thanks. but i did try the obvious. the cables are both good. had 2
HDs connected, no problem. also booted from an IDE HD and system
still would not see DVD when it was the only thing on the PCI/SATA
card. in fact, it wouldn't even see the ACard when only the DVD was
attached, tho it does see the ACard when nothing is attached, and when
the boot HD is on the other SATA port. just won't see the DVD.

and the DVD drive is brand new Pioneer DVR-218L, right out of the box.

Microsoft is the gatekeeper. MS controls the primary PC platform
specification. NO interface is added without MS' approval. If the
interface isn't fully supported by Windows, it dies.

My understanding is that USB is and always has been one of Intel's

Sortof. It was a group effort: Intel, Compaq, Microsoft, NEC, DEC, and IBM.

Microsoft has no skin in that game other than they have to at
least not get in the way of supporting USB 3.0.

What good is a fast interface if the OS cannot keep up with it? See above.

Apple actually has a lot more latitude than Microsoft since they
control what is or is not allowed to work in their systems.

True, to a point. The problem is what happens if Apple throws the
party and noone comes. Look at how few Firewire devices there be.

But I expect you will see USB 3.0 showing up on Mac's simply because they
will be using Intel chipsets. And since USB is Intel's, their chipsets
*are* going to support USB 3.0.

Perhaps. Apple is loathe to go backwards tho. As they proved over
and over - IDE, USB 1, USB 2, eSATA - they're in no rush to adapt
so-so interfaces. It is more likely that they'll go with something
like Light Peak, and either offer adapters for the old interfaces or
tell us to suck it up and buy new peripherals.

The USB support is in the Southbridge, and so far Apple has been

Intel is not expected to support 3.0 for a while, as it is

I've been using a FirmTek SeriTek/1S2 in my MDD and a Sonnet SATA ( which from
all the reports I've seen is a rebranded Seritek anyway ) in my DA for two
years now.
My MDD has a 75Gb Raptor hooked up to it with OS10.4.11 and I also tried one of
my friends SATA Matshita optical drives too just because I could. It booted a
Tiger disk just fine but I didn't do any extensive testing preferring my
already installed Pioneer Superdrive instead.
One problem I encountered was that the Raptor would not fire up or be
recognised if I used the SATA cable but if I connected it via the standard 4
pin Molex power cable - no problems. I tried a couple of these other cables too
that I borrowed from a friend and none of them worked. I had him come around
and we were able to test it with his multi-meter and all the correct power
outputs were there so I still don't know the problem.
You also don't tell us the model drive. Some of the older ones came with an
IDE/SATA bridge that can be problemmatical. Newer ones don't.
Some PCI SATA cards can have hard drives attached to them but you cannot boot
from these drives as well - just something to be aware of.

There's no OS X support for USB3 yet, and may never be. Apple is
supporting Intel LightPeak as a successor to USB1/2 and
Firewire400/800, so it's possible that USB3 support may never

USB3 will certainly have a lot of vendor support even if LightPeak

To fully upgrade to 9.2.2 you need to do each increment separately,

SATA DVD drive on PCI/SATA controller?

2010-05-30 Thread ah...clem
hey all! i've been using an ACard 6290M PCI/SATA controller in a QS
for a while now, and it works beautifully with a 1TB Seagate (boot
disk) connected. but i just tried to connect a Pioneer DVD/CD drive
w/ SATA interface to the second SATA port on the ACard, and it is not
recognized, and it makes the video all glitchy when i boot from the
SATA HD on port #1. all the latest drivers and firmware updates from
ACard were already installed. the optical drive is good, because it
works if i run it thru a SATA/USB2 bridge. even tho i have a USB2
card w/ an internal USB2 port, that is not a permanent solution
because the USB2 will limit xfers to a maximum of around 12MB/s
(approx 8x DVD speed). does anyone know of a PCI/SATA controller that
will work with both SATA HDs and SATA optical drives? thx.

It is readily available from numerous sources. Do a Google product
search for "Epson C12C802522"

Well I've found non available from any of the sellers using that

I suggested a Google "product" (or Shopping) search, not a general

I cannot believe that the Epson Duplexer is not available from any of

Use netscape to download Classilla, which is a currently maintained port of

I believe this is called G5 thermal runaway when the fans go full
blast. It's not related to sleep or network AFAIK. Some people have
said Norton software is often responsible, so if you have anything
from Norton, uninstall it. You can also try resetting the PMU:

Re: G5 Wakes up Screaming

2010-05-30 Thread GLT
I'm having a problem that sounds pretty similar. Occasionally while
sleeping, my G5's fan(s) (I can't tell from outside which ones) start
screaming away at full speed. When this happens, though, the system is
also (apparently) still sleeping but won't wake up. Nothing goes into
any of the log files after this point, which appears to confirm that
the system is indeed frozen.

However I don't have an AirPort network--just 10BaseT. I do see some
network events in the log files but haven't tried yet to correlate
them with the fan issue.

Have you learned any more about your problem yet?

Download a different browser. For freeware browsers, the most modern
available is the Wamcom 1.3.1 Mozilla from 2003:

To fully upgrade to 9.2.2 you need to do each increment separately,
going 9.1, 9.2.1, and finally 9.2.2. See:

A B&W with a G4 should really be max'd out RAM with a Radeon video
card running Tiger 10.4.11 with an OS X browser. With MacOS 9.x ALL
the browsers are so antiquated that you'll never have a good
experience on modern websites. You've got to upgrade this Mac ASAP or
live with the bad consequences.

Re: G3 Blue and White

2010-05-30 Thread JoeTaxpayer
Agreed. I'm still loving the MDD G4, and for less than $200 you can
find dual 1.25GHz, 2GB memory, and a Leopard OS.
G4 or G5 will not run Snow Leopard, which requires an Intel chip.
If I were to give a warning, it would be that you need a USB 2.0 card,
all of about $10, and that's the only needed upgrade.

I had beige G3 both with 500MHz sonnet chips. No regrets, but they
were getting long in the tooth.
I've made the claim that if you look at MIPs/$, the G4 is at the peak
as far as I'm concerned.

G5s:
http://lowendmac.com/deals/best-power-mac-g5-prices.html

Upgrading an old G3 B&W is IMHO not worth the money. Also look at Geekbench
for their performance scores.
http://www.primatelabs.ca/blog/mac-benchmarks/

Every stock G4 above 400 MHz is performing better and has better upgrade value
concerning AGP graphics cards, RAM and hard disks. The motherboard of the
original G3 B&W (Rev 1) was a complete mess, with the screwed up large hard
disk support and the UDMA bug… From what I hear up to the Sawtooth the
motherboard wasn't improved much, except for bug fixing.

BUT if it is fun for you, and if you don't know what to do with your money…
WHY NOT upgrade an old G3 to new glory? It won't run stock Mac OS X 10.5
still, but this can be another adventure to enjoy!

(although I don't press the hotsync button, I only leave it there to
charge...).

I too have a DA (733 MHz processor), which I got for free (it was
about to be trashed...) along with a 17'' Apple Studio Display. It
seems like a very nice machine, and I believe it will serve for many
more years as my brother's computer (of course, I have to get its RAM
upgraded, and maybe throw a USB 2.0 card into it...). I really can't
believe someone would actually trash a perfectly working machine! :O

Why not Safari 3.0.4

2010-05-30 Thread Bruce - in Orlando
I just tried to go to my high school reunion social networking site
(which is on Shutterfly). I seems that it requires Safari 3.0 or
higher, EXCEPT 3.0.4. Naturally, that's what I have on my MDD running
10.4. Being a naturally suspicious person, I want to know why this
site would hate 3.0.4 so much before I download an upgrade just to
make Shutterfly happy. Does anybody know? Should I hate Safari 3.0.4
too?

Re: G3 Blue and White

2010-05-30 Thread PM7500
I wouldn't be so quick to upgrade a blue and white at this point. By
the time you add up the cost of a CPU upgrade, additional RAM, better
optical and hard drives, etc, you're going to be looking at the price
of an early G5 Powermac, which will outperform the upgraded G3 in
every way. You'd be better off to spend your money there rather than
maxing out the G3. The only reason for maxing out the G3 at this point
is either for sentimental reasons or just to prove that you can.

Re: G3 Blue and White

2010-05-30 Thread PM7500
You can use Quartz Extreme on PCI video cards. Even Rage 3D cards
support Quartz Extreme. It's Core Image that you can't get in most PCI
cards, but the nVidia FX5200 PCI that is normally found in the Xserve
G5 does support both. The problem with the FX5200 is that it doesn't
support 3d in classic, so if you play a lot of games in classic you're
better off with a Radeon 9200.

Re: G3 Blue and White

2010-05-30 Thread PM7500
I have had a Sonnet G4 1ghz in my 7500/100 and a G3 400 in my 7600/132
for years and have had no problems with them. Your information is
false. Sonnet wouldn't have gotten away with making as many CPU
upgrades as they did over the years if they had been shabby products.

Re: G3 Blue and White

2010-05-30 Thread PM7500
You're wrong. The upgrades for the beige G3, blue and white G3 and the
Yikes! G4 are ALL ZIF processors. There is no other way to mount a CPU
in those machines. The earlier beige machines had a dedicated CPU
slot.
