The purpose of the dish washer is that it does a better job of cleaning without
physical damage due to brushing and rubbing. As far as the green crap goes the
waste of the compnent contributes a lot more wasted energy than the renewable
water and electricity you use.

BTW use the top rack away from the heating and drying coil.

Come on John, show some respect. Calling other's good intentions "green
crap" is unkind and unnecessary. You very well could have made your
point without use of the insult.

Where did you get this silliness? Even a commercial dishwasher only
uses 1.5 gallons per cycle (see this link: ). People who want to save water and go easy on the
environment use dishwashers. Hand washing dishes in the kitchen sink
uses a lot more water than a dishwasher.

If you want to go the absolute easiest on the environment, don't wash
your dishes at all. Lick them clean.

Reminds me of that actress who says you should never use more than one
square of toilet paper, to save trees. I can't remember her name, but
her nickname is now Stinkyfingers.

I tried that in Terminal and nothing.
It is now not being shown with System Profiler so it either died (not sure
if this is it as I saw the CD-ROM icon show up last time I asked about this.
Didn't eject then either) or a cable somehow came loose.

help, i'm going deaf!

2011-01-18 Thread Jeffrey & Daile Engle
here's the problem...

While using my powermac G5, I use ichat, skype and other video conferencing
software. When I get an invite to chat, I have to turn my (system) volume way
up to hear the caller. Then when the chat is over, heaven forbid if I had
itunes playing a song earlier, because the song is now 1400 decimals!! and the
race is on to turn down the volume before my ears burst and the neighbors call
the police for noise pollution.

What I need is a way to control iChat/skype volume without altering the system
volume? any way to do this??

TIA, from

lookupd is is a unix daemon that provides a 'central clearinghouse' for many
tasks in OS X:

This may or may not be related to the crash.

THIS is the vital piece of info...it's telling you exactly that the system,
specifically the PMU is forcing the shutdown. Cause = -122 means SOMETHING to
the folks at Apple, but they're not sharing, as far as I can tell.

It could be a faulty PSU, it could be a faulty logic board, it could be a video
card drawing too much power. You need to find out what cause= -122 means. A
cursory googling does not reveal info.

There's some sort of bug in lookupd, a kernel process in Tiger 10.4
and lower. A 3rd-party fix has been written, called "Unlockupd" which
should stop this problem. Lookupd was removed from Leopard 10.5, so
this fix won't help with Leopard or Snow Leopard, it's only for Tiger

I was experiencing this error on my PowerMac G5. Going thru this post
resolved the issue for me:

What finally resolved it for me was reseating the power connector on
my motherboard. YMMV.

help in SW ohio?

2011-05-25 Thread ah...clem
probably a long-shot, but here goes . . .
my 60-something brother-in-law just switched from windows PC user to
his first Mac, a QS933 running 10.5.6, and i'm asking if there is
anyone in the springfield, OH area (drexel st) who would be willing to
go over and spend an hour or so (i guess?) showing him how to navigate
the OS and the apps, install a printer, set up Thunderbird for his
email client, and maybe some basic shortcuts that will help him
appreciate the MacOS. i sent him a book and i've been helping him
over the phone, but my schedule doesn't jive with his. being 400+
miles away, it's frustrating that i can't just go over to his place
and answer all his questions at once. he catches on to things pretty
easily, tho, and i'm sure he would offer refreshments to a visitor.
anyone willing to help please contact me off-list and i will connect
you to Fred so the two of you can work out a date and time. thanks
from both of us. - john

Darwin is formal name of the Unix underbelly of OS X.

The environment you're seeing is pretty much what you'd get if you
booted into Single-User mode (cmd-S held down), but you've logged
into your account instead of "root".

Something be foo with the boot, obviously. Darwin booted, but then
the stuff that makes up the full environment of OS X didn't load.
Could be a pram setting issue (that told it to stop there). Could be
a general file system problem on the boot volume. Could be corrupted
boot files.

(stop when something works)
Replace your PRAM Battery.

Try zapping your pram / resetting your nvram.

Try booting into single-user mode and running AppleJack.

Try booting on an OS DVD and repairing the boot volume.

Try booting from another HD. If that works, then the problem is the
drive, not something else in your system.

You know the drill.

Do one step, see if it's fixed, if not, go to next step:

1)Disk Utility>Verify Disk and Repair Permissions.

2)Run a maintenance utility like Onyx, Cocktail, or Applejack.

3)Reinstall the latest Combo Update.

4)Archive reinstall the OS.

Notwithstanding the spec of your mac and the HD's I have experienced this
'type' of problem when running multi boot systems in G4 Sawtooth and QS
models - especially when drives larger than 128GB were installed. Have you
got all three HDs installed or are the problems there with just a single
drive?

Re: ibook G3 help

2010-02-19 Thread Richard Gerome

Did you install any other OS like Jaguar, Panther or Tiger??? What you need
to do is hold down the "C" key before you boot it up and make sure the disc is
cleaned off too with no scratches, then try doing the install... I have 3
Clamshells and I have done this with running Jaguar and OS 9.2.2 and I load OS
9 first doing a clean install then I would run the 2 disc's for Jaguar the same
way and it never erased 9 (I even think I did this the other way around doing
Jag first and it still put both OS's in?) I would do the install again and make
it a clean install so it cleans anything that might have been installed the
first time... Good Luck!!!

Re: ibook G3 help

2010-02-20 Thread Mark Sokolovsky
I have the same exact laptop as you do, and I know what to do. Are
you sure it is an apple supported hard drive? Most power macs don't
just take any hard drive to run on. It has to be a specific hard drive
that is compatible specifically with your iBook. Also, did you check
the IDE controller card i know this may sound impossible, but there is
a possibility that there is something wrong with the IDE controller
card, or it's because the IDE controller card doesn't support larger
capacities like that. Keep in mind that they shipped with 3.2GB hard
drives, and on a power mac G4 graphite AGP graphics they shipped with
40 GB Hard drives, but they only supported up to 127GB of HDD space.
If the way i am thinking is correct, there may be a very slight
possibility that your ibook doesn't even support 15GB hard drives. I
am only trying to help and list the possibilities.

Erm, hard drives for the PowerMac G3/4 computers only need to be
PATA. You can partition a 160GB drive down to 128GB and it will work
fine, same thing happened to my windows laptop (from 2005!) but linux
saw the whole drive, hmm winXP bug...

Help identifying g4 cards

2010-04-27 Thread Jack Countryman
Along with a recent group of g4 towers came several pci cards. One was an
Adaptec scsi card that seems to have problems (card shows in system
profiler, but devices that work on other machines do not show up, mount,
etc.), but there is also an ATi pci video card with DEF port, DIN8 TV out
port, and a vga style monitor port, plus a "Smart Modular Technologies"
modem card. I tried what seem to be the FCC # on them in the FCC
identification page and neither # is recognized. How else do I find out who
made this modem card, where to get Macintosh drivers or software to make
them work (the ATi web site only has windows drivers), etc.? Thanks

New video card help...

2010-06-24 Thread Mark Sokolovsky
Hello everyone, I need help on this one, so try your best. I recently picked
up myself a nice deal on a new video card. for $60, I got myself an ATI
Radeon 9550 AGP 8x with 256MB of DDR2 Video RAM. I am pretty much fed up
with even my 64MB Nvidia Geforce 4 MX/MX440 ADC card from my dual 1.0Ghz
quicksilver, because is still doesn't perform what I call "Perfect" under
Leopard, so I got myself 4X the video card for this upgrade. I need to know,
how can I get an ATI Radeon 9550 with 256MB of VRAm to work happily on a PM
G4 Sawtooth? I don't want to do board soldering, I just ant a simple
solution that works. Your help will be much appreciated. I tried google,
Bing, Yahoo, Ask, and all of those other search sites, and nothing really
helpful came up because it didn't WORK.

I need networking help

2010-06-27 Thread Mark Sokolovsky
hello users of Lem's G3-G5 list, I have a networking problem that I have
been trying to resolve since the early half of june. On my PM G4 Sawtooth, I
have a 320GB SATA drive plugged in through firewire, and I have the entire
network of Mac OS X Systems being able to see it. I have other computers
such as my iMac G3's running tiger being able to see it, my iBook clamshell
running Jaguar being able to see it, but then there's my Power Mac 9600
running Mac OS 9.0.4. I have been trying to get to connect my PM 9600 to my
Sawtooth through my network to be able to use the 320GB HDD, but so far, no
luck. Any advice on this one?

ESata to Sata help...

2010-07-18 Thread Mark Sokolovsky
Hello everybody, i bought an external enclosure for my 320GB seagate drive
about 2 months ago, and then received anther one from tyler. I have the
320GB Seagate in the enclosure right now, and while I was in the process of
plugging in the new 320GB Sata drive I got, i couldn't help to notice that I
had an eSata plug on my enclosure. I have a few questions about that:

1: Is there a connector cable that can plug into an eSata enclosure and plug
into an Internal Sata drive?
2: If I have a SATA plugged into the Esata port and inside the enclosure,
will Leopard see both drives or mount them as the same drive but 2
partitions?
3; Is what I'm doing possible?
4: Where can I get myself a 2.5" Bracket for the HDD and an eSata to Sata
cable?

Thanks in advance, any help is appreciated. If this works out, I will have
720GB of HDD space on my PM G4 sawtooth.

Boot from your OS X install disk, change all passwords to new ones
(don't give root a password), and you're done. This time, use a
password for your/administrator account that can't be guessed so
easily. "^)

Oh, and put your OS X install disk(s) under lock and key.

Almost done.

The Keychain login password isn't changed by changing the admin
password from the installation DVD, so you'll need to login with the
new password, and then open Keychain Access and change the Keychain
login password to the new password.

1) Open Keychain Access located in Applications/Utilities, and select
the keychain in the Keychains list (click Show Keychains if the list
is not open).

2) Choose Edit>"Change Password for Keychain 'login'." (The name of
the keychain in the menu matches the name of the selected keychain. If
you selected the keychain that unlocks when you log in, the name you
see is "login.")

3) If the keychain is locked, type the password to unlock it. (note:
this is the new password set from the installer CD/DVD)

4) Type the current password for this keychain. (note: this should be
the old admin password unless you'd changed it to have separate
keychain & admin passwords; if that is rejected, try the new password,
which if it works, no change is necessary; if no password works, the
Keychain is likely corrupted and you'll probably need to delete the
keychain and start again to create a new keychain & password)

5) Type a new password (normally the same as the admin password unless
you want to specify different passwords), then type it again to verify.

6) Click OK.

Dan,
once you have the Mac set back as you want it, why not try psychology,
Tell your daughter that if she tries to bypass the parental controls
again you will take the Mac away and replace it with a PC running
Vista Home !! This should put the fear of god* in her and prevent any
further transgressions.

There is also the option of acquiring a mini/iMac for her use - to be repaid
either from chores around the home, or a weekend job (if old enough) and
letting her loose to experiment - subject to parental oversight...

Internet Connection Sharing Help

2009-05-13 Thread Mac G4

I am trying to share my internet connection but am having issues.
I am running 10.4.11 on Intel iMac.
What I want to do is the following:My internet comes in via USB (yes thats
right), I want to share that with the built in ethernet out to my wireless
router ethernet port. Then have all my other devices connect to the router.
Side Note: I have done this successfully with a windows XP machine.
My problem is when I go to system pref's on the Mac and click sharing, share
from USB to Ethernet it seems to be setting my ethernet port IP to
169.254.246.111 and a subnet to 255.255.0.0 based on what the profiler says. I
think this is my issue as I would expect (based on windows experience) that it
should be 192.168.0.1 and 255.255.255.0 respectively - but I am not sure.
I tried using the auto DHCP on the ethernet port under Network, but that
doesn't seem to work either.
The funny thing also is that on my other machine a G4 with 10.4.11 it won't
even let me share from the USB to the ethernet - it doesn't give me any 'share
to' ports for some reason.
Any Ideas?

Help with Powerbook G3

2009-06-14 Thread gart...@aol.com

Greetings to all & thank you in advance for any help provided.

I have a bronze keyboard Powerbook G3. What I'm looking to do is have it
wireless capable either via a wireless card, or a USB wireless adapter. I've
tried one at a regular computer store & the OS 10.4 would not recognize it at
all. That was a USB adapter that didn't have drivers for the Mac. I would
prefer not to go the the local Apple store in the local mall to buy anything
from Apple I can get from a 3rd party. So I'm looking for suggestions as to how
to make my laptop wireless for the least amount of $ I can get away with. It
has 330 megs of ram, a 333 Mhz processor & a 100 GB hard drive in it.

OT: Hackintosh help needed!!!!!!!!

Hi. I realize that this has nothing to do with this list, but I was hoping
that someone would know something about building a Hackintosh. I have a Dell
Dimension 3000 2.8GHZ P4. I successfully loaded 10.5.1, but want to go
higher. I can't for the life of me get ideneb 10.5.6 to work. When i try to
install in verbose mode, it says "still waiting for root device" I heard
somewhere that if you enter where the HD is located that it will work. I did
that at the start rd=disk0s1. That got me past that only to stop at
something like: Kernel Version darwin kernal version etc. Thanks! I am
very new to this so any help is really appreciated.

Have you tried the VGA port on the TV? I know that when I connected
mine (with a Radeon 9000) to my tv it didn't work at first because the
video was set wrong. I was able to use VNC (I'd previously set it up
for remote control) from my laptop to change the video output to what
my TV (Proscan) used (which is 1024 x 768...the computer detected a
widescreen resolution 13nn x something, iirc, I only saw it flash for
brief moment.)

I was going to try a DVI-HDMI solution when I got around to getting a
cable. Maybe I'll wait to see if you get it working ...

I've used a DVI-HDMI cable both from a couple of MacBook Pros and from a
G4 Mac Mini. The latter has a Radeon 9200 as the built in video (I
believe it is). In both cases it worked right off with our Philips TV.
It does take a while for the TV and computer to negotiate the screen
size and such but it's no more than 20 seconds.

I agree it could be the wrong video mode and using VNC is the way to
check it. If you have a Leopard machine (besides the one in question) a
VNC client is built in. The VNC server is built in to recent OSX
versions and is activated in the Sharing System Preference.

Allan,
I think the problem is that there are 2 DVI standards, DVI-A (found on
older kit), and DVI-D (the newer standard)
As HDMI is a digital standard, I think that it will only work with DVI-
D as the earlier DVI-A standard is analog rather than digital.
However many cards are DVI-I (integrated digital & analog) these may
or may not work.
Wikipedia has a good article at
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HDMI#Compatibility_with_DVI
That may help point you in the right direction.

I believe this is exactly right, the problem is likely related to the
type of DVI port.

To complicate things, a friend that installs multimedia systems
professionally has told me that he's had many cheap DVI-D-to-HDMI
cables not work at all, and that simply replacing the cable with a
higher quality cable solved the problem completely. I asked him if the
symptom was no signal at all, and he said yes, the problem was some
cheap cables were completely defective and incapable of ever working.
He stressed that in his experience, scrimping on the price of a DVI-to-
HDMI cable was not a very good idea.

Also, the output resolutions of some video cards don't match the
inputs necessary for the TV without using some extra software like
SwitchResX or DisplayConfigX. These are not programs for casual users,
they can screw up your display and may be difficult to rectify if
things go wrong.

What do you mean it REFUSES to boot (little pickets walking around the
computer :) )?

You cloned it using what?

Try booting with the option key held down and select the new drive.

Realize that if your old HD is dying the data on it may well be corrupt
and therefore your copy will also be corrupt if so. You are better off
making a clean install to the new drive, installing the apps then
copying your user folders over.

Re: Help! HD Issues

2009-08-28 Thread Mac User #330250

Hi!

In addition to the advice from Clark you could "update" the cloned
installation with the original installation CD/DVD to make it work again. If
the data really is corrupted then installed Applications may be broken too,
but again you could reinstall them. Your user data may be partly working,
partly corrupted.

Maybe the Master / Slave settings are causing the control issues?

I would try setting your new drive to Master, and removing the old one
completely.

Then let the system "find" the drive on its own on its main ATA bus.

Later, choose the drive in System Preferences > Startup Disk for the
next Restart.

Sounds like the old drive was master and new drive isn't, the new
drive needs the master present on the ide bus?

If that's not the case then

Zap the pram then reselect the new boot volume.

And I think when booting if you hold down opt-cmd-shift-DELETE, you
will cause OF to skip the default volume and seek for another.

And holding down the option key, (I think that's right), will tell OF
to let you select.

And you could always just disconnect the failing drive, so OF doesn't
find it...

Meant to also say ... As long as you CCC cloned it correctly, it

Did it appear in CCC as "This volume will be bootable"?

Set the new HD to be Master, I'll bet you have it set to Slave.

Could this be a Master/slave/cable select HD jumper issue?

When you try just the new disk, is it set to master and attached to
the end connector of the cable?

Are the drives identical make/model? Not all drives use the same
jumper block pin-out.

Depending on the age of the drive, if there is no slave, you might
have to use a "master without slave" setting.

Different brands of HDs use completely different jumper locations, so
if you're "copying" the location of the jumpers from one drive to
another, that could be completely wrong. You need to get the jumper
setting locations from the diagram printing on the HD itself, or from
a user manual for the EXACT model of HD you own.

No. You've got to select the "Partitions" tab in Disk Utility, and
then use the "Options" button near the bottom to see the three
partition schemes available (GUID, Apple, Master Boot Record). Use
Apple.

Subject: Camera Driver help

Just got a new digital camera (Fuji FinePix A220) and it is really
messing with my work flow and I'm hoping for some help. Running
10.4.11 on a DA.

Both of my older cameras (the Nikon I just replaced and a floppy disk/
memory stick based Sony Mavica) would show up on my desktop as soon
as I plugged them into a usb port. I would then browse the memory
card just like a HD and drag off the photos I needed.

The Fuji does not. You need to import using iPhoto, Image Capture or
Graphic Converter, then save. Since I have so many different folders
that I need to save photos to, it is easiest for me to browse the
memory card directly in the Finder, drag the photos to where they
need to go, then work on them from there.

When I connect the camera I see the following:

USB PTP:

   Version:1.00
   Bus Power (mA):100
   Speed:Up to 12 Mb/sec
   Product ID:0x01fe
   Serial Number:592D3031090824C5559UB21118
   Vendor ID:0x04cb

PTP stands for Picture Transfer Protocol. Wikipedia says it is
supported by Apple, but I am guessing at the iPhoto level, not OS.

Anyone have any ideas? Macam doesn't help (did not think it would,
but thought I would try)

Len

Hi Len,

Use a USB card reader - it saves hammering your camera's battery as well.

I have an old Lacie that does not see the card at all. The card in
the camera is a SDHC 8GB card. My old 2GB standard card from the
Nikon shows up using the reader I have, but I can not see all the
files on it.

Maybe a more modern reader will help. I will keep an eye out.

I just had the very same problem (my old card reader wouldn't read the
new 4gb SDHC card I got), picked up a new reader from Computer Geeks
for $13 including shipping. <http://tinyurl.com/yfn6x6d>

Had I looked at the Big Lots where I got the card, I may have been
able to find a reader for less; thought they're spotty on supply,
obviously. Local dept stores and electronics places all wanted $20-$30
or so.

Correct

Use a flash card reader. For cameras that only support PTP this is the
only way to access the pictures as on a disk.

Instead, you'll save a LOT of time if you keep an eye out for a USB
2.0 PCI card instead of using that 12 Mbps USB 1.1 internal USB port.
The lack of USB 2.0 could possibly be the ENTIRE problem you're having

Re: Camera Driver help

2009-10-03 Thread stewie

A USB 2.0 card for sure.
Like you I also have a DA but using Jaguar instead of Tiger.
I bought a USB2.0 PCI card first and then a 7 port powered hub.
Having a powered USB2 hub makes a lot of difference too not just for
your problem but other mounting/connection issues as well.
For my Kodak camera that also takes SD cards I bought one of these USB
SD card readers...

>From memory $2 plus $3 shipping to here in Australia.
Very quick and easy to use and the reder icon just appears as an icon
on your desktop.
Make sure you get a reader that can recognize 2-4-8Gb cards at least
as some of the older ones only go up to 1Gb ( I'm unsure the size of
your card ).

HELP!!! Beige PowerMac G3

2009-10-25 Thread Joss

I've had this PowerMac G3 for several years unused because first I
couldn't plug in the monitor and it was very difficult to find an
adapter. Finally I succeeded and then discovered that the keyboard I
had needed USB and the PowerMac had none, so I eventually got a card
(which I still haven't installed). The unit has been basically stored
through all these years because I was very busy working insane hours -
and had being driven crazy by the nightmare of dealing with microsoft
viruses on my pc - until I'd reconfigured it so many times that stress
erased the part of my brain that permits me the choice of doing
another microsoft reconfiguration. What a relief! Then I converted
to LInux Ubuntu which helped tremendously to reduce the trauma of 24
years of coping with microsoft software... (after buying and playing
with the first Sinclair, my first true computer world love affair was
the Atari 1040 and then I switched to the Mac 512 etc but my business
involvements required me to work in the PC environment which removed
me from the human race for quite awhile - I became a robot manipulated
by the machinations and mind control of microsoft. I'm ashamed and
penitent but I admit it . I am a fugitive from the microsoft robot
gang. (Movie soon to be released ...)

Anyway in 2004 this orphaned G3 psychically reached into my heart (at
a garage sale) and reset my robot heart into a human one which been in
a "pining for Macintosh" coma since 1982. The paradigm shifting earth
shattering experience that broke the hopelessness spell which had
bound my spirit to the lord of the microsoft underworld which had
instigated this miraculous turnaround was the sudden explosion of
neurons in my brain by its invasion by the lightning bolt sentence "it
still works perfectly and is running OS10 server and also functions
well as a desktop" and "the only reason we are parting with it is
because we have upgraded to a newer model". I was in apple-mac love
again. And so even though I couldn't plug it in and really get it
running etc etc it kept the dream of reentering the World According
To Apple alive in my abused psyche for another 5 years. Scene Change
to the year 2009... my son got me a Mac Mini 2.33 and my life began
again - 10 months ago. "It was 7pm on a Sunday and outside my window
delicate snowflakes gently floated and swirled magically with the odd
gust of wind when... " Well, you get the gist of it (it's all iln
the movie)

Reborn into the reNEWed Age of Mac with the arrival of my new (OLD
mini Mac) my life has taken on new meaning and direction...

I was too embarassed at having had this brick taking up space and
gathering dust for five years to be able to just say:

I'm trying to figure out if I should plug in the USB card and see if I
can actually get this giant computer running. Can anyone tell me if
there's anything worthwhile that can still be done with a G3 PowerMac
that warrants my exerting any more brain cells and physical work to
see if this machine actually runs, or whether I should just junk it.
I'd really appreciate some clear understanding because each time I'm
just about ready to let this dinosaur pass on to its well deserved
reward... I hear "something"... that makes me think that maybe I can
still do something with it. Please HELP!!!

HELP! newbie G3 user

2009-11-13 Thread Gary Conrad
Hello, I was "given" a G3. 400mhz

I have no Idea how to proceed. No HD, I installed a 15 gig and have no
Apple keyboard and mouse.
I have a USB keyboard, and a USB mouse. A monitor that works.
When the machine boots up, there is a "?" and a smilie face and that
is it.
I have a lot of RAM PC133 and PC100, the machine came with both.
A MacFriend has sent me the OS I can use, (not here yet)

Question: What RAM is the one to use, and How do I identify what I
have got?(the computer)
I used Macs before and had to abandon them due to the
workplace.(yuck)

I am at a standstill until I know what I have got.
I will try to find a mouse and keyboard, can I use the USB ones or
not?
What is the best OS to use, and more importantly what will make me
happy again?

Thank you,

Gary

Need help understanding webcam differences

2010-11-02 Thread Jonas Lopez
Need help understanding webcam differences

Picture this on your G4, the webcam local picture is just not clear - reason is
400k vs 4M pixels. A 640x480 pixel image printed at a size of 6.4 x 4.8 inches
has a printing resolution of 100 PPI, just look at several public webcam sites
to see which cams produce very clear, brilliant color, well lit images, but
then here is my question.

The kids wave to us, their hands moving rapidly in the wave, but all we see is
a blur or with some cameras, the wave area pixelates, but the remainder of the
pix is clear. What is the cause of this?

Can the Apple tablet or phone camera appear on my G4 and will it be any better?

Determined to have good webcam on my G4, but locked out by
Apple application that refuses to let me use my cameras.

Any ideas appreciated,
JML

Help - what does this mean?

2010-12-18 Thread DLC
Greetings all,
I little help in discerning a splash page on boot-up I've not seen
before. I gave my daughter an upgraded G4 Quicksilver (1.5GHz single
CPU, running leopard). It has an ATI Radeon card in it, a rather nice
one iirc, 9500, w/ 256Mb RAM.
She sent me a cell phone photo of a picture she now gets on boot-up, a
little picture of the ATI card (w/ the ATI logo to its right) with the
Mac not proceeding with the boot-up process. This is the initial page
one sees at startup, so I suspect something nefarious with the card.
Any one ever get this, and if so, what does it mean?

Thank you,
Dana

You could route the audio through Audio Hijack Pro using Soundflower,
and use the AU/VST effects to boost the signal but it may be more
distorted by the time it gets to you. Can't hurt to try if you own AHP,
Soundflower is free.

Actually, I read that as a sound pressure change of 1400 times with unspecified
units. log10 (1400) is 3.1461 which would be a 31.5 db, or so increase in
perceived volume. That's a quite reasonable figure, annoying but not
dangerous. 1400 db would be ridiculous and the folks would be complaining
about holes in the roof.

Maybe somebody at Wittenberg?

Editing software question. Please help

2011-09-30 Thread vanessa
Hi everybody,

I am working on a donation video project using an old- but hardly ever
used, Mac G3. The editing software is from the same era and is called
RADIUS/DIGITAL ORIGIN. This combination worked very well when the
video was captured directly from the camera. Recently a BR-3000U deck
was added to capture the raw video but this combination is not
working. It seems like the editing software/ RADIUS doesn’t interface
with this recording deck.

Has any of you successfully used this combination before? Do you know
if an older version of Final cut pro or other editing software that
would work with the BR-3000U and Mac G3 ?

Thanks a lot in advance for any tips.

Vanessa

YMMV, I guess. I've never had issues with VLC, and I use it daily.

Hi Diane,
Yes there are actually plenty of PCI and PC Cards that are actually
compliant with Airport. The trick is to look for any card that has a
Broadcom chipset in it (I use a Motorola WPC1810GV2 PCI card, for example).
Airport recognizes these cards quite easily as Airport Extreme compatible,
and many do not even need the help of 3rd-party drivers.
Some do need drivers, such as IOExpert's 802.11b Driver, found at:

http://www.ioxperts.com/products/80211b_X.html

The site lists a bunch of compatible cards that have been tested to
"known-to-work" with their driver.
Once upon a time some site posted a rather large list of PC vendor cards
that actually worked with Macs, both Airport-only and 3rd party
driver-enabled, but I can't find it straight out. Maybe somebody else can
assist; but at least be assured that there is hope, Diane!

Best regards,
Dana

Re: Help! Looking for wireless!!

2008-08-30 Thread Ralph

Diane,
Dana gave you some good specifics to look for. If you want to make it
simpler, what I would do is go to ebay and search for PCI airport.
There were 29 cards that came up when I searched. Look them over and
only buy from someone with a high rating. I am not one of the sellers,
and I won't benefit from your doing this.
The problem with going to a store and looking for one of these cards
is that nobody tells you what chipset they use on the package.
Manufacturers change chipsets on the same model number, so it is hard to
even say what to buy. The only safe thing to buy in a store is an Apple
brand PCI airport card, if you can find one and are willing to pay that
price. Most of the ones I saw on ebay were under $30 shipped. If you
are patient and wait for a good deal, I bet you could get one under $20
shipped.
Good luck,
Ralph

Re: Help! Looking for wireless!!

2008-08-30 Thread diane
Hi everyone! Ended up with a Linksys WMP54G. Now the chart says it's
Airport native but it is not that I can see. I am not sure of its
version, nothing on the box said and I forgot to check System
Profiler.

Doing a google on that model led me to an Apple support discussions
page which had a link to a "WirelessUtilityCardbusPCI" program. This
does work fine but it's a little hokey in the sense that it opens on
each boot and shows you the wireless networks you can hook up to. For
this user I'd like to have it a little more transparent, but hey, the
card is working, it seems to be strong and it wasn't too expensive.

Thanks for all the links and ebay tips. I may end up taking my time
and getting one for myself in the future. For this we needed it right
away.

We ended up with a Digital Audio machine, DP533, 768mb of RAM for $60
plus the wireless card and Tiger. Perfect to get someone up and
running on the net with minimal cost. The fun part of setting the
machine up was that it had an Open Firmware password installed which
was a royal PITA to remove.

Thanks again for the help!

Diane

AirLink101 AWLL-3026 (ZyDas 1215b chip set) or AWLL-3028 (Realtek
8187b chip set).

Both have MacOS drivers available for them, although not from
AirLink101 ... you have to go to the chip set manufacturers.

10.3 driver for PPC Macs.

10.4 driver for Tiger or Leopard on PPC or Intel Macs. Even
Hackintoshes. Especially Hackintoshes.

These USB sticks, with their drivers, have all the security features
one would want, and are dirt cheap ... $6 on sale for the
AWLL-3028 ... the AWLL-3026 has been discontinued.

These come with USB extension cords so you can move 'em around for
best reception.
