Re: [Audyssey] got my new solid state drive in
Well Gigabit did come out with a partial talking bios but that is as far as the got was the test output menu. And that is how it's ben for the past 25 years with no change in sight for the future. At 02:31 PM 11/17/2015, you wrote: Given current technology, BIOS cannot be accessible. The reason for this is that no software can be loaded at this point, so its impossible to have speech up and running. The only theoretical way to cause bios to be accessible would be if the manufacturer specifically wrote a screen reader for that individual BIOS and motherboard, but somehow I doubt that happened. Technically the one that lasted for six years still works, since I put Vinux onto it after I couldn't find my XP disc's after reformatting the system after I got a rather nasty virus that I was having a ton of trouble removing. I can't wait to have a solid-state drive in the new laptop that I'm getting soon. It's going to be awesome! It'll be my first system with eight gigs of RAM and a 2.9 Core i5 processor; it's the architecture that's one generation behind the new Skylake processors, but that's fine for me. Re: [Audyssey] got my new solid state drive in
Back in the dos days of x286 and 386 some manufactures stored the bios on the harddrive. they did away with that because if you did a total format on the drive. Your bios went and your computer would lock up. Now they do give control to video card, screen and keyboard. you always had access to the harddrive. But if you want to add or change some hardware. You still have to do that within the bios. For example you can not change the boot order form any os. Now with your newer laptops you can't even turn off the boot locker or internal hardware finger print stored in the cpu unless you go through the bios. And those are the 2 things that make it hard to go from win 8 back to xp or even win 7. The cpu finger print is what programmers use to lock there software to a single computer and that is making game piracy very hard to do now. Re: [Audyssey] got my new solid state drive in
There are programs that will allow you to access the bios from your operating system. Award was the leader in this field back in the dos days. I know other bios manufacturers also have programs that will allow access to the bios settings after the machine is booted. You can even save/restore your bios to/from backups you've saved on the computer. Admittedly, I no longer use windows, so gaining access to the bios doesn't concern me as much as it used to, since under linux I can usually force settings via command-line parameters to the loading kernel when absolutely necessary, so I don't really need to access bios these days (except when I build a new machine, but there's usually sighted assistance for those times) Do a search of google, and I'm certain you'll find programs that will help you gain access to bios settings for various motherboards. And, since overclocking your cpu can help with gaming, I think this topic fits right in with audyssey. On Tue, 17 Nov 2015, john wrote: Given current technology, BIOS cannot be accessible. This is quite fascinating; I think I'm going to be doing some of those searches in the near future. Thanks for the info. I do think, however, that the distinction between the BIOS itself and programs capable of accessing the BIOS is one that should be made. - Original Message - From: Travis Siegel <tsie...@nfbcal.org To: Gamers Discussion list <gamers@audyssey.org Date sent: Wed, 18 Nov 2015 13:28:19 -0500 (EST) Subject: Re: [Audyssey] got my new solid state drive in There are programs that will allow you to access the bios from your operating system. Re: [Audyssey] got my new solid state drive in
Also, I forgot to add in my last email that, out of the box, the FKeys perform functions like raising/lowering brightness, muting sound, volume up/down, etc. This was the way it was on my HP laptop that died. On that laptop, I could press the function key along with any of the FKeys to not use the media or brightness controls. I may leave them as they are for a while on the Lenovo. If I set my NVDA key to caps lock, it shouldn't be too hard. I couldn't do this on my HP, but it might be possible; I tried to get the FKeys to function normally when pressed on their own, but when pressed with function, do their media/brightness things. I could either turned off or turn it on. I couldn't switch the rolls around. Agreed. I wonder if there's a master list somewhere of software for motherboards that can be accessed in this way? How accessible are these programs, generally? The Blind Access team is proud to present podcasts covering the Windows and Android operating systems, as well as demonstrations of accessible games and software! Re: [Audyssey] got my new solid state drive in
I would imagine overclocking would be especially risky if you're using these programs - a traditional test of the stability of an overclocked processor is whether it manages to boot the OS without hanging or otherwise throwing a fit. This is less likely nowadays because CPUS are designed to avoid this kind of hanging, but I'd still take it slow (or perhaps I should say will be taking it slow - this promises lots of potential experiments). - Original Message - From: englishride...@gmail.com To: Gamers Discussion list <gamers@audyssey.org Date sent: Wed, 18 Nov 2015 11:42:14 -0800 Subject: Re: [Audyssey] got my new solid state drive in Wow! This message is wrong in so many ways, but we'll just take the simplest, because as I said this topic is getting rather off the subject of gaming. "part of the os". No, no, no. BIOS is *not* part of the OS, because it is impossible to have an OS running when you're in BIOS. BIOS runs *before* the OS is even detected. I suspect you're talking about a configuration utility of some sort, but if so, you need to be vastly more clear about this, because right now all you're doing is spreading misinformation. -- From: "Shaun Everiss" <sm.ever...@gmail.com> Sent: Wednesday, November 18, 2015 4:11 To: "Gamers Discussion list" <gamers@audyssey.org> Subject: Re: [Audyssey] got my new solid state drive in Well what do toshiba do to make their bios work. Hmmm I had no idea that anyone else had done a configeration for their boards. Toshiba's ones work in dos you had to go realmode, in windows 95 there were programs in latest windows 7 and 8 they were a control panel. I'd imagine that they would evolve with the times, not sure if the universal app of toshiba's stuff would be accessable but who knows. I havn't used that many updaters for anything bar my toshiba and or asus and both seemed ok though once started things would crawl a lot for a while till they were done. The rest of the stuff I did do required a bit of sight to upload a datafile but that was about it. I havn't used any programs on desktops. In most of the newer units you only need to go bios to change what the function key does and check everything is detected and it usually is, and or overclock things. in the older boxes you could increase shared memmory to the video card, turn on ando off bits and bobs set passwords etc. In most cases especially with modern systems you shouldn't need to bother about this though I must admit I'd like to fiddle one day. Re: [Audyssey] got my new solid state drive in
Hi, I have similar experiences. I now avoid HP like the plague myself because their systems tend to be very below the par on average, and I know others with similar experiences. My dad, for instance, had a HP laptop for about six months, very barely used, and it died. So I don't generally buy HP anything if I can help it these days. Ah. I avoid HP like the plague now. The first and only laptop I got from them kept having issue after issue, where both of my Dells, except for one problem, have run for years before giving up the ghost. One lasted for six years, and The other lasted for five years and seven months. Cloning can be extremely accessible (google drive image xml). As far as installation goes, given that you're working with an ssd, you should be able to plug it in yourself. Pay careful attention to the cables plugged into your existing disk, track them back to their source, and find matching ones for the ssd. Once that's done, you should be able to boot your machine, clone the existing drive (make sure your current partitions are smaller or of an equal size to the ssd - this is the most complicated part imho) and remove your current hdd (or just reformat it). The part you will certainly need sighted help for is getting the system to boot from the ssd once its installed; do a google search for "change boot order" or something similar. P.S: This applies to desktops only. If you're on a laptop, get a professional to do it for you (especially because laptops don't usually fit multiple drives). [Audyssey] got my new solid state drive in
hey i got my new crucial.com 250gig solid state drive installed. I am very impressed. My computer runs much faster now. Sometimes NVDA would lag and it would take awhile for games to load even in windows10 pro 64bit on this hp elitebook 6930p laptop. But now its so snappy and quiet it is unbelievable! It cost $79 from amazon. everything from my favorite audiogames to screen readers to software voice engines load so much quicker. ms-word loads in less than a half a second. Its almost like I turned my computer into a partial super-fast tablet or notetaker! so guys if you want your audio games loading super super fast and if you want your laptop or desktop to feel like a superComputer then I very much recommend getting an ssd and using the free macrium reflect software along with a USB to sata cable to clone the old spinning hard drive to the new ssd. your whole computer and audio games and screen reader will thank you for it! Re: [Audyssey] got my new solid state drive in
Hey, how accessible is the cloning process. I am seriously considering getting an SSD for this machine. But to pay someone to do the cloning, can get expensive. Let alone, I'm probably going to have to get someone to put the drive in. I don't know my way around the insides of this machine, and I don't want to blow any fuses or worse, the microchips. [Audyssey] Got It was Need Help with She Noire
Hi Dark, Thanks for the suggestion. I tried a few combinations, and finally managed to get the game to proceed. I know what you mean about not being able to remember the solution, though the last item I tried was the cutters, so that's one thing. Guess this wasn't a bug after all, but I agree, it could've been handled better, in that it would've been nice if the game had said something like No, try again. At least now I can continue. Re: [Audyssey] Got It was Need Help with She Noire
Hi Kelly. Glad you got it fixed. I must admit while I enjoyed Noire for the atmosphere and mechanics and at least some of the plot, the game was brought down badly for me by inconsistancies both in the writing and the logic of some of the puzzles, requiring you to use items you supposedly didn't have and occasionally just being a bit odd with the puzzles. Plus, the plot has some holes though that is likely a matter to discuss when you've finished the game. Still it was fun and I do hope we see another Noire game in the future, though I'm looking forward to when Ticonblu's sf adventure game flarestar has an Ios version as the description of that one sounded definitely interesting. Re: [Audyssey] Got an offer for any game developer.
Hi Michael, right. That's perfectly understandable. As a child of the 80's E.T. wouldn't be E.T. without the sounds and music. However, to do it right I'd also have to look around for a copy of the movie as I have not actually watched it in like 20 years. I believe my son has a copy in his bedroom, and I'll have to ask my wife if she can find it. Cheers! On 5/22/2012 1:17 AM, michael barnes wrote: Hey, Thomas. I like your idea on the game! Please describe the project in as detailed a fashion as you can, and also give me at least rough estimations on the points above. I'll be happy to evaluate and potentially take on the project. Re: [Audyssey] Got an offer for any game developer.
Hi Michael, Well, could you please let me know which Atari game you are interested in. This does sound like something I'd be interested in doing depending on which Atari game you are talking about. I'm something of a fan of the Atari myself so certainly would be interested in working on a free lance project like this. As you may or may not know I grew up playing the Atari 2600, and am personally familiar with most if not all the games ever developed for the console. So as a result I may be one of the few developers who has first-hand knowledge of how to develop this game, and make it as close to the original as possible. So I'm curious to know which Atari game you are interested in, and of how much money you propose to put forward for development expenses etc. Plus it would be helpful for you to specify a time frame/schedule for the project so I can work around my own personal schedule to meet your stipulations etc. Cheers! Re: [Audyssey] Got my xbox 360!
yeah this is how it works, but it can still be played by the blind. for one thing, the stem cuts out whenever you miss a note. the music is also charted in a way that makes sense. it's hard to explain it here, but there are patterns and such that you get used to when you play rock band a lot. It takes some getting used to, but many blind mainstream gamers are already used to this whole trial and error thing lol - Original Message - From: Paul Lemm paul.l...@sky.com To: 'Gamers Discussion list' gamers@audyssey.org Sent: Friday, March 09, 2012 1:27 PM Subject: Re: [Audyssey] Got my xbox 360! My gamer tag is dreads93 if the spilling of that does not work try this draids93 dont remember how the person who helped me set it up spelled my gamer tag. Re: [Audyssey] Got it!!!!
Hi Tony. yes, World of legends is indeed a text game. assuming I did not make a mistake when writing up it's entry on audiogames.net, when reading the description, just before you get to the description of the game it should say features text For most games, it will say either features sound or features sound, text many other games which people have recommended to you are indeed full audio games which do not use text, such as those from http://www.gmagames.com/ and http://www.pcsgames.net/ The only bad news of course, is that on a dile up connection, the more audio a game features, the longer it will take you to download. [Audyssey] got it working
Hey all. i got sd registered. figured out why it was acting like that. it was looking for the id of windows as in xp and probably earlier and since vista stores its files differently, i couldn't find it, so i looked on the net and found a .reg file that fixed the issue. --- Gamers mailing list __ Gamers@audyssey.org If you want to leave the list, send E-mail to gamers-unsubscr...@audyssey.org. Re: [Audyssey] got into the conference
Hi Claudio, There was a Tech Talk conference last night featuring Jim Kitchen and his games. During the conference Jim showed off Monopoly, Football, Casino, and baseball. He talked about his plans for puppy 1, and how he got into accessible games. After the main part of the conference everyone drifted into how Audyssey and the magazine has grown into a community and family thanks to Jim's games. How Jim's games really were the first accessible games most of us played which is certainly true for me. He talked about how around 1989 he got an NEC with Jaws For Dos and there wasn't really any accessible games out there. So he began to write his own. In that regard he and I are a lot alike. After I lost my sight I didn't think there were any accessible games so I started programming games. When I found Audyssey I discovered there were games, but nothing like I had been playing before loosing my sight. hence the creation of USA Games. After listening I did get a greater respect for Jim just seeing how much enjoyment, help, and education his games have done for a lot of people. Many of them from an older generation who aren't interested in Tomb Raider, Jedi Knight, Resident Evil, and the kind of games us from a younger generation are after. It is easy to loose sight of that when we are looking ahead at the future rather than the history and how much we were all effected by someone like Jim and Phil who opened the door for accessible games in the first place. I kind of have to laugh, but some of PCS Games older titles like Panzers In North Africa are still on my wish list for Windows games. the game rocked and I miss having it. I remember Trek 99 and I really enjoyed that game. It was Trek 99 and Trek 2000 that influenced STFC. Claudio Zeni wrote: Hello Josh! About what conference do you talk please? [Audyssey] Got my domain info fixed!
Hello list, I have just stumbled across a myrical of myricals. While talking on the phone to a dear friend of mine she mentioned it was too bad I never backed up my info somewhere. Even if I saved it on a floppy or something. Then, I tried to remember if I had done any major backups before the old desktop died. As it happens in early March 2007 before installing Vista on that system I did a full system backup to dvd to insure nothing got lost in case I crashed and burned the install. Duh! Well, I remember I should have such a dvd in my disks I never unpacked from the move. Dug around, found it, restored my Thunderbird mail folders, and there in my old email inbox was a email stating my user name and password for my domain as well as all other data. All is good now. I can finally begin the move today, and usagames.us should be back online monday or Tuesday. Re: [Audyssey] Got my domain info fixed!
yeah I have done that before, its anoying. Although most of the info and disks are coman for all systems here there are a few that are only for the server and these are away way way away somewhere. Now when they are needed like when there is an actual need it means hunting round in cupboards. one of the things is the 128mb usb ledtech drive for the win98 remote non network unit I use for some linux and loan out to family that require systems. it gets lost a load. Now though the stuff is on my external drive. At 09:41 a.m. 13/01/2008, you wrote: Hello list, I have just stumbled across a myrical of myricals. Re: [Audyssey] Got my domain info fixed!
Hi, Yeah, allot of it came down to simply jogging my memory. It is one of those cases where I made the backup just in case, put it away, and since the Vista install went smoothly I forgot about the data on that disk. I also had invested in a portible drive at that time so I assumed all the data I needed was on the portible drive. When I couldn't find my domain registration information on that drive I had assumed it was lost. My friends comment made me think about if I had any other backups which might include that data. Bingo I remembered the dvd I had made and on a last ditch effort decided to find it, import all my settings, and look for any records I might have. I located what I needed, and it all came from a simple comment. --- Gamers mailing list __ Gamers@audyssey.org If you want to leave the list, send E-mail to [EMAIL PROTECTED] You can make changes or update your subscription via the web, at http://audyssey.org/mailman/listinfo/gamers_audyssey.org.
