Hi. It's located in c:\users\your name etc. You can also reach it by going to the run dialogue (windows key+r) and typing %appdata% and pressing enter. - Original Message - From: Bryan Peterson To: Gamers Discussion list Sent: Thursday, January 07, 2010 5:34 PM Subject: [Audyssey] Windows Vista question. Hi all, First of all this isn't going to be an off topic post. I recently heard that people have been able to correct the bug in the latest version of Monkey Business that prevented you from playing the Wild West level. The bug seems to be caused by the level's map file being misplaced during the installation process. Instead of going to the Program Files\Monkey Business directory and the appropriate encripted map file, the file seems to end up in the Application Data folder. The question I have is where can this folder or its nearest equivalent be found in Vista? I know in XP it's c:\documents and settings\user name, but there doesn't seem to be a similar folder in Vista unless I'm looking in the wrong place. Several people, quite a few on audiogames.net actually, have said that by removing the map file from the Application Data folder and pasting it just into c:\program files\Draconis Entertainment\Monkey Business, they've been able to fix the issue. If possible I'd like to try this for myself but I don't know where the Application Data folder is in Vista. Homer: Hey, uh, could you go across the street and get me a slice of pizza? Re: [Audyssey] Windows Vista question.
Hi Bryan, First, thing you need to do is go to tools and options, and set show all hidden files and folders to on. Then go to c:\users\user name\application data and here is where it gets tricky. The Vissta application data folder is broken down in to local and roming subdirectories. I'd try the roming branch first and begin hunting for the misplaced file. So what happens isI reply to the messsages with in a couple of days at time. So to prevent this problem I will try to make an effert to check my email everyday so messages don't back log in the computer. your friend, Jason known as Blind Fury - Original Message - From: "Che" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: "Gamers Discussion list" Sent: Saturday, March 03, 2007 11:19 PM Subject: Re: [Audyssey] Windows Vista In Review > Hi Jason, > I am writing this so Thomas doesn't have to be the bad cop all the time. > As moderator, Thomas has asked that this topic be closed, and I think as > members we should respect that. My apologies regarding the previous post, Thomas had not mentioned this topic being closed, I got mixed up with a previous topic regarding hardware purchases, although frankly this topic has gotten fairly astray from gaming as well, IMHO. Hi Jason, I am writing this so Thomas doesn't have to be the bad cop all the time. As moderator, Thomas has asked that this topic be closed, and I think as members we should respect that. I for one give the messages Thomas and Raul send special priority and make sure I read them since they are the moderators of the list and I want to respect their wishes regarding the list. Secondly, I'm not sure why you don't use periods to seperate your sentences when you post, but it makes it very hard to understand what you are talking about and is frankly a bit inconsiderate of the rest of us that read your messages. No major big deal, but I thought you might want to consider using some punctuation so your messages get red instead of going straight into peoples delete box. On the other hand, you get a big smiley sticker for spelling, grin. Re: [Audyssey] Windows Vista In Review
Hi Jason, Agreed. We shouldn't jump to absolute conclusion about Vista just yet. Things could change in a later service pack or Windows update. We are talking about an os barely a month old, and things are bound to come up which needs smoothing out that could t take a few months to work out. When XP came out it was very buggy, had issues, but six years later it is the most stable and advanced operating system MS has ever come out with. A couple years from now Vista could potentially pass XP up as the better operating system. jason wrote: > Helllo Everybody why don't we just wait instead of jumping to conclusions > that these features for your mixers won't work for Vista maybe we need to > give the companies more time and then there will be probably a revised > program for vista remember this is what happened with xp when it first came > out it had bugs and features were taken out and if we tell microsoft about > the bugs in the programs or what we want added to the program it will > possibly work. > your friend, > Bind Fury > ___ Gamers mailing list .. Hello again it's Blind Fury I heard that we can use xp for another year. Helllo Everybody why don't we just wait instead of jumping to conclusions that these features for your mixers won't work for Vista maybe we need to give the companies more time and then there will be probably a revised program for vista remember this is what happened with xp when it first came out it had bugs and features were taken out and if we tell microsoft about the bugs in the programs or what we want added to the program it will possibly work. your friend, Bind Fury - Original Message - From: "shaun everiss" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: "Gamers Discussion list" Sent: Wednesday, February 28, 2007 1:52 AM Subject: Re: [Audyssey] Windows Vista In Review > thats one thing I don't want. > I doubt I will upgrade. > Saying that the windows midi synth is just a half cock roland synth, I > have a yamaha xg old synth and a old vsc roland synth. > So maybe that part will not be so bad. > At 07:05 p.m. 28/02/2007, you wrote: >>Hi Damien, >>On the system I installed Vista to there is no way to record from the >>wave out mix as before. Hi Shaun, As long as XP remains in the tech support cycle at Microsoft most hardware vender's will offer compatible driver cds either with the product or for download from the support sites. I can certainly understand your reservations about Vista, but my experience has been more appositive than negative. Re: [Audyssey] Windows Vista In Review
Hi Josh, Yeah, if you want XP you'll have to do that, but keep in mind you will have to locate drivers for the new hardware for XP which could be an issue if the hardware was designed primarily for Vista and beyond. Not saying that will happen, but could happen. well it depends what code ms is going to release. Speaking of which they are already writing a service pack so who knows, maybe that will fix stuff. Almost on the day they released vista ms decides to do another pack for release at the end of the year. I suspect that when vista came out it was not fully finnished. Rather than having setbacks to the date ms just released the buggy vista and started a service pack. Who knows. Re: [Audyssey] Windows Vista In Review
Hi Josh, Perhaps, but with Vista's DRM, (digital rights management,) and strict control over the hardware it is probably less likely to do that. Vista is a control freque when it comes to managing it's hardware and sharing access with any unknown outside party. I use to think 2000 and XP were control ffreaks when MS introduced the hardware access layer, but the situation only has compounded and gotten more so under Vista. The point is I am not sure the Windows mixer is likely to relinquish it's control over your sound card for a third-party solution to handle that. Re: [Audyssey] Windows Vista In Review
Hi Che, Yeah, the VIP Conduit and other blind programs would be nice. I think Vista has changed allot and blind users should get a look at it before deciding to upgrade. This isn't something you just jump on without knowing a little about it. I mean just getting around the new default environment is bad enough and is a bit of a shock. For example, the new default environment is pretty confusing until you get a feel for it, and even though you can go back to classic it's best to learn the new environment. Reason is if you are doing tech support, or even want to talk about Vista with a sighted person you will need to understand a bit of how Vista is laid out with the multipained views. many of the issues have work arounds. For example, even though run is not in start where it should Windows+r still takes you there which is quicker to get there anyway. ___ Gamers mailing list .. If you would be interested in hosting a presentation about Vista on VIP Conduit, write me off list, as I am sure they would love for you to do one. As for me, I will be waiting until I buy my next computer to upgrade to Vista, as I really don't see much of an advantage at this point to upgrading. Thanks again, Che ___ Gamers mailing list .. [Audyssey] Windows Vista In Review
Windows Vista In Review by Thomas Ward Hello gamers, friends, and fellow developers, As many of you are no doubt aware over the weekend I took my desktop PC apart, did some hardware upgrades, and ended the weekend with a from scratch install of Windows Vista Home Premium. In this email article I have decided to take a very independent review of the operating system neither condemning or praising Vista, and let the facts I present speak for themselves. All of us have no doubt already heard absolute horror stories about Vista. Same is true there are some articles out there stating Vista is the greatest os since sliced bread. I think both views are biased, and are not looking at both angles of this issue. Therefore, I am going to attempt to take a neutral roll here, and just state what I both liked and disliked about my Vista experience so far. Installation I've been installing operating systems alone or aided by a sighted reader for on 15 years, and the Vista Home Premium install was extremely simple and strait forward compared to earlier installations of Windows. In this regard I found Vista's installation scored high points with me as far as ease of installation for a new user. Basically, I began my install by placing the Vista dvd in my dvd drive, and rebooted the system which landed me in the Vista setup wizard. The first screen had several options such as keyboard type, language for the install, and other general stuff which for me was fine since it was all ready setup for a standard American PC user. One other button available here was a utility that would scan your system for Vista compatibility. I find this nice as it will trouble shoot hardware and software issues you may have if you proceed with the install. As I had already tested this with Microsoft's Vista Adviser tool earlier I knew I would pass this check, and skipped it. However, as a technical adviser for many home users I like knowing Vista has the ability to check this stuff out before totally blowing an install not aware of what to expect. On the next major screen I was prompted for my registration name and my company. Again a no brainer here. On the following screen I was prompted for the installation product key which my wife read to me off the back of the product case. Once entered it was time to move on. As I recall the following screen asked me how I would like to do on line product activation. I checked run automatically the first time I logged on to the Internet. No big deal here. Following that screen we get an option to select our installation type. My version gave two options upgrade or custom. Upgrade will update your Windows 2000 or XP system to Vista not overwriting your data, settings, etc like a usual upgrade would do. Custom allows the power user to clean the hard drive all operating system files, data, etc and do a from scratch install. I chose the custom advanced installation since I am just that kind of guy. For those running an upgrade the custom screens I will see next don't apply. In short they involved selecting a drive partition, adding and deleting partitions, formatting and allocating space, etc... Once I finished with the custom screens the Vista install began extracting the operating system to the cleared hard drive. This took around 45 minutes give or take a few. Following the copy Portion of the install Vista configured my hardware, did a bunch of internal setups, and took us to the post install faze. After everything is configured the post installation faze had three or four screens that are very easy to answer. Basically, Vista asked for my primary user name, password, colors, background, and end user preferences. After I supplied all that Vista restarted one more time and install was complete. It came up with the new Vista desktop theme, and the new welcome center. Vista Accessibility Many of us have no doubt have heard about Vista's new graphical environment. Yes, that is true Vista's user interface has completely changed, and visually is totally a different experience for us. However, it was not he accessibility nightmare I thought it was going to be upon starting this upgrade/install. Before installing Vista I downloaded the new Window Eyes 6.1 beta for Vista at http://www.gwmicro.com/beta and burned it to a cd for handy installation. Since the Window Eyes beta was lacking a self-voicing install for some reason I had my wife read me the install screens, and then I rebooted Vista. Since I am already a pretty big fan of Window Eyes anyway I had no issues here jumping in and exploring the new Vista environment. I would classify the default graphical user environment more confusing than inaccessible. It was very accessible just confusing. One of the first areas I'd like to explore is the totally new start menu under Vista. This is one area that has been under going changes the past two versions of Windows and has really changed under Vista. Whe

Well if one is determained enough they will get in. As I have said on my various postings on the net all thats going to happen is that those that pirate will be the consumers rather than others. The people that should be prosicuted are those in china that sell coppied stuff for almost nothing, but not the comon consumer. Its just not fair. Sure if I buy vista eventuall maybe I'll have something to do with it but who knows. The thing is that ms is getting pushed around by the music industry. Lets face it all those types are business types, sure the law is clearcut but there is probably a translation issue when this crosses to computer code. What will happen is that noone will like ms vista and other things and ms will have to back down. Its funny that the music industry can push ms around I mean if ms just told them to go away they couldn't do much, I mean people have tried and faled to sue ms and well. Hi Yohandy, Think again. Someone already cracked drm a week after Vista came out, and it was highly publicised. No doubt MS is turning green, and moaning about all the work that was just flushed down the toilet by a cracker who decided drm sucked and found a way to get around it. Bottomline every programmer knows if you can secure it someone is out there who can crack it. As long as security is software based it can be subverted. Hi Damien, It is Microsoft's name for there knew ultra paranoid digital copy protection software in Win Vista. It is suppose to protect the illegal use of dvds hd dvds, and copying of them, but people have already broken it of course. Hi Josh, Actually, people have already been there and done that. A week after Vista hit shelves of your local computer and office supply store the internet lit up with all sorts of cracks for drm to play illegal copied content as well as unlock full premium content. Am I worried about drm. Not to much. People have already found ways to get around the drm stuff in some cases, and it is all there on the internet for interested parties. Re: [Audyssey] Windows Vista
Hi, Actually, the drm is supposed to restrict premium content files. A huge mistake for Microsoft I think as anything Vista thinks is premium it either refuses to play or restricts the quality. Why? I have no idea, but MS has become copyright paranoid in their old age. This is compounded that the music and movie industry is now influencing the software designs, and we are talking non-programmer types telling Microsoft how to write it's software. The drm stuff is still buggy. I have heard horror stories of musicians and home video enthusiasts being locked out of there home made content just because the drm screwed up and could not verify the legality of the content. I imagine MS got some not so suddle complaint's about that one, but after reinstalling Vista the content in some cases then worked as the drm finally let it pass. It is stuff like this is the reason Vista is only going on one of my systems until I can fully test all of the new drm stuff and see the reality of how much it effects the every days users life. I've heard everything Vista is really awesome to it out right sucks and everything in between. The only way to know is by testing it yourself and drawing your own conclusions. ___ Gamers mailing list .. Re: [Audyssey] Windows Vista
Hi Dark, Monty and Raceway certainly won't be the last projects you will see from me. I'll still be working on games, but perhaps not as rapidly as I normally would put them out. However, I do think low cost access solutions for 2000, XP, and Vista is something that is needed in our comunity. As for hal's pricing it hasn't been too bad. The only thing it is Dolphin takes too long for upgrades to new operating systems etc, and I've seen some applications I use it doesn't work well with. ___ Gamers mailing list .. Re: [Audyssey] Windows Vista
Well if you can put one together why not? it might be an interesting project in it's own right, though I hope once Monti and Raceway are done, you'll also devote some developement time to the Usa game engine and the asteroids game, I'm interested in both. One thing I've always liked about dolphin, is their rather flexible deffinition of "upgrade" Sinse I have a license with them, when my old laptop gave up the ghost, they gave me a complete copy of Hal v6 at the price of an upgrade to install into my desktop. Ditto with the new work Laptop I've just acquired. sinse new version upgrades are only about£100 (about Sixty or seventy dollars I think), where as initially bying Hal would cost six or seven times that much, it's certainly helpful for keeping my screen reader up to date. Re: [Audyssey] Windows Vista
Hi Dark, A while back I began working on a Windows based screen reader core mainly for myself. I am tired of paying the big bucks for Jaws or Window eyes, Hal, etc when I could probably make something myself that would be both functional, low cost, and have the features I want. I honestly haven't gotten very far yet as I have been far too busy with everything else that has been going on around here. Although, after I finish with Monty and Raceway I plan to take to that project with a vengence if I can. I hope Window Eyes 6.1 will be the last version of a commercial screen reader I'll have to upgrade to and with in a year or two I will have something almost equal to it as far as getting the job done. I'll likely start by supporting applications I use daily Firefox, Internet Explorer, Outlook, Thunderbird, Word, Notepad, you name it. After that assuming it is stable enough for others to get involved with I may expand the screen reader to support other third party software based on recommendations from any fans that might want to use it. Anyway, that is my plan. Who knows what the future will bring, but I certainly want to take a crack at my own screen reader. ___ Gamers mailing list .. Lucky me! I'm going to order Hal v7.03, so if there was a v8 coming up... I would be out-of-date again. Well, so it goes, and as somebody who's used every version of Hal from 3.1 onwards I don't mind waiting a while especially as it's fairly unlikely I'll want to upgrade to vista all that soon. what's this screen reader project? all the best, Dark. - Original Message - From: "Thomas Ward" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: "Gamers Discussion list" Sent: Friday, February 23, 2007 2:36 AM Subject: Re: [Audyssey] Windows Vista > Hi Dark, > I'm honestly not surprised. Hi Damien, Well, if all else fails there is always Narrator. that thing sucks compared to Jaws or Window Eyes but it is garenteed to provide some basic access to Outlook Express, I.E., and other Microsoft products. So we aren't talking a total lack of access just not the quality of access we are use to. However, Win Eyes 6.1 is a high quality screen reader and it does work with Vista which I will in all likely hood be using that. damien c. sadler - head of x-sight interactive wrote: > i admire those folk who can just upgrade no problems and not be a little > apprehensive about it at first. i just couldn't do that. if i know that > something is going to depend on a whole feature that i know doesn't work > now, i'm obviously going to be a bit freaked out on upgrading. maybe i will > upgrade eventually, maybe not. i suppose it depends on whether i get a > computer of my own, or what the college decide to do, whichever comes first. > i may be getting the machine i'm using, so this'll be my own, so if the > college decide to upgrade to vista before i leave then i suppose i'm stuck > with vista. > ___ Gamers mailing list .. Hi Dark, I'm honestly not surprised. Dolphin's Hal screen reader is usually behind Jaws and Window eyes when it comes to supporting new operating systems and upgrades in general. Although it's access is pretty fair when it finally comes. i admire those folk who can just upgrade no problems and not be a little apprehensive about it at first. i just couldn't do that. if i know that something is going to depend on a whole feature that i know doesn't work now, i'm obviously going to be a bit freaked out on upgrading. maybe i will upgrade eventually, maybe not. i suppose it depends on whether i get a computer of my own, or what the college decide to do, whichever comes first. i may be getting the machine i'm using, so this'll be my own, so if the college decide to upgrade to vista before i leave then i suppose i'm stuck with vista. regards, damien - Original Message - From: "Dark" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: "Gamers Discussion list" Sent: Thursday, February 22, 2007 8:56 PM Subject: Re: [Audyssey] Windows Vista > to any Hal users, in a recent chat with Dolphin, i'm informed that Hal > V8.0 > wil be compatable with Vista, but it won't be released for a while > (Earliest > September 207). > Stil, even though I do rather fancy the blue ray support and internal > burning features (that expression has always bothered me), I'm not really > in > too much of a hurry to upgrade, not until stuf I want to do becomes > impossible on Xp, or my Pc explodes and I need a new one. > Beware the Grue! > Dark. > - Original Message - > From: "Thomas Ward" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> > To: "Gamers Discussion list" > Sent: Thursday, February 22, 2007 4:39 PM > Subject: [Audyssey] Windows Vista > > >> Hi Kim and all, >> I am approving this topic as I am certain many gamers are going to be >> asking the same kinds of questions. >> Overview >> >> Windows Vista is a totally new operating system, and is the first >> operating system to offer a fully 3D graphical operating environment >> Microsoft has named Windows Arrow. >> The new Windows Explorer can not only burn data cds and music cds it has >> been updated to burn data dvds, your home vidios and pictures to dvds, >> and with Windows media center you can play your dvds and edit media >> content. >> Windows Vista has an all new firewall which allows you to block all >> ports you are not using to prevent hackers, crackers, trogen horses, and >> other attempts to access your data and content remotely. >> Windows Vista comes with the .NET Framework 3.0, DirectX 10.0, and >> Windows Media 11, Internet Explorer 7.0, Outlook Express 7.0, Windows >> Media Center, and a bunch of other new stuff never seen before. >> In addition Windows Vista is the first and only operating system that >> supports the playing of the new blue ray high definition dvds that have >> just came out on the market in the USA. Re: [Audyssey] Windows Vista
Hi Damien, First, the answer is no. You don't have to run Vista from the dvd drive. It can be installed or extracted on to your hard drive and run just like any prier version of Windows. In fact Vista Home Basic and Premier are setup to do this by default. Second, keep in mind Microsoft has created several different versions of Windows Vista, and each is a little bit different, and comes with different applications depending on what you are buying it for. Here is a quick run down of the most common versions. Windows Vista Home Basic. This version is comparable to XP Home edition. It is a very stripped down version of Vista, and comes with just the basics. Should be good enough for the average computer user. Windows Vista Home Premiere. This version is like Home Basic above except it includes allot more multimedia applications and features. This is comparable to XP Media center. Windows Vista Business. This version comes equip with server side applications, and apps sutible for small or large business and colleges. Is comparable to Windows XP Pro. Finally, Windows Vista Ultament. This version has everything plus some extras not even available to Home or Business versions. This is comparable to Windows XP Enterprise. You should note all versions listed above come in 32 bit and 64 bit versions. They also come in retail boxed or OEM versions. If you do the math there is currently about 16 full versions of Vista, and several upgrade versions to upgrade XP to Vista. So there is lots of options to choose from if you are buying to update your system. Personally, I chose the Vista Home Premiere as it was both in my price range, and it comes with some extra bells and wistles not available on Home Basic. ___ Gamers mailing list .. to any Hal users, in a recent chat with Dolphin, i'm informed that Hal V8.0 wil be compatable with Vista, but it won't be released for a while (Earliest September 207). Stil, even though I do rather fancy the blue ray support and internal burning features (that expression has always bothered me), I'm not really in too much of a hurry to upgrade, not until stuf I want to do becomes impossible on Xp, or my Pc explodes and I need a new one. [Audyssey] Windows Vista
Hi Kim and all, I am approving this topic as I am certain many gamers are going to be asking the same kinds of questions. Overview Windows Vista is a totally new operating system, and is the first operating system to offer a fully 3D graphical operating environment Microsoft has named Windows Arrow. The new Windows Explorer can not only burn data cds and music cds it has been updated to burn data dvds, your home vidios and pictures to dvds, and with Windows media center you can play your dvds and edit media content. Windows Vista has an all new firewall which allows you to block all ports you are not using to prevent hackers, crackers, trogen horses, and other attempts to access your data and content remotely. Windows Vista comes with the .NET Framework 3.0, DirectX 10.0, and Windows Media 11, Internet Explorer 7.0, Outlook Express 7.0, Windows Media Center, and a bunch of other new stuff never seen before. In addition Windows Vista is the first and only operating system that supports the playing of the new blue ray high definition dvds that have just came out on the market in the USA. According to press releases from MS only Vista and newer operating systems will support the blue ray high def disk technology. Since .NET framework 3.0 is now a core component of the operating system rather than an add on Microsoft has bundled the managed DirectX 10 and Managed SAPI support for .NET enabled games and applications right out of the box. No extra software required. Good news for Monty and Raceway fans which are already using the .NET technologies as the core component of those games. Apparently Windows Vista has also intruduced some built in speech recognition into the operating system which allows you to voice dictate emails in Outlook Express, and other documents using notepad wordpad, etc.. I've read there is suppose to be some new features with Vista that allows you to interface with the MS XBox 360, and do some special things if you have an XBox as well. One other cool feature I read about is Windows Vista is installed from images rather than a triditional setup file so the os is litterally extracted on to your hard drive, and ran and configured from that point. Here is a general list of requirements for running Vista with Windows Arrow disabled which I think most blind users would likely wish to do. You need at least a 40 MB hard drive, 512 MB of ram, 800 MHZ processor, a dvd disk drive, and a video card that supports 3D axcelerated graphics. If you want all the really cool blue ray support and the Windows Arrow desktop experience we are talking a gig of memory and somethinglike a 1.2 GHZ processor, 3D graphics card, and so on.
