Re: ITunes 6 on Pismo 400mhz?

2005-10-14 Thread Sam
Thanks everyone for the heads ups. I DL'd to my Pismo 400Mhz, and while
iTunes 6 works just fine, playing video previews or streams is horrible.

I'm running Quicktime 7.0.3 (and OS 10.4.2) on a 7Mbps-download internet
connection, and I'm lucky if I get a tenth of a second of moving picture
here and there, even though the sound's playing just fine.

What's everyone else finding?

ITunes 6 on Pismo 400mhz?

I see the iTunes 6 requirements state a 500Mhz G3. Has anyone gotten it

Sync Mac to iDen/Nextel phones?

2005-10-03 Thread Sam
Does anyone have any tips for syncing contacts from Entourage or Apple Mail
to the phone book of a Nextel iDen phone? I'm specifically using a Motorola
i850 and a Pismo running OS 10.4.2.

Motorola has a Windows-based iDen phonebook manager which will download the
phonebook, and that file can be opened up in MS Access which invites some
CSV file opportunities, but there is some coding in the phonebook file that
I'm not sure what to do with.

Even if there's something to sync from Windows Outlook or Outlook Express to
the iDen phone - I can deal with that if I have to. (Mac to Windows to
phone.)

Any tips, experience or pointers to sources of info would be most
appreciated.

Moto i850 to PowerBook?

2005-08-12 Thread Sam
I'm an OS X verteran but a cell phone address book-syncing newbie. I have a
Motorola i850 (Nextel, no bluetooth) and would like to sync my address book
from the Mac (Pismo, OS 10.4.2) to the phone. I've seen a USB adapter for
the phone, but Apple's iSync web page doesn't list the "I" series phones.

Has anyone tried this? Or does anyone know of any cell phone websites with
good Mac info? I tried MacOSXHints and many Googles but came up empty. Or
another forum to which this is better suited? (since even though I'm using a
Pismo it's not technically a Gbook question...)

Thanks much -
Sam

Re: iLife Installation Problem

2005-05-01 Thread Sam Strong
Herb -

I ran into this problem when trying to install iPhoto 4 myself and it took
me a good while to figure it out. If you go to the utilities folder and
open Activity Monitor you'll find that an application called "iTunes Helper"
is running. Kill this and you should be able to proceed with the iLife
program install. At least that's what worked for me. Not that I have any
idea what iTunes Helper is nor did I install any such thing. Hope this
helps!

Julie -

Heat doesn't seem to be an issue with the Hitachi 7200rpm drive. My Pismo
isn't noticeably hotter, nor does the fan ever come on.

For me, the increase in performance was completely worth the upgrade. I've

Wireless Driver Needed

2004-09-30 Thread Sam Strong
Hi All -

We ordered two of the Roamabout Wireless cards from Wegener Media and now my
wife can't locate the install CD that we used to install the drivers on her
PISMO and I'm trying to put a card into a Wallstreet here in my classroom.
Of course her Pismo is running OS X and the Wallstreet OS 9 so she can't
just copy the driver from her HD and e-mail it to me and they don't seem to
be downloadable from Wegener's site. So does anyone have a copy of the OS 9
drivers for this card that they would be willing to e-mail to me sometime
very soon? I assure everyone that we have bought and paid for the cards in
a legitimate and upfront manner. No doubt she will find the CD as soon as I
get the drivers anyway! Thanks in advance for your help.

Actually I just bought two of the orinoco cards from Wegener last week and
they do now come with OS X drivers for free. Popped one card into my wife's
pismo and one into a friends titanium/500mhz, loaded the drivers, and they
were on the airport network at restart. We're still working out some
network printing issues, but as far as web access and e-mail no problems.

Re: Using wireless PC card in Pismo

2004-08-18 Thread Sam
Of course it would. But "OS X" has at least 15 different versions. I still
want to know what OS Jeff is running since, from the Sourceforge page, it
indicates the following.

" The latest installer for OS X 10.2 (version 1.0.0b5) is now available! "

My understanding is that the driver then went to a paid version at IOExperts
which now stands at v1.0.3.

I have one positive response that indicated 1.0.0b5 works fine w/ 10.3.4;
looking for other opinions and/or confirmations especially for 10.3.5.

Re: Using wireless PC card in Pismo

2004-08-16 Thread Sam
Anyone know of any alternative drivers for wireless PC cards? IOExperts'
seems to be slick and work well, but unless I find a reasonably priced
original Airport card, I'll likely be switching cards and really don't feel
like shelling out an extra $20 for each card I choose to put in my
Powerbook. If it was $20 for unlimited external cards on their supported
list, it would be a no-brainer, but I really don't like their $20 per card
license.

Has anyone tried the free Sourceforge driver (for OS 10.2) with OS 10.3.x?

Using wireless PC card in Pismo

2004-08-02 Thread Sam
What's the trick to getting my Pismo (OS 10.3.4) to use a Lucent WaveLan
Silver PC card? Do I need to remove the internal Airport card, or do I need
a different driver?

Same WaveLan worked with stock Apple Airport software on a Pbook 3400
running OS 9.

Thanks -

Airport card problems

2004-07-27 Thread Sam
I have a Pismo running OS 10.3.4 and an original aiport card connecting to a
graphite Airport base station.

All was well for a long, long time until yesterday, when the card did not
reconnect coming out of sleep. After some fiddling, the menu bar icon got a
full signal and it was fine for the day.

Today, same thing - it slept overnight and now will not see the base
station. No signal.

I tried:

- testing the base station w/ another PC - works fine.
- turning the card off/on.
- re-seating the card
- ditching the prefs.
- Apple System Profiler sees the card.

Any suggestions?

-Sam

Re: Help with Wallstreet PMU

2004-05-03 Thread Sam Strong
Hi All -

For those who might be interested here's an update on the Wallstreet
problems that I was having. After much taking apart and investigating I am
pretty certain that the problem is the PMU. It display's the same symptoms
with or without the processor card in so I don't think that it's even
getting to that point. So I'll be getting a PMU (look for my SWAP list post
in a few moments) and trying that next. Thanks to all who responded both on
and off list for their help and suggestions.

Original message partly follows:

>Specifically the symptoms of the Wallstreet are: Screen stays black, no
>battery charge indication on the little lights on the side, no HD noise, no
>chime, etc. Pressing the reset sequence written on the back results in the
>PB alternating between the fan running at full speed with the green power

>dead. Pressing the power button alone has not effect. I have removed the
>battery and held down the reset sequence for a couple of minutes with no

Help with Wallstreet PMU

2004-05-01 Thread Sam Strong
Morning all -

I have a teacher friend who lost (as in they stopped working) three laptops
in a 24hr period (see aside below for details). Needless to say he is not
a happy camper. I am trying to fix his Wallstreet so that he has something
to work on and from its' symptoms I believe that the PMU needs to be reset,
but pressing the reset combination written on the back doesn't seem to be
working. Could someone send me specific instructions? It would be much
appreciated. Or if you read the next paragraph with the specific symptoms
and have another idea, please let me know that too.

Specifically the symptoms of the Wallstreet are: Screen stays black, no
battery charge indication on the little lights on the side, no HD noise, no
chime, etc. Pressing the reset sequence written on the back results in the
PB alternating between the fan running at full speed with the green power
light on and, after pressing, the powerbook sitting there appearing totally
dead. Pressing the power button alone has not effect. I have removed the
battery and held down the reset sequence for a couple of minutes with no
effect other than that mentioned above. Any other ideas appreciated.

Aside: Three down, none to go. Computed #1 is an iBook that is covered
under Apple's recall program. The screen failed as is covered and I was
able to start it up in Firewire target disk mode and transfer his data to
comptuer # 2 - the Wallstreet mentioned above which worked for less than
24hrs. Apple is sending a box for the iBook which will be here on Monday.
Computer #3 is another iBook that we borrowed for his use from a lab cart of
ibooks at school (yes, with permission). Although we weren't able to get
his data off the Wallstreet, he was using this quite successfully until a
student tripped over the cord running from his desk and it slammed to the
floor. Now it's both dead and broken. Needless to say he isn't allowed to
borrow any more computers. Sorry for the length of this post, but I though
folks might be interested in the story and I could really use some help with
the Wallstreet. Thanks!

Used Mac prices?

2004-04-08 Thread Sam
A couple of years back, there was a website where I could check the
approximate value of a used Mac. I can't seem to find that site - I thought
it was United Computer Exchange, but that looks like an auction site now.
Current eBay auctions give an approximation, but I'm looking for better.

Anybody know a "Kelley BlueBook"-type site for computers?

Re: 60GB 7200RPM or 80GB 5400RPM

2004-04-01 Thread Sam
I dug up and read a lot of reviews of each along with head-to-head
comparisons of both. Both drives are pretty much leading the 2.5" field,
along with a Seagate model of smaller capacity (exact model escapes me).
Most tests show that the 7200RPM spindle speed alone gives about a 20-30%
performance increase over a 5400RPM drive. Basically, the IBM/Hitachi 60GB
7200rpm and 80GB 5400rpm have nearly identical stats; the chief difference
is the spindle speed which gives the performance boost.

In other words, if you exclude the 7200rpm drive, the 80GB 5400rpm is
arguably the leading notebook drive today, general performance-wise. It just
happens to have the highest available capacity, too.

Because the drive will be my internal startup drive, and because I have both
an expansion bay drive and enclosures, I think I'm now leaning toward the
7200rpm for benefits to both OS 10.3.3 and applications.

Thanks everyone for your opinions.

60GB 7200RPM or 80GB 5400RPM

2004-03-31 Thread Sam
What would you buy?

I'm really stuck here. I can't decide which drive to buy for my Pismo, and I
need one very soon. I'm stuck between the Hitachi/IBM Travelstar 60GB
7200rpm vs the 80GB 5400rpm.

Since I've seen very similar prices on them, is the performance increase
from a 5400rpm drive to a 7200rpm drive worth the smaller size? I'll be
doing some video editing, some music editing, and a lot of general everyday
multi-tasking in various apps.

Pismo 400mhz, 1GB RAM. Unless the performance boost is "feelable", I'm
liking the size of the 80GB.

Thanks in advance for your advice.

Re: Pismo HD

2004-03-18 Thread Sam
Reading through these old postings about a bigger HD for the Pismo, what are
the thoughts on the Hitachi/IBM Travelstar 60GB 7200rpm vs the 80GB 5400rpm?
Has anyone tried them head to head? Is there a noticeable performance boost
from the 7200rpm drive? Price is about the same for both, and I'm not sure
which one is the better choice. I'm looking for max performance, but another
20GB for the money sure is nice...

Spinning Beachball on Pismo w/ Panther

2004-01-20 Thread Sam Strong
Hi all -

I just re-subscribed to this list to ask this questions, so apologies if
this has recently been asked. I just installed Panther on my wife's Pismo
last weekend and for the most part she and I are very pleased with it. We
are having one recurring problem that I would like some help with though.

My wife connects to a server at her school and has shut down a couple of
times without disconnecting and then brought the PB home. With Jaguar this
was no problem but now when she restarts in Panther she is presented with
the neverending spinning beachball of death as it looks for the server. We
can't seem to get it to stop looking for the server and can't get to the
finder, although we can open some applications. I have trashed the recent
servers folder, run fsck (which helped the next time we restarted), repaired
permissions, etc., but would appreciate some feedback from someone more
knowledgeable than I am about network stuff. Is there a file that I can
trash? Some preference pane? Please let me know if you have any
suggestions. Thanks!

Last iBook and PowerBooks to boot OS9?

2004-01-08 Thread Sam
Are the most recent Apple laptops to still boot OS 9: any iBook G3 and any
non-FW800 Powerbook 15"?

Apple's list, for reference:
<http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=86209>

Figured I'd check with the list since people sometimes discover otherwise on
things like this.

Thanks-

Pismo Modem Question

2003-02-27 Thread Sam Strong
Hi all -

Speaking of Pismo's (as we have been doing a lot lately), does anyone have a
recommendation for a really good modem script to use with the internal
modem? We use the "Apple Internal 56k" script in my wife's Pismo, but are
not real happy with it - lots of lost connections, refusals to connect, etc.
It's not the phone line because my G3 sitting next to the Pismo (or at least
close) using the same phone line connects practically perfectly.
Recommendations would be most appreciated! Thanks -

I use this same mouse on a variety of computers including my wife's Pismo, a
G3 DT, and an iMac, so perhaps I can comment. The behavior of the mouse in
OS 9 on the Pismo is normal since USB support is not found in the ROM it
must wait for the extensions to load before it "sees" the mouse.

In X you have to install the Logitech software download before the mouse
will be fully functional. This download is not included on the CD that
comes with the mouse, but is fairly easy to find on the Logitech site if
memory serves. It then appears in the System Preferences pane at the very
bottom under "additional stuff" (OK, that's not what it's called, but I
don't have an OS X computer handy here at work - something like that
though). Then you open this preference pane and set the buttons from there.

I am confused though when you say that the mouse is ignored in X. Without
the Logitech software installed the mouse is still "seen" for me. The
cursor will move and the buttons will all operate as a single click. I just
have to install the software to enable the scroll wheel and programmable
clicks. Does the mouse not even move the cursor for you?

By the way, I really love this mouse. I have three now and have never had
the least bit of problem with any of them. Even my wife became addicted to
them! I got them each on sale at our local Office Depot for a measly
$14.99, which is a great price for an optical two button wheel mouse in my
book (and no, I have no affiliation with either Office Depot or Logitech).
I suppose that this is slightly off topic, so please feel free to e-mail me
off list if you want to continue to troubleshoot, etc.

Slightly OT: Scanning Software Question

2002-10-30 Thread Sam Strong
Hi All -

Got a software question for you. My wife wants to use an Epson 1200photo
scanner with her Pismo running 9.1. She already has it set up with Omnipage
pro to do text and really likes it. She needs to scan photo's, tables, &
images now and we are looking for a nice and simple scanning program to use
with the scanner and 9.1. She will mostly be scanning
pictures/charts/graphs from documents and pasting them in other Appleworks
documents (she's a teacher). We think that even PhotoDeluxe is overkill for
this and puts too many extentions, etc on the PB. Before you suggest
upgrading to OS X and using the very nice and simple to use image capture
program that comes with it, please be assured that I have suggested this and
it is not an option for her at this point.

So does anyone know of a simple scanning program for saving images that's
compatible with 9.1, simple to use, and twain compliant for the Epson 1200
Perfection Photo scanner? Any help would be much appreciated and would help
immensely in making me look good in this situation!

Re: Personal Laserwriter printing from Pismo

2002-08-16 Thread Sam Strong

Hi again all -

Just a note to say thanks to all of you who responded and helped to get my
wife's Pismo printing to the old Personal Laserwriter through my G3 DT. I
ended up connecting the two computers with a crossover cable and enabling
"share this printer" in the laserwriter set-up menu and installing the
printer share extension on the Pismo. Works like a charm - and I already
had everything that I needed! Thanks again to all who responded.

Personal Laserwriter printing from Pismo

2002-08-15 Thread Sam Strong

Got a question for you networking types. I've got a Personal Laserwriter
300 that works wonderfully with my G3 DT but my wife wants to be able to
print to it from her Pismo. Is there any way to share the printer somehow?
The computers currently are not networked, but I can do that with a
crossover cable and file sharing on the G3. My question is really how to
get her Pismo to be able to see the printer. Let me know if anyone has any
ideas or has hooked up one of these printers to a PB. Thanks!

Re: Pismo doesn't see FireWire QPS Que!

2002-07-25 Thread Sam Donaldson

That sounds good, the strange thing is that the drive does work, sometimes.
For example it worked last night for just one CD, then when I rebooted a bit
later on it wasn't there.
Maybe a loose connection inside the FW ports on the Pismo?
Anyone know how to check without breaking either the bank or the 'book?
Thanks,
Sam

Pismo doesn't see FireWire QPS Que!

2002-07-24 Thread Sam Donaldson

Hi all, after a long break I'm back with the same problem (sort of).

Yesterday my Que! 8x4x32x cdrw rose from its 6month slumber and surprised me
by successfully burning CDs in both iTunes and Toast 5.1 (OS9.1, 192Mb, 20gb
no other FW devices). This morning the drive didn't even appear in the ASP.

It DOES, however, work just fine with a friends TiBook (same cables and all
that) but no response from the Pismo...

Is that the FW ports gone? Multiple plug permutations and re-plugging-in
and things have no effect, nor does the "shut-down/start-up" fix-all
solution from Apple. Is there a way to test FW ports without another FW
device (I've not got access to any).

As ever, thoughts, advice, similar problems or even complete solutions are
appreciated,
Thanks!
Sam

Re: FireWire Que! CD-RW not recognised in pismo

2002-04-07 Thread Sam Donaldson

Toast Titanium 5.1 updater DID disable those extensions, really, it did! It
left the disc burner extension enabled though and have turned that off,
which has not helped the situation.

I've now down a diagnostic clean install and the ASP still shows nothing.

I've yet to try it on another machine, or test the FW ports with other
devices, but I haven't the time to do that just yet... It looks like I've
run out of options until then
Thanks to all for your help,
Sam

Re: FireWire Que! CD-RW not recognised in pismo

2002-04-06 Thread Sam Donaldson

Thanks Gene but Toast does that automatically when it's installed. They
haven't been active for a while. I've also tried re-enabling and then
disabling them again, but that doesn't work either. Thanks anyway though,
Any other offers?

FireWire Que! CD-RW not recognised in pismo

2002-04-06 Thread Sam Donaldson

Hi everybody,
I'm having a rather big problem with my Que! FireWire CD burner (8x4x32) in
that it is no longer recognised by the system, no matter what I do. I was
happily burning CDs only yesterday, and then, this morning - dead as a dodo.

The power's there, and of course turning it off and on again does nothing.
Nor does shutting down, or restarting the computer x number of times.

Apple System Profiler cannot see the drive, nor can iTunes or Toast Titanium
5.1, although strangely iTunes says that it can detect it in it's "CD
Burning" prefs panel, but fails to burn the CD when asked with the standard
"CD software/drive not found..." Toast doesn't even do that.

I'm running OS9.2.2 with the latest firmware and firewire (2.8.5) on a pismo
400 with 192 RAM and a 20gb hard disk. I'm also going mad.

Thanks in advance for any help you guys can give! I seem to remember having
a similar topic come up a couple of months ago, but I didn't save the posts
so could someone paste the relevant bits up again?
Thanks again,
Sam

Yeah, good point, one of those lint free yellow duster type things seems to
work ok.
