Pismo upgrade?

2005-11-19 Thread kaldav

Hello,
I already have a 400 mhz Pismo. What components would I need to
upgrade it to a 500 mhz? Only the CPU, or other parts also?

Thanks.

Powerlogix Pismo upgrade

2004-06-18 Thread Leslie Burkholder
Powerlogix has a new upgrade available for the Pismo CPU. The new upgrade is
a G3 750gx running at 900mhz with 1mb internal L2 cache. An old upgrade
available from Powerlogix was a G3 750fx running at 800 or 900mhz with
.512mb internal L2 cache

No performance benchmarks comparing these are available on the Powerlogix
website. Are there any available anywhere? Has anyone any guesses about what
such a comparison would look like? Would the 750gx be 10% faster than the
750fx? 25%? 05%?

Thanks
Leslie Burkholder

Dead Pismo: Upgrade or fix

2004-03-03 Thread Michael Breslin
I managed to kill the processor on my Pismo. Does anyone out there do
upgrades on dead processor cards or do they all need a working core? Is it
worth the cost of upgrade - someone has offered me a 500 G3 for a great
price?

Thanks,

You can sometimes find Pismo 400MHz processor daughtercards on eBay for
around $70.

2004-03-03 Thread Jim
Michael,

There are a few places you can buy replacement processor cards for the
Pismo, such as strangers on Ebay, or even more reliable sources, such
as http://www.wegenermedia.com Some folks might even do the repair
work for you.

Consider, however, that if you're feeling adventurous, you could easily
disassemble the Pismo, sell off the battery, CD/DVD module, RAM,
keyboard, screen, airport, HD, motherboard, power supply, and other
components on Ebay yourself... and probably make enough profit from the
parts to buy a new iBook. :-)

Good luck!

Well, yeah, I'd say it's worth it only if you prefer the Pismo to the
newer 'Books. Which I do, for various reasons.

Now that sounds really interesting. The Pismo G4 upgrade is still
only 500MHz (and, so I hear, will likely never be faster), so its

what IS the deal here? why isn't a faster chip being offered?

I've wondered about this myself. According to Charles Moore at the
link I included, I assume that reports that no Pismo G4 upgrades
faster than 500 MHz will be possible due to pin spacing on the faster
G4 chips were accurate.

don't forget that OS X runs much better on a G4, and the graphics
rendering is altivec optimised.

Well, from what I've read I'd say it's more like OS X runs *somewhat*
better on a G4. But it also seems to run well enough on G3. So long
as the iBooks are G3--and it appears they may be for some time
still--Apple is not likely to radically G4-ize OS X. So the question
is, which would offer better performance: 500MHz G4 or 800MHz G3?
Like the quote from PowerLogix said, depends on what you use most.

BTW, I didn't really mean to start another flame war over personal
preferences in laptop design. Why is it that people become so quickly
harsh and abusive in online communication? Over issues that don't
really matter at all? It's fine with me if other folks love their
TiBooks; I just don't particularly care for them. But nor do I think
that somebody who likes the TiBook is by that token alone some kind
of subhuman. It's just a matter of taste, after all.

For me, the TiBook does look classy from a distance, and I know it
turns heads, but I find them uncomfortable to use. Same with the
iceBook, though on other points I find it somewhat more attractive.
I'm usually sitting at a desk, with the heel of my hand resting on
its surface while my index finger and thumb are working with the
trackpad; the sharply squared edges on the current 'Books dig into my
palm in that position, which is uncomfortable. That's a physical
fact, which has nothing to do with whether I'm up with current
fashion. Though in fact I'm not, never have been, at least not on
purpose. Sometimes I move with the herd, sometimes not, but always
for my own reasons.

Obi-Wan wrote:

I applaud Apple for moving *forward* with their design ideas instead of
muddling around with designs that have been done to death.

The idea that something that is more than a couple of years old is
therefore totally invalid by any standard of judgment makes no sense
to me at all. The Buddha lived 2500 years ago, but I find everything
he said is as true today as it was then. My personal preferences are
not a retro design ideal; they're just what I like. It's not an
ideology, just a preference. I don't care when something was

care if its design pleases me and works for me. Some things I like

800MHz G3 Pismo upgrade?

2002-12-24 Thread Andrew Main
Rumor has it...
http://www.macopinion.com/columns/roadwarrior/02/12/23/index.html
that PowerLogix will soon offer an 800MHz G3 upgrade for the Pismo.

If you prefer a faster AltiVec enabling chip, work with Audio/video
software, make your own music CDs, etc, we recommend continuing with
the G4/500mhz upgrade. If you primarily use your Pismo for work,
documents, email, surfing, etc., then you may want to consider the
G3/800mhz option which is expected to retail for $399, all shipping
included.

Now that sounds really interesting. The Pismo G4 upgrade is still
only 500MHz (and, so I hear, will likely never be faster), so its
speed improvements are mostly limited to AltiVec-enabled SW, which is
not what I mostly use; and the Pismo can't be upgraded to make use of
Quartz Extreme anyway. But an 800MHz G3 should show a significant
improvement in everyday work even without QE, bringing the Pismo up
to near the performance of a late-model iBook (which is still G3
also).

Aside from why this should cost $100 more than the G4 upgrade, when
it's less trouble for the supplier--requires sending in the CPU card
rather than the whole PB--and isn't an outright purchase of a
replacement card like the Lombard G4 upgrade, my only question would
be about heat: while the G4 chip is supposed to run cooler than the
G3, an 800MHz G3 would likely be hotter than a 500MHz G3, unless it's
a significantly different later model.

If it isn't hotter than the stock 500MHz, this upgrade would keep my
Pismo going until I can get a 1GHz G4 iBook (with--I can dream--a
more user-friendly case with rounded edges).

I'll be looking for early reports.

Re: Pismo upgrade 800MHz

2002-12-24 Thread rag bag

hi ...

 From: Andrew Main [EMAIL PROTECTED]
 Subject: 800MHz G3 Pismo upgrade?

 Rumor has it...
 http://www.macopinion.com/columns/roadwarrior/02/12/23/index.html
that PowerLogix will soon offer an 800MHz G3 upgrade for the Pismo.

If you prefer a faster AltiVec enabling chip, work with Audio/video
software, make your own music CDs, etc, we recommend continuing with
the G4/500mhz upgrade. If you primarily use your Pismo for work,
documents, email, surfing, etc., then you may want to consider the
G3/800mhz option which is expected to retail for $399, all shipping
 included.

i can't say i'm interested, especially at that price: i could sell my
pismo and pick up a used ti-book for more or less the same total, or
throw in a few $100 extra and get a refurb, all with QE and a G4 at a
similar clock speed ... AND, if recent history is anything to go by
with these upgrades, probably have less risk of the new CPU causing
problems.

or am i missing something? i guess it would mean x2 for my pismo 400 ...

Now that sounds really interesting. The Pismo G4 upgrade is still
only 500MHz (and, so I hear, will likely never be faster), so its

what IS the deal here? why isn't a faster chip being offered?

speed improvements are mostly limited to AltiVec-enabled SW, which is
not what I mostly use; and the Pismo can't be upgraded to make use of
Quartz Extreme anyway. But an 800MHz G3 should show a significant
improvement in everyday work even without QE, bringing the Pismo up
to near the performance of a late-model iBook (which is still G3
 also).

don't forget that OS X runs much better on a G4, and the graphics
rendering is altivec optimised.

cfn ... greg

there's an alternative

Well, the alternative is PowerLogix; according to the forum on
XLR8YrMac (and considerable discussion on MacInTouch about their
WallStreet upgrades) users have had somewhat checkered experience
with both Newer and PowerLogix, but of the two I'd probably choose
the latter. At least you can contact them directly, which seems to be
difficult/impossible with Newer. When I was looking for my Pismo I
had some correspondence with the owner of PowerLogix, who seemed to
be quite personable; I ended getting a 500 Pismo at a good price
instead of the 400 I thought I was going to get, so have put off the
G4 upgrade for now. If you're considering the upgrade, do check the
forum:
http://forums.xlr8yourmac.com/cpureview.lasso
and select PowerBook G3 2000 Rage 128 Mobility in the popup menu.

Ed,

Thanks for that link. :) I didn't realize that Newer had a product in that
space as well. All I could find mentioned was the PowerLogix one. Then
again, I hadn't looked in TOO much earnest. Hmmm. $300 for that, and then
sell the two 400 Mhz boards that I have once I'm sure the G4 works I'm
liking this. :)

Has anyone had any heat issues with these G4 upgrades in the Lombards?
Looking at the innards of my wife's last night, I didn't notice a LOT in the
way of active cooling other than one small fan that was not exactly located
close to the processor.

I assume you meant $300, as the current price (as per the Powerlogix web
site) is $299.00, which is virtually the same as Newer's price.

The price isn't bad, compared to what you'd pay for any other 500 MHz G4
(a ZIF, for example) and considering the labor and shipping involved. My
only complaint is that it's not enough of a speed bump. I can't really
justify upgrading my 500 MHz G3 to a 500 MHz G4. Hopefully they'll have
some 800 MHz or even 1GHz Pismo upgrades available soon (the new G4 chips
are supposed to use a lot less power, hence less heat generation which is
often the limiting factor for processor speed in laptops).

Hmm. I want to make sure we're on the same page. I am looking at the G4
500 Upgrade for the Lombard and not the Pismo (unlike the starter of
this thread). Those are in the $399 range on the PowerLogix web site.

BlueChip LS G4 500 for Powerbook G3 Lombard - $399

I am assuming that the one for the Pismo will not work in my Lombard. If
it does, then I'm in. :)

Re: Pismo upgrade

2002-12-18 Thread Michael Richardson

I was wondering if the system bus in the Lombard
would create heat problems with the Powerlogix G4
upgrade. I noticed that some people have the upgrade
done, and have no problems with heat. Then there are
those who have to send there computers back several
times before they get it right. I realize that the
Pismo has a faster system bus and thought that maybe
this would accomodate a G4 upgrade better. Maybe
someone can give me some feedback on this theory.
Thanks.

Pismo upgrade

2002-12-17 Thread Ed Zelinsky
I have half a gig of ram in my Pismo and running system 9.1 for now. Is
there any consensus yet about the G4 upgrade and the overheating issue. I
installed Finalcut Pro and plan to get a firewire external drive (any recs?)
so I can learn to edit a movie that I plan to shoot.

Any thoughts/experiences appreciated...

I hope everyone has a great holiday season!

I am totally satisfied with the G4 upgrade. It runs cooler than before,

Re: Pismo upgrade

2002-12-17 Thread Hal
I have the Powerlogix upgrade and I'm quite happy with it. The first
upgrade I got had overheating problems, but Powerlogix had me send the
Pismo back and tested it thoroughly. They were able to duplicate the
crashes I was seeing and installed a new CPU. This second chip runs
cooler than the original 400mHz G3. Battery life is about the same.

I've had it back for almost 2 weeks and no crashes yet. I've played UT
on it, converted a 650MB AVI to a 5.5GB Quicktime movie, and done every
other stress test I can think of.

So far, rock solid. I'm running 10.2.2 with 1GB of ram.

cheers,
-Hal

Ok, I spoke too soon. We're having issues. I'm working with Powerlogix
to try to resolve them. I posted the initial review on xlr8yourmac.com.
Go to the CPU Upgrade review and select Powerbook 200 (Firewire).
Mine's the first review.

The problem I'm having seems to have to do with power draw or heat.
Everything works fine most of the time, but if I run it closed and hook
up an external monitor and keyboard, it crashes within minutes,
particularly if I'm running a game like UT. Hopefully they'll have some
more info for me later today.

Re: Bluechip Pismo upgrade rocks

2002-11-08 Thread Hal
Here's an update on the upgrade.

First of all, Powerlogix has been very responsive, getting back to me
within hours each time I've emailed them.

They had me pull the heatsink and remove the thermal pad and use Arctic
Silver II (which I happen to have a tube of) and reattach the heatsink.

The pismo is running ok when used alone, but when I connect an external
monitor and keyboard and mouse, it crashes when playing the UT intro
movie. It seems to be a heat related issue. After the crash, the cache
software is reporting a cpu temp of over 52C. When the machine is cold
(under 48C), it works fine, but after running for a while, it gets
unstable.

I'll post a follow-up when we figure out what to do next.

Re: Pismo Upgrade

2002-09-30 Thread thecrow

Interesting indeed. I just got off the phone with OWC, Newer Tech has
had my book for 3 weeks now, OWC had it for 11 days before they even
shipped it to Newer Tech, in total I've been without my book for over a
month now. Today OWC told me that Newer Tech finally called to tell
them that the upgrade boards they had/have are all defective. So now
there is another delay, and no definite time as to when the new parts
arrive. So if you're considering the upgrade, believe me, it takes alot
longer than 10 days!

Re: Pismo Upgrade

2002-09-30 Thread dog b

I wish I could say that I was surprised by OWC's
dropping the ball on shipping out your Pismo or
sending it on to newerTech, but I'm not.

I had a nightmare of a customer service situation with
OWC that started in January and wasn't resolved until
late April. By the time I finally got a response from
OWC, and they were prepared to send the HD (a
replacement for a defective drive shipped in
December), I no longer had the machine I had planned
to install it in.

Not as bad as being without the 'book for a month
(plus), but I'm still feeling burned by OWC. I'd been
happy with them after a previous purchase, but have
taken all my business elsewhere since.

Just my experience.

I'm trying to upgrade my Pismo 400 from 320mb ram to Max. Would you let me

Any direction, help or pointing steps how to open the machine will be thankful
 and appreciated.

There are only 2 memory slots in a Pismo, so 128 MB sticks won't cut it. The
max so far is 1 GB, so you need 2 512 MB sticks.

As to replace the hard disk, pull the keyboard, flip it upside down over the
trackpad, then the hard disk is right there, on the right. You will need a
small Philips screwdriver and probably a Torx 8 one too.

Pismo upgrade question

2002-08-20 Thread ezelinsky

What is the 'reborn' Newer Technology companies web address. If the price
for the upgrade is the same I think that I would rather have someone else do
soldering inside my pismo. I have soldered pipe joints before but they ended
up looking nasty!
