Re: [Audyssey] Eamon and exploration, my thoughts,

2009-01-06 Thread dark
To be honest sean, to blame lack of exploritory games on graphics doesn't
seem fair.

going back to the 80's we have examples like Metroid on the nes, and
Turrican on the Amigar which had a massive exploration focus despite being
A, graphical and B, symple.

Now, graphically, while as Tom's artical suggested there is indeed a bit of
a surfit of kill everything games, and I don't just mean action, i
mean roleplay grinding, there are stil examples, for instance the
recent witcher series (which many of my rp orientated friends are pleased
with), which have this factor, though it is getting to the stage where
you have to specifically go out and look for those sorts of gamesor series,
rathern than just expecting it.

Claiming the graphical medium does not have desired elements which occurred
in a few good old text adventures just doesn't make sense, heck, my
brother has bought all of the Phenix right games for the Ds, which are no
holds bard interactive fiction mystery games with a graphical user
interface.

As to the tech topic, - I really don't see how technical expertees
relates to gameplay at all.

I myself do not find information technology interesting in it's own
right, or at least not more interesting than any other subject, and
when compared to astro physics or biology for interest value, probably less
interesting.

i only really became interested in computing, - as I believe Michael
said, at the age of 18, principley because I had obtained the DD manuals on
Cd and wanted to work out how to read them, which required me to find out A,
how to access files from a Cd, and B, how to load different sorts of text
file formats in programs other than word.

From that point i've generally worked on a basis of i wish to do X, so will

work out how to do X which is I believe what your saying.

If there is a convenience factor in installation and configuration, it's
just an improvement in the technology.

There will always be people who know how to program seriously, just as there
will always bee people who know how to weave cloth.

The fact that people don't have to spend hours each day working on looms is
simply a factor of increasing technology, nothing more, nothing less.

To automatically classify more convenience as bad is imho just as
problematic as automatically saying all convenience is good (says someone
who hand grinds his own coffee).

Beware the Grue!

Dark.

Re: [Audyssey] Pinball classic?

2009-01-06 Thread Jim Kitchen

Hi Thomas,

Yeah, it has been at least twenty some years since I have played a real pinball game
as well. I liked the older, slower machines with bells etc. The newer ones with
digital sounds, digital score boards, multi levels, multi balls etc were just too
much for me. Of course the tunnel vision closing in probably didn't help.
grin

If I ever get to making a pinball game like I have always wanted to do, it will
have the old bells and bumper sounds etc.

Last night I had fun getting code to return a value of 0 to 20 depending on how
much or not I depressed the gas peddle. It just for now then plays the
homerh0.wav through homerh20.wav engine sound file. I will cut the stock car
sounds a bit later. But it was a fun start.

BFN

Jim

But officer, I was only trying to gain enough speed so I could coast to the nearest
gas station.

[Audyssey] Air Hockey

2009-01-06 Thread ari

Hi all,
I have two questions, the first one is OT, so please answer that directly to
me. Because I have recently become interested in ice hockey:
1. Sorry, but I don't know how American radio works, and the amount and
names of your stations are quite confusing. If they are allowed to do this,
I would love to listen to an NHL game, so can someone please tell me if
these are broadcast over the internet, and, because you guys have so many
stations, which station could I hear one on if possible.
2. Now to the games question. My dad and I were trying to see if I could
play air hockey, but it wasn't that successful because, as you guys know,
the disk blows and bounces all over. My question is, as a totally blind
person, do any of you guys play it successfully, what strategy do you use.
Do you think, if none of you have an answer, it would somehow help to create
a disk that could make some kind of buzz or beep while it's flying, would
that be a good way to play near evenly, or equally against a sighted person?

Thanks
Ari

Subject: [Audyssey] Air Hockey

Hi all,
I have two questions, the first one is OT, so please answer that directly
to me. Because I have recently become interested in ice hockey:
1. Sorry, but I don't know how American radio works, and the amount and
names of your stations are quite confusing. If they are allowed to do
this, I would love to listen to an NHL game, so can someone please tell
me if these are broadcast over the internet, and, because you guys have
so many stations, which station could I hear one on if possible.
2. Now to the games question. My dad and I were trying to see if I could
play air hockey, but it wasn't that successful because, as you guys know,
the disk blows and bounces all over. My question is, as a totally blind
person, do any of you guys play it successfully, what strategy do you
use. Do you think, if none of you have an answer, it would somehow help
to create a disk that could make some kind of buzz or beep while it's
flying, would that be a good way to play near evenly, or equally against
a sighted person?

Thanks
Ari

Re: [Audyssey] Air Hockey

2009-01-06 Thread dark

Hi Ari.

Unfortunately in most arcades where I've seen tables, they don't let you
bring your own air hocky disk, so you'd have to modify whatever disk came
out of the machine.

What you need is a small, constantly beeping buzzer I think which you could
slip on to the top of the disk, a bell would be no good sinse it'd only
ring when the disk was violently hit.

I'd recommend checking somewhere like a gadgit or toy type shop for a small
toy or keyring with the requisit sound, unfortunately many such things
(such as key finders), usually have to be activated by pressing a button
which would obviously be difficult if you were playing hocky.

Perhaps you could mutilate a toy to get it's buzzer out?

Btw, I'm just having thoughts here which may or may not be helpful,
sinse I'm afraid I personally just look for a table with a highly
contrasting disk, which admitedly can be a bit of a pest to find.

Hth though.

Beware the Grue!

Dark.

[Audyssey] Table Games was Re: Air Hockey

2009-01-06 Thread ari

Hi Ian and Dark,
The problem with that is, it takes the fun out, because you're stopping the
disk from flying around, which is supposed to happen. Dark, let's for a
moment forget about the fact that you need to use the disk that came with
the machine, or let's pretend the owner said you can modify it, is there an
answer? I've also wondered about this when it comes to things like table
football, or even table tennis and pool, because a lot of the time it's
really rubbish to not play properly, or have to sit out while the sighted
guys have the fun. For snooker, I have heard that some blind people label
the balls in braille, like y for yellow, p for pink, r for red, which is
interesting. For me, though, as I don't have ready access to a pool table, I
have trouble even shooting a ball with a long cue, but that is because I
can't practice, I don't think that that's got anything to do at all with
being blind. The only problem I think a blind person has, it's impossible to
get a visual perspective of the table, but, if you're playing with a sighted
person, you can ask if there are any balls in your way, and if you're
playing with another blind person, then you'll have to feel very carefully
around the table, which sometimes takes ages.

Re: [Audyssey] Air Hockey

2009-01-06 Thread ari

Hi Mich,
But I can't see how you could have played air hockey in the propper sense,
because the wind always changes direction and blows the disk all over the
place. I know you could try and hear how it bounces and try and hit it, but
wasn't that kind of a hit-and-miss thing, because the disk doesn't bounce
predictably, because of the wind it might blow to the total opposite side,
and, until it bounces, as far as I can tell, you're none the wiser?

Hi Kevin,
Yes you can get knocked out on the easy difficulty level by being hit by the
Troll.
The Troll takes some of your energy away each time he hits you with his
club.
So it depends on how much energy you had as to how many hits it takes to
knock you out.
Once you reach a very low level, you will be visited by your dad to take you
home.

I think the only thing that can kill you right now is the Dementor.

Hi Kevin,
The high score tells you how much energy you had when you quit.
The chapter is another name for level.
In the game you can go from chapter 1 to chapter 11 in one step so I thought
chapter would be a better term.

Plus the game is based on a series of books which use the chapter term.

moment forget about the fact that you need to use the disk that came with
the machine, or let's pretend the owner said you can modify it, is there
an

For me, though, as I don't have ready access to a pool
table, I

have trouble even shooting a ball with a long cue, but that is because I
can't practice, I don't think that that's got anything to do at all with
being blind. The only problem I think a blind person has, it's impossible
to
get a visual perspective of the table, but, if you're playing with a
sighted

person, you can ask if there are any balls in your way, and if you're
playing with another blind person, then you'll have to feel very
carefully

around the table, which sometimes takes ages.

[Audyssey] air hockey again

2009-01-06 Thread Ken
I play for fun but I never do well. Since air is already coming up and
supporting the puck, I don't see why a whistle couldn't be built right into
the puck--a small hole on one side of the puck for the air to blow through,
and on the other side a dip and slit type deal like on the mouthpiece of a
recorder. It would still be a bit hard to localize the sound, but I think it
would be doable. In the mean time, try my air hockey game at Kara's web site.

If they are allowed to do
this, I would love to listen to an NHL game, so can someone please tell me
if these are broadcast over the internet, and, because you guys have so
many stations, which station could I hear one on if possible.
 2. Now to the games question. My dad and I were trying to see if I could
play air hockey, but it wasn't that successful because, as you guys know,
the disk blows and bounces all over. My question is, as a totally blind
person, do any of you guys play it successfully, what strategy do you use.
Do you think, if none of you have an answer, it would somehow help to
create a disk that could make some kind of buzz or beep while it's flying,
would that be a good way to play near evenly, or equally against a sighted
 person?
 Thanks
 Ari

Hi Kevin,
Yes you can get knocked out on the easy difficulty level by being hit by
the Troll.
The Troll takes some of your energy away each time he hits you with his
club.
So it depends on how much energy you had as to how many hits it takes to
knock you out.
Once you reach a very low level, you will be visited by your dad to take
you home.

I think the only thing that can kill you right now is the Dementor.

2009-01-06 Thread Ron Schamerhorn
Hi Ari

I agree air hockey is quite fast paced and stopping the puck is not what
I'd consider in the spirit of the game. However I don't know as though
there would be anything to modify the puck with. My reasons would be it
would have to stand up to being knocked around and also could a person hear
it and react quickly enough. What I try and do is just keep my paddle [or
whatever it's called] in front of my goal and hope. Certainly it's kind of
hit and miss but not sure what else could effectively be done.
For pool the best is for whomever your playing to show you the cue ball
and carefully show you where the other balls are in relation to it. Any
sort of beeping thing would not be impossible but difficult depending on the
pool game being played. I.E. spots and stripes. For snooker I could see
the use of Braille on the balls, but I'd imagine it would throw off the shot
in some way if only slightly.

Re: [Audyssey] Table Games was Re: Air Hockey

2009-01-06 Thread dark
Perhaps there is a gap in the Vi accessaries markit for something which is
the size of a watch battery and makes a continuous beeping sound.

I've played pool myself, but only again because the yellow balls contrast
with the table.

I'm not sure how you'd do snooker pool without some sort of overview feature
or feeling the table as you suggest, but for games with a single small
ball, for instance golf, a continuous stick on buzzer would be the
thing I think.

The problem again would be that such a device, despite being symple to make,
would have it's price raised by a good few hundred quid as soon as you say
the word accessible

While not a direct solution to the issue (though possibly handy for golf), I
once saw an infra red buzzer. You had a small sensor which you stuck on
things, and a control linked with an infra red ray. Press the control, and
if the sensor was within a set distance, it'd beep.

Very handy (I myself rather fancied it for marking a seat in a theatre or
train when I went off to the loo or to grab a coffee), however the three
hundred and fifty pound price tag (which I believe given current exchange
would be somewhere in the region of eight or nine hundred Usd), deffinately
and absolutely put me off.

Beware the Grue!

Dark.

I think a few Dementors show up but in special situations.
spoiler

When you enter the staff room and open the cabinet, it sounds like a
dementor shows up.

It is really,
more

a Bogart that you can chase away with,
even

the ridiculous spell.
But a patronis charm will work too.

I would have to check but I think in the easy difficulty level if you
enter the forbidden forest you will meet two Dementors.

Hi Kevin,
Yes you can get knocked out on the easy difficulty level by being hit by
the Troll.
The Troll takes some of your energy away each time he hits you with his
club.
So it depends on how much energy you had as to how many hits it takes to
knock you out.
Once you reach a very low level, you will be visited by your dad to take
you home.
I think the only thing that can kill you right now is the Dementor.

Perhaps there is a gap in the Vi accessaries markit for something which is
the size of a watch battery and makes a continuous beeping sound.

I've played pool myself, but only again because the yellow balls contrast
with the table.

I'm not sure how you'd do snooker pool without some sort of overview

thing I think.

The problem again would be that such a device, despite being symple to

While not a direct solution to the issue (though possibly handy for golf),
I

once saw an infra red buzzer. You had a small sensor which you stuck on
things, and a control linked with an infra red ray. Press the control, and
if the sensor was within a set distance, it'd beep.

Very handy (I myself rather fancied it for marking a seat in a theatre or

Hi Phil.

Once again, English vi access proves it's status.

I've just been on the rnib catalogue site (sinse my mum has decided to try
Uno and we needed a set a braille cards), games and hobbies lists many
catagories such as sewing, and playing bingo, but about the most vigorous
game they've got provision for is snakes and ladders.

It really does hack me off sometimes how litle support there is in the Uk

I'd absolutely love a bleeping beach volleyball, just for mucking about

To me, this would be cheating. You're not supposed to stop the puck with
your hands. I have heard that some blind people can hear the air moving the
puck, although I haven't noticed it. I haven't played the game in years. I
helped with the drilling of an air hockey table using a pattern from an
issue of Popular Mechanics for a neighbor's kids. I got fairly good with an
electric drill during the process. (grin)

Hi all,
I have two questions, the first one is OT, so please answer that
directly to me.
My dad and I were trying to see if I could
play air hockey, but it wasn't that successful because, as you guys
know, the disk blows and bounces all over. My question is, as a totally
blind person, do any of you guys play it successfully, what strategy do
you use. Do you think, if none of you have an answer, it would somehow
help to create a disk that could make some kind of buzz or beep while
it's flying, would that be a good way to play near evenly, or equally
against a sighted person?

Thanks
Ari

[Audyssey] Game Controler

2009-01-06 Thread djc
I just bought a cool game controler. It's called Phillips Retractable Game
Controler. The model is sgc2909 and Walmart is selling them for 15 Bucks
here in the US. I am not sure if you can buy these online but they have
them in the stores. The game controler has 2 joy sticks as well as a cursor
and other buttons. It does have force feedback which is really cool. It
works fine with top speed and it appears to work with railracer but not as
well as it does with top speed. It connects to your computer through a USB
Port.
Please Join Me from 9 to midnight Eastern Each Saturday for djc's
Jukebox on either:
http://ultrastreams.us:9660 Or http://sc8.spacialnet.com:22734/

[Audyssey] Fallthrough review in audeasy?

2009-01-06 Thread dark
Hi.

Does anyone happen to remember which issue of the audeasy mag Michael's review
of fallthrough was in?

we're back to updating the audiogames.net database, and it'd be quite nice to
link to the review on the audiogames.net page for fallthrough.

I admit I'd also rather like to read it myself too.

I found the stratogy guide in issue 36, handy.

Hi Bryan,

Snip
The question was why accessibility to the blind was
such an abhorrent concept to mainstream game designers. I refuse to say
alien since
we've been trying to explain it to them for years and most refuse to
listen.

End snip

Well, as I have said so many times already most of it comes down to
numbers of potential end users and money. If a feature like
accessibility isn't going to sell millions of extra copies, and it costs
them x to produce that accessibility it isn't going to happen. It is
simple supply and demand unfortunately.
Another issue to consider is simply that accessibility is not taught in
college courses either. Anyone can pick up some programming credits at a
local community college, tech school, etc but that will generally
consist of programming theory and basic training in language x. None of
that training is hands on instruction on ways to make your applications
accessible to a blind user. In fact, this lack of understanding among
programmers about accessibility needs is why the Gnome foundation has
build accessibility directly into the core Gnome 2.x desktop. Apple has
also set about building accessibility features into the core Cocoa API
for Mac OS. The concept on Linux and Mac now is rather than putting
accessibility into the hands of the third-party developers that
operating system core APIs do what is necessary by default leving the
third-party developers to concern themselves with writing the
application and let the various access features built into the API
handle the access needs for the application by default.

Re: [Audyssey] Copywrite and abandonware

2009-01-06 Thread Bryan Peterson
True enough, but I'm certain that if these mainstream game designers were to
find out where blind gamers congrigate and conduct some accessibility
surveys in those communities they would probably attract many more potential
customers. People who weren't gamers up until then but had the interest
might be encouraged to come forward with their ideas. I just happen to feel
that their lack of understanding is as much their own fault for not
bothering to find out as it is ours for not being able to enlighten them.
And again, we've been trying to enlighten them for years without much
success. So while I understand their concerns I don't have much sympathy for
them.

I have to say between my communications with Lucas Licensing and my
talks with Sony Entertainment I have become totally disgusted and lost
all respect for big name corperations of any kind. Any time I have a
valid concern, issue, suggestion, etc I get blocked by some peon

This seems to absolutely hold true for game access. The larger the

Been there done that. Main reason is major companies have hired a bunch
of flunkies to man the phones, e-mail, who's job must be to discurrage
contact with them. The minute you mention access issues with the large
companies they thank you for your suggestion and say whatever to get you
off the phone as soon as possible. The more honest ones come out and
tell you legally they can't take suggestions for their products and
services and give you the big kick in the pants to get lost.
In my experience smaller companies and definitely the open source
comunity are more willing to at least here you out. On Linux if i file a
bug someone looks into it fairly rapidly. If I make a suggestion someone
on the development team will state if it is possible, feasable, or at

I coudln't agree more. Like I said my brother and I had a talk about game
accessibility yesterday. We got to discussing old computer games lik
Gobblins and Pirates! both of which titles I would love to see made
accessible. And those are probably prime titles for remaking. And since
Pirates! was created by one guy if it was possible to contact him we might
be abl to get his blessing for creating, if not an exact clone, then at
least a game in the same style.

have to write
or use a custom soundloader program which played the sound back on the
 sound card.
Playing one or two sounds at a time was about all you could expect out
of those
programs. You definitely couldn't create a game with full 3D virtual
effects etc.
Not to mention the way Dos programs use the system's hardware are so
alien to Windows

didn't exist at that time.
In short we are talking about rewriting the game from scratch. That is

way to make such games like that both accessible and playable on a

In short. If they don't give you specific permission to use their

illegal to do so. No answer from a company is the same as no in the eyes

Fair enough tom,
I admit my basis for thinking Pop could be accessible was more based on the
gameplay than the hardware, sinse it could be done with comparatively few
sterrio effects, but it does make sense that it'd be harder adding things
that were not already present in the game than writing from scratch.

I suppose that sinse I use an exceptionally convenient pre-configured game
launcher (which also contains innumerable ways to change the graphic and
sound sets of the game as well as the level, time remaining etc), I forget
just how old the game is, even though that custom launcher is actually
running a pre-configured install of dosbox.

Just because it looks and runs like a windows program, I was thinking that
it was as compatible as one as well, which I admit was a mistake.

I stil hold to the concept idea though, as a way of creating a complex
exploration based platformer with a more free form structure than we've seen
thus far.

Hi Milos and all,
You need to understand that in the eyes of the law failing to get direct
permission to share such files is illegal. It doesn't matter if the
company didn't give you a direct no answer. No answer is the same as
saying no until there is some written or oral agreement made between the
parties that gives you permission. Since I am a list moderator I am

Hi Bryan,
True, but companies don't see it that way. Sony's immediate reaction to
building in more accessibility features like talking menus was something
to the effect thanks for the suggestion but that their polacy was not to
except ideas, suggestions, etc from end users of their products. If the
developers/engineers came up with the idea it would be possibly used,
but if not, then that feature had to be disregarded. I felt their
polacies were dcompletely anal and they were intentionally ignoring
accessibility suggestions do to some corperate polacy or other. Nor
would the let me talk to their developers to shoot programming ideas by
them. Totally closed comunication wise which means we don't have an easy
route to get to the people unless we go public by drawing attention to
the matter through television, radio, papers, etc.

Personally I think they just don't want to be proven wrong about us. I've
seen that mindset in other areas of life besides just gaming. To be quite
honest as aaggressive as they are I'm surprised that the NFB hasn't taken a
stand on this issue. After all they were the reason AOL became accessible,
not that it seems to have remained so.

[Audyssey] Winfrotz restore game?

2009-01-06 Thread Robert Montowski
I have been playing Planetfall for a few hours now with WinFrotz TTS.
I have been saving games as i moved along in the game.
I took a break and came back and tried to start over and load in my last saved
game.
I choose open game from the file menu.
I pick the folder where the games are stored in..called SAVE.
I hit enter on the folder.
Winfrotz tells me there are no saved games in this folder.
there are 8 saved games in this folder.
Can anyone tell me how to load a saved game?
I would love to pick up the game where I left off.
thanks

should but havn't not that we have wated a while.
I'd still like to get an answer though.
However someone must be done maybe a direct approach.
Firstly someone local try call them.
If this does not work, we should distrobute and see.
If they decide to complain we can point them back to the attempts we have made
to actualy get answers.
But we are just users, who cares about those when it comes to it.

Re: [Audyssey] clango player

2009-01-06 Thread dark

Well we could, but we'd be wrong.

A screen reader is intended to give access to on screen text in just about
any context text could appear, within programs, in windows, even
in flash pains if text is used.

Klango player does not do this. It provides self-voicing access to a number
of handy services, most of which are unique to the player such as the
Klango forum.

You could not for instance, pick up a text adventure and expect Klango
player to read it, sinse that's not what Klango player is for.
