[Audyssey] miriani

2007-04-30 Thread Liam Erven
I think a bunch of you guys on the list play it already, but we play a game
called miriani. It's a space type mud thing. It's really hard to describe.
You can find ou tinfo about it at toastsoft.net. For a while we've been
playing with a client called monkeyterm which works pretty well. One of the
major pitfalls we had was that people in order to play had to register dll
files which was a serious pain. I finally sat down and compiled our sounds and
scripts in to an executable that people can install and be done with. If you'd
like to check out the game, feel free to head on over to
www.liamerven.com/miriani and pick up the client and the sound pack. If you're
using jaws, make sure to grab the jaws files on the page. it reclasses the
display, and makes it readable.
and I didn't leave the window eyes people out either. I've added window eyes
support, which is quite nice.

Hi folks

I play Miriani a lot and am on it most of the day here in the UK . I keep
reroling because my characters get involved with bad characters. I am Penny
Darlington at the moment. I can only asteroid haul, salvage in a cargo hauler
and planetary mine. I know about missions but don't want to be asking for them
constantly over general. I am getting bored with the activities I can do. I
want to stay on Miriani all day as before. Any ideas how I might structure my
day on Miriani to prevent this boredom?

Maybe the original hosts got pissed that it was up in the first

who was running that game in its latest incarnation) had said
something to the effect of he didn't plan to start it up in the near

Hi,
It's true that you might have to cross over eight to ten sectors before you
find a roid, but otherwise I don't see a problem in finding them. I'd advice
you to travel up or down, because that's the fastest way to move from sector

See my post I posted under another thread. No offence, but it's this reason
that they do it. Because they want to see the weaker players leave.

See my post I posted under another thread. No offence, but it's this reason
that they do it. Because they want to see the weaker players leave.

WHile I'm really not trying to offend you personally, however, I think that
if you leave, you'll only make him happy. If you want to leave, we'll be
sad to see you go, however, people, don't take it from him, and you'll gain

[Audyssey] Miriani soundpack

2012-06-24 Thread Kevin Andrews

Hi all,

I have a friend who has been trying to get the Miriani soundpack for the
VIP MUD client. I used to have it, but it was on another machine I had
that has since been formatted, etc. Anyway, could someone point me to a
URL with a good soundpack for the client? I've already done some
hunting, and most of them suggest going to the Miriani boards online or
in game, and I think my account has since been purged because I can't
log in via the web. Anyway, any help is appreciated.

Thanks.

Hello all,
Althoguh I don't play miriani anymore, I periodicly look at their
website, just to stay in touch with what's happening
ingame(announcements, ingame news, etc). More recently, I've
discovered that the number of players connected at any given time has
dropped from the mid 50s to usualy somewhere in the mid-30s and
sometimes even lower. I'm curious to know if there are any outstanding
reasons for this decline?

Hi,
I am a new player to miriani, and I wanted to try combat. I am trying

the time I've registered that they've moved away, they are able to hit

focus and scan commands, but if any other players have tips, that
would beawesome. Unfortutately, I don't have a computer to play it so
helpful sounds are out. I am playing using mudrammer on my phone.

Re: [Audyssey] miriani podcast

2008-06-02 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi Tyler,
First, I'd like to say that the recording quality was ok. there is
nothing wrong with the recording quality. Saving as 128 KBPS mp3 format
is quite common for podcasts, and is cd quality audio. So no need to
worry about recording quality.
Second, I have a few suggestions or ways you can improve your podcasts
based on some experience with public speaking. While in college I had to
take some courses on communications, and there are actually a few things
you can do to better structure your thoughts, show off a game, and get
your points across clearer.
The first thing you can do is write up a text/braille outline of the
topics you want to cover in your podcast. This will help you layout your
show, remind you of what order each topic will be discussed, and include
reminders of key points. Most people who do public speaking use a
written outline for easy reference during their program.
For example, in your podcast I've often noticed you would start into a
subject, go um wait, start something else, come back to the earlier
subject, and then go I forgot to mention this, etc. If you had an
outline of your program brailled up and sitting on your desk in front of
you all you would need to do is look up your show notes and remember
what it is you wanted to talk about.
Second, you might want to remember to stay a foot or so away from your
microphone. A lot of newby podcasters make the mistake of getting right
up on their microphone, talk into it, and get a really distorted section
of the cast. The rule of thumb is to be at least 12 inches away from the
microphone in order to get a clean recording. it also will give your
podcast a level recording volume.
Third, if you are going to demonstrate something that you can't explain
while you re playing it would be a good idea to cover it to some degree
before actually letting the player hear it being played out. An example
of this is the combat portion of your podcast. You didn't really explain
the combat very well, and while I could hear you fighting the enemy
ships I simply had no idea how you were doing it. You may have avoided
some confusion by spending a minute or two before hand explaining step
by step how to combat enemies in the game.
Last, you might want to spend a minute or so before your podcast just
doing some basic setup for your show. An example is I noticed part way
into your show you launched the game, and then spent 30 seconds or so
fiddling around with the jaws speech rate, logging into the game, and so
on. You might want to set that up to start with, or pause the recording
while you fiddle around with this or that. If you do so your podcast
will come off a little more professionally done, and save on file size
as well.
Hth.

Re: [Audyssey] miriani podcast

2008-06-03 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi Shaun,
I agree. Tyler did have the Jaws voice rate up way too fast for a
demonstration. When working I also have my speech rate up equally as
fast, but for a demonstration on something I am unfamiliar with I would
have prefered the speech rate be a little slower so I can be certain to
hear everything clearly.
Other than that the fact Tyler didn't use a written outline of some kind
are my only two major complaints with the podcast. I really think if we
are going to broadcast and demonstrate programs and services to the
blind community at large we should aim for a cemmi-professional podcast
format/quality. Most of us aren't probably good public speakers, I
realize that, but there are ways to improve our public speaking skills.
The best way to improve our public speaking skills i by using notes,
outlines, and some kind of reference to have on hand as we are doing our
podcast. It helps organize your thoughts, sets a defined format for your
podcast, and there is no guessing what to say next as it all is really
right there on your braille notes.
For those in college or thinking of attending college taking some
communication classes would really help as well. In communications
classes they will teach you how to prepare speaches, state all points as
quickly and clearly as possible, and what should and should not be said
in your public program. Most people have a tendancy to get board
quickly so your speach or podcast needs to be informative and
interesting enough to hold your end users attention for at least 30
minutes. The last thing we want to do when podcasting is stop and start
in the middle of a thought, spend too much time fiddling with this or
that in the background, and so on. those sorts of disruptions to the
podcast have a way of getting your listener disinterested in your program.

Well I don't have speech fast at all.
Its to hard to understand, I usually use 120wpm or what ever is the slowest
without being to slow so speech goes bad, I really don't go fast.

Re: [Audyssey] miriani podcast

2008-06-03 Thread constantine (on laptop)
Hi

I really appreciate that feedback. I was a foot away from that microphone,
was using the victor stream to record. Its a very sensitive microphone, and
I like using it. And, yeah, I forgot to pause the recording. I forget
exactly what happened there. I'll keep that combat issue in mind. Hopefully
when I can do version 2, I might cover artifacting (what I'm going to do
when this occurs, etc). I'm not great at combat in the game, so maybe
someone else could help me there.

That using braille notes sounds great too- thanks.

2008-06-04 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi Tyler,
Yeah, I thought you were using a pretty sensitive microphone. Most of
the podcast was clear, but once in the show it got really distorted like
maybe you got in too close to the microphone and it got distorted. That
was mainly why I tossed in that tip.

Ask for help on the chatter channel, or you can actually take out a 10
million credit lone. That'll be enough to get you a cargo hauler, a space
suit, and other supplies as well, while not putting you far at all in debt.
Need any help? Don't hesitate to ask.

Trading is, to be honest, lamely coded. I say this because you've gotta
note what sells where, and once you find what you wanna sell, you've gotta
do a lot of searching for it. Can be good, but...allas, not.

Hi,

I'm a little confused at what your trying to get at.

Are you asking if you modify the soundpack in some way, will the previous
one be deleted? If you use win rar, that should be the case- win rar has a
nifty little extraction function, and if you make an sfx archive you'll be
good. It puts the miriani6 folder in a .exe file, and extracts it to monkey
term, or wherever you want it to go. Quite neat.

Re: [Audyssey] miriani question

2008-10-29 Thread Matheus
hi shaun!
it's awreade finished, i'm just including some new weapons and other
things. but the bad thing is: it's not in english, i thinked in
translating it, but the program that i'm using right now is created here
and i can't will translate it deffinately, same if i want.
sad, bekause the game i think that it's cool, i made it in the style of
"counter strike", but only in text, and change some factors, like: the
rooms that you are, go from 1,1 coordinates to 10,10. it's a combat
arena, like hmm, think in a table of chess, each cell is a room, and you
go moving in the rooms until find the enemy, then kill. and wen you kill
someone, you receive money to buy new weapons, and wen you die, you lost
all, and start with the initial money, so it's balanced, don't will have strong
players always.
realy sad. if the peoples here like the idea, i realy will try to
translate it.

2008-10-29 Thread Valiant8086

Hi.
jfwapi.dll. You can generally find one of these in c:\windows\system32
this makes jaws talk, you also need comaudio.dll, also found there
generally. comaudio is used in miriani6 to play the sounds. If you want to
support window-eyes you need gwspeaks.dll, found on the gwmicro site.
http://gwmicro.com under the support section.

hmm it's okay but.
in the miriani 6 there are a file, i think, that it's used to jaws
speak, i think that it's a dll, i don't know the name. jfw up.dll maybe
is the name, i need this file to put in the new soundpack that i'll
make.

Quite neat.

Hi.
jfwapi.dll. You can generally find one of these in c:\windows\system32
this makes jaws talk, you also need comaudio.dll, also found there
generally. comaudio is used in miriani6 to play the sounds. If you want to
support window-eyes you need gwspeaks.dll, found on the gwmicro site.

Quite neat.

Hi Nick.

I know myself that even though there is a lot I'd like to try in miriani,
ship to ship combat, fighting the aliens etc, the constant unregulated pvp
where anyone can blow you up at any time puts me off entirely, sinse I just
am not interested in a game like that, and I don't want to risk all my
progress and equip ment being destroyed by some high level player who was
having a bad day.

I have met several miriani players who made progress in the game, but left
because they got sick of this aspect of things, indeed to my mind nothing is
more! liekly to put new players off than being killed by anyone of a higher
level.

so, while I'm not sure if this is a reason for the decline, if miriani
changed their policy and made player killing an opt in system the way it is
on alteraeon, methinks they would get a lot more interest, starting
with myself.

[Audyssey] Miriani player base

2012-09-14 Thread Meka White, LMP
An older email asked why Miriani's player base has gone down. I cannot speak
for others, but as a former Miriani player, I can tell you why I no longer
play.

The game says that it is rp-enforced, and for a long time, the staff
enforced it wonderfully. These days, anything goes and if your ship happens
to get blown up, or someone stuns you on a ship for hours because they are
just having a bad day in real life, then there is nothing that you as a
player can do about it. You're told to suck it up. 'It's the way I play my
character! Don't judge me! It's how a pirate acts!' Without going in to
detail about just how much bull that is, I will simply state that it is
annoying. It isn't just that something in game has happened, but it's
preventing you from continuing to play. There is nothing that you can do
when a team of griefers-and that is exactly what these problem players
are-decide that it is their duty to pull their apparent rank and become
excessive about what they do.

It is difficult to deduce what is or is not appropriate role-play on Miriani
because rules are not in place to form some kind of standard and anything
goes. Insults are freely given over the chatter channel that some will be
quick to chime in 'but that's how I rp!'. Except that it's worse than what
you find on Internet forums and makes absolutely no sense whatsoever.

I am a huge fan of role-play. I have done collaborative story writing for
years via email, forums, mushes, and instant messengers. I am all about
good characterization, fun plots, and building up a conflict. Conflicts can
be fun, and if done well, even if you come out on the losing end, you can
still feel good about your performance in the play. Unfortunately, Miriani
has become a pool where griefers freely swim and the life guards do
absolutely nothing. I blame the staff more than anything. People will
generally play within the parameters that you set for them. If they don't,
and continue to be a nuisance, then staff should bring action down. How are
players supposed to know what they should be doing if staff don't step in?
Of course, I suppose I assume that the average person isn't going to go out
of their way to be a complete jackwagon and would try to be decent, but what
do I know?

There are so many features of the game that I truly enjoy. But the griefers
and the staff's complacency in dealing with them is why I do not play there
any longer and have found something else.

Warmly,
Meka

Re: [Audyssey] miriani playerbase

2012-09-28 Thread Pitermach

Oh yeah, I remember working on that soundpack with you. Good times.
Anyway, they got a lot of stuff going for it. A nice codebase, a pretty
huge world, and at one point there were some really cool events which
developed the story (the wormhole aliens anyone?). The problem is
they're not running it very well. For those who haven't played miriani
but tried Alter aeon, imagine getting to a high level, learning a lot of
spells, and then someone would come along, ruin your day and you'd
literally have to start from square 1, which if you didn't have money
wouldn't even be possible.

Subject: [Audyssey] miriani playerbase

Hello all,
Althoguh I don't play miriani anymore, I periodicly look at their
website, just to stay in touch with what's happening
ingame(announcements, ingame news, etc). More recently, I've
discovered that the number of players connected at any given time has
dropped from the mid 50s to usualy somewhere in the mid-30s and
sometimes even lower. I'm curious to know if there are any outstanding
reasons for this decline?

I actually wonder given how many people I've heard leave the game, or like
me don't want to play the game because of this ridiculous enforced pk if
some sort of effort to contact the developers would be a good idea, sinse
I'd love to try miriani as fighting the prailer, surveying and exploring

I don't actually think the devs on that mud care either way. That's the
impression I got before I left the game. Well I half left half got barred
because I expressed real displeasure at having my assets stolen so early on
in the game by some little upstart who new I didn't have the ability to
fight back. Rather pointless really. So like I say I doubt very much that
the devs will care 1 way or other.

I have heard as much, still if their player base is indeed dropping maybe
they would considder changing their minds. I'd certainly love to try miriani
myself, but not if I can have everything I work for utterly destroyed at a

If I don't want to fight other people, why should I have the inconvenience

there were! rules, even unspoken ones. Also considder that a game is meant

Ok, I'm going to play devil's advocate here.
while at the same time, I agree, there should be limits, I also think
the hosts, want a high realism effect.
when you consider real life, you don't get alot of times to choose if
you want to be attacked and things stolen from you, this is the
similar effect they're trying to put in game.
While I agree they do need to make changes, they're not, because they
don't care to, and the majoiry of the older players there, have enough
influence to keep it the way it is, even if they did want to change
it.
and to be perfectly honest, miriani does still have a good peek
playerbase, I see over 60 to 70 people alot during the day, and
truthfully, that number doesn'ts eem like its going to drop anytime
soon.
so also, sense they look at that, and see hey, we have a goo player
number, there's no need to change these small things like this, its a
case of teh majority verses the few.
so until something drastic actually happens, don't expect it to change.

Re: [Audyssey] miriani playerbase

2012-09-28 Thread James Howard
that may have been, but as you look in the change of hosts, and
changes in policies as well, they're willing to make small ones here
and there, they're not going to out right say ok you won't be attacked
if you don't want to, because its not conducive to the game's feel.
all who play, also have to remember this, once that n tag is gone,
you're not a newbie anymore. there are specifically thigns in place
for those who have the n tag, so when you're refering to newbies, yes,
there are thigns in place that protects them, but, once that n tag
drops, which it does automatically after a long amount of time, its
assumed, you've learned how to take care of yourself, and defend
yourself. Miriani is for most designed with a roleplay environment in
mind, you have to good side, and teh bad side, and the bad side
doesn't have to just be "aliens" it can be people from your or the
other alliences as well, and if you start restricting things like that
in a roleplay environment, you take away from it, so you can say they
need to do this, as much as you won't, but if its going to take away
from the feel, from teh roleplay, the good verses bad element, they
won't do it, its just that simple.

Well James, call it roleplay or whatever you want, --- -though to me
roleplay doesn't mean beating the snot out of whoever you wish without fear
or favor, which is rpetty much what happens on miriani by all accounts.

All i can say is I'm dam sorry such a great sounding game is so badly
spoilt, and obviously I'm not the only person that thinks this.

That's exactly why i suggest opt in instead, so that those who wish
pvp, or roleplay if you prefer can do that, and those who do not
cannot, it's about choice, which obviously the miriani admins don't care
about in this matter.

it's just a shame though, sinse nearly every space game takes this line,
which is exactly why core exiles is so unique.

Re: [Audyssey] miriani playerbase

2012-09-28 Thread Meka White, LMP
The challenge withopt-in PVP on a role-play enforced game is that
inevitably you will have people who say whatever they want and antagonize
the pvp players, with the idea that nothing can be done to retalliate
against them.

Of course Ihave seen other rp-enforced games who manage opt-in PVP in such a
way, and those who antagonize will quickly find themselves set to PVP. Of
course, this actually requires some work to keep the game atmosphere going
well, and I just never got the impression that those with the ability to
create change gave a crap about it.

Re: [Audyssey] miriani playerbase

2012-09-28 Thread Meka White, LMP
There is a difference between realism and griefing. While there are pirates
in space-themed novels who steal, loot, and plunder repeatedly, it doesn't
mean that you should continue to do it once someone is up and knock them
down again. If I want that kind of realism, I'll go live real life.

There's realism for the sake of game balance, and then there is realism that
can stifle. It cracks me up when fantasy themed games try to go too far to
make things realistic and go so overboard. Casting magic missile in the
darkness isn't necessary a point to realism either, and yet it's featured in
most of those types of games. When it's stifling and it's far more work,
then it becomes far less fun for me.

I'd be fine with space pirates if people actually roleplayed consistently
and it was more than just blowing up ships just because they don't like
something you said on chatter, or they are OOCly having a bad day. Pirates
could commandeer ships, screw around with trade prices and values, have
effects on planets. All of these things are things that could be roleplayed
and with a little host help, could come off quite well. There could be an
opportunity to form a resistance group, to react to what the pirates are
doing. This is cause and effect. This is build-up. This is role play.

There are some games where notorious villains stop and help out newbies in
their own way. Why? Because they understood that other players were the
lifeblood of a mud. They could have cut them down, been mean and hateful,
but they chose not to and instead chose to lend a hand. Then later, they
chose to do some awesome roleplay with that player once they'd gotten
established and start conflict.

Blowing up ships, consistently griefing, and holding someone for hours to
stun and strand them takes no imagination. There is no build-up, no
conflict, it's just someone waving their e-genitals around and proclaiming
that theirs is bigger while hiding behind the 'but it's my character and
that's how I roleplay!' facade.

But since nothing has been done about it and it won't likely change, it's
just more fuel to feed the beast.

Warmly,
Meka, who apparently has a very strong opinion on this issue.

I agree Dark, I'm a peaceful person normally, but it's taking advantage to
snag a person if they are afk or such, in my case I've taken unwell and
haven't been able to shut down the game or get somewhere safe, therebye
earning myself a nice stay in a bc for a while. The decor was terrible, but
the company was far far worse, thank god for the log out button. :)

Well James, call it roleplay or whatever you want, --- -though to me
roleplay doesn't mean beating the snot out of whoever you wish without
fear or favor, which is rpetty much what happens on miriani by all
accounts.

2012-09-29 Thread Darren Harris
You can rp with core exiles too if you wanted too. this is the thing, you
don't need the pvp crap like that in order to have a good rp environment.
The point is that the option for rp is there if you wana go down that road.
Some people do which is ok.

Does anyone know of a sound pack for Miriani? I'd love to crank up my VIP term

Re: [Audyssey] miriani combat

2015-11-18 Thread Willem Venter
Hi David.
It's been a while since I played Miriani, but here is what I remember.
Ship combat is one of the more enjoyable things in Miriani. When you
are practicing alone though you have to pilot and shoot, which makes
it more tricky.

Before you add drones, practice manual navigation. It is easier to do
combat that way.
After you moved check if where you thought you would end up is
actually where you ended up.

After you mastered that, practice locking onto coords and shooting at
them. You could add another stationary ship as a target.

For combat, go to 3,3,3 and let the drones come to you. any coord
around 3,3,3 is easier to type. Remember that the general weapons have
a range of only 1 coord.
Always keep moving and stay in the area of 3,3,3, but don't be too
predictable in your movement.

Re: [Audyssey] Miriani player base

2012-09-15 Thread Lori Duncan

Hello Meka and others, I still play Miriani, but to be totally honestI am
sickto death of certain characters, namely pirates, who think they know it
alland have feable excusesfor doing what they do, like stunning, stranding
and stealing droids. I agree totally that the staff should do more to stop
these trouble makers, how are you supposed to play a game if you're stunned
for up to 12 hours, it's all very wellfor them to say go play something
else, but that sort of lazy attitude is driving players away. I too play
sc, but am finding the change from Miriani harder, ie when I salvage,
there's more to it, and I don't have a good head for numbers. The only good
thing about Miriani now is that I have made some really great friends, and
we still keep in contact either on one mud or another, or through skype. I
hope though a member of Miriani staff sees this email, maybe if enough of us
club together we can make them sit up and take notice. I had my droid
stolen last night, am still mad about it as I'd done nothing to deserve
being attacked and stunned.

I too love rp and creative writing Meka, if you want to have a chat about
it, feel free to write me off list lori_dunca...@hotmail.com

I play star conquest, although I would like a more medieval fantasy mud.

Also, I can hack and slash with the best of them.

Miriani
has become a pool where griefers freely swim and the life guards do
absolutely nothing. I blame the staff more than anything. People will
generally play within the parameters that you set for them. If they
don't,

are
players supposed to know what they should be doing if staff don't step
in?

Of course, I suppose I assume that the average person isn't going to go
out
of their way to be a complete jackwagon and would try to be decent, but
what
do I know?

There are so many features of the game that I truly enjoy. But the
griefers

there
any longer and have found something else.

Does anyone know of a sound pack for Miriani? I'd love to crank up my VIP
term and hear warp drives engage when I hit a jump gate.

would be interested to have a go again if the soundpack is based on
