There are no words that can adequately describe this film, and all I can really say about it is if you like mad cap humor, this one's for you. They fall in love and exchange marriage vows, although the state of Florida does not legally recognize their union. Sandy becomes pregnant by artificial insemination and gives birth to a daughter, Heather. The couple raise the baby together and lead a happy family life until Sandy is diagnosed with lupus and dies when Heather is only five years old. A heartbroken Janine is even more devastated when she discovers that Sandy's parents, Evelyn and Frank, to whom she was very close, have successfully gained legal custody of Heather under a state law that gives blood relatives prior claim. Grief-stricken without Sandy, and now separated from her daughter, Janine goes into an emotional collapse. Following her release from a psychiatric hospital, she picks up the pieces of her life with one resolve in mind. Enlisting a leading attorney, Terry Harrison, to fight her case, Janine appeals to the courts one more time to get her daughter back. I don't know what words there are to say about this movie that can begin to describe how I felt while watching it. From the brilliant script to the acting done by Brooke Shields, her partner, the adorable little girl, and everyone else, I was moved in a way that no other movie I have seen has affected me. I still cannot stop crying and it ended fifteen minutes ago... everyone, especially those who are cynical of domestic partnerships and their competence as parents, should see this movie. I was so happy to hear that it was based on a true story- how wonderful!! I only wish that I could contact the real Janine, and praise and thank her for being such a role model and pioneer in a controversial area that so desperately needs widespread recognition. Making a total change in theme and visual style, "Rainha..." is about an underworld drug dealer in Rio de Janeiro, called "queen" Diaba (meaning "she-devil" and played by Milton Gonçalves), who happens to be black, gay, powerful, vindictive and extremely violent. As one of Diaba's dealers and special protégé is threatened to be caught by the police, Diaba concocts with sleazy Catitu (Nelson Xavier) a plan to make small-time pimp Bereco (Stepan Nercessian) fall down in his place. But things don't turn out as expected, as treason lurks everywhere around Diaba. This was one of the first Brazilian films to deal -- in expressionist, non-realistic style -- with then new reality of large-scale organized drug dealing in Rio's favelas, on its way to become the incredibly violent and bloody business it is today. In his candid, must-see interview for the DVD release, Fontoura explains the idea behind "Diaba": every time he smoked a joint he wondered the amount of bloodshed that came with it. The most remarkable aspect of "Rainha" is its visual treatment: the colors scream, like a Frida Kahlo on acid. José Medeiros' lighting and agile camera-work are stunning, but it's Ângelo de Aquino's hallucinating, jaw-dropping sets and costumes that leave an indelible impression, making early Almodóvar seems conservative by comparison. Fontoura's sure-hand style manages to mix expressionism, hyper-realim and gory violence (be prepared to see gallons of blood throughout) with a stylized depiction of Rio's underworld, thanks to good locations and fine casting choices. The four stars of the movie are in great shape: Milton Gonçalves' Diaba is rather two-dimensional (he had no time to prepare for his role) but his hopelessly masculine physique helps: it's because he's a dog of a drag queen that his violence and anger seem legitimate. Odete Lara (Fontoura's ex-wife) is still an impressively sexy woman at 45, brave in her fight/sex scene with Bereco and giving it all in her scary torture scene, and she's obviously delighted (so are we) to have the two singing numbers that function as breath-recovering pauses for the audience. Nelson Xavier does his sleazy act wittily, maybe a tad mannered but always avoiding clichés. Most of all, it's Stepan Nercessian who steals our attention, building a living flesh-and-blood character out of Bereco, from small-time pimp to wide-eyed novice crook to trapped mouse in a big game, always managing to making us care for him, even if he's a rotten scumbag. "Diaba" is thrilling, definitely worth your time for its eye-popping colors, costumes and sets, especially in the sparkling new DVD release. He steals to survive, and the script is like a snapshot of Khaled's life at it's most important crossroad - when all of his chickens have returned home to roost, and when his life could slow down dramatically or spiral completely out of control. Through Khaled's story the viewer meets a warm hearted man who lives and travels with his partner; Hanna, a German on a holiday from hell with her two battling parents; Roos, an impressionable Dutch girl whose two crazy brothers have joined Khaled in a life of crime; John, a charming visitor from New York whose wife (played by Marisa Tomei) is too erratic for him to handle but too rich for him to leave. Khaled's brother has been trying to bring him news from Morocco, but gets tangled up with a police detective who is hunting Khaled down. This is a film showing an Amsterdam as a reluctant melting pot of diverse families - NOT a Disneyland of pot and prostitutes. It seems like a place where it's easy to pass through, but to actually live and survive there is difficult. The overlapping of stories will remind some of other films like "Crash" and "La Linea", and also of grittier ensemble dramas like "Traffic" and "Life is Hot in Cracktown". Don't be turned off by the slightly video/television look of the film, especially its opening scenes. It is definitely a film worth watching and appreciating. The result is a deeply disturbing portrait of a society that publicly promotes a strict moral code while effectively condoning systematic child abuse. Imagine being nine or ten years old. You are orphaned and living on the streets of a city in Afghanistan. You are approached by a man you do not know. He will clothe, feed and "protect" you. All you must do is learn to dance. The investigation also shows what happens when the boys mature or fall out of favour with the men who desire them. So far, she has dealt with has never been homosexual, and therefore do not know how they should react. Without further ado, they set Nicki and Hans out the door. Both go into the village inn and watched the next morning by a villager when kissing. Soon the whole village is known that John is gay, and all the prejudices of the villagers appear evident. Even Hans’ father, Christian will not initially accept the homosexuality of his son. Throughout the film he was coming with his ex-wife, Katharina, however, see a closer and that her son has found the love of his life and it does not matter to them that we are dealing with a man. Catherine takes her village choir colleagues relentlessly their mendacity in mind and Christian must recognize that his second wife Vera has spread a lie: She has claimed that Christian was the biological father of Jack, because they feared that the customer because of the homosexuality of her step-son Avoid their new car dealership could. Enraged, Catherine Vera knocks down and goes to Berlin with Christian, to Hans and his friend Christian’s and their complete solidarity to insure. Hermana de Juan Plot In what has now customarily become known as the New Queer Cinema, Almodovar's "Law of Desire" must be seen as a landmark film. Opening with a naked man masturbating and being guided through the motions by the disembodied voice of 'the director', this turns out to be something of a red-herring, though it does establish that the film's central character is a director, (Almodovar?) , and that he is gay. What follows is a teasing Hitchcockain menage-a-trois murder yarn, (not mystery), in which the homosexuality of the protagonists is very much to the fore and is hardly seen as 'an issue', (a major breakthrough in what was a mainstream Spanish movie of its day). Indeed "Law of Desire" was the film which really established Almodovar internationally and while gay-themed movies were finally making their mark in 1987 few were quite as explicitly erotic or as pleasurably in-your-face as this. Its cast was largely made up of what only be described as players from Almodovar's stock company and in a fine cast Antonio Banderas and Carmen Maura are the stand-outs; he as a pathologically disturbed 'fan' whose obsession with Eusebio Puncela's director leads to murder and she as the director's transsexual 'sister', a deliriously giddy performance and yet played mostly 'straight' by Maura. If not quite as deep as Almodovar's later movies there is nevertheless much to enjoy here, (and although dealing with tragic issues Almodovar teases out the black comedy for all its worth). Now, of course, a great deal of the fun is in slotting the film into the Almodovar canon and seeing exactly where it fits in relation to the movies that followed it. The film shows the story of life on a Danish boarding school for boys in the seventies. The focus is on the conflict between the headmasters old fashioned view of life and the much more liberal views of the boys. At one point the boy Ole is expelled for hanging pornographic pictures in the bathroom, but the boys won't let him be expelled and unite against the old fashioned views of the headmaster. Finally the teachers have to let Ole stay. We also follow Bo (15) and Kim (12) who is the headmasters son. They become very intimate and even though it is clearly more than just a friendship it is portrayed in a very innocent manner. There relationship is not portrayed as a struggle with sexual identities, but rather as something natural. They do not hide it from the other boys at school who seem to consider it normal. The film ends with all the boys at school showing a film they have made about one of the commandments in which we see Bo and Kim in an intimate but still innocent looking embrace and kiss. There are two main plots, one of which involves the US Military wishing to kill all gay men, originally by luring them to a free Barbara Streisand concert and dropping an atom bomb on them. There are further machinations in this vein after this plot fails due to usual American inefficiency of bomb-aiming and wipes out the town of Inbred, Texas instead. In the meantime, aliens from the planet Uranus, whose mission it is to make the universe gay and thus encourage peace and the arts, as well as defeating homophobia, turn the hero, played by Robert Graves into a raving queen. They want to use him as their agent for their gay-rays which can turn the whole planet gay. During continued attempts by the Military to deal with the “gay problem”, the Graves character, hypnotised by the aliens, works on their behalf to bring about a gay paradise on Earth. Winner of the BEST FEATURE AWARD at the Boston Underground Film Festival, and THE AUDIENCE AWARD at the Swiss Fantasy Film Festival, the film is so absurd as to be ravingly funny. The appeal of trying to fix Denny parallels Rusty's enjoyment of restoring old houses, Denny's emotional damage being comparable to the damage that perfectionist Rusty deals with in his work. The principal actors handle the material well, although Timothy Cole as Rusty's business partner is the weakest member of the cast. The film is far more introspective than writer/director Everett Lewis's previous work. Lewis drew upon his own experience being in a relationship with a meth addict and much of the dialog, notably Denny's monologue on how he became involved with drugs and sex work, came from life. The result is a film that feels intimate and real. My one complaint is that it feels like there is a scene missing between Denny's final angry outburst and Rusty's sending him packing. Rusty's emotional transition feels abrupt and unmotivated. It is an indictme nt of closeted politicians who lobby for anti-gay legislation in the U.S. They are dishonorable people who do dishonorable things out of weakness. If one were to tell me they thought this film was too judgmental of its subjects, I would disagree on the grounds that it remains objective to its found footage and interviewees, but I still might understand the opinion. The film is designed to outrage us by showing us the grave, sad and cyclical injustice that is being done to the gay community right this minute. But it should, because it is a view of the subject that is sadly muted in day-to-day consciousness. The reason we have generally successful politicians in a technologically developed melting pot like, apparently, the United States such as Sen. Larry Craig, Gov. Charlie Crist, Rep. David Dreier and Ed Koch is because people have family and friends whose rights as a person they vote against because they think Charlie Crist is just the most charming guy, or Larry Craig wants to do something as abstract and arguable as protecting our family values. The year is 2009 in a superpower country that claims to the rest of the world to be free and ideal. Is there any significant reason to be nice about it anymore? Kirby Dick went to great lengths to be more honest than anyone else has ever been about the MPAA Ratings Board for his vital documentary This Film Is Not Yet Rated. Doing the same here is the sole key to his achieving a state of pure rage and disheartenment at the vanity, the spinelessness, the disingenuousness required to be embraced as a candidate in the Republican Party in this day and age. Yes, even that one. Of course he seems honest and down-to-earth and brave. The subjects of this documentary appear the same to that very constituency. In This Film Is Not Yet Rated, Dick actually began an official investigation into the lives of his subjects. Similarly here, he accompanies an investigator already working on uncovering the truth about the candidates who have fought to conform to an ideology in order to use a public office to seal the deal against those who share their pain and deal with it to more constructive ends. We see some of them, too. And they make a lot more sense when they talk, because they're Mass. Rep. Barney Frank, playwrights Larry Kramer and Tony Kushner, and columnist Michelangelo Signorile. The film is exactly what your conservative family and friends need to see. I know about the unspoken peace treaty on talking politics, and you don't have to. Just recommend a documentary that just blew you away called Outrage and tell them to sit down because they've got to watch it. I always find it more interesting to see Gay life depicted in other cultures. The primary conceit of this movie--that a woman introduces her boyfriend to her Gay friends and that makes him Gay--is just sketched at. Essentially, we're observing her friends and their friends and their various respective lovers as they interact. Some of the characters are downright unlikeable, but how is that not true to life? At least among this bunch, some have interesting jobs, like the guy who produces a house/swap decorating show. And I liked the interaction with the aspiring actor/caterer and his family. When the actor/caterer's phone rings, his straight brother says, there it is, your agent. You got the lead in that snuff film. The mother looks up from her plate. What movie, she asks? It's funny. As with most Brit movies, there is class friction which may go over the heads of Americans who are not attuned to the differences between posh and non-posh accents. And there's the usual clichéd urban Gay men problems, lust, jealousy, money, jobs, etc. They ARE clichés, but let's face it, they're clichés for a reason--the problems exist. All in all, I found this an easy watch, and it held my interest, despite the clichés, despite some unlikeable characters. If you approach this with lowered expectations you might actually like it. Faint praise, I know. But I have to give it, because the movie is a lot better than other reviews would have you think. Remember that scene in the wonderful "Cinema Paradiso" (Oscar for best foreign
movie, 1990) where the village priest, a one-hand censorship committee, sits
all alone in the darkened movie theater to do his dirty deed while Philippe
Noiret's Alfredo plays him the latest flick? The one-handed deed being, of
course, that every time the screen flashes anything approaching the hint of a
kiss or a flash of flesh, up goes the priest's hand in the hysterical sign--not
of a cross, exactly, but close: of scissors. It's the prelate's unspoken signal
to Alfredo in the projection room to cut the offending bit of celluloid (often
a cousin of unpriestly cellulite) and cast it to the dust-devils of Alfredo's
cutting-room floor. So it was in 1950s Giancarlo, the tiny southern Italian
town of Giuseppe Tornatore's lip-smacking imagination.
And so it is still, it seems, in 21st century Lebanon, where something else
deserves a smack.
"Help" is a Lebanese film by director Marc Abi-Rached. It's the mostly platonic
triangular story of a delinquent teenager called Ali who lives in an abandoned
van in a junkyard, who befriends a prostitute called Soraya, who rooms with her
gay friend Janot. The themes are more daring than the scenes (for Lebanon,
anyway, where befriending a junkie can provoke all sorts of suspicions).
So far so cool. Abi-Rached got permission to distribute his movie in July 2008
from the ominously called Lebanese General Security board, which serves as the
country's film licensing authority. The board asked Abi-Rached to tone down one
image that purportedly flashed something Eve Ensler would have a monologue
about, and to restrict the movie to adults. Abi-Rached complied and got himself
a license--license number 1460, to be precise. The movie was shown to reviewers
on Feb. 12, who gave it pretty good reviews, and it was scheduled to open on
Feb. 19. And why not? There's a good bit of cursing and frank discussions about
homosexuality, but this is Beirut, after all, the Christopher Street of the
Middle East. On Feb. 16, the license was pulled. What gave?
Lebanon's clerics--Maronite Christian, Catholic, Sunni, Druze, Shiite in all
their sect-ual denominations- -can be a powerful bunch (put them together and
they could probably field a hell of a team on soccer's senior circuit, if it
existed). They control the film board, ensuring against immorality. But Lebanon
isn't Wahhabi Saudi Arabia. It's not even Lebanon, if by recent re-definitions
of Lebanon we mean what Hezbollah's turbaned Jansenists are doing to the
country's relative liberalism: Hezbollah's influence would keep a movie like
"Help" from playing in southern cities like Tyre or Sidon, but it couldn't keep
it from playing in Beirut, Junieh or even Sunni Tripoli way up north. Besides,
it's for movies like "Help" that the Arab world's hypocrites take their
vacations in Lebanon. (They want their Beirut and eat it too.)
So what could have happened to the movie? It's Lebanon, therefore it's
conspiracy time. The religious element is obvious, but too obvious. Too
convenient. The homosexual element may be a bit more convincing. Lebanon isn't
Iowa, after all (or Vermont or Massachusetts or California). It's more like the
sort of place where Antonin Scalia and Mahmoud Ahmadinejad could still feel
comfortable- -where homosexual acts are illegal.
So maybe that's what did it. Lebanon's moviemakers, from Nadine Labaki
("Caramel") to the emerging great Philipe Aractingi ("Bosta," "Under the
Bombs") and the fitfully fabulous Ziad Doueiri ("West Beyrouth," "Lila dit ça")
are an undiscovered country of force and wonders. But they tread on themes
close to Lebanon's broken heart. In "Help," Marc Abi-Rached tries the Star Trek
approach--going where no Lebanese moviemaker has gone before. Gay theme, full
monty. A dare too far?
My theory is this: it has nothing to do with the gay theme, nothing to do with
the cursing (the occasional Brooklyn Likudist aside, no one curses better than
a Lebanese) or the glimpses of nudity. No. It's about Joanna Andraos. She's one
of the stars of the movie. She's also the daughter of Antoine Andraos. Antoine
Andraos is a member of Lebanon's Parliament. Not only that. He's a member or
the ruling March 14 Alliance. He's running for reelection in June's

We don’t know many details about that meeting, except that Press eventually found the courage to “chat up” Griffin. A feature-length version—and yes, this short film merits such treatment—might explore that awkward first meeting. Still, we learn everything we need to know as the film progresses. Despite the extreme sexual chemistry between the two characters, they also share fears, which they slowly reveal to the audience and each other. “Monsters don’t live under the bed,” Press tells Griffin, in a quiet voice that sounds both frightened and threatening. During the film’s fourteen minutes, desire gives way to passion, and both give way to terror. Dex Craig (Alone, Pandemonium) provides a soundtrack that toys with that contrast, leaning more to the disturbing than to the romantic. Joel Bellucci (Star Trek: Of Gods And Men) supplies the surprising and effective CGI effects for the film’s Twilight Zone-ish ending. Jody Wheeler wrote, directed, and produced In The Closet. Wheeler gives the two actors a script that allows for a playful encounter and unguarded confessions. When Tepnapa’s character reveals his childhood phobia, he sounds like someone who still fears being alone. Corrigan’s awkwardness obviously hides something deeper as well, but his subtle hints and worried glances add to the growing dread. It is an indictme nt of closeted politicians who lobby for anti-gay legislation in the U.S. They are dishonorable people who do dishonorable things out of weakness. If one were to tell me they thought this film was too judgmental of its subjects, I would disagree on the grounds that it remains objective to its found footage and interviewees, but I still might understand the opinion. The film is designed to outrage us by showing us the grave, sad and cyclical injustice that is being done to the gay community right this minute. But it should, because it is a view of the subject that is sadly muted in day-to-day consciousness. The reason we have generally successful politicians in a technologically developed melting pot like, apparently, the United States such as Sen. Larry Craig, Gov. Charlie Crist, Rep. David Dreier and Ed Koch is because people have family and friends whose rights as a person they vote against because they think Charlie Crist is just the most charming guy, or Larry Craig wants to do something as abstract and arguable as protecting our family values. The year is 2009 in a superpower country that claims to the rest of the world to be free and ideal. Is there any significant reason to be nice about it anymore? Kirby Dick went to great lengths to be more honest than anyone else has ever been about the MPAA Ratings Board for his vital documentary This Film Is Not Yet Rated. Doing the same here is the sole key to his achieving a state of pure rage and disheartenment at the vanity, the spinelessness, the disingenuousness required to be embraced as a candidate in the Republican Party in this day and age. Yes, even that one. Of course he seems honest and down-to-earth and brave. The subjects of this documentary appear the same to that very constituency. In This Film Is Not Yet Rated, Dick actually began an official investigation into the lives of his subjects. Similarly here, he accompanies an investigator already working on uncovering the truth about the candidates who have fought to conform to an ideology in order to use a public office to seal the deal against those who share their pain and deal with it to more constructive ends. We see some of them, too. And they make a lot more sense when they talk, because they're Mass. Rep. Barney Frank, playwrights Larry Kramer and Tony Kushner, and columnist Michelangelo Signorile. The film is exactly what your conservative family and friends need to see. I know about the unspoken peace treaty on talking politics, and you don't have to. Just recommend a documentary that just blew you away called Outrage and tell them to sit down because they've got to watch it. Im-bo Synopsis A Frozen Flower got billed as "The Year's Sexiest Blockbuster" , and writer-director Ha Yu's movie could probably be also billed as an equivalent to Zhang Yimou's Curse of the Golden Flower, given its period setting and schemes within a royal household, plenty of gorgeous costumes, opulent production sets, with a tinge of wire-fu martial arts and a chock load of mixed romances thrown in for good measure too. Set in the Korean Koryo era where it's under the control of the Mongol's Yuan Dynasty, the current gay Koryo King (Joo Jin Mo) sets up his own elite bodyguard troops, recruiting 36 young boys to undergo extreme training and eliciting pledges of unfettered loyalty from this group of trusted men. Amongst all he favours Hong Lim (Jo In Sung), and spent plenty of personal and quality time with his pet, from the open plains hunting to the courtyards training, right down to the games both play in the royal bedroom. Nepotism runs in the royal household, since it's an open secret as to why the King appoints Lim as chief of his bodyguards, undoubtedly also because of the advantage of up close and personal already from within the royal chambers. The male-centric world soon got shaken by the introduction of the Yuan princess to be Queen (Song Ji Hyo) in an alliance forged by marriage, and I guess you can see how this third party could cause severe problems. Pressure mounts when the royal family is expected to bear an heir, otherwise a successor to the throne will be appointed. This displeases the King of course, given someone on the outside waiting in the wings for his demise, but then his sexual preference also meant that he can't get it up. So in desperation, he crafts a crazy plan in over to hang onto power, and that's to order his lover Hong, to impregnate the Queen and produce an heir whom he will accept as his own, thereby protecting his throne. The Queen reluctantly agrees of course, but as a woman who accepted to be loyal to the kingdom, she's got to do what is best for her husband. As for Hong, well, it's duty toward both King and Country. What this does is in fact to push both the Queen and Hong into an uncontrollable sexual awakening, which the rest of the film pretty much centres upon, dealing in relationships, and the vast emotions that come along with it, including the negative ones like jealously and ultimately, rage and hatred. While at first Hong couldn't get himself to betray his first love, I guess it probably is easier for any guy to treat sex as sex without an emotional baggage, though it did tickle Hong's heart that perhaps the female of the species was more interesting, and his breakaway from a male-centric relationship, was seen as a betrayal and treason to the King. As for the Queen, the power of fleshly pleasures from this perverse consummation of a marriage, sees to it that she gains some strength in taking over some control in her restricted life, and plots to seduce Hong even more so that she could satisfy her lust, which for both parties, transform into a healthy heterosexual relationship in which the King obviously despises. I suspect there will be some quarters cheering the film in depicting that homosexuality can be cured by a good dose of sex to open their minds, but I thought it was more of a matter of choice and opportunity being presented here, since the sexual preference get contrasted between Hong and the King's is quite clear – one's obviously following the heart, the other his orders, which slowly developed into silent insubordination, before the heart fully takes over. In any case this romantic triangle will push and probe when you're viewing this, as there are plenty of insights to gain from if you were to put yourself into the shoes of either party, and determine how you would react to the sequence of lustful events.
