Re: Airport DSL Networking

2004-03-09 Thread Tom Roth
The problem is you have two routers and you don't need two routers. I'm guessing you
need more ports. The thing to do would be to add a simple hub to the Airport. Since
you can't get the Airport to not act as a router see if your other router (D-Link was
it?) can act as a hub only. If not, just get a simple hub to plug into the back of
your Airport. Whatever you do, get the configuration for one device set correctly
first before bringing another variable into the picture.

Well, it is early in the morning and I may be confused but...

My base station is one of the older ones (only one ethernet port and one
modem port). Did you configure the base station before connecting it to
the router? If not, connect an ethernet cable directly from the base
station to the Pismo. Open Airport Admin Utility on the Pismo. Open
Configure. Click the Network tab. Disable Enable DHCP server on
Ethernet. Enable Enable Airport to Ethernet Bridging. Quit Airport
Admin Utility. Disconnect the cable from the Pismo to the base station.
Reconnect the base station to the router. See if the Pismo can now
 connect.

I tried the above and in OS 9.2.2 with the latest software for the
single ether net connector graphite software loaded airport under
networks, enable ether net bridging was not available choice, the
enable DHCP was there and I unchecked it but no other options or
screens opened.. The router is working, that's good, but no wireless.

A few thoughts. First of all, you have OS 9 on this machine, why not
use SCSI disk mode? This would allow you to make your powerbook into a
large external hard drive from which you could then back your stuff

Can't use SCSI disk mode on a driver equal to or greater than 4GB.

Re: [OT] Monitor sudden death

Sounds like the power supply. Monitor repairs are usually not cost effect. These

-tom

 From: Laurent Daudelin
 Subject: [OT] Monitor sudden death

A little off-topic but since I didn't know where to start, I thought I would
 give it a try here.

I bought a used Apple Studio Display 21 about a year ago. It was working
fine although there has always been a slight problems with some areas on the
monitor that were slightly darker. Geometry adjustments could make the
problem less apparent but I was unable to make it go away completely.

Anyway, over the course of the last few weeks, I would have problems with
the monitor, like it would lose its image, or there would be a bad case for
degaussing, accompanied by some kind of strange noises, but I was always
 able to bring it back.

Yesterday evening, all of a sudden, the picture shrank toward the middle of
the screen and was very fuzzy. I could barely see what was on the screen,
much less move the mouse pointer. I tried to switch the resolution by
guessing the location of the display menu in OS X.

At some point, the picture disappeared completely. I forced the computer to
restart but the picture never came back. I put back my Studio Display 17 and
all was fine. So, the problem is definitely with the Studio Display 21.

So, what are my options? Could I have it repaired for a reasonable fee? I
don't want to spend a lot of money on it because I'm afraid it could break
again. I've read that those problems where the monitor seems dead are the
 easier to solve.

In the event I want to dispose of it, what can I do?

 Thanks in advance!

 -Laurent.

Re: Upgrading

Airport supports AppleTalk over the wireless connection which very few other wireless
routers do. The Buffalo is one of the exceptions. Airport also has the ability to
connect a modem as backup to DSL/cable or as primary connection. This feature is
available on some other wireless routers too. But, that cool design is Apple only.

I bought a Netgear wireless router and gave up AppleTalk.

You could probably save some money. I have a fairly wireless
household (Powerbook 800, Airport card in a G4 PPC and a Windows

connections as well as the wireless). Less than half the cost of the

Are you network printing or direct connect? Some routers will work with AppleTalk if
you have it plugged in to one of the ports but not over the wireless connection. For
example, I've got an Apple LaserWriter 320 that connects with a wire to the serial
port on my PB3400 and I use AppleTalk protocol to print to it. If my Netgear
supported AppleTalk I could plug the LW320 into a an Asante EtherT to make it a
network printer and then plug the EtherT into the router. I could then printer to the
printer from anywhere in the house via my wireless connection in my PB.

processor speed (that is, if you are talking about the G4 iBook), and, I
believe, they have the same monitor output. The main advantages are the
SuperDrive, size and weight, and the stylish case design. The iBook G4 that
I have is very small, and it even fits in a PowerBook Duo carry case! Also,
unless the 15 monitor you are talking about has capabilities of 1024x768
resolution or better, it will not be any advantage over the built-in LCD
screen, as the iBook and PowerBook 12 both have max resolutions of
1024x768. I actually prefer the LCD over a CRT.

longer WWW downloads, etc., getting by with just a screen saver. All
that's changed now, particularly because of the occasional need to
conserve battery power. Is it still possible, or advisable to set
the Energy saver control panel to never?

If you are on battery you WANT it to sleep if you stop using it. If you are
connected power it isn't quite so important but you certainly want the
display to dim and hard drive to spin down when not in use. No reason to
have the machine generating heat when it is sitting unused.

And if you're doing a long slow download the HD will be active so it won't go to sleep
though the screen may go blank. I've got my PB set to sleep at 5 minutes.

  2. Since I notice now an additional trackpad control panel, is the
mouse control panel still necessary, or should it be de-activated in
  extensions manager?

Control Panels take up no memory so there is no benefit to deactivating.

I don't think that's correct. I used to use a program many years ago that worked much
like Extensions Manager except that it also showed how much RAM each Control Panels
and Extension used. Some Control Panels are really just programs that run but some of
them do load into memory upon booting.

Re: OS X on Lombard

2003-08-19 Thread Tom Roth

When I was trying to install OS X on a beige G3 I had to pull all but the original
factory RAM. I saw a huge thread on the Apple forums about removing just about
everything from the Mac that wasn't factory (and making sure the target hard drive was
less than 8GB) and sure enough I finally got OS X to install. I then put the RAM back
in and it worked though I wouldn't recomend putting OS X on a beige G3. It was a tad
sluggish.

Do you have anything other non-standard hardware? Maybe some strange
CPU upgrade card? Or other external things like USB or SCSI devices,
or PCMCIA cards? Also, try removing one or the other 256 MB modules, or
even returning to your original Apple-supplied RAM (if you still have it).

Re: disappointing tiBook wireless

2003-07-22 Thread Tom Roth

Since you seem to have range problems when using the D-Link card or the Airport card I
might suggest you consider the wireless base station as being the problem. Is it near
any large metal objects, other electronics? Could it be conflicting with your
cordless phone or a neighbor's wireless router? Is it up high so that the signal can
broadcast far? Maybe the base station has poor range?

I have an older PowerBook 3400 and am using an Orinoco card and a Netgear wireless
router (just sitting on my desk) and have been out in the backyard with it some 30-40
feet from the house and it worked fine.

 Hi,

Yesterday I picked up a D-Link wireless 802.11b router for 40 dollars after rebates.
I've never used wireless with my two year old tiBook.

It works well if the tiBook is within a few feet of the router. If I sit at my
dining room table, 35 feet away and in clear visual line of sight of the router, the
connection barely works. Simple web pages take a long time to open, and those with
pictures often time out before the page is fully rendered. I heard the tiBook was
 bad, but this is unacceptable.

The tiBook is also unusable 20 feet and one wall away in an adjacent room to the
 router.

Re: Buying new Powerbook

2003-07-14 Thread Tom Roth

I've been following this thread as I contemplate the next used PowerBook to buy. I
currently have a PB3400 so I would like to get up into the G3 realm next. I see some
really good deals on used iBooks but the Pismos seem to be very popular and are
usually about the same money or more than a used iBook. What are your thoughts on the
iBook vs. the Pismo?

-tom

I am thinking of buying a new Powerbook, currently I have a
Wallstreet series 292 mhz. I am thinking of getting either
the 400 or 500 mhz pismo. Will the ram I just purchased work
in the Pismo? What are some opinions on the Pismo? Or should
I go with the Lombard? Thanks for any insight!

FWIW - Faced with a very similar decision (choosing between Lombard or
Pismo, basically), I chose Pismo. Main reason for me is that I *NEED*
Firewire and it's ugly to have to use a PCMCIA FireWire card. Pismo
also seems to have pretty nearly only good reviews; people who own them
seem to love them. And it's slightly more OSX-friendly than Lombard.

Re: Buying new Powerbook

2003-07-14 Thread Tom Roth

Speed is certianly a primary consideration but what about things like the quality of
construction? Is the iBook as well made as the Pismo or is it going to fall apart?
What about the feel of the keyboard? Things that make up the daily experience of
using the computer. So if you had the oportunity to buy a Pismo or an iBook for say,
$800 and the hard drive, RAM, etc where all about the same; which would you get and
why?

One thing to consider is that only the more recent iBooks (last two

 significant difference to speed.

Re: transferring files to Wintel over home network?

2003-06-27 Thread Tom Roth

I did the very same thing a few years ago with a dumb hub. I used an FTP server
program on the Mac and logged in from the PC. You're not going to get a GUI interface
to transfer the files. Then when I was going from PC to Mac (the right way! ;) I just
put the files I needed on a zip disc. I'd suggest zip disc or burn a CD if possible.
Much simpler.

I want to transfer some files from my Lombard (OS 9.2.2) to my Thinkpad

I can plug both machines into ethernet ports so I don't have to get a

I've had to tinker with the wintel boxes to get them to see each other
on the network, how can I make them visible to the Lombard (or vice-versa)?

 Thanks

Re: question regarding DSL modem, Graphite Base station, andpismo

You probably need to configure the Airport with the correct user id and password.
Most DSL accounts require that. Once you do it the information will be stored in the

connect the modem directly into my Pismo, internet access works fine.
When I connect my modem to the graphite Base station, I don't get an

just cant seem to get wireless internet access. Any help would most

Re: OT: question regarding DSL modem, Graphite Base station, and pismo

2003-06-20 Thread Tom Roth
Typically you want to power up the cable or DSL modem, wait a minute, then power up
the router (Airport in this case) and wait another minute and then boot up the
computer. Usually the router will get the IP number from the cable/DSL modem and then
in turn act as a mini DHCP server for all connecting computers.

Re: M/S Drops IE for Mac????

Where do you get an OS 9 version of Mozilla? On their website I only see download
links for OS X.

-tom

 From: Michelle Klein-Hass
Subject: Re: M/S Drops IE for Mac

And the fact of the matter is that even for those stuck using OS9, Mozilla is
a surprisingly good experience. Hopefully the moves to trim the fat in
Mozilla by creating Phoenix/Firebird/Thunderbird on the Windows and Linux
sides will translate down to a Classic MacOS version that's leaner and
 meaner.

Mozilla works beautifully on my Wallstreet, with only 192MB of RAM. The email
client could use a little help -- you can prevent the email client from
running scripts and you can also prevent the email client from showing
externally-linked pictures but you cannot turn HTML display in email off
completely -- but that's just picking nits.

Netscape might be on the way out and IE might be doomed, but as long as there
is a Free/Open Source software community there will always be a Mozilla.

Unsubscribe Kit

First, ask your Internet Provider to mail you an Unsubscribing Kit. Then follow these
directions. The kit will most likely be the standard no-fault type. Depending on
requirements, System A and/or System B can be used. When operating System A, depress
lever and a plastic dalkron unsubscriber will be dispensed through the slot
immediately underneath. When you have fastened the adhesive lip, attach connection
marked by the large X outlet hose. Twist the silver- coloured ring one inch below
the connection point until you feel it lock.

The kit is now ready for use. The Cin-Eliminator is activated by the small switch on
the lip. When securing, twist the ring back to its initial condition, so that the two
orange lines meet. Disconnect. Place the dalkron unsubscriber in the vacuum receptacle
to the rear. Activate by pressing the blue button.

The controls for System B are located on the opposite side. The red release switch
places the Cin-Eliminator into position; it can be adjusted manually up or down by
pressing the blue manual release button. The opening is self- adjusting. To secure
after use, press the green button, which simultaneously activates the evaporator and
returns the Cin-Eliminator to its storage position.

You may log off if the green exit light is on over the evaporator . If the red light
is illuminated, one of the Cin-Eliminator requirements has not been properly
implemented. Press the List Guy call button on the right of the evaporator . He will
secure all facilities from his control panel.

To use the Auto-Unsub, first undress and place all your clothes in the clothes rack.
Put on the velcro slippers located in the cabinet immediately below. Enter the shower,
taking the entire kit with you. On the control panel to your upper right upon entering
you will see a Shower seal button. Press to activate. A green light will then be
illuminated immediately below. On the intensity knob, select the desired setting. Now
depress the Auto-Unsub activation lever. Bathe normally.

The Auto-Unsub will automatically go off after three minutes unless you activate the
Manual off override switch by flipping it up. When you are ready to leave, press the
blue Shower seal release button. The door will open and you may leave. Please remove
the velcro slippers and place them in their container.

If you prefer the ultrasonic log-off mode, press the indicated blue button. When the
twin panels open, pull forward by rings A B. The knob to the left, just below the
blue light, has three settings, low, medium or high. For normal use, the medium
setting is suggested.

After these settings have been made, you can activate the device by switching to the
ON position the clearly marked red switch. If during the unsubscribing operation,
you wish to change the settings, place the manual off override switch in the OFF
position. You may now make the change and repeat the cycle. When the green exit light
goes on, you may log off and have lunch. Please close the door behind you.
