Apple's RAGE MOBILITY implementation in their portables is an incomplete
subset of the chip's capabilities, as specifically mentioned in the
devnotes. What 'unimplemented' means exactly is a question for others as
I lack any more knowledge. However, I suspect . . .

Are there other RAGE MOBILITY cards in the 1gen clamshell iBook? If so,
why can't I find any info on earlier incarnations anywhere? That Apple
doesn't support this decoding feature with the X DVD player is clear, but
does the OS actually prevent other apps from using it? Can it perhaps be
turned on somewhere? Does there have to be a VDplayer in the machine in
order for the hardware (graphics card) MPEG-2 decoding to become activated?

that it's a hardware thing and so cannot be turned on by any software.

The gen 2 clamshells have the ATI RAGE Mobility 128, same as
Pismo, and so _should_ support ADP under X. Anyone care to confirm this
hypothesis?

I can do that, but only with S-VCD as there is no dvdplayer. Or I could
use an image perhaps.
So I'm not clear on your answer to the big question: Under X, does ADP
launch and play something/anything in a gen 2 (FW) clamshell? You mean
you did try X + ADP and it successfully launched? Or you haven't yet but
are willing to try it?

If it did launch OK, even without a DVD-ROM installed, then any standard
DVD ought to play if you install a DVD drive. ADP checks only for
playback support AFAIK, and not for the presence of a DVD drive(?).

K, hold on, I'll test this last question myself:
grabs Lombard (333 under OS9 w/DVD PCcard), pulls DVD EBM, inserts CD
EBM . . .

OS9's ADP launched fine in absence of DVD-ROM drive. For completeness, I
suppose I should do the same with a Pismo under X . . . sigh

grabs Pismo 400, pulls DVD EBM, inserts CD EBM . . .
Yep, X's ADP launched fine in absence of DVD-ROM drive.

Yeesh! :-)

I'd go for the DIY CD-RW solution unless I could make sure the video

too weak for burning DVD movies. For data backup, DVD may very well be

As far as I can tell we on this list have yet to verify if the clamshell

Larry,
The third generation iBooks were Indigo for 366mhz and Graphite for the
466mhz SE. But the Key lime was available in both speeds, 366 and
466SE. This info was on the little fold-up brochures provided by Apple
(I have one somewhere, but can't find it) and is also reviewed in the
December 2000 MacAddict (p. 16, where it says Key Lime glows in the
dark under a black light!)

I think the second generation also had an SE, the 366mhz in Graphite.
IIRC, the standard iBook was 300mhz in Blueberry and Tangerine (in both
first and second generation).

As far as I knew the only SE's were the graphite, or that's what

I know that the second generation came in different speeds but again

Short of looking on the Apple System Profiler/some other processor tell-tale
app, the color would seem to be a good thing to go by... but not absolute.

I had an tangy iBook that I sold a few days ago; I WAS going to give it to my

But before she got it, she wanted me to make it Graphite on the outside. I
have all the Graphite pieces, and the switch would not have been very hard.

I am assuming your iBook does not boot at all?

Re: ibook SE

2004-08-31 Thread larry Zasitko
The graphite SE was made in two versions.
P1
Introduced Jul 1999 and discontinued in Sept 2000
Processor was 300mhz in Blueberry or Tangerine and 366 for the Graphite
SE
300mhz came with 32meg ram onboard and the 366's came with 64meg
Video was ATI Rage Mobility 4 meg on both
P1.5
Introduced Sept 2000 and discontinued in May 2001
Processor was 366mhz for Indigo and Key Lime and 466mhz for the
Graphite SE
All had 64 meg of ram onboard
All had ATI Rage Mobility 8 meg Video
The SE's came with a dvd/cdrw drive
The most obvious difference is that the P1.5's had firewire port while
the earlier ones did not.

First thing to check is to see if there is firewire or not. Then check
the system and see what speed the processor is.

The most obvious difference is that the P1.5's had firewire port while

iBook SE battery stops charging

2003-10-05 Thread Charlie Meyerson
A puzzle:

iBook SE (Graphite clamshell) battery is relatively new (less than six
months) and as recently as last week was holding a charge for at least an
hour. Suddenly -- last day or so -- it doesn't take any charge at all.

New AC adapter, too, and the charge light (where the AC plugs into the
iBook) is constantly green. But the battery remains at 0% and the computer
goes dead the instant we unplug the AC.

iBook FW Battery Update software (booted in System 9, even though we
normally use OS X) tells me that it is not required for this computer.

Suggestions?

Thanks and best wishes,

Charlie Meyerson

Have you tried resetting the power manager? Sometimes this works. Unplug
the AC adapter, pull the battery, and depress the reset button at the
hinge on the right side.

320 MB officially. It may take more, but it isn't supported beyond 320

Re: Poor Quality Video Out on iBook SE (2nd Ed)

2002-07-31 Thread Jeff Lentz

Ian - I feel your pain. Twice in large family
gatherings I tried to hook up my PB to do a slide show
on TV and got only a scrolling display. Turned out to
be set to a European PAL (50hz) format instead of the
local NTSC (60 hz). Figured it out, but not in time
for the two shows, or to avoid Mac jokes.

TV sets are not 640x480, they are approximately
512x392 (I'm not sure about that last number). When I
choose that format off my menu for DVD playing on the
TV, it looks fine. Using a direct S-video cable into
your TV (if you have the input) will be a marginal
improvement, but mostly unnoticeable. I always use
the S-video to RCA adapter with no ill effects.

I can't comment on the games, because most of mine
default to 640x480 on the primary monitor and won't
let me choose to show them on a TV.

Crappy video on a projector is most often because
someone uses the S-video hookup instead of the monitor
video cable. If you still get bad results with the
monitor video cable, do a side-by-side with someone
else's laptop (PC and/or Mac, same cables, same
program, same image, etc.) and report the results. I
missed your original post, but would be glad to try to
help if you can offer more info.

Poor Quality Video Out on iBook SE (2nd Ed)

2002-07-30 Thread Ian Jones

My iBook screen is perfectly clear, but has ALWAYS (since purchase)
translated to a fuzzy, barely readable image through the AV Out onto
a TV screen or through a digital projector. However, a DVD plays
quite clearly through AV Out, so I guess the cable is OK. Happens
under OS 9.2 as well as OS X. Anyone know what the problem is here?

It is weird to have the blurry DVD Player controls on the TV or
projection screen when the movie itself is quite clear.

Re: Poor Quality Video Out on iBook SE (2nd Ed)

It could also be that your iBook is sending a signal more than the TV can
handle. If the iBook is set to 800x600 the TV is made for 640x480. So try
setting the iBook to 640x480.

If the video quality is low, no amount of expensive hardware can make it

Are you using the S-video connection or the monitor connection? If you are
using the S-video, would it not be sending a lower quality image than the
digital image to the monitor? I haven't had any experience yet with these
things, but I would use the monitor connection if I could.
