Re: [Audyssey] smugglers 4 accessibility

2010-12-25 Thread dark

the game is perfectly accessible.

I'd actually be interested to know which version of the game you got, sinse
I thought that message had been taken out. It was initially in the game when
the compatibility mode wasn't complete and stil in beta testing phase, but
doesn't apply anymore, now all screens are properly labled.

as to check boxes, just listen for the bleep sound, that will tell you when
something has been checked, even though it doesn't say so on screen. this is
because s4 has specifically designed controls not the standard ones, but it
really isn't a problem.

Btw, there actually wasn't need to buy the game, both have fairly extensive
demos.

Hi, I bought this game along with tv maneger 2 (which in the end, after
reading the manual i did not play) but smugglers seems interesting. I am
now doing the game settings before starting a game however and apparently
I cant see if a setting is checked or not, I also see when i enable the
accessibility mode that it only works for the travel screen. I wonder how
accessible this game really is.

version. I will try the setup screen again but I THINK I hear the beep sound
wether I check or uncheck a box but I will have to verify that.
Both with jaws 11 and wineyes 7.2 although most stuff is labelled the
interface still seems a bit strange and the labels are not on one line. What
I mean is if you want to fire ships guns you get fire your but then not the
word guns. I must say though that I dont use the jaws cursor but my braille
display to navigate the screen. I still have to find out how I can left
click with it though because so far I have not been able tog et the in game
help topics to work.
I wonder how you know if star systems are controlled by your faction or your
enemies (in that case they are colored red) but so far I have not been able
to get that colour registered on my braille display.

Hi.

I'll mention the lack of message to niels. Try adding the patch, maybe that
will give you the latest version without the message.

Yes, checking boxes does just give you a click, but really this doesn't
matter, the only otpions music, sfx, which are check boxes are pretty
obvious when checked or not, and others like blind compatibility mode or
hard mode give you an on screen message.

the layout thing is unfortunately just a consequence of how Jaws formats
screens when using the jaws curser. With hal, the text formatting comes out
perfectly due to Hal's ability to use virtual focus in columns.

If you can set the screen view in window eyes or jaws to display a table
format try that, though to be honest as a Hal user of 17 years I'm less sure
how those things work. i do know though that people have played the game
with Jaws and window eyes, so it is possible, though this might be through
experience with the interface.

Fair enough.

I must admit on the occasions I've tried jaws I've never personally been a
fan, but I won't start one of those arguements sinse they tend to be
circular and overheated.

stil, hal 7 or later should work without a problem provided you know what

6 might, but is likely to have some issues, but any version under 6 probably
won't be much good.

Hi.

firstly, you need to use the jaws curser to navigate the game,
including the start up screen, i'll leave it up to people who actually
use Jaws to discuss that, but just be aware standard tabbing and
arrowing in your usual reading mode wont' work.

Second, you need to go to the options menue and click on the accessibility
mode, which will make the game use more text, and be all round more
accessible, sinse by default without this mode, the game comes with
some unlabled graphics an swiftly scrolling messages.

Bare these in mind and things should work.

Have fun with the game.

Hi Gang,

I've downloaded Smugglers 4, which promises to be an excellent acccessible
game. But while the intro music is stirring enough, I have no luck in
getting Jaws to read the screens. I've tried tabbing, arrowing and the
alt key, and none of them work. Has anyone else downloaded and played
Smugglers, and if so how did you get it to work?

Re: [Audyssey] smugglers 4 demo

2008-12-22 Thread dark

Sadly, music is probably the only aspect of the game where S4 falls down.

there are a few musical clips to mark game events such as when you get
promoted, but the backghround music unfortunately doesn't change.

Most of the time, I play with it turned off.

Really though, the game is so in depth you don't really miss much of the
music.

Well, I'm off to conquer more systems for the federation! all in all
i'd say the best music is the sound of other faction ships going boom!
especially starbase defence systems.

Re: [Audyssey] smugglers 4 demo

2008-12-22 Thread dark

S4 is a very different style of game.

You do just about make your own plot through the variety of missions, the
different events that can happen, and the different outcomes of those
events.

for example, I was returning to the finis federation system after
successfully deffending new ireland to receive a mission involving an
uprising on finis prime.

getting there, i found that rebels had captured some ships, so required me
to take them out. For that service, the federation awarded me the
governorship of the planet sargoth, --- just next door to Finis prime.

then, with reports of near by aggression in the baiten system, I had to go
and try my best to blockade the baiten jump point. Traveling to this
blockade i caught up with an enemy Vip, who I subsequently attempted to
capture, and failed.

and so on. The game has so many flexible events and factors when you get to
the later portions of the game (especially with a battleship fighting in
fleet battles), that you don't need some specific gamebook style plot.

the fact that everything is also done through news reports of the war just
adds realism and atmosphere to things.

Beware the Grue!

Hi.

you don't need to actually enter a name, simply copy and paste your license
code.

I had fun registering my copy, sinse at the time I was not connected to the
net and had to ask my brother to buy it for me, then give me the setup file
and information on a memory key for my laptop.

I thought I might have to enter his name, but as it turned out simply
pasting the code was enough.

could someone please advise me how i register smugglers 4?
as when i load the game it asks for a name and a key, however I can only
see one edit field. so i enter my license name, then do a space and paste
in my license code.

however i then hit ok and it says they are invalid.
i have tried e mailing neils bower for support, and i keep getting my
messages returned saying they couldn't be delivered.
I also converted the manual to text format to more easily read it, and I
couldn't find anything in there about registration or the compatibility
mode for blind players.
I really hope this isn't a sign of bad things to come as so far i'm not
impressed.
i mean for god sake a manual with no information in about the really basic
things such as registering?

 Hi,
I decided, after smugglers4 being for nothing on my computer. decided to
upgrade it to 1.0 h, but,
I left the game. Well the first time I insalled it I had to close it with
 task manager.
Then I kept getting an error, or to be honest 1 error per second.
Dialog after dialog with the same thing kept appearing, and I always had
to shut it down with the taskmanager.
Yesterday I decided to upgrade, and hoped it will solve my problem. nope,
 it didn't.
I'm running vista ultimate, and I'm running as an admnistrator.
 here's the error.
sorry I can't even virtualize the window, those dialogs appear many times
 1 per second.
they state that A file was not found, and the file is
 C:\Users\Piotr\Desktop\StartScreen12Highlighted.jpg

 does anyone else experience this?

2008-09-18 Thread Shadow Dragon
Yeah, I like thhose skills as well. I'm not really sure how much taunt
reduces accuracy, but it does seem to help quite a bit. I've found that a
lot of the mercenary skills help as well. Things like disciplin, maneuver
and lock I use almost every battle. I never got a chance to go for emp since
I didn't get high enough in the criminal skill tree, but one skill I am
really curious about is cloaking. I wonder what it does? I know you have to
have a target mark on the other person's ship to be able to hit them, but it
seems like it'd be just a bit too cheap to make you completely invisible and
not even grazable. Grazable? Is that a word? Anyway, once I get around to
beating the game with my mercenary, which probably won't be till fleet
combat is fully accessible, I'll have to start over, maybe as another
faction and try out some of the other skills.

2008-09-18 Thread dark
Well, I'll let you know about the skill tree. emp resistance actually
doesn't seem to work all that well, I've stil got emped (ha! I made up a
word too!), the turn after using it.

After I've done my mercinary/bounty hunter game (really, the professions are
very similar), which as you say will probably have to wait for the next
upgrade, if the trade thing is fixed with the minimize button so as to be
less of a pain, i'd like to try a full blown pirate game, with a bit of
trading thrown in, and yes, i'll be playing as the syndicate.

skills wise, taunt saves my neck a lot! then I've found it handy to try and
balance the high damage and high accuracy skills. Most turns in battles
(when no missiles are involved), I tend to use diciplin and focus beam, but
targit lock and ambush also help.

My one worry with emp skills is accurcy, sinse as you have to have lots of
criminal skills to be able to have emp and exploit, you can't have things
like targit lock, so I wonder how often you miss.

anyway, you can always get some pretty good emp effects with disrupters.

Beware the Grue!

Hi che.

when you've traveled to a planet, click the travel to this location thing
again to open the planet's menue. there will be options to speak to the
governer, buy a new ship, or buy new ship equipment.

when you open the equipment screen there will be various choices at the top,
upgrade guns, upgrade ecm etc. Click on one of those and the description of
your current item will be at the bottom, along with a upgrade option which
will bring up a list of available upgrades of that item type, with
descriptions and a buy button.

Personally, I always like to upgrade ecm and targiting systems even on the
first fighter, You could also think about upgrading the cargo bay to get
extra loot, though I'm personally waiting for traiding to be easier before I
look into that. There are some very nice missile and gun upgrades available,
but they will cost you.

Hth.

Re: [Audyssey] Smugglers 4 Is this really playable?

2008-09-17 Thread Shadow Dragon
Ok, going to reply to 3 different messages here.

Not sure if you've gotten past all this che, but if you've got the latest
version of the patch you should see just about everything on the screen to
start with. I think the only thing you can see if your patch isn't working
properly is some of the travel screen, aka planets and jump points, but you
wouldn't be able to buy ships, upgrade equipment and such. The battle screen
I think has been workable from the start, though I'm not entirely sure.
Either way I believe the patches upgrade from any version to the latest
version, so if you unzipped everything odds are you've got the latest
version.

As for the scan mode, that's mostly for finding pirates and getting into spy
missions and abduction missions and such. The options are actually attack,
communicate and back, and back's the one you want.

Dark, as of right now fleet combat isn't very accessible. Basically it looks
a bit like this. You have 3 options. Attack target yourself, selected escort
attacks and emergency shield recharge. Well I guess you have retreat as
well, but who in their right mind would ever use that option? *grin*. What
you can do, with jaws at least, is click on the graphics that are across
from eachother. In all the fleet missions I've seen, you get a fleet of 3
ships escorting you, 2 destroyers and a cruiser, and you go up against the
same and 3 battleships, so you're actually pretty heavily outnumbered. Once
you've beaten the two destroyers and the cruiser on the enemy side though,
the 3 battleships don't show up as graphics, so your only real option is to
run the mouse straight up from the attack buttonand hope for the best trying
to click on the next ship symbol to select your target. The one thing I
haven't tried yet is ground combat, I can't figure out how to engage it, but
supposedly there's supposed to be missions or raids of some kind where you
can take your crew to a planet and drop your marines planet side and kind of
supress the planets army in that fashion. I'm not sure if he scrapped that
idea or not. Either way, even without it, smugglers4 has tons of features
and is probably the closest thing to a completely accessible RPG we'll get
in a long time. I love it.

Hi shaddow dragon.

I'm not sure how that will work with hal, but sinse I abandoned my syndicate
game as it was going rather slowly and want to make a restart, it'll be a
while before i need that screen.

Are the ship graphics the same as the ones in battle? or more like the ones
on the sensor screen before it was labled. hal's always been able to get the
ship graphics, but before the sensor screen was labled I couldn' click on
any of the blips.

then again though, by the time i get to the point of needing a battleship
it's likely the screen will be labled, especially sinse apparently in the
next upgrade equipment prices are going up so as to slow the game down and
force you to try more equipment types, just see the nielsbauer forum
for details.

as reguards ground combat, i haven't heard anything about that, and there's
certainly nothing like that mentioned in the manual. the closest thing i've
seen are those missions where you have to pick up marines and then drop them
off on an enemy planet, descriptively very nice, but for practical purposes
just two nav point patrol missions.
Beware the Grue!

Re: [Audyssey] Smugglers 4 Is this really playable?

2008-09-17 Thread Shadow Dragon
I'm not really sure what you mean about the graphics, since all graphics
show up the same with jaws. I didn't see any graphics on the sensor screen
before it got fixed though, so perhaps hal is a bit better at reading
certain types of graphics. Anyway the ship graphics are kind of like the
ones that show up as planet icons, or at the bottom of the screen with
compatibility mode off.

Hmm. I'm not sure if I'm happy about the price change or not. The game did
seem to go a little fast, but it seemed to have about the right balance. If
the prices go up, then it'll go into the problem smugglers3 had where
earning money gets ridiculously tedius. I had a bit of trouble already
earning the money I needed for my first jump ship, since mercenaries have a
hard time earning money in fighting missions early on. I hope at least he
doesn't change the prices too much, or only in the later ships.

All the planets are in the game. The problem is that when you need to find a

is click on a graphic that odesn't seem to be linked to another planet, then
go down and click on the info button right near the sensor thing. Then if
you read up it'll give you name and information of the planet. Its kind of a
pain and the dev has said he's working on getting those icons labeled, but
it'll probably be a while, so that's the only solution I have for now.

Re: [Audyssey] Smugglers 4 Is this really playable?

2008-09-17 Thread dark
Hmmm, well I'm not sure on graphics, i'll just have to see when i get there.

about earning money for a jump ship, the prices for fighters are going to
stay the sme aparently, it's only from corvets and upwards that the prices
will increase. i just managed to get a shadow cat (why the heck the you
can't buy a paladin in the solar system i don't know!).

I don't actually find it too much of a problem as a mercienary to earn the
money for a jump ship, but that's because i mix the missions in with bounty
hunting the sensor screen, and don't buy too many ship upgrades, sinse as
you said the game is much more fun when you leave the first system.

what i've just done, was buy only the mars works combat engine, AND DEFENDER
mK iI ECM, then choose advanced tracking, fast recharge, and tractor beam
for the first few upgrades, though if I've got space i usually get advanced
rewards, which iis possible after fast recharge.

even before you get the tractor beam, I've found pirates are rather stupid
about remembering to flee, provided you keep them busy with missiles and use
the focus beam. Traders flee rather quickly, so the tractor beam is
absolutely necessary before you start on them, provided you only attack
enemy traders, you won't have any criminal problemS, IN FACT SINSE
THERE ARE SO MANY ENEMY TRADERS AROUND, i really don't see a point in the
criminal stuff.

I've found with just the ecm and mars works combat, i can take out an
average shadowcat with the right stratogy, for example a mission targit or
pirate, though usually those high bounty pirates have emp and are much
nastier.

what i do then is choose mainly patrol missions, with the odd ambush or
particularly rewarding search and destroy thrown in, and use the sensor
screen at every oppertunity. when my shields get depleated by taking out
pirates or traders, or when nothing appears, i move on.

that way I've managed to get a jump ship pretty qhickly as a mercenary.

the one thing i don't know is whether it's worth buying cargo management or
not, sinse on the one hand it does cost money, but on the other it can
increase loot from traders.

well, that's the way I do it.

oh btw shadowdragon, if your that far on in the game, maybe you could answer
me a question? which ability do you need in the skill tree to get focus beam
II? I know it's either double speed, mark or emp resistance, but i'm not
sure which, and I don't want to make the mistake of buying the wrong one.

Beware the grue!

hal doesn't read the mission markers, but is stil capable of reading the

Re: [Audyssey] Smugglers 4 Is this really playable?

2008-09-17 Thread Shadow Dragon
Hmm, that's an interesting strategy. Me personally, I'm an all or nothing
kind of guy, for some reason I go for the super upgrades. And actually you
can buy a paladin in about any system that I've seen, I really have no idea
what the not available thing is unless there's other ships that don't show
up. I know I've seen some ships that aren't on the list, for example the
hellcat and the corsair, I think they're federation spacific ships, so maybe
the not available thing is those ships and they don't show up because he
didn't bother to textualize the ships you couldn't buy. From basically the
corvette up though, I pretty much stole my way through the ships rather than
buy them. It's a lot easier on the purse if you can find a ship with a
fairly weak crew. It can still be tough though.

As for focus beam 2, it must be mark, since I don't have either double speed
or emp resistance. For some silly reason I went over into the criminal skill
tree after I got tractor beam, which I got way too late in the game for my
liking by the way, I like your idea better *grin*. So I'm now at rank
admiral and can't get any further mercenary skills, which sucks since I'd
really like to have emp resistance. Ah well, for another time I suppose.

Re: [Audyssey] Smugglers 4 planets

2008-09-17 Thread Shadow Dragon
Yeah, all the planets stay in each system. So if you go to new italy, if a
certain mission tells you to go to a planet in new italy, it'll always be in
new italy weather or not you need to go there, if that's what you were
asking. As for Sol, there's a lot more than that in Sol. There should be
most of the planets accept pluto, uranus, venus, neptune and murcury. All
the others, the sun and moon are in. What version of jaws are you using?
Maybe the previous versions of jaws have a lot more trouble with the way he
has the graphics labeled or something. Jupiter though is right below mars,
and right above saturn I believe. Sometimes the graphic ends up on the same
line as something else, so it might be right below mars or on the same line
as the wormhole to um. Carse I think it is?

Re: [Audyssey] Smugglers 4 planets

2008-09-17 Thread dark
ah che, i see the problem.

he galaxy thing is just a map of all the systems, you can't travel with it.
to travel to another system you need to use the worm holes in the system
your in (provided you have a ship with jump engines of course).

for all the missions you get at the start of the game, all the destinations
you need should be on the main travel screen.

When I go to galaxy, I get all the colony names, at least that is what I
think they are. Are these on particular planets? For instance, is New
 Italy
tied to one planet, so if I go there I could go to that particular planet?
The only objects I see for the Sol system are sol, saturn, earth and the
 moon.
What should I be looking for here so I might get to jupiter or any other
 planet?

Re: [Audyssey] Smugglers 4 Is this really playable?

2008-09-17 Thread dark
Oh, that's really irritating about the paladin, though I feel a fool for
just not trying. then again, it's probably more lucrative earning the extra
hundred and fifty thousand or so with a shadowcat than with an avenger,
sinse the damage is so much increased.

I've actually come to the conclusion that the best sskills in the game are
those that actually stop you from being hit, so skills like evil taunt and
emp strike deffinately have their uses. the one thing that confuses me is
why bog standard taunt doesn't seem to be in the skill tree anywhere, and
doesn't lead you to anyb more skills.

well, its' off to buy a paladin for me!

Hmm, that's an interesting strategy. Me personally, I'm an all or nothing
kind of guy, for some reason I go for the super upgrades. And actually you
can buy a paladin in about any system that I've seen, I really have no
 idea
what the not available thing is unless there's other ships that don't show
up. I know I've seen some ships that aren't on the list, for example the
hellcat and the corsair, I think they're federation spacific ships, so
 maybe
the not available thing is those ships and they don't show up because he
didn't bother to textualize the ships you couldn't buy. From basically the
corvette up though, I pretty much stole my way through the ships rather
 than
buy them. It's a lot easier on the purse if you can find a ship with a
fairly weak crew. It can still be tough though.

As for focus beam 2, it must be mark, since I don't have either double
 speed
or emp resistance. For some silly reason I went over into the criminal
 skill
tree after I got tractor beam, which I got way too late in the game for my
liking by the way, I like your idea better *grin*. So I'm now at rank
admiral and can't get any further mercenary skills, which sucks since I'd
really like to have emp resistance. Ah well, for another time I suppose.

Hi che.

firstly, did you download the update patch, even in the demo version it's
necessary for some screens, such as the choice of faction screen. Just unzip
the contents to the smugglers 4 folder.

then, when ever you start the game you'll need to activate the compatibility
mode found in the game settings in order to get the accessible interface.

hth, and I hope you like the game.

 Hi.

I was wondering if anyone had tried the update 1.0H for smugglers 4 which
makes the sensor screen and crew combat screen accessible. The sensor
screen is great, but I'm having trouble with crew combat, I'm not sure if
this is an access issue, or just a me being thick issue, so if anyone
 else
has tried it, please let me know.

You can get it here: http://www.nielsbauergames.com/updates.html

Oh btw, you'll have to have the full version of the game to play the crew
combat, sinse you need to buy a corvet class ship to engage in crew
combat. Stil, if you've got the demo version, you might find the sensor
 screen rather fun.

Re: [Audyssey] Smugglers 4 Is this really playable?

2008-09-16 Thread dark
Hi che.

firstly, i'd suggest using the update patch.

then, at the moment trading in the game is a bit of a pest, because the
trade window covers up half the planets of a system, so to see the prices of
goods it's necessary to keep closing the window, clicking a planet at the
top or bottom of the screen, then opening the window again. this is what is
necessary for the tutorial I'm afraid.

i've had a chat with the developer about fixing this, but he hasn't inserted
it into the game as yet.

to be honest I don't bother with trading, sinse it's so long winded to keep
opening and closing windows as is necessary at the moment, i just do
missions and pirate other ships, especially good now that the most
recent update has made the sensor screen accessible, and I currently have a
patan destroyer, about a million dollars, and have stopped several
invasions.

if you really want to do the tutorial, you can do it by opening the trade
window as described, but to be honest right clicking on anything in the game
(i assume you can do this with the jaws curser), willgive you information.

i think the developer would be very interested in discussing jaws scripting,
and I know he's very good about taking suggestions on board. Of course sinse
i use Hal i'm afraid i can't give any jaws specific suggestions though. the
compatibility mode of the game is a bit of a work in progress at the moment,
but I've stil been absolutely addicted to it for the last couple of days,
and i'd recommend it to anyone.

beware the grue!

Hi tj.

As i said to che, if you download the most recent update, 1.0 H, the sensor
screenis accessible, making it much easier to pick out good fat trader ships
or pirates with high bounties on their heads, this makes getting out of your

hour and a half, combining missions, bounties and piracy.

I've had some luck, and can do it. I use hot spot clicker to simulate

Also, if you were to have created scripts, I'd help in any way I could!

  Hi all,
I purchased Smugglers 4 this afternoon, as I like to support any

But so far, this is a joke I must say. Either that, or I am seriously
 missing something here.
I understand this game wasn't designed with the blind in mind, so I
figured I'd have to use the jaws cursor a good bit, I have no problem

that, but I haven't even done the first part of the tutorial and I am
showing signs of carpel tunnel syndrome here.
When the tutorial says the planet you need to go to has been marked for
you for example, I arrow all over the place trying to find said planet to
no avail, so here I am stuck with no planet to go.
You folks that are playing this game, is this thing actually fairly
smooth to play with a screenreader, or should I just go back to playing
Madden 09 on my Wii and forget about it if I am not willing to arrow
around dozens of times to get one thing done? I had thoughts of creating
scripts for this if it turned out to be playable, but right now I don't
 see that as a possibility.
Someone please tell me I am missing something here, because the game
 sounds really cool.
and yes, I have turned on compatibility mode, (thanks ShadowDragon), and
I have looked at the relevant parts of the manual, even though it is in
 the dreaded .pdf format.

Hi Michael.

as i said to che, the trade window does unfortunately obscure several
planets, which makes trading a real pest. if locations are vanishing
suggest making sure the trde window is closed before going somewhere else.
this does make trading a lot slower than in smugglers 3, but I've suggested
that nielsbauer include a minimize button, so that you can look over all the
planets of the system and the prices of the various goods without the window
in the way.

Hi Che. The accessible mode is still a work in progress. You should
 explain
your troubles to the developer so he knows what to work on. I think you're
having the same problem as I am where locations seem to disappear off the
map just when you need to go to them. It certainly isn't as easy as

Re: [Audyssey] Smugglers 4 Is this really playable?

2008-09-16 Thread Shadow Dragon
Have to say I'm a bit confused. I don't have the problems with having to
click around a lot and such. The tutorial is kind of a pain I admit. I've
never made it through the tutorial, don't think its very accessible. But the
developer is constantly working on the compatibility mode. Maybe he'd be
willing to fix up the tutorial so the icons would show up? Odds are they're
highlighted oddly when the tutorial wants you to look for it, so it doesn't
read as the text icon but instead as the graphic. Personally I think the
game is pretty awesome. Especially when you get up into the later missions,
get yourself a battleship and can participate in fleet combat, crew combat
and ground raids. Yeah you have to use the jaws cursor quite a bit, but
that's sort of what the jaws cursor was made for. *shrug* Are you guys all
running the latest version? In the version I have almost everything is
accessible. There's a little guesswork, for example when you're required to
go somewhere for a mission the textualized icon changes to a graphic because
it gets highlighted differently, and fleet combat isn't very accessible yet,
but I'm sure in the next update both issues will be either fixed or have
work started on them. I reported both this morning. Hope you all start
having better luck with the game.

Re: [Audyssey] Smugglers 4 Is this really playable?

2008-09-16 Thread dark
hi shadow dragon.

apparently fleet combat is next on the list, but sinse I haven't got a
battleship yet, I'm not sure how accessible or not it is at the moment.

my only problem with clicking around is that you have to muck about a bit to
see all the trade prices for goods in the system, that's the main
reason I think the tutorial is problematic. i actually did complete it, by
altering the position of the trade window so that hal's vf would read the
information on the planets at the top or bottom of the screen which were
obscured by it, though as i said, i think niels is going to fix this.

the tutorial marker itself didn't show up, but just look for the planet with
the lowest price good of whatever good your told to buy and it'll be that
one.

for the mission in the tutorial, just read the text for the appropriate
location.

Even though the crew hyering is perfectly easy by counting down the columns,
Niels is going to lable that screen as well so as to make things even
easier.

Have to say I'm a bit confused. I don't have the problems with having to
click around a lot and such. The tutorial is kind of a pain I admit. I've
never made it through the tutorial, don't think its very accessible. But
 the
developer is constantly working on the compatibility mode. Maybe he'd be
willing to fix up the tutorial so the icons would show up? Odds are
 they're
highlighted oddly when the tutorial wants you to look for it, so it
 doesn't
read as the text icon but instead as the graphic. Personally I think the
game is pretty awesome. Especially when you get up into the later
 missions,
get yourself a battleship and can participate in fleet combat, crew combat
and ground raids. Yeah you have to use the jaws cursor quite a bit, but
that's sort of what the jaws cursor was made for. *shrug* Are you guys all
running the latest version? In the version I have almost everything is
accessible. There's a little guesswork, for example when you're required
 to
go somewhere for a mission the textualized icon changes to a graphic
 because
it gets highlighted differently, and fleet combat isn't very accessible
 yet,
but I'm sure in the next update both issues will be either fixed or have
work started on them. I reported both this morning. Hope you all start
having better luck with the game.

 Beware the Grue!

I've had some luck, and can do it. I use hot spot clicker to simulate some
of my clicks, however, I've never actually done the tutorial.

Also, if you were to have created scripts, I'd help in any way I could!
Good game, a pain indeed to click around a lot. That and I'm tired of
killing over and over and over and over and over and over to try to get the
next ship *grins*

  Hi all,
I purchased Smugglers 4 this afternoon, as I like to support any
mainstream developer that is willing to include features to make their
 games more accessible.
But so far, this is a joke I must say. Either that, or I am seriously
 missing something here.
I understand this game wasn't designed with the blind in mind, so I
figured I'd have to use the jaws cursor a good bit, I have no problem with
that, but I haven't even done the first part of the tutorial and I am
showing signs of carpel tunnel syndrome here.
Signing out from near Alpha Centauri.

there. I am not sure if he builds in the patches as he develops them into

 Beware the Grue!

I went through the tutorial fine. I had a little problem at first finding

Hi Che. The accessible mode is still a work in progress. You should explain
your troubles to the developer so he knows what to work on. I think you're
having the same problem as I am where locations seem to disappear off the
map just when you need to go to them. It certainly isn't as easy as
Smugglers3. That's for certain. Still, when the accessible mode is all done,
Smugglers4 is definitely going to be a far supperior game. We just have to
be patient and vocal about what does and doesn't work for us.

Re: [Audyssey] smugglers 4 crew combat?

2008-09-14 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi Chris,
Officially the lists charter is for games that are accessible through
accident or by design. So if you find a mainstream game that wasn't made
for the blind but is fully or mostly acccessible it is on topic here. If
you find a game made especially for the blind that is fully accesible
then so much the better. This goes for software games as well as
ordenary board, card, and puzzle games that are accessible.

Re: [Audyssey] smugglers 4 crew combat?

2008-09-14 Thread dark
Hi chris.

A few months ago someone found an indipendent game which happened to be
accessible to screen readers, that was smugglers 3.

it's a scifi trading and batle game where you have a ship, and fly around
the galaxy trading goods and fighting in a war, all in all it's great!

the developer has been very nice about access, and now the sequal smugglers
4 is out, he's been including accessibility changes in the game as he brings
out new versions, though at this stage almost all of smugglers 4 is
accessible.

I'd deffinately recommend both smugglers games if you fancy something
incredibly absorbing.

their both commercial games, but they both have demos.

you can get them at http://www.nielsbauergames.com/index.html

hth.

to everyone else, i actually worked out the crew combat screen, it was just
a table that was slightly confusing me at first, and once I got my head
around the layout it was fine, i stil keep getting slaughtered in crew
combat though, which is irritating!

Beware the grue!

different, if you want to create a character, let me know. I'd go by
ardgon on there, would need to create that character.

 Hello Jaliya,
I am currently a monk of the House Ashura in the city of Ashtan. I am
level 25 and my characters name is Ilanthas. This mud does rely alot on
triggers and the like. There is a very good player base and they have
two dedicated newbie guides who are very helpful. They have lots of
good quests and areas that are designed for those under the level of 21.
There is also a clan for those of us who are blind. it is called Clan
TBRP. As far as the prompts go you can have it on or off. If you have
it on you can decide what you want displayed. My email is
[EMAIL PROTECTED] There are other blind players on there beside me but I
am not sure who all they are because I am still a relative newbie. Any
questions dont hesitate to ask. I will try and answer them as best I
 can.
 Sincerely,
 Greg

Re: [Audyssey] smugglers 4

2008-07-04 Thread Shadow Dragon
Yeah, I was going to announce this, but I decided to wait till it was
accessible. I emailed the author and he said he should be able to make it
more accessible by the end of this weekend, he apparently didn't have time
before the full release. Can't wait personally, the last smugglers was
pretty good, and this one's supposed to put it to shame.

Hello everyone. Smugglers 4 has just been released. Sadly, it seems to be
unplayable for blind people at this stage. However, the author is quite
eager to make it accessible to blind people. He says it should end up
being as accessible or even more accessible than Smugglers 3. Anybody with
an interest in this game should try the demo. Any suggestions as to how to
make things more accessible should be sent to:

Lets give this guy a hand and we'll have a terrific new space strategy
game on our hands. The initial screen worked alright. However, the main
screen where you travel and the like seems to be completely unworkable to
me. I use Jaws version 9. The combat screen looks equally unworkable at
this point. You can get the game at:

 Best of luck, everyone.
