Yes I also have a 128 chip that came with the machine. Funny, I tried the
test cd once and no probs were found. However, I reseat the bad ram, zap the
pram and nv-ram and the computer will recognize the 512 chip ok for a few
hours, then I get a VERY hard freeze, (needing the reset button on the back
of the pismo) I restart, and the 512 magically becomes 256 again.

I have had so many problems with my wonderful machine, that I hope I need a
motherboard replacement. Just think how bad it would be if this Pismo didn't
just sit on a table its whole life!

Pismo ram fit in 500mhz iBook?

2003-03-03 Thread Ryan Stewart
Will the ram from my Pismo fit in a friends 500mhz ibook? I think the ram is
"high profile" so that could be a problem. I just need to fit it in for a
minute as I need to test if the ram is faulty. The ram is showing up as 256
on my computer and I get the dialog in os9 boot: "Built in memory test
failed. Contact service technician."

It is a 512mb (PC100? 2-2-2) Chip. I have latest firmware (4.1.8f5) The ram
worked fine for 2 years, until last week when I used my s-video port for the
first time. It has lifetime warrantee, but I don't want to send it in unless
it is really the ram!

Thanks all,
Ryan

"Get Info" on your tiff file (apple i), click the "Open With: " triangle,
click the pull down and select "Other..." now find OmniPage. Then click the
"Change All" button if you want all .tiff files to be opened with Omnipage.

Clear as mud :) ?

I have trouble believing that you simply transferred a HD from a Beige G3 to
your Wallstreet! they are totally different connectors. There are adaptors
out there, but it doesn't sound like you have one.

You need a 2.5 inch hard drive for your wallstreeet, not a bigger desktop

Multiple users under 9.2.2 is kind of a childs toy of security compaired to

Well if you are planning on trying to use the drive again after opening it,
you need a $500,000 "clean room" where there is very little particulates
(dust) to contaminate the drive. If you are opening a drive just to see the
platters and never use it again, use a screwdriver with a star shaped key
and a hammer

Re: Pismo dvd drive/was Re: Playing CD's

2003-02-27 Thread Ryan Stewart
I can guarantee that this is a Mashita (or Matsushita) because of the
SR-8174 in there. That is the Mashita model number, where the dying LGs
number is LG-8080B. You might have good luck with that drive (but no
guarantee =)

I think a 9.5mm height drive will be no problem because the drives are
secured by screws on the _side_ of the drive (?) and there are rubber
grommets to keep it from sloshing around.

Let me know how this DVD turns out for you. I am in Europe as well.

Oh let me count the ways:

(Day.month.year)

Computer purchased on 12.1.2001

27.4.2001 Battery will not hold charge. Replaced
5.11.2001 LG-8080B (DVD) stopped mounting DVDs, CDs shortly after. Replaced
13.8.2002 Battery will not hold charge. Replaced along with non-faulty cord
17.12.2002 During my applecare call I stated that the Batt wouldn't hold a
charge AND stopped reading DVD/CDs. Applecare said "I will have the tech
look at the motherboard". BATTERY REPLACED ONLY
03.01.2003 DVD still broke from before, sent it in again. DVD Replaced

3 battery replacements, 2 DVD replacements

20.2.2003 I used the S-Video out (for the first time) and my 512 Dimm turned
into a 256 Dimm. Reseating the DIMM and zapping PRAM fixes it for a few
hours, until it freezes hard. OS9 Boot says "Built in memory tests failed.
Contact service technician." The ram was problem free for 1.5 years with
latest firmware and running 10.2.1 now.

Once I tried my battery that wouldn't hold a charge in a friends Pismo. The
batt Worked fine. I think I will make a personal appearance with my repair
history at an applestore this summer. The problem is that my repairs have
been made in Europe and America, so my entire repair history isn't on the
applecare computers (I am guessing).

Here is the DVD thread at apple:

One of the threads even has a possible hardware fix:

I treat my computer like a porcelain doll. I rarely travel with it. It is
more of a small desktop machine to me. I'm lucky (?) and have applecare
until January 2004.

Thanks for listening everybody,

LOL, That's it! thanks for doing my homework Tom! =)

I would like to keep this thread very active as lots of people have Pismo
(firwire 2000) laptops. If apple is making an exchange program for the
"Windtunnel" powermacs perhaps if we make noise, this widespread problem
will be solved. I love my Pismo, I just wish it didn't have so many

Actually, I think it _is_ a problem with the brand of drive. My LG has
failed twice, and both times it has been replaced by a LG. Once my Battery
died at the same time. At least I have Applecare till Jan. '03. You can try
and beg for a Matsushita (or Matshita) SR-8174, but I tried from the
Applecare-Europe folks and they wouldn't do it. I am going to go to an
applestore with a printed list in my hand of how many times the battery and
LG drive has been replaced on my book. Apple thinks they are saving money by
not replacing my motherboard, but I think that might be the only cure to the
problem.

I have also heard success at using a PC DVD/CD-R in the old casing of the
failed drive. I could find the web info (http://www.xlr8yourmac.com/) if
anyone wants it.

Good luck,
Ryan

Laurent I am guessing (and only guessing) that you need the divx (if that is
what you are opening) decoder:

Another player is "Mplayer". Mplayer will play your multiple movies like a
cd changer. I find that Mplayer uses less cpu than VLC. YMMV

Your battery is a Li-ion (Lithium Ion) so the best way to maintain it is to
simply keep it charged (just keep the computer plugged in when possible).
There is no need to discharge the batt.

In regards to the control strip, that is simply a software guesstimate. The
most accurate reading is pushing the little button on the batt. itself. Not
very precise, but that is the way it goes. You should get over 2 hours with
light computing and no CD/DVD use.

There is a cool batt. Voltage software out there called "MyBattery". Look
for it on or unfortunately it
only runs in OS9 or earlier.

Have fun,
Ryan

Pismo DVD/CD failure (LG-8080B)

2002-12-12 Thread Ryan Stewart
I am sending my Pismo in for repairs for the third time because of the DVD
drive or battery failing. This time they showed some concern about it being
repaired multiple times.

Is there anyone out there who has a success story where the DVD failed (the
LG kind) and was repaired/replaced by apple and hasn't failed again? Perhaps
replaced with a Matshita?

This issue is almost two years old, so I am hoping that a solution has been
found. When my batt and DVD fail at the same time, I know that replacing
them isn't going to help. Expecially when they work fine in other Pismo
books!

At least my applecare is good until Jan 2004
Thanks,
Ryan

Re: Pismo DVD/CD drive death...

2002-11-16 Thread Ryan Stewart
I don't know if this is true that it is only the DVD module that fails. My
LG 8080 DVD is now dead for the second time, and my battery is dead for the
third time. *BUT this time the two died at the same time* In the
previous repairs, apple has just replaced the modules, obviously this is
only a short (2 month?) term fixit. I think it is a complex problem
involving the motherboard and module, as the folks with the Mashita DVD
drives have a lot less problems.

My applecare is good until Jan 2004 thank goodness!

I know I have seen some software that does this. It used to be bundled with

It might only run in one os (9 or X). Sorry I don't know the name. Another
idea is to mount an external monitor in your van and then you can plug it

Ms-dos format?

2002-08-15 Thread Ryan Stewart

So I just broke down and bought a new 80gig external for my Pismo. I want to
format half of the drive so it is readable on a PeeCee. Why is erase as
ms-dos missing from os 9.2.2 and the disk util in OSX? Is it something with
the File Exchange control panel in OS9? Help..

Re: switching off computer

2002-07-01 Thread Ryan Stewart

In OSX I am pretty sure that the system run some maintenance and clean up
routines in the wee hours of the morning. If you turn your computer off,
these routines aren't run. There are shareware apps to make this happen when
the user wants them to.

Here in the EU (European Union) almost all of the power lines are
underground. In the USA, almost all of the power lines are above ground. I
will let the reader decide which costs more to install and is better for our
computers health! Obviously underground wiring is impractical when there is
urban sprawl =)

Regarding the fan never turning on inside Pismos, it seems to only happen
with mine when I have an external monitor, AND the laptop lid is closed AND
I am watching a DVD. I used to think my fan was broke too!

Re: Difficulty in setting up intranet

2002-04-21 Thread Ryan Stewart

In on the iMac (the one without the ip address) open the tcp/ip control
panel, click "options" and uncheck the "Load only when needed" box. This
should fix ya up! You can do this with the other mac as well if you have
this problem.

If you are using a crossover cable or a hub. It is good to keep this
unchecked.

Re: Wallstreet/OS X : PCMCIA

2002-04-20 Thread Ryan Stewart

I have a Pismo and my compact flash card mounts perfectly. You must be
running at least OSX version 10.1 or later. In versions 10.0.4 and earlier,
it wouldn't mount. The driver for mounting is built into the OS.

I don't know about the DVD, or other specialty cards in your Wallstreet, but
I would think your SmartMedia should mount if you are running 10.1.3 or
later. Perhaps someone with a Wallstreet and a SmartMedia card could shed
some light.
