I've just come back to Hadoop after an absence of 18 months, and I see
that a development environment for Hadoop-related computing and data
warehousing tools (MapReduce, Spark [SQL|Streaming], Pig, HBase, Hive,
 etc)
and their libraries (Mahout, Giraph, MLlib and GraphX) is still missing,
and that there *is* a real need for it. Any cloud provider worth their
 salt
offers a Hadoop as a platform service where you can deploy a cluster
 within
minutes, but there's no way to get started developing jobs right away.
 And
I see organisations struggle with this on private deployments as well.
Stacks like Hue and IPython Notebook and simple stepping stone nodes fill
part of the gap, but I think we can do way better.

I've just come back to this space, and this is a problem I'm addressing
for my current client (a bank) as well. If somebody would like to discuss
tackling this together then lets set up a short call. I do have to say
 that
looking at the current Hadoop toolset, I'm no longer convinced that
 Eclipse
is the way to go here.

  Best,
  Evert

I still have hopes of doing more stuff with Hadoop and HDT in the

but job responsibilities keep shifting in unexpected directions, and
  health

If retired, will this list remain active? Otherwise, it might be hard
 to
  gather the 3 active people...

I think there's significant needs that are going unmet that we could be
addressing, if people (myself included) had the time to devote to it.

I've not stopped monitoring the list, and I do hope to contribute in
 the
future. If it is retired, what will be the mechanics for contributing
 new
code? Would it have to be brought out of retirement before that could
happen via Apache? (Obviously, a fork on GitHub would be an option, but
that might detract from a path back to active Apache involvement).

Re: [VOTE] Release HDT version 0.0.2.incubating (RC1)

2014-07-27 Thread Rahul Sharma
Thanks Justin for the vote.

- We will take care of naming in next release.

- As for keeping eclipse .settings, .project as part of source, we have
taken this step. The rational behind this is, HDT is eclipse plugin and the
eclipse stores some metadata info which is difficult to be generated by
maven. Thus we discussed this out in HDT-39[1] and kept the settings are
part of source. For .gitignore files I have created a JIRA[2] for the same.

Rahul

You may want to consider changing in a future release:
 - Adding apache to release artefact name
 - There's a number of .classpath, .project, .settings, .gitignore files in
the source release - should they be there?

 Thanks,

Hi,

Apologies for not clearing my point.

The EPL license is for some of the images eg.
delete/download/upload/local_resource under 'org.apache.hdt.ui/icons'. The
license is not for the images related to Mapper/Reducer/Driver etc i.e
Hadoop related stuff. These images under the icons folder are being used
as 'Icons' for different features in the plugin. I think we can fix this
and replace the EPL images with things under Apache license, this will fix
the issue of EPL being part of src. As for RAT plugin it is added in the
pom and runs with the build.

I will cancel the Vote and fix the images and bin folder.

Thanks for the feedback

These files are under EPL. The images are binary artifacts but part of
 our
  source.

If they are only images then that should be fine in a source release.
However the EPL licence in full or a pointer to a text version should be in
LICENSE, I'm not 100% sure if anything needs to go in NOTICE or not not
 with EPL.

Do we need to release again for that ? or can I correct the src
  package(delete the folder) ?

I think the LICENCE/NOTICE issues are serious enough that the RC needs to
be redone, so you might as well remove the binaries as well for that RC. Do
you run Apache Rat on the RC before calling a vote? While it's not perfect
it will pick up issues like this.

source.

Bin folder being part of src in one of our projects(
org.apache.hdt.ui/bin/org/apache/hdt/ui), that should not have been there.
Do we need to release again for that ? or can I correct the src
package(delete the folder) ?

 I checked:

 - binary files in source release (see below)
 - all source files have correct headers

The NOTICE contains a MIT license, as far as I'm aware this isn't correct
and the information should go in LICENSE. [1.]

The more serious issue is that source release contains software licensed
under Eclipse Public License - v 1.0 (according to the NOTICE) . This is
a category B license and can only be distributed in a binary form [2]. (And
I assume only in a binary release - anyone confirm that?) I'm not 100%
where the EPL bundled software it is in the source, can anyone point that
 out?

I also would of expected the binary NOTICE / LICENSE files to be different
from the source files or do they contain exactly the same bundled software?

There's a dozen or so binary class files under
 org.apache.hdt.ui/bin/org/apache/hdt/ui.

2014-05-01 Thread Rahul Sharma
HI Suresh,

Thanks for the vote, I think we can make a few JIRAs and then target them
in the next release.

For now, I am not sure of removing the .settings, .classpath, .project. We
have kept this configuration in our repo. FWIW, this is an eclipse plugin
and a few configurations have been packed in .classpath so that it works
fine when someone imports it in eclipse. We have a JIRA against it [1], so
maybe ponder again on the same.

I found few non-blocking improvements you want to make for next release. I
debated if they need to be fixed now, but creating JIRA’s and assuring to
be fixed for next release should do.

 * The NOTICE file has Eclipse icon and SLF4J license url’s, both of them
are not needed. Please see [1] - “It is strongly recommended that the
NOTICE contains only these legally important contents.”

 * The src bundled the site, all .settings, .classpath, .project files. All
these should be removed. Its not advised to use a eclipse checkout to
 bundle the source.

 * I do not see any maven artifacts being published, is this intentional?
You can refer to [2] if this needs to be done.

HI Justin,

I think it is somewhat specific at your end. The source as such is not
platform dependent. I build it on my ubuntu and mac at it works fine. I
will try it once again. The plugin is built using maven-tycho plugin. Some
people have hit a similar issue[1][2]. But it does not look like you were
trying a concurrent build . Can you please try again after deleting your m2
at ~/.m2/repository/p2/osgi ?

We will take your feedback for NOTICE and README in our next release.

I took a look but was unable to get the source package to compile on OSX
probably an issue at my end or is it an unsupported platform?

Everything else (signatures, rat report, DISCLAIMER, LICENSE, NOTICE and
no binaries except images) all checked out fine.

One very minor issue is that the NOTICE file has the wrong year in it
(2013) but that can be fixed in the next release. Some (even minimal)
instructions on how to compile if there are any prerequisites would be
 helpful in future releases.

Thanks Sebb for explaining out in detail, since this is our first release I
think we would require some guidance. We would fix the LICENSE and the
NOTICE but there a few questions, in the same regard.

This an eclipse plugin so we are using other Eclipse libs like EMF[1].
These are based on EPL. The libs are not shipped because the eclipse
runtime environment takes care of them. Do they need a mention in the
LICENSE/NOTICE ?

Also the project is build using Tycho[2], does it require to mention the
same in LICENSE/NOTICE ?

 NOTICE says:

This product includes Eclipse Icons from
 http://tech.joelbecker.net/articles/resources/5-eclipseicons - Eclipse
 Public License v 1.0

However the LICENSE file does not include the EPL.

I think this is a blocker; any 3rd party inclusions must be
accompanied by their license, either in the LICENSE file or as a
separate file referenced from the LICENSE file. [The end user must be
able to find the licenses easily, not go searching through directory
 trees].

Without knowing the text of the EPL, it's not possible to determine
whether there also needs to be a mention in the NOTICE file (the
LICENSE may be sufficient) It's vital that the NOTICE file only has
required elements in it; unnecessary content must be removed [1]

The binary archive contains some 3rd party libraries; these need to be
mentioned in the embedded LICENSE and perhaps the NOTICE file.

I noticed SLF4J - are there any others?

 This is another blocker, IMO.

Note that the NOTICE LICENSE files must relate to the distribution
to which they belong; generally this means that the ones in the source
archive match the ones at the top-level of SCM (i.e. git here); the
binary archive may require additional entries in LICENSE and possibly
 NOTICE.

Also the word Devlopment appears in at least one NOTICE file as part
of the product name. Is that really the correct product name?

 Hi All,

I'd like to call a VOTE for acceptance of MetaModel into the Apache
 incubator.
The vote will close on June 12, 2013 at 6:00 PM (PST).

[] +1 Accept MetaModel into the Apache incubator
 [] +0 Don't care.

= MetaModel uniform data access across datastores =

 Proposal for Apache Incubator

 == Abstract ==

MetaModel is a data access framework, providing a common interface for
exploration and querying of different types of datastores.

 == Proposal ==

MetaModel provides a uniform meta-model for exploring and querying the
structure of datastores, covering but not limited to relational databases,
various data file formats, NoSQL databases, Salesforce.com, SugarCRM and
more. The scope of the project is to stay domain-agnostic, so the
meta-model will be concerned with schemas, tables, columns, rows,
 relationships etc.

On top of this meta-model a rich querying API is provided which resembles
SQL, but built using compiler-checked Java language constructs. For
datastores that do not have a native SQL-compatible query engine, the
MetaModel project also includes an abstract Java-based query engine
implementation which individual datastore-modules can adapt to fit the
 concrete datastore.

 === Background ===

The MetaModel project was initially developed by eobject.dk to service
 the
DataCleaner application (http://datacleaner.org). The main requirement
 was
to perform data querying and modification operations on a wide range of
quite different datastores. Furthermore a programmatic query model was
needed in order to allow different components to influence the query plan.

In 2009, Human Inference acquired the eobjects projects including
MetaModel. Since then MetaModel has been put to extensive use in the Human
Inference products. The open source nature of the project was reinforced,
leading to a significant growth in the community.

MetaModel has successfully been used in a number of other open source
projects as well as mission critical commercial software from Human
Inference. Currently MetaModel is hosted at http://metamodel.eobjects.org
 .

 === Rationale ===

Different types of datastores have different characteristics, which always
lead to the interfaces for these being different from one another.
Standards like JDBC and the SQL language attempt to standardize data
access, but for some datastore types like flat files, spreadsheets, NoSQL
databases and more, such standards are not even implementable.

Specialization in interfaces obviously has merit for optimized usage, but
for integration tools, batch applications and or generic data modification
tools, this myriad of specialized interfaces is a big pain. Furthermore,
being able to query every datastore with a basic set of SQL-like features
can be a great productivity boost for a wide range of applications.

 === Initial goals ===

MetaModel is already a stable project, so initial goals are more oriented
towards an adaption to the Apache ecosystem than about functional changes.

We are constantly adding more datastore types to the portfolio, but the
core modules have not had drastic changes for some time.

Our focus will be on making ties with other Apache projects (such as POI,
Gora, HBase and CouchDB) and potentially renaming the ŒMetaModel¹ project
 to something more rememberable.
This includes comply with Apache Software Foundation license for third
 party dependencies.

 == Current status ==

 === Meritocracy ===

 We intend to do everything
