[brlug-general] Memory 64gb total...

2018-08-02 Thread Brad Bendily
Howdy Folks.
I have 4 16GB Dimms that are Dell branded made by Hynix.
They were supposed to go into a Dell T5810 Precision workstation, but
this specific Mobo/model only accepts Registered Dimms... these are
UNregistered.

Workstation specs:
https://qrl.dell.com/Files/en-us/Html/DellPrecisionT5810/T5810_MemoryPop.html

This is the old Amazon link where I bought the mem.
It was paid for through my companies' purchasing dept, and getting a
return processed through that will be a huge pain. The RAM is not
tagged or marked by my company in any way.

https://www.amazon.com/Certified-Memory-SNP7XRW4C-A8661096-Arch/dp/B06WWH2TTT/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1511989529&sr=8-3&keywords=DIMMS+2133+DDR4+RDIMM+ECC+dual+rank

So the price was roughly $250 a piece.

I'm willing to let this go for half that price, or best offer if
anyone is interested.
These should work in any gamer workstation or other.

$500 anyone?

Unless someone wants to swap 4x8GB Registered Dimms?

That's my goal at this point. Take the price hit and buy the 4x8GB
Dimms to just add to what I have now, which will give me a total of
64GB in my workstation.

I waited several months before installing the RAM and the machine
wouldn't even power on with the RAM installed. Did some more digging
and found the Reg/UnReg'd thing.

Lots of other Dell machines don't require Registered Dimms.

tldr... please buy my RAM!

thanks
bb

Re: [brlug-general] Is there a way to determine the host VMware box for a VM from inside the VM?

2013-10-09 Thread Brad Bendily
I'm pretty sure there is not a way to do this.
You would think it would be easily possible, since they are able to get
time from the host.

Btw, you can do this with guess running on IBM's z/OS. There is a "vmcp"
command that shows all kinds of great info about
the host. "vmcp ind user".
It doesn't help, but i've been working on SuSE running in z/OS and wrote a
lot of scripts to configure an OS based on using that command.

I would love to do the same thing in Linux servers on VMware, but there is
no way to read the Vmname from the VM.
But, you can remove the 70-persistent-net.rules file, then when the VM
boots, it will get a DHCP address. Then you can have a script to run
on first boot to download a file and load the IP/hostname from that. Or,
that's what i plan to do.

The main problem I have isn't the high latency, i could deal with that,

[brlug-general] Cox internet service slow in evenings?

2013-08-29 Thread Brad Bendily
Does anyone else have cox internet and notice much slower speed and
reliability in the evenings?

I've been running smokeping for a few weeks and every evening, about 7-11
speed and latency is very sporadic. I'm not 100% how long this has been a
problem but back in april/may I started a new project where I have been
working from home more and need to use a VPN to connect to another network.
Actually, two different VPNs on two different networks. One, is Dell
Sonicwall and the other is a Cisco. The Cisco, is surprisingly very stable
and even though the network is flakey the Cisco stays connected. But the
Sonicwall is very sensitive to the network outages. Any time the network
glitches the Sonicwall disconnects and all my SSH connections drop. Now I
RDP to a server on the network and run the SSH sessions from there. So I
don't lose everything.

But, this brings me back to Cox's evening service. A tech came out about a
month ago and checked my signals which were all in the good range, he even
replaced the cable modem on good faith. Even though the one I had was only
a few months old.I replaced a much older linksys docsis2, with the Cisco
docsis3 modem. So, the tech replaced my modem with mostly the same model
modem, but still the signals are good. Normally, running a speed test on
speedtest.net, i get around 30Mbps down, 15Mbps up. Just now, i got .75Mbps
down, and 4Mbps up.
My smokeping is hitting 3 Cox DNS servers and one of their web servers and
a handful of other high profile servers. As well as two of my own personal,
which have no traffic and should be no lag what so ever. Yet smokeping
shows dropped packets and higher latency.

I've called a few more times to try to explain the problem again. Monday i
called and the guy said they will send someone to check from the house out.
Last night I called and the person wanted to schedule a tech to come to the
house again. I asked for level 2 support and was put on hold for an hour. I
eventually hung up.

If I were just web surfing, i would probably have never noticed and
probably wouldn't care, but now that i'm using the VPN a lot it would be
nice to have stable service in the evenings.

has anyone else run into this and have any suggestions about how I can get
to the bottom of it with cox?

I don't want to move to another ISP, but if it comes down to it, i will.

thoughts? suggestions? bullshit remarks from jarred?

Re: [brlug-general] Professional Data Recovery in BR or NO?

2013-08-09 Thread Brad Bendily
In the future, once the data is restores, I recommend Crashplan. Been using
them for a year now and so far so good. I need to test more restores, but
the few files I did try were ok. $5/month to backup unlimited data is a
pretty sweet deal.
Also, their client is neat. I'm currently backing up my Mother-in-laws and
my mothers computers directly to mine, with the crashplan client, over the
internet.
And my wife's laptop at home also backs up to my desktop. I don't send
their data to crashplan, but at least I have a second copy. Mostly just
pictures.

[brlug-general] Digital Ocean

2013-08-09 Thread Brad Bendily
So, years ago I created a "slice" at Slicehost to run my personal website
and
have root on a box somewhere. A few years ago, Rackspace bought Slicehost
and then about
a year ago my VM was moved into the Rackspace managed site. Which has been
working fine.
In fact, my cost from slicehost to rackspace was cut in half because of the
difference in
rackspace's pricing model. So, i went from $20/month to $11 or so.
But, that slice runs an older Gentoo and i can't seem to get it to upgrade
with an emerge.
To much stuff fails, i fought it for a while but gave up.
Then I found this site:
https://www.digitalocean.com/pricing

For the same price i'm currently paying, $10/mo. I can triple my current
specs. or for half the price, i can double my specs. So, for $10/mo. i've
created a CentOS 6.4 "droplet". 1GBmem. 1 CPU, 30GB SSD Disk with 2TB
transfer.
My current slice is 256m, 10gb, 1TB, 4xcpu.

So far so good. There are less OS choices than rackspace, but enough
options.
If I build a new VM at rackspace, it would be $16/mo. Rackspace doesn't
have the VM choice that
I currently have.

If you're interested, please use this code:

 https://www.digitalocean.com/?refcode=416e93cbbf4e

Yeah. This isn't some bogus company with a few developers, this is a HUGE
deal for Baton Rouge area technology.
It's like when McDonalds builds on an empty corner somewhere and everyone
else follows them and builds there too.
When IBM shows up in your town, others are sure to follow.

IMO. :-

A few things I left out. The position is located in Downtown Baton Rouge.
Working for DCFS in their Iberville building.

My guess on the salary, for a recent or close graduate, $50-$60K.
For an experienced person, $60-$80K.

[brlug-general] Android tablet for sale.

2011-12-28 Thread Brad Bendily
Guys,
I'm wanting to sell my Viewsonic gTablet. $200.
In addition, i'll add the case I bought that fits very well on the tablet.
It plays movies well, plays music, works with the apps I downloaded.
I didn't try a lot of apps. Works with the Google app store and the
Amazon app store.
I have found that i haven't been using it much. I had bought an iPad
for the wife, she
isn't using it, so I use it more.

There is a lot of info here if you'd like to see:
http://www.viewsonic.com/gtablet/

The short of the specs are;
-1GHz NVIDIA Tegra 2 - Dual-core ARM Cortex-A9 CPU
-512MB DDR
-10.1" TFT-LCD with LED driver system and 1024x600 resolution
(capacitive touch screen)
-WiFi : 802.11 b/g/n
-16GB internal memory (expandable up to 32GB via SD Card)

It came with a shoddy Viewsonic version of Android 2.2. I can put it back to
stock if you'd like or leave the current version of Honeycomb on it.
It's currently running the Bottle of Smoke alpha 6 build, Honeycomb v3.0.1.
There is a pretty large mod community for the gTablet at both
slatedroid and xda.

This is a link to the current OS i'm running:
http://www.slatedroid.com/topic/17863-rom-12-bottle-of-smoke-honeycomb-for-gtab-g-tabletzpad-t2/

Dev forums:
http://www.slatedroid.com/forum/199-viewsonic-g-tablet-12-rom-development/
http://forum.xda-developers.com/forumdisplay.php?s=274a4b2ef9cd85465e692d6182a12fb8&f=844

It appears that Flashback v10.3 is the best current version of
Honeycomb available.
I can help someone upgrade to this or do it for you, if you prefer.

$200.

Thanks,
Brad B.

[brlug-general] Fwd: C|Net Download.Com is now bundling Nmap with malware!

2011-12-06 Thread Brad Bendily
FYI...

-- Forwarded message --
From: Fyodor
Date: Mon, Dec 5, 2011 at 4:35 PM
Subject: C|Net Download.Com is now bundling Nmap with malware!
To: nmap-hack...@insecure.org

Hi Folks.  I've just discovered that C|Net's Download.Com site has
started wrapping their Nmap downloads (as well as other free software
like VLC) in a trojan installer which does things like installing a
sketchy "StartNow" toolbar, changing the user's default search engine
to Microsoft Bing, and changing their home page to Microsoft's MSN.

The way it works is that C|Net's download page (screenshot attached)
offers what they claim to be Nmap's Windows installer.  They even
provide the correct file size for our official installer.  But users
actually get a Cnet-created trojan installer.  That program does the
dirty work before downloading and executing Nmap's real installer.

Of course the problem is that users often just click through installer
screens, trusting that download.com gave them the real installer and
knowing that the Nmap project wouldn't put malicious code in our
installer.  Then the next time the user opens their browser, they
find that their computer is hosed with crappy toolbars, Bing searches,
Microsoft as their home page, and whatever other shenanigans the
software performs!  The worst thing is that users will think we (Nmap
Project) did this to them!

I took and attached a screen shot of the C|Net trojan Nmap installer
in action.  Note how they use our registered "Nmap" trademark in big
letters right above the malware "special offer" as if we somehow
endorsed or allowed this.  Of course they also violated our trademark
by claiming this download is an Nmap installer when we have nothing to
do with the proprietary trojan installer.

In addition to the deception and trademark violation, and potential
violation of the Computer Fraud and Abuse Act, this clearly violates
Nmap's copyright.  This is exactly why Nmap isn't under the plain GPL.
Our license (http://nmap.org/book/man-legal.html) specifically adds a
clause forbidding software which "integrates/includes/aggregates Nmap
into a proprietary executable installer" unless that software itself
conforms to various GPL requirements (this proprietary C|Net
download.com software and the toolbar don't).  We've long known that
malicious parties might try to distribute a trojan Nmap installer, but
we never thought it would be C|Net's Download.com, which is owned by
CBS!  And we never thought Microsoft would be sponsoring this
activity!

It is worth noting that C|Net's exact schemes vary.  Here is a story
about their shenanigans:

http://www.extremetech.com/computing/93504-download-com-wraps-downloads-in-bloatware-lies-about-motivations

It is interesting to compare the trojaned VLC screenshot in that
article with the Nmap one I've attached.  In that case, the user just
clicks "Next step" to have their machine infected.  And they wrote
"SAFE, TRUSTED, AND SPYWARE FREE" in the trojan-VLC title bar.  It is
telling that they decided to remove that statement in their newer
trojan installer.  In fact, if we UPX-unpack the Trojan CNet
executable and send it to VirusTotal.com, it is detected as malware by
Panda, McAfee, F-Secure, etc:

http://bit.ly/cnet-nmap-vt

According to Download.com's own stats, hundreds of people download the
trojan Nmap installer every week!  So the first order of business is
to notify the community so that nobody else falls for this scheme.
Please help spread the word.

Of course the next step is to go after C|Net until they stop doing
this for ALL of the software they distribute.  So far, the most they
have offered is:

"If you would like to opt out of the Download.com Installer you can
  submit a request to cnet-instal...@cbsinteractive.com. All opt-out
requests are carefully reviewed on a case-by-case basis."

In other words, "we'll violate your trademarks and copyright and
squandering your goodwill until you tell us to stop, and then we'll
consider your request 'on a case-by-case basis' depending on how much
money we make from infecting your users and how scary your legal
threat is.

F*ck them!  If anyone knows a great copyright attorney in the U.S.,
please send me the details or ask them to get in touch with me.

Also, shame on Microsoft for paying C|Net to trojan open source
software!

Cheers,
Fyodor

they have some archiving products.

we used to use them for antivirus on groupwise, but I didn't work with
the product or company so I

I have mixed feelings about the controversy that Cox brings up.
One the one hand, they should be held to the same standard as everyone else, but
on the other hand, i would like to see local businesses get some

Re: [brlug-general] Programming certification.

2011-06-30 Thread Brad Bendily
Back to the certification issue, something is better than nothing in most cases.
I assume most hiring managers, if they don't know about w3schools or
LSU or whatever other
cert you have, (and this totally depends on the number of applications
they receive) would
look it up and try to ascertain if it is a decent cert. No one things
because you have a cert
in X, that you're an expert in X, but they do think at least you have
some knowledge and the
desire to learn and go out to get a cert.
If a hiring manager receives hundreds of apps from individuals, then
those will most likely be
weeded out by HR. And HR is going to look for matching up items from
the resume to items
requested on the posting.

Regarding w3schools, if someone looks that up, they may think, "this
is an online
only test" and therefore may decide to not give as much weight as a
cert you took a course for
and then a test at LSU with a proctor involved. Not that one is better
than the other, but it's about
perception. You may want to search for industry recognized certs, i'm
not sure what those are
for web programming, but that may be the best option instead of random
classes at lsu.

The tough part for you, that i can tell, is you're just trying to get
certs to have something, then going to
find a job? I suggest looking for jobs you want, then getting certs
they request/desire.
Most postings will say, X cert required or desired.
Certs aren't the end all, but they certainly help get your resume past
HR, but usually if it's the cert
that is mentioned in the posting.

That said, the 3-4 jobs I have had have been mostly by reference, then
me being able to sell myself.
One of which was a reference right here on BRLUG. (actually, my current job).

I would say keep trying, and don't not apply for a job cause you don't
match what's listed.
One thing to remember about a job posting is that they request/desire
an expert, but only want to
pay entry level. My thought has always been, you may not have all the
desired skills, but you may
be the most skilled person to apply.

It still doesn't have full hardware acceleration, so no flash vidoes
and possibly some other vids, def no HD.
but standard vids should play.
It plays angry birds ok.

good enough for web surfing and reading email. speaking of, the email
app in froyo and gingerbread was
terrible. the one from honeycomb is much better, a lot more like the
gmail website.

So, did get the Viewsonic Gtablet and there has finally be a solid
Honeycomb port for it. I've been running the mod for a week and
it has been very stable. The only problems have been with apps that
don't work on honeycomb and it's hard to tell from the app store which ones
those are.

I followed this thread to do the install:
http://www.slatedroid.com/topic/17863-rom-12-bottle-of-smoke-honeycomb-for-gtab-g-tabletzpad-t2/

It's very sweet and i'm very surprised.
With Froyo or Gingerbread, this tablet wasn't very useful to me, i am not
impressed by either of those OS versions, but honeycomb makes a huge
difference and makes
the gtab a completely different tablet, so much more useful now.

I have a viewsonic gtablet coming tomorrow that will let me begin
poking around with
some android development. If you're looking for a device, it seems
like a good/cheap option. otherwise, no, i haven't done any dev on

i assume you've looked at xda?

i haven't looked at any actual development threads, but i'm sure there is plenty
there to get you started.

Re: [brlug-general] Android tablets? tabloids? tabdroids?

2011-03-29 Thread Brad Bendily
So. I did buy an iPad2 (for the wife). It's cool, speedy, screen is
decent (could have been better). Aside from iOS, it's probably the
best tablet on the market.
However, i decided i wanted an Android tablet for myself. And, if so, honeycomb
was/is the way to go. A buddy of mine bought a Xoom. It's really nice,
also speedy,
nice screen, honeycomb is nice, cool widgets that iOS doesn't have. But the 3g
model was more than i wanted to spend and I don't think i'll use the
service. So, i
was going to wait for the wifi only model. Then woot came along with the
Viewsonic gtablet for $280. Which as Tim said previously, is the
tegra2 dual core chip.
Same hardware as the xoom just about, except for the screen. I don't have
the gtab yet, supposed to be here tomorrow, but for that price it
seemed like a really
good deal, considering the hardware. Also, as Tim said, there is a pretty big
modding/following at xda. There are about 6 or so different roms all
of which claim to be
more speedy/responsive than the default OS. So, even though it won't
be honeycomb,
it's still android and is pretty quick.
regarding the 3 links below. Apparently the Adam Ink has shipped, but
there seems to
be a lot of questions surrounding that tablet. They're still not taking
orders and a lot
of folks had concerns about the ones that did ship, and I think people
are still waiting
for some of their orders.
I've never noticed before, how there was so much talk and hype at the
trade shows
and then all of these tablets never show up. sucks for the consumer.
but hey, there is always duke nukem forever to look forward to!

Re: [brlug-general] Android tablets? tabloids? tabdroids?

2010-12-20 Thread Brad Bendily
Well. I already have an iPhone. So I don't really want the maxipad version of
the same limited thing. Plus I really wanted to play around with android.
I read last week that the viewsonic tabs were being pulled from some shelves.
But I don't know any details beyond that.
What got me started is that there are a few $100-$200 models. So i was
considering one of them. But if I buy something I don't want to buy a piece of
crap. So I might wait and see what comes out from ces.

[brlug-general] Android tablets? tabloids? tabdroids?

2010-12-20 Thread Brad Bendily
Those last two I made up, at least I think I did. i haven't google'd em yet.

Does anyone have a droid tablet? any suggestions on droid tablets?

I've been doing some reading and, if I wanted to spend more than an
ipad, i could
get a Galaxy tab, but i'd like to keep my cost under an ipad.
At the moment, there seems to be a lot of cheap knock off's and it's hard
to tell what's real or not, and what's good or not.
Also, I want at least a 10" screen. Maybe 8" if the price is right.

has anyone purchased anything, been looking at anything?

I read some decent stuff about the archos 10.1" tab, but it's $500.

and this is... well, i dunno.
http://www.nowsupplier.com/android-22-os-tablet-inch-with-freescale-imx515-cortex-a8-chip-support-flash-player-10512m-ram-p-1413.html

there's an apad and epad.

what say you?

Re: [brlug-general] Google Voice on Asterisk?

2010-12-15 Thread Brad Bendily
I can't wait to answer this question.
total cost, $0.
total recurring cost, $0.

Google allows free calling within the US.
If you were to build a box, or add a box to your network, you'd have
cost for power.
but since asterisk can run on the smallest of machines, that cost can
be negligible.
I already had a box running, which is another reason i wanted asterisk on that
box too, keeping my power cost down.
I had Vonage for about 5 years or more. And, i was using less than 100 minutes
per month and my cost kept creeping up. So I dropped it, but i'm
hoping this new
setup will be stable and let me replace that with no loss of functionality.

This works with my google voice number and allows incoming/outgoing calls
from the SIP phone on my network. I intend to get a wifi SIP phone and will
be able to use around the house.
so far so good.

Re: [brlug-general] Google Voice on Asterisk?

2010-12-15 Thread Brad Bendily
i got back to looking at it, upgraded asterisk to 1.8.1,
then applied this patch from svn:

svn checkout http://svn.asterisk.org/svn/asterisk/branches/1.8 chan_gtalk.c
cp chan_gtalk.c/channels/chan_gtalk.c ~/asterisk/channels/
cd ~/asterisk
make
make install

based off this piaf forum post:
http://pbxinaflash.com/forum/showthread.php?p=55137#post55137

and now my google voice calls work like a champ.
i'm sure my configs are inefficient and could be tweaked, but they
work, so i'll leave it as is.

piaf has so much loaded on top and I wanted just the asterisk phone
calling part, which is
why i started with piaf, to get it working then wanted to move it to a
linux box I already had
running. so far so good. the piaf configs have so many additions, it
was really hard to compare
that to a standalone option.

Re: [brlug-general] mdadm / filesystem questions...

2010-12-14 Thread Brad Bendily
You may want to figure out which kernel you were on before and go back
to that one, just
to see if it's actually the kernel. If i you revert, and it works ok,
then you can read
what was changed in the newer kernel docs. I'm assuming you're using
your distro's kernel and
not rolling your own? If so, you can wait for your distro to upgrade
to a newer kernel that fixes your
problem, or roll your own kernel.

I had a situation once on a Dell 2650 a certain kernel from our distro
caused high I/O wait times.
This was fixed by a new kernel from the distro. Fortunately I didn't
have to roll my own. I may have
tried that, but I didn't realize the kernel was the problem until I
had upgraded.

It could possibly also be updates in the mdadm software. But, for
troubleshooting purposes
I would only change one thing at time at this point. Starting with the kernel.
Also, is your raid drivers compiled in the kernel, or as modules?
You could possibly just revert the raid driver, but those may want a
matching kernel.
Or you could compile your own newer raid drivers against your current kernel.

[brlug-general] Google Voice on Asterisk?

2010-12-10 Thread Brad Bendily
Has anyone been playing with asterisk lately?
Have you setup the google voice through asterisk 1.8?

i used the nerdvittles, PIAF, then installed a standalone asterisk and moved
my configs to that.
http://nerdvittles.com/

It was working pretty well until around Dec 1. then it seems that
google changed something
so outbound calls weren't working.
That has been fixed now, but i have yet to apply the fix on my setup.

just curious if anyone else has been using this? I don't have much time using
asterisk and to get the standalone version working i've just been
making wild random
changes when i find something, and somehow got it to work.

Dell has a nifty rack configurator ("Capacity Planner") site:

It gives you some numbers, but I don't really know how to translate
those numbers into
what's needed for A/C or power.

Re: [brlug-general] Offsite DNS hosting for Active Directory

2010-10-01 Thread Brad Bendily
We don't use a service to do this, but we host AD DC DNS on our
Linux/BIND DNS boxes.
I haven't done the AD side, but apparently there's a tool to extract
the DNS entries and then
they can get imported into BIND. So, it should be fairly easy to do.
You could also setup
a master/slave trust between the zones and the entries can be pulled that way.
If you had a DNS host, running linux that would open to trying a few things.

[brlug-general] DNSSEC changes on May 5?

2010-05-03 Thread Brad Bendily
Has anyone been looking at these DNSSEC changes that are going to happen on all
the DNS root servers on May 5?

http://etherealmind.com/dnssec-and-why-the-internet-probably-wont-break-today/

Following the test dig commands at the bottom of that page i get:

dig @158.43.128.1 +short rs.dns-oarc.net txt
rst.x3827.rs.dns-oarc.net.
rst.x486.x3827.rs.dns-oarc.net.
rst.x456.x486.x3827.rs.dns-oarc.net.
"62.189.58.236 sent EDNS buffer size 4096"
"Tested at 2010-05-03 14:25:49 UTC"
"62.189.58.236 DNS reply size limit is at least 3827"

for the DNS server that supports DNSSEC. So, based on this it looks
like our firewall is
working correctly, right?

but, it looks like if I do the dig using my DNS server then the reply
is limited:

dig +short rs.dns-oarc.net txt
rst.x476.rs.dns-oarc.net.
rst.x485.x476.rs.dns-oarc.net.
rst.x490.x485.x476.rs.dns-oarc.net.
"205.172.49.107 DNS reply size limit is at least 490"
"Tested at 2010-05-03 14:31:18 UTC"
"205.172.49.107 sent EDNS buffer size 4096"

but, my server would have to go to the internet to look that domain
up, which would go through the firewall, which could be
limiting the response, right?

At this time, I don't need DNSSEC enabled on my domain server to talk
to the root servers, but i suppose i'll want to enable it
at some point.

Re: [brlug-general] Novell to soon be the next Sun?

2010-03-31 Thread Brad Bendily
shutup.

actually, i learned something really cool.
not sure if everyone has heard of the SuSE Studio project?
http://susestudio.com/

It lets you build ISOs or images for USB stick or VMWare/Xen on the fly.
What's really cool though, is that they have a "testdrive" feature.
You build the ISO, to include whatever packages you want, and before
you download
it you can click the "testdrive" button and it will startup the image
and you can
make changes right then and there. And when you're done, you click "build"
and it will make a neat ISO/etc for you.
Very cool.

Another cool product they have is ZCM, Zenworks Configuration Management.
It's been around for a while and it has had its share of problems, but
each version gets
better and better. The soon to be release ZCM 10-sp3 has a lot of
improvements and
several new features. But the core of the product is enterprise wide
desktop management.
You can send patches to single or groups of machines. You can set
Group policy settings the same way. You can track software usage, so
you can ensure software compliance! It has
some audit features. You can build applications packages and deploy
them to specific workstations.
I don't know of any other product that cover all of these things.

Of course, they also offer and enterprise version of linux that can
run on PC or mainframe,
and they provide support for that product. Businesses don't want to
run Gentoo or Debian,
they want something they can pick up a phone and call tech support
for, so two companies
can provide that for linux.

and there's more...

The interesting part isn't that they're getting away from
 MySQL. It's
that they're getting away from a relational database and
 moving to a
 key/value type database.

create a new user and see if you get it back from there?
kde has a kmenuedit command, so if you get the full menu from your new
user you should
be able to export stuff from that user and the import it into your

or just start using a new username.

meh.
before i finished reading the link i was thinking they're changing it
cause yahoo is gonna give them money.
but, to me it doesn't really matter. i don't see any person using
ubuntu caring either. cause anyone using ubuntu
is going to know how to change the default to what they want any way.
every time I reload windows I have to change
the default search to google. i mean, open source projects need money too.

ot, what is the deal with ubuntu lately. why is everyone jumping on
the ubuntu bandwagon?
it seems a little too dumbed down to me. too minimalistic.

2010-02-15 Thread Brad Bendily
I found this on freshmeat the other day, but haven't used it:
http://freshmeat.net/projects/gadmin-bind

there are a few others, but not simple stuff.
ex:
http://iptrack.sourceforge.net/

open net admin
http://opennetadmin.com/
last I looked at this it isn't 100% ready for DNS admining, but it's
coming along.

There are several active people on the mailing list but the group
hasn't gathered for regular meetings in a long time. I don't think
anyone would be opposed if you offered some suggestions.
Maybe we could just pick the same day of the week each month and meet
and if folks can make it then good?
I'm not sure if there is enough support for that.
Any thoughts on that group? Maybe some changes for 2010?
I'm going to be trying to attend meettings with the tigertrap group so
I'm not sure what other meetings I can make but I'll try.

Re: [brlug-general] General Digest, Vol 77, Issue 1

2009-11-05 Thread Brad Bendily
yeah. it seems to me that using the -c flag is an extra step. that I
have to put the sum from the web
into a file, then generate a sum on the iso file I have, then add that
to the file too, then use the -c to compare?
Am i making it more difficult than it really is?

at least, to use my script, it does it both at the same time and from one cmd.
script.sh filetocheck checksumxxx

then it spits out, match or no match.
the strange thing is, after googling a bit to find something similar,
i found several post where people
are saying their sums dont match, but they think they have the same file.
I didn't read the details on all the post but it looks possible.

if there's anyone not to listen to, it's this jarred fella.

at&t used to be cingular, who used to be at&t, who used to be
bellsouth, who used to be bellsouth mobility who WAS the biggest
carrier in south louisiana, so to me this gives the now
at&t the best coverage in louisiana at least. however, i don't know if
it's my iphone or poor tower location, i have found some bad areas in
town.

and, they say you shouldn't have problems when switching towers, but that's BS.
