Re: [OT] The old days [Was:Re: Reminder: LowEndMac lists rules]
Hmm. I worked on the project that put SPSS together. Cards. Stacks of cards. Hated keying those cards; probably two bad ones for every one that came out right. Big IBM 360/67 in a building the size of gymnasium. One day, I loaded a stack in, went into the snack bar, put in change for a coke, pushed the button and the whole bloody system crashed. I was almost convinced I'd caused it. When the system was up again, at least a week later, all our data was interspersed with data from the Stanford Hospital... Sat through hours of classes in Fortran IV. The project finally moved on to the University of Chicago; I was invited to go, too, but then I watched the riots at the Chicago Democratic Convention and decided that was one of the last places I wanted to go. Never touched another computer until I got my hands on my sister's Mac Classic. -- G-Books is sponsored by <http://lowendmac.com/> and... Buying more hardware to do that is not even a problem. Hardware is cheap and amortizable. Human capital isn't. This isn't an excuse for sloppy programming or feature creep, both of which are huge factors in why Office is now 300MB instead of 300KB, but there's also the fact that 300MB today costs a fraction of what 300K did then. Aye, and as a quiet young geeky high school student, I devoured the lot. I built my first two computers from components, got given an Apple ][ (not a +, or //e) and became a dab hand with raw 6502 hex. After reading about the Star and the Lisa, I coded up my own simple GUI which used a joystick because I couldn't get a mouse. And then I bought a Mac, and I kinda lost complete interest in programming ... apart from a brief foray into HyperCard, I haven't coded a thing since. I ended up drifting into interface design & HCI, met Bill Atkinson once (briefly), spoke with (and argued with) Jef Raskin, and had the fortune of working with Alan Cooper for a little while on a project. If you don't like following rules meant for the good of all, unsubscribe. It's not a dictatorship either. That said, there have always been people who top-posted. It's a pain. Courtesy to aid effective communication is the object here. Just as we DON'T POST IN ALL CAPS we have a number of other conventions to extend courtesy as we wish it extended to us. The top posting rules is a lot older than a year. (snip) ing long quotes to the minimum is another courtesy. But, Tim has put his finger on it. If we don't use the rules effectively, people will not read our thoughts. The delete key is a lot easier than scrolling through a lot of repetative junk. "mailing list" is a little vague but it mentions specifically enabling/disabling HTML links, etc, which content makes up 80% of 90% of the body in posts on the LEMlists (long footers). B <http://www.clickz.com/news/article.php/3581301> "AOL announced on January 30 that it will phase out its Enhanced Whitelist service in June in favour of Goodmail CertifiedEmail, which carries an as yet unspecified per-message fee. Until now, a mailing list gets on the AOL whitelist by following good e-mail practices, such as cleaning up dead addresses, making it easy for people to leave mailing lists, and of course not sending any spam. This is all going to be thrown out the window and replaced with the payment of hard currency to Goodmail. People who can afford to pay this fee will have the privilege of reaching AOL subscribers, others will end up in junk folders. Yahoo is expected to follow down the same path." -- G-Books is sponsored by <http://lowendmac.com/> and... His favorite line, whenever one of us would point out the "feature creep" and deadline issues was "it's not rocket science" (his background was actually in rocket science). I'd use the old days of DOS as an example, but that's just too far OT for me. Someone else mentioned MS Word, though, and that's a perfect example of bloat: Quite possibly the most seamless and perfect program I've ever used on any platform was Word 5.1. New Low End Mac email lists
We've created some new email lists, but they're different from the old ones. We're using Google Groups, which means you can sign up, change your status, and read postings using your browser. I hope to eventually move other lists to Google Groups as well. The Macintel list, which covers all Intel-based Macs, went live last week and has 57 members. Once the MacBook Pro ships, we're ready to launch the MacBook List. I've also set up a Mac mini List. Details: Macintel List: http://groups.google.com/group/macintel [EMAIL PROTECTED] Mac mini List: http://groups.google.com/group/Mac-mini-list [EMAIL PROTECTED] MacBook List: http://groups.google.com/group/macbook-list [EMAIL PROTECTED] You can join any of these lists, but the MacBook List will not go live until the MacBooks start shipping in February. Until then, all Mac-on-Intel discussion should be on the Macintel List. Dan the listmom -- G-Books is sponsored by <http://lowendmac.com/> and... Anti-spam and the Low End Mac lists
I just received an email from a subscriber who got a "challenge and response" email from the Cashette anti-spam service. Such services work by blocking email from any address not on the user's white list - which means anyone posting to the list. Our lists are already spam-proofed, so please don't use a challenge and response anti-spam system on the address you use to subscribe to this list. Here's our official policy on these services: "What about anti-spam services? "We already take the steps necessary to keep spam off our lists. Whatever filtering you do with your email software and your email service is up to you. "That said, we take a dim view of anti-spam services such as Spam Arrest that require the sender of a message to respond to a message from the anti-spam service before allowing the recipient to receive the posting. Such a service inconveniences anyone who posts to the list and is unnecessary. "These are all closed lists, so there is no spam. Only those who have requested a subscription and confirmed their subscription are allowed to post. If that is not good enough for you, please don't inconvenience our members by asking them to jump through hoops to keep your mailbox spam free. "Any subscriber using this kind of anti-spam service will receive one warning. If the situation is not resolved quickly, the subscriber will be banned. The burden should be on the spammers, not innocent list members." Remember, one warning. Re: Motorola V400 & iPhoto on my PowerBook G3 via USB with OS X 10.3.5 and iPhoto 4.0.2 Will this Setup Work? Is this not the longest subject line in the history of LEM mailing lists?
does your phone and laptop (usb dongle) have bluetooth. if so you can use10.3.5 bluetooth's utility to access your phone like a storage device-allowing you to back up, load pix, text, ringtones, etc. you must first set up bluetooth in sys. prefs. and you can add a bluetooth menu item on the menubar. hope this helps, rama. Most mailing lists have some kind of moderation. Some are more actively moderated than others. A few are moderated to the point of censorship (but not this one, IMHO). For those curious, I can think of two OS X lists that are minimally moderated: http://www.themacintoshguy.com/lists/X.html http://www.tit-wank.com/mailman/listinfo/osx-nutters The former is a more minimally moderated list that is still focused on OS X trouble-shooting, while the latter is just talking and very little trouble-shooting. If people feel that they want less restrictive list moderation, I think people should have the choice to either find a forum they are more happy with or even start their own forum. Of course, if you start your own little forum, you might find it tough to play the role of a moderator without seeming heavy-handed to some list members. -- Eugene Lee eugene at anime dot net -- G-Books is sponsored by <http://lowendmac.com/> and... Open lists?
Does anyone have any addresses/sites for lists that are more open and nice. Its more fun like that (in the style of uk.comp.sys.mac). This list is going exactly the way vintage macs did before the new nanny came along. I for one can't be arsed even lurking on a list like this. If you do, please email me at josh_watsonalexandria.cc, as I'll be unsubscribing from this dull list when I get to work. Cheers, Josh -- G-Books is sponsored by <http://lowendmac.com/> and... Bugbear virus and LEM lists
A former member of the PCI PowerMacs list was alerted to the presence of a virus on a message purportedly sent from pci-powermacs. He emailed the following: >This morning I received an email (apparantly) from >><[EMAIL PROTECTED] > >Our virus scanning software, carefully updated by our professional >paranoids, alerted me to the fact that it contained a bugbear a virus in >an attachment (filename cotter.dat.scr) > >The email message itself seems real enough, until you look at the dates; >look at the bottom of this mail. A little research on the bugbear virus turns up the following: 1. It installs itself in the Startup folder of any version of Windows later than 3.1. 2. It attempts to use any SMTP (email sending) resources on the infected computer to create mass mailings. 3. It attempts to install itself on other computers on the network. 4. It attempts to create a backdoor on the infected computer that the worm's creator could use to access the computer in the future. 5. It will send emails from "safe looking" bogus email addresses (such as [EMAIL PROTECTED] instead of @maclaunch.com) to addresses it finds. It also seems to quote part of an email from that user ID to make the message look more authentic. You may be tipped off by a strange date, an unusual return address, or your virus checker going off (Windows users should always run virus checking -- users with other operating systems cannot be infected by this and most other viruses). These messages are not from our lists or our server; the bugbear worm can only be propagated by Windows computers. However, at first glance they may appear to come from us, so Windows users should be careful when checking list messages. And we can all wonder when Microsoft is going to get serious about secure computing. The level of insecurity that gave birth to tens of thousands of worms and viruses in simply unacceptable, yet over 90% of all computer users take it in stride as something normal they have to deal with. Thank goodness we only use Macs for production and *nix servers for our site and mailing lists. -- Dan Knight, president, Cobweb Publishing, Inc. <http://cobwebpublishing.com> <http://lowendmac.com> <http://digital-views.com> <http://digigraphica.com> <http://lowendpc.com> <http://reformed.net> In a world without walls or fences, who needs windows or gates? -- G-Books is sponsored by <http://lowendmac.com/> and...
