Re: WiFI antenna
Has anyone ever come up with a way of connecting some kind of external antenna to the PB to boost signal connectivity? I've got the G4 AL 15 machine, and I don't even see a decent place to attach something to a screw. It would have been nice if there had been a plug or port on the side of the screen that could have done this! If your card slot is free you could look for a PC card adapter with an antenna port. Not as slick as the internal card though. Probably easier to get a higher gain antenna on the access point. Re: Wifi antenna
I ordered the YSC-REO5ET with the MC-card connector for the airport card. I first clicked on 2.4 GHz Antennas for 802.b/g WiFi, under the left hand menu. If you look under range extenders, and click on a model, there is a pull down menu that lets you choose the proper adapter for the airport extreme, if that's what you have. If you have questions, you can email the contact, he answers pretty promptly. For some reason, they don't list all the options under the Apple Airport Compatible section. Re: Wifi antenna
This still requires a physical connection to the card. I'm not keen on making this kind of adaptation. Besides, if I read it correctly, one of the ways to attach the antenna is to go thru the PC card slot? I'm using my slot with a CF card. I was told about, but haven't had a chance to track down, a USB antenna--thin design, could fit easily into a carrying bag. I don't know if these just use the physical connection to grab signal, or if they need software drivers to work. laterHoward -- G-Books is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... If you look at a parts page on the 12 powerbook, the antenna only goes around the bottom and up to the grey tabs on the side of the display. The iBook and Pismo antenna goes all the way around the display, this giving a larger area to receive WIFI signals. Re: Wifi antenna
I agree completely! This bizarre design change forces me to take my iBook when traveling and not my Albook so I can get stronger WIFI connections. Now, my Pismo, because of its larger size and much larger antenna (compared to a 12) is the WIFI champ, but too big to travel with, for me anyway. Re: Wifi antenna
What kind of base station or WAP do you have? If it has an external antenna, you're in luck. There are hi-gain antennas avaiable, sometimes featured at http://dealmac.com for about $10. There are ominidirectional ones and directional. I tried an omnidirectional one first, but since my WAP is at one end of a long house and downstairs, and the place I often use my 15 AlBook is upstairs in a location with some interferrence, that didn't work well enough. I then got a Hawkings dirctional anteanna and that works much better for me. I also bought an antenna extension cable so I could mount the antenna in the optimal location, high up on a wall downstairs and pointing slightly upward. You set up that router as an AP, access point, at another location in your apartment. This will extend your signal. You do have to connect it via ethernet cable to your router My apartment, a duplex with 6 thick concrete floors and ceilings and cinderblock walls, didn't interfere with my Belkin Pre N router until a next-door neighbor installed the same router. I could not get a signal anymore in certain parts of the house, but his came through strong enough for me to accidentally lock on. He had no security and a slow cable service. Fortunately I still had my older Belkin 54g. Creating an AP on that solved the problem. I also got him to secure his network. dan_A http://homepage.mac.com/danauerbach/PhotoAlbum1.html -- G-Books is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and...
