 Speaking of BTO displays...
Apple Computer may be planning to offer PowerBooks with higher density
displays, and may have intended to do so with its latest PowerBook
offerings, tipsters tell AppleInsider.

Then neither will the profitability. IBM has been losing GOBS of money
doing things this way.

This is why one of the first things Steve Jobs did when he came back
to Apple was reduce the model line to 4. The complexity's crept up,
and now the model line is 5 again, but it's a rational 5. Well, call
it 5.5 with the eMac, but I expect the eMac is on it's way out.
I am not that familiar with Apple's middle years in terms of offered
products, but practically all the lines right now (iMac, iBook, Power
Mac, PowerBook) feature many models (usually differing by screen size),
each one available in one or more configurations (also true with Mac
mini and eMac, I believe). iPod line is getting more and more bloated
as well. Is it really any better than before and than what other
companies are offering?

You want to look at bloat, look closely at Dell (not just consumer but
consumer, small business, and enterprise) or even better yet HP. HP has
dozens of different models. In fact, bloat at HP is so bad you can find one
basic computer model with more than 10 different variations sporting
different software packs, hard drive and optical variations, and even what
retailer sells the bloody thing.

Compared to this, Apple's offerings are quite narrow.

If you don't know about the Performa Years then the current situation
could seem unruly, yes.

Apple offers two model lines: 2 ibooks that use many common components,
and three powerbooks, which also use many common components.

IBM has four product lines in the think pad series, offering a bunch of
different configurations in each, although each model uses common
components.

Dell offers 4 'Inspiron' laptops, all different styles, 4 Latitude
models, in two different styles and 2 Precision models (only one
style).

Apple has a simpler model line than any other major manufacturer out
there.

I was (not very seriously) alluding to the OP of this thread, who called
for Apple to offer alternative port locations on PBs. Sounds like HP's

Re: New iBooks/PB's compared to Pismo's, etc.

2005-02-15 Thread Andrew F.
That's not a fair comparison, Dell's laptops are generic Taiwan models with
the Dell brand. Look at a high-end IBM ThinkPad, the T42 for example, and
you find a build-to-order model that allows a choice of processors, screen
size, networking and connectivity options, even options for embedded
security and finger print readers. They even let you choose the built-in
pointing device (the eraserhead, which I love) or the eraserhead AND the
touchpad.

Apple is getting better with video options on the 15 PowerBook, but for the
most part they come one way. Yes, the Apple laptops are very well
integrated, but pick up a ThinkPad T42 and you will see the same build
quality and integration. IBM used to even give you the option of Linux
instead of Windows, not sure if they still do that or not.

Using the car analogy that is so common, if Apple is selling BMW, comparing
to Dell you are comparing to Chevrolet, while IBM would represent Mercedes.
I have (and currently) own both Apple and IBM laptops, and there are
honestly things that I like better about each, not to mention a few areas in
which IBM's design is better than Apple's.

For example, hinges. Any long time Apple laptop owner has likely had issues
with hinges. My current 12 PowerBook is great, but my last 12 POwerBook,
while not loose, tended to bind a bit (new is smooth as glass). Titanium PB
hinges flat-out break, as do those on Wallstreets, while Lombard and Pismo
hinges just get loose.

I've owned four ThinkPads over the years, and every single one of them had
firm, smooth and sturdy hinges that held up to hard use.

IBM's current T-series are very thin and light, weighing about the same as
my 12 PowerBook and being just as thin, though with a 14 screen and a
swappable drive bay that takes a second battery. That is great design,
though Apple's trade-off is the wonderful slot-loading drive, which if they
put their design emphasis on it, could probably be made to work in a
removable bay, which could probably be crammed into the current form-fact.

What I'm saying is that Apple's design, while up there with the very best in
the industry, is not THE BEST in every area. Other companies (Sony, Toshiba
to name two) also have design elements in their laptops that are innovative
and superior. As Mac users we have it pretty good, but the fact that so
many people here hang on to their Pismo and Lombard models makes it pretty
clear that people value removable drives and multiple battery capability.
Starting with the Titanium, Apple abandoned those features, while IBM
continues to improve them with every revision to their T-series ThinkPad.

ThinkPads have always been profitable, but my take is that IBM wants to sell

Just looked it up. Lenova has a 5-year-license on the Think names, including
ThinkPad, and that is renewable. Also, IBM will continue to sell the machine,
only
Lenovo will be the primary manufacturer (IBM owns an 18% stake in Lenovo.

There will still be IBM ThinkPads for years to come, but there will also be
Lenovo
ThinkPads, most likely sold in China and Asia, with the IBM models continuing
in the
US and Europe.

This is a merger, not strictly a sale, kind of like the HP/Compaq merger. We
still
have iPaqs, only they are called HP iPaqs now.

Hopefully that means that nothing will really change, if the IBM press release
can be
believed. Check it out at

Re: New iBooks/PB's compared to Pismo's, etc.

2005-02-14 Thread Marcin Wichary
The expense is not going to be that high, since Apple can mass
produce. As I said before, I'd pay extra just to have a BTO for the
features I need. What would be nice is dual expansion bays and ports
on the back. Not asking for too much, is it? With today's
technology, third party companies would have a field day with
expansion bays being available on new PowerBooks. For the most part,
in my opinion, a BTO means build to order. What is actually
happening though, is not BTO. It's like buying a car with or without
a stereo. Nothing is changed, just simply added or subtracted. If I
want a BTO, then I want a BTO. . .know what I mean?
But your BTO requires redesigning the whole computer from ground up:
there's no place for expansion bays, nor there is for back ports with
current hinge design. It's not as simple as adding Bluetooth or AirPort
Extreme.

I'd love to see a good dock (possibly integrated with a stand), and two
USB ports on each side. But I will give Apple the benefit of the doubt
and presume this is much more difficult to engineer than me or others
can think... let alone offering computers with vastly different
characteristics, as you propose.

Besides, I'm not sure anyone wants the return of the Sculley era with
gazillions of models hard to tell apart.

I have a 12 and a 15 Alu.

Comparing my Alu Books to my 550 and 667DVI TiBooks,

The AluBook is the best ever portable.
Planning to buy a new 15 with illuminated keyboard :o)

never move it off the desk that doesn't make it a poor design as a

I agree with you about the practicality of the ports; I'm a Pismo owner,
but recently borrowed a 15 PB for a couple of weeks while the pismo was
being repaired. Of course the newer PB is a lovely machine in most
respects, but those cables sticking out of the side, right where I wanted
to put books and papers, really irritated me.

But given the screen hinge design, it's hard to see what they could do...

decision of economy. Selling three models of PowerBooks and having the
keyboard be interchangeable keeps costs down.

The only complaint I have about port placement is that there is one USB port
on each side not together. I have an external USB drive that takes power
from 2 USB ports. It can be used on the TiBook but not on my AlBook. The
special cable doesn't reach to both sides. Why couldn't the keep them
 together like on the Ti?

Re: New iBooks/PB's compared to Pismo's, etc.

2005-02-13 Thread Andrew
It is also probably the best keyboard that Apple has ever put on a laptop.
Actually, it
may be the best that ANYONE has ever put on a laptop, with only IBM ThinkPads
giving it any real competition.

I think looking back, the best-feeling keyboard (nice action, few typos, high
speed)
was on my old THinkPad 600 back around 1998 or so. A friend has the new
ThinkPad T42 and I'd call it a toss-up with the current POwerBook. Keys are a
bit
springier on the ThinkPad, but a bit better shaped on the PowerBook (except for
the
arrow and function keys, which are a bit larger on the IBM.

Us PowerBookers have never had it this good, at least as far as keyboards go.

On the comment of cost. . .I wasn't talking about the end product cost,
I was talking about manufacturing cost that Apple would have to shell
out, hence the remark to how much $$ they have made on iPod/iTunes

The expense is not going to be that high, since Apple can mass produce.
As I said before, I'd pay extra just to have a BTO for the features I
need. What would be nice is dual expansion bays and ports on the back.
Not asking for too much, is it? With today's technology, third party
companies would have a field day with expansion bays being available on
new PowerBooks. For the most part, in my opinion, a BTO means build
to order. What is actually happening though, is not BTO. It's like
buying a car with or without a stereo. Nothing is changed, just simply
added or subtracted. If I want a BTO, then I want a BTO. . .know what
I mean?

Re: New iBooks/PB's compared to Pismo's, etc.

2005-02-12 Thread Andrew F.
I see good and bad to having the ports on the side. Having just sold my
Pismo (and still having a Lombard in the family, not to mention a ThinkPad)
I do like the rear-mounted ports when sitting at a desk with stuff plugged
in.

However, when actually plugging something in, like my iPod, camera or other
peripheral that is not always there, the side-mounted port is easier to
locate and use without disrupting the PowerBook.

Duplicate ports would be great, but would make for too large a machine and
would also be unsightly. I think I am leaning towards Apple's current
side-mounted ports because I usually just use the laptop as-is, and I love
the drop-down hinge for flying, making a lower overall profile (bad for neck
and shoulders) that is less prone to passenger-in-front-reclining syndrome.

I went from a Pismo to a 17 and I think I actually prefer the ports on the
side. Whenever you make a connection, you don't have to get behind the
PowerBook, or stand up above it to see where you're plugging the connector.

As for the keyboard, I think it's a big improvement over the Pismo's
keyboard. It's seems a little stiffer which I do like since I kinda of punch
the keys maybe harder than the average people. Plus, don't forget that the
space on each side of the keyboard is used to house the speakers and the
microphone.

Don't hold your breath for the G5 PowerBooks, you could die of
suffocation...

I do like the rear-mounted ports when sitting at a desk with stuff
plugged
in.

However, when actually plugging something in, like my iPod, camera or
other
peripheral that is not always there, the side-mounted port is easier to
locate and use without disrupting the PowerBook.

Duplicate ports would be great, but would make for too large a machine
and
would also be unsightly. I think I am leaning towards Apple's current
side-mounted ports because I usually just use the laptop as-is, and I
love
the drop-down hinge for flying, making a lower overall profile (bad
for neck
and shoulders) that is less prone to passenger-in-front-reclining
syndrome.

Hello all,
Just wanted to share this little tid-bit. . .
I was about the purchase the new 15 PowerBook with the SuperDrive.
Everything was a go. . . except for one little hardware feature I
noticed at the last minute. All of the connectivity ports for the new
PB's are on the side, like most iBooks. Why doesn't Apple make a
PowerBook like the Pismo, Lombard, etc. and put the ports in the back?
The way I've got my Pismo set up at home, every port, with the
exception for the audio in, video out and modem, are connected.
Granted, my internet is wireless, but still; if I had the new model,
I'd have a bunch of unsightly wires sticking out the side. I'm greedy
when it comes to screen real-estate, so I always have two monitors.
The 17 didn't appeal to me due to the poorly designed keyboard. I
couldn't believe that Apple never considered making the worlds first
laptop that had a full sized keyboard. . . complete with a 10 key.
There's room on the 17 for this. . .instead the 17 just has odd
looking spaces on both sides of the keyboard, not to mention ports on
the side. Ugh. . .
I'm optimistic though, and not in a rush; at the moment, I have no
need for any more VRAM, which to me is the main reason to sell off the
Pismo. Plus, with the G4/550 from FastMac installed, my Pismo is
zooming. I think I'll wait to see if the new PowerBook G5 models have
the features that still sets apart the Pismo and the like from the
others. (fingers crossed.)

Well, for the most part, I agree with you Andrew as far as access goes.
But, then I have two USB powered hubs and two Firewire hubs as well.
I hardly ever have to give my Pismo a reach around unless I'm taking
it with me out in the field.

Re: New iBooks/PB's compared to Pismo's, etc.

2005-02-12 Thread Andrew F.
I use mine mostly as a portable (hence choosing the 12 over the 15 or 17),
and rarely plug anything in at all, except for my iPod, camera or AC power.
I never really got the whole desktop replacement thing. If I want to work
at my desk, that's what my desktop Power Mac is for, which easily plays nice
with my PowerBook using the PB in target disk mode.

That's maybe the reason why we have different opinions; I take my PowerBook
to work every weekday. Even if I have a wired Ethernet network of 100Mbits,
I almost always use AirPort at home because that's one less wire to connect.
I'm pretty much like Andrew. Most of the time, the only thing plugged in is
the adapter. Sometimes I'll use the scanner or the iPod or my external
FireWire drive so I can just stay sitting and easily plug and unplug
those...
