other updates except the one for 10.3.7. Everything is purring right along...although I worked on it until 3:15am this morning so it would be ready for her first thing Christmas morning. On mine, I booted off a 10.3 install CD and did an 'archive and install', which yielded the same result, but saved me some configuration time. Same thing, used the 10.3.6 update, along with all other recommended 'software updates' except the 10.3.7. It is also purring happily at this moment as I write this email. Anyway, just in case this helps anyone else. Rad... -- G-Books is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... CDROM not recognized?
I'm setting up a Pismo for my little sis for xmas. I started with a fresh format, installed X.3, did all the software updates and last night went to install some other apps on it and no matter what I put in the CDROM, it wouldn't read the disk, mount it or otherwise recognize that there was a disc in the drive. Might be something simple like a noisy line? Maybe the modems that AOL uses in their local exchange there are a brand that's a little more tolerant of noisy lines? Where her ISP is probably using older modems, like the kind when 56k first came out, they were very picky with this. It's a cheap thing to try at least. You will wrap your phone line around these u-shaped (together they make a circle), magnet-looking things, several times. It will improve the speed by cutting down on noise at the very least, but might also solve your problem. Some phone line noise can't be heard by us, but can be heard by the modem. I've seen these things work personally. When i used to use dial-up (used to own an ISP 10 years ago), I'd never use a modem without one. Install it on the end of your phone line where it plugs into the modem, as close as possible to that port. Back then, those were my only choice, but I just googled and this looks like the thing to get: http://www.ky-filters.com/filters.htm Not to expensive to try, it definitely won't HURT anything, can only make it better. I'd get two, one for home, one to travel with. I didn't look for any others that might be cheaper, just wanted to give you a place to look in the right direction. HTH. OSX 10.3 install fails on disk 2
I got my little sis a Pismo for college, for xmas. I just got it and am installing 10.3 on it. I blew the drive away, formatted OSX extended (journaled) and started from scratch. I unchecked all the languages and printer drivers. Disk 1 finished without problems. I reboot, get promted to insert disk 2 and it gets almost done, to about 9 minutes remaining, then says something like 'errors were encountered during installation' and the button changes to 'quit'. I have done this twice now, with two different Disk #2's and got the same error both times. After the first install, I was doing the software update, which was quite a list, and it hosed up on the last item in the list, which is all the 10.3 updates for OSX (like 97MB). Then it would no longer connect to the internet via ethernet. I restarted twice, repaired disk permissions, but that didn't fix anything. I mounted the disk 2 and ran the install.pkg manually and it finished without problems, but still acted flaky. I tried to reboot on a recovery CD I have, but when I selected it in 'startup disk' and clicked reboot, it would just sit there and never reboot. So I closed startup disk and restarted it via the apple menu, held the 'c' key down during boot, and it ignored it and booted to the HD like normal. So after all these strange things, I decided I'd try it all again, used a different disk 2 cd, but got the same results. This is a Pismo, 400mhz, 11.2G HD, 192MB. Any suggestions? I've got to have this thing all setup for her by xmas eve. Rad... -- G-Books is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... Rad I've never tried infrared but here's another option that works between my Thinkpad 560 and my Lombard. If you've got an 80 Mb PC card (or CF card and adapter) you should be able to write the files to the card on the thinkpad and read the card on the Pismo. If you don't have a card I could loan you one for the transfer. -- Andrew in Ann Arbor Thanks for the generous offer Andrew. I think I'll figure out a way to do it via ethernet, would be easier than messing with the shipping back and fourth and ethernet cards are cheap. I just know that the IR between Windows laptops is very simple, when you're in range, you get an icon in the task bar, select the file and transfer, wala. Was just hoping the OSX IR would work with it so it wouldn't cost me anything (ethernet card). Oh well, still won't cost much. I'm phasing my thinkpad out so my Pismo can be my primary laptop. IR transfer Pismo (OSX) -- Thinkpad (Windows)?
I have an IBM Thinkpad that I have been using previously. I now want to transfer all of my data files (spreadsheets, docs, etc.) onto this Pismo. My FTP server seems to choke before I can get the zip file containing it all (about 60MB) uploaded, I've tried a dozen times now, it never completes and doesn't support resume. OT: Deodorant Theory (formerly Aluminum and Alzheimer's)
Possibly the lack of deodorant and not the garlic is why the vampires don't bother you. on 12/2/04 16:18, Daniel De L'eau at [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Yes, I've known that for 20 years. That's why I don't use deoderant. I eat lots of garlic, too. Haven't seen a vampire in years. Did you know that Aluminum is an active ingredient of Right Guard? I thought it was only me! I can't believe I am sharing this, but maybe it might help others, it's just not something commonly discussed. I have NEVER worn deodorant and I'm 37. I have also never had stinky armpits either. Now, I'm not a tree hugger, about as far as you can get from that, and I am a very clean person. I have my own 'deodorant conspiracy theory'. I think that using deodorant, rubbing those chemicals into your skin, pores and glands, daily (thousands of times in a lifetime), acutally CAUSES the odor to be worse than what would naturally occur. Sure, everyone has a natural 'odor', for instance if you've ever smelled someones head or hair right after vigorous exercise, but it's nothing like the odor of a normal deodorant wearer who goes without it for a day or two and does some exercise. When I was growing up, all my buddies used it, it's just 'what you do' when you go through adolescense, (like shaving, may not actually need to, but it makes you feel older) and they all stank like hell, and I thought, when mine start to smell, I'll start using it then...well, mine never started to smell like that. Sure I get sweaty, but I don't reak, just the natural 'odor' like your head/hair has...and you can't put deodorant on your head...well, I guess you could. ;) I have only told a couple of close friends about this, and my wife of course, and have made sure I asked them if they have EVER smelled any odors from me and they said 'of course not'...then I told them I had never worn it. I think using it, actually causes odor, or makes it much worse, so you keep using it...a viscious cycle. Now, I don't think you can just stop using it, if you have used it for 10+ years and expect not to smell...I have no idea if that would eventually pass, or if some permanent change has already happened to the glands/pores/whetever-dermis. All I know is that it works for me probably because I have never used it. I have a 10 year old son and have already told him my thoughts on it...of course if he starts 'smelling', I will of course tell him to start using it. He is athletic, as I was/is. Anyway...just wanted to propose the idea. And I don't eat any garlic other than whats normally in food. Rad... -- G-Books is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... Any ideas of what could be the problem with this so that I might find a replacement part for the bad component? Rad... -- G-Books is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... Software Update can't connect
I just wiped out my Wallstreet, did a fresh install of 9.2.1, then a fresh install of panther using XPF 3.0.b1. Everything ran like clockwork. It is up and running, I'm using it now, but when I go to Software Update, it says that Software Update can't connect to the update server. But I can send/receive email and access the web just fine. Do you think maybe Apples update server is down or is there some problem with my laptop? Rad... -- G-Books is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... How to re-install OS 9.x, then 10.3 on a Wallstreet?
I'm still a mac newb, but learning. I finally got my Wallstreet upgraded from OS 10.2.8 to 10.3, but now half the stuff doesn't work, applications won't load, etc. So I bought a copy of OS 9.2 and it should be here to morrow. What I want to do is wipe the drive out and start scratch, but I've never installed two OS's on a mac before, only panther from scratch. I've seen talk about partition sizes, which os should be first, etc., but I don't know the specifics. Can someone give me a checklist of the steps to perform...with a little detail if possible. For instance, how do I format the drive, will I be asked that during the OS 9.x installation? I mean I need to blow away the partitions, create new partitions and reformat. From where do I do this? I know this stuff backwards and forwards in windoze, but haven't done it yet in Mac. Can OS 9.x delete a partition created by 10.x? How big do I need to make the 9.x partition, I only want the mininum as I will only use it to boot into in order to repair the 10.x partition, etc. Plus I need it in order to run XPF to get panther to load in the first place. Thanks in advance for any help to get me pointed in the right direction so I can get this laptop lined out finally. Rad... -- G-Books is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... Carbon Copy Cloner? (Was Wallstreet Disk Problems)
Ok, I have a copy of Carbon Copy Cloner now. I looked in the preferences and I¹m not sure what I need to set. I want to make a clone of my hd on this laptop and save it across the network to a Windoze 2000 Server. What settings do I need to check/uncheck to do this and then be able to restore it back to this machine if something goes wrong and I can¹t get Panther to install fresh? Also, how can I make a copy that will allow this laptop to be network bootable if I might have problems at some point and need to boot off of that version? How does all that work? Sorry for the questions, I¹m still a mac newb. I could read through the help files for an hour and still possibly get it wrong, or ask someone who¹s done it and knows how to do it right. Wallstreet disk problems
I have a Wallstreet with 10.2.8 on it. I have tried and tried to get 10.3 to install, but it won't. I have tried XPF .15, .16, and .17, none of which have worked. I was told to try .14, but I haven't been able to find it, anyone have a copy? Anyway, it has been locking up frequently recently, like several times in an evening. I have run disk utility and it finds and fixes some errors, or at least it says it does, but when I run it again, they are still there. I have Disk Warrior 3 and when I try to reboot to that CD, the computer locks up on me, at the gray Apple screen with the spinning (lines) cursor. Doesn't matter if I put the CD in the drive and restart, press c, or select that CD from the startup disk utility. In the startup disk util, I noticed that it said something about Disk Warrior with OS X 10.2.3 or 10.2.5, don¹t' remember, I just remember that it was a different version than what is on the HD which is why I noticed it. I have also tried to boot off of this CD on my QuickSilver and it also locks up on the reboot. I really need to get this resolved ASAP. Do you have any suggestions? Thanks in advance. That sounds like a hard disk problem. You shouldn't worry too much about the slightly different version of OS X that comes with DiskWarrior. They put whatever was current when they burned the CD, plus they probably did some testing under that version. If the CD locks up at the same point on the 2 machines, then it seems as if the CD was damaged or scratched. Have you been able to boot those 2 Macintosh with that exact CD in the past? Have you try to boot from the OS X install CD and run DiskUtility from there? -Laurent. -- G-Books is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... Wallstreet disk problems
I got my first mac laptop a month or two ago, a Wallstreet. It now has 10.2.8 on it and has been locking up a lot recently. I have Disk Warrior, when I put it in the drive and restart, it locks up at the apple screen and spinning circle (lines). Same thing if I put the Disk Warrior CD in the drive and run the startup disk utility, locks up on reboot. It says Disk Warrior with 10.2.3 (I think, or 10.2.5?), I just noticed that it was a different version than what my laptop is running. I¹ve tried to update to 10.3 with XPF .15, .16 and .17. Someone recommended for me to try .14, but I haven¹t been able to find it. When I run disk utility, it finds problems, says it fixes them, but when I run it again, they are always still there. Can someone help please? I also tried to boot off of this DW CD in my QS desktop and it locked up also, but with the screen that says ³you need to restart your computer² (black background, white text). So is it the DW CD? Wallstreet going blank
I have a 292mhz Wallstreet. Occasionally, the screen just goes blank...and I don't mean sleeping. When its sleeping, the little power light flashes, but when it does this, the power light doesn't flash. When it does this, I can't get it to come back on (the screen), but I know things are going on as it still makes all the sounds and such. I used to do a forced reset, but today I pressed the power button once, heard the hard drive rattle, so I was assuming it was the 'are you sure you want to shutdown' message, hit the left arrow key and then enter and it did in fact shut down, so at least I don't have to hard reset it anymore. Anyway, does anyone know what causes this, for the screen to just go blank and not come back? After it reboots, it's fine. But it seems to do this about every other day and is kind of annoying. Sometimes it's after I have closed it and it goes to sleep, then later I will open it up, hit the spacebar and nothing...sometimes it works fine and wakes up. Today, I had just woken it up from sleep, looked away for a minute, looked back and it was blank again...hit the spacebar, nothing. Any ideas or suggestions? I'm running OS X.2.8. With 512Mb RAM. Re: Latest version of OSX for wallstreet/beige g3?
I have a wallstreet 292 and haven't been able to get panther installed, using a15 or a16. I will either get the 'this computer is not compatible' or whatever that message is, or a circle with a line thought it when it reboots. I REALLY want panther on here. I've got 10.2.8 right now and it seems to work OK except for some occasional freezing. That's what I don't understand, 2.8 works, but 3.x won't. Any suggestions? I've tried all the 'safest' config options of XPF, but it never seems to make any difference. I've tried it from OS9.2 and 10.2.8. Rad... Could someone recommend a particular version for me please? I've had absolutely great results with XPF 3a14 and Panther on a Powerbook G3 266. I'm not sure if the internal videocard works in the beige yet, so you might have to use a separate PCI videocard with a suitable driver. However, the PCMCIA slot and system sleep isn't supposed to work in my model, but it does with Panther. Audio in doesn't work in my powerbook, however. It just crackles. Audio out is fine. The XPF documentation didn't make it clear for me how XPF is used. I understand that it is used during the installation process, but does it run everytime you use OSX as well? Yes, it modifes the system to some extent and even add some tailored code and brings back some older system parts that is compatible with older hardware. I've had very little OS problems that I know of since I installed Panther and XPF 3a14. I preferred a9 over a11 before. The documentation mentions using XPF to select OSX as your startup when switching back from OS9 as a startup disk. Before reading that I thought XPF was only used for the initial installation. It's transparent for the user post installation that it is used all the time, but for switching from OS 9, you have to use it because OS 9s startup disk will crash, due to modifications to NvRAM I think. For switching to OS 9 it may help by blessing the OS 9 system folder, making it bootable again. That it can get unblessed under certain circumstances is a panther thing I believe. -- G-Books is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... I had the same one you had initially, worked about 2 weeks and died, they replaced it. It worked sporadically for the last year, needing to be powered off and back on frequently to keep it working. Then it finally died completely, just out of warranty. That's when I got the USR. I have used USR modems for nearly 15 years, back when 2400 was fast. They have always made outstanding products and this one is no different. Plug'd it in, config'd it and haven't had to mess with it since...the way a router should be. When I started having trouble with it and after a couple of weeks off and on with tech support (in India; I had to ask them to repeat themselves several times each time they said something, since I had so much trouble understanding their accent and they tended to talk very fast), SMC said they'd replace the unit. I had looked at their web site and found their newer SMC2804WBR (802.11g) model, and asked how much they'd charge me to upgrade to that model. They gave it to me for free. It's worked fine after initial setup. The only thing I had trouble with was setting up WEP. I did it once, then tried again (after finding out that my old clamshell iBook SE 366 could only use the lower-level WEP, while my Aluminum 15 PowerBook G4 could use 128-bit) and couldn't get it to work. I put the router high on the wall in the center of my old house that has a lot of wire mesh in the lath. My range from the Asante router to my tiBook is in excess of 250 feet outdoors. I have the same situation with stucco exterior walls. I've got one location inside the house that goes through two exterior walls to get to the router. I originally used a SMC Barricade wireless router which wouldn't work through those walls. The Belkin router I have now does work to that location. I bought a D-Link 614+ wireless router here in my office and it works fine for some things, but it does not support appletalk packets. If you buy a D-Link product, better check this out. They sometimes say they are Mac compatible (and they are at the TCP-IP level) but you have to read the fine print to see which of their products support Appletalk---if you have old machines or printers and need it. Neither of the routers I bought support AppleTalk although IIRC they both claim to. The SMC almost did, it would pass the Zone info but I couldn't access anything. The Belkin seems to only support on the LAN which pretty much any of them will. You have to be careful when checking for that issue. For print servers, many of the old Asante routers have a print server port that used to only work with Windows or Postscript Printers, but now it works with OSX.3. on some other printers--depending on the driver and whether the printer has a parallel port. I just set up an HP 5850. Re: Airport Alteratives
I have a mixed (PC/Mac) network with a US Robotics 802.11g Turbo Wireless router (100Mb's). I have a US Robotics 802.11g PCMCIA wireless card in a Thinkpad, a TrendNet PCMCIA card (802.11b) in a Compaq laptop and an Aria Extreme PCI 802.11g card in my QuickSilver and they all work great together. I just got my first mac laptop (Wallstreet) and will be purchasing an Aria Extreme PCMCIA card for it. Re: Wallstreet max ram?
That sucks, I can't believe they limited it to that, I would have thought at least 1GB. Thanks for the info.
