It is possible to run into problems, when emerging interdependent
packages, but it is unusual and unlikely to cause real problems. It
happened to me once, during a KDE update. While kdebase was merging, I had
different versions of kdelibs and kdebase, which resulted in my being
unable to run Konqueror. I got by with Firefox and gentoo until kdebase
had merged, and always keep a spare Konqueror window open during KDE
updates now.

that's what i thought.

i'm using x11-base/xfree-4.3.0-r6

yes.

if the latest Qt requires Xorg & won't work with Xfree,
shouldn't Xorg be a dependency & listed by 'emerge -pv qt' ?

i tried Xorg last year & got nasty font problems,
so i've delayed going over to it till i'm more confident re fonts.
i haven't seen any notices "Last call! Xfree won't work anymore!"

thanx for your simple explanation as a starting-point.

Re: [gentoo-user] boot nightmare. grub grub grub....

2005-02-27 Thread William Kenworthy
You are missing some vital detail: what motherboard and disk drive (and
is it ide or sata etc.

Did you try tab completion within grub to see whats available (i.e.,
is /dev/hda really hd(0)?

One recent "funny" I have come across is the grub numbering changes
depending on what you boot from (via the bios boot select) - very
confusing. tab completion helps to map out whats really happening.

A possibly better notice then would be that Xfree is in fact no longer
even in the portage tree now :)
You shouldnt notice any font issues under Xorg really. The directories
changed around frequently when Xorg first went into portage, so that
could have helped your problem. But now everything is stable, so it
should be fine.

not investigated that however, but the documentation should
be included in the kernel. (if your kernel has kexec support
of course.)

cApTaiN_FaNtAsTiK
Yes, I have had that problem. Unfortunately, I have no idea what causes
it or what to do about it. It's irritating, but non-critical, and since
it does not seem to happen under other DM's such as KDE or other WMs
such as Openbox, I assume it's a GNOME issue.

This is supported by the workaround I use; when the logoff does not
appear in a timely manner, open gnome system monitor (which should open
promptly), then attempt to close it. When I attempt to close gnome
system monitor (without even doing anything to the processes it's
showing, though you are free to manage those if necessary), the logoff
dialog appears immediately. It almost seems like there's a stuck process
that opening/closing gnome system monitor causes to 'unstick'-- but
that process is not visible as 'stuck' in gnome system monitor (this is
how I had wound up choosing gnome system monitor in the first place; in
order to see if some zombie process was slowing down the logout process).

So that's pretty much my sum of knowledge about this issue. I'm hoping
that it will be fixed in GNOME 2.10 (whenever that becomes available);
I've noticed this in both 2.6 and 2.8, but don't really remember it in 2.4.

HTH,
Holly

mod_php *is* what you need for a web-server.
To effectively activate the module you need to add a variable like this
APACHE2_OPTS="-D PHP5"
in /etc/conf.d/apache2.

an "emerge -pv mod_php" show this:
dev-php/php-5.0.3 (-adabas) -bcmath -berkdb (-birdstep) +bzlib
-calendar -cdb (-cpdflib) +crypt +ctype +curl +curlwrappers -db2 +dba
-dbase -dbm (-dbmaker) -dbx -debug +dio (-empress) (-empress-bcs)
(-esoob) +exif +fam (-fdftk) (-filepro) -flatfile (-frontbase) +ftp +gd
-gd-external +gdbm +gmp -hyperwave-api +iconv -imap (-informix)
(-ingres) +inifile -interbase -iodbc +jpeg -kerberos +ldap -libedit
-mcve -memlimit +mhash +mime -ming -mnogosearch -msession -msql -mssql
-mysql -mysqli +ncurses -nis +nls -oci8 -odbc -oracle7 -ovrimos +pcntl
-pcre (-pfpro) +png +posix -postgres -qdbm +readline -recode -sapdb
-sasl -session -shared -sharedext -sharedmem -simplexml -snmp -soap
-sockets (-solid) -spell +spl -sqlite +ssl (-sybase) (-sybase-ct)
-sysvipc -tidy +tiff +tokenizer -truetype -wddx +xml2 -xmlrpc -xpm +xsl
+zlib

so probably you want to reemerge only mod_php with:
USE="gd -gd-external" emerge -av mod_php

GCJ actually supports standard class file compilation, and platform
native compilation, you'll need libgcj to run the native code tho. If
you want for information, just visit gnu's gcj site. It's usage is
fairly similar to gcc, and supports many gcc compiler flags.

Re: [gentoo-user] hotplug - still problems :-(

2005-02-27 Thread Heinz Sporn
Hi!

Hotplug needs to be in default since it supports hot-plugable devices in
the current runlevel. In rare circumstances you may add it to boot as
well. Coldplug in the contrary has to be at least in boot.

That's the theory. You said you had no success with it. What EXACTLY did
you mean by that? What do you expect hotplug to do?

Put hotplug into default and put coldplug into boot.
Coldplug is tying to look at things that are new at the beginning (boot)
and hotplug is looking at for things while the system is already
running (default).

Re: [gentoo-user] boot nightmare. grub grub grub....

2005-02-27 Thread Heinz Sporn
Hi!

Ol' GRUB can be a nasty little fellow. Ok let's see:

You tried to install GRUB to /dev/hda. During the installation GRUB
needs access to /boot since it puts its configuration files
into /boot/grub. Your fstab lists /dev/hda1 (where /boot resides) as
noauto. Did you really mount it before you ran setup?

An alternative way to install grub:

grub-install /dev/hda --root-directory= -- recheck

If in your scenario the mount point for /dev/hda1 is /mnt/gentoo than
the correct command would be:

grub-install /dev/hda --root-directory=/mnt/gentoo -- recheck

Think you should also check your kernel config (about hotpluging, etc.).
Using USB-2.0 flash drive with dbus/ivman and now with supermount-patch.
Have to change your fstab too.

If there are no dmesg messages when you plug the device in, it means it
isn't getting detected by the kernel, so the hotplug message isn't
getting sent.

This sounds like a problem with your USB kernel configuration (or the
USB port you're plugging into) rather than hotplug/coldplug.

Make sure that CONFIG_USB_STORAGE is set to "y" in your kernel
configuration.

I tried this on one of my audio machines. It works nicely. Seems to me
that this is almost good enough to be useful in a multiuser
environment. Would it be possibly to do something like this:

1) Alt-Ctrl-Del takes you to a gdm login screen

2) You enter your name and password. The system figures out what
display to give you and starts your X session.

3) Alt-Ctrl-F1-6 still take you to consoles from any user account.

4) If you are in any console or in any display other than your own and
you hit Alt-Ctrl-F6-8 then the system requires you to give a password
appropriate for the user account that has that display.

5) No user can shutdown or reboot unless there are no other users logged in.

I don't know if all of that is possible, but it would be cool if it

well its possible its done its thing and that grub is in fact installed
- try rebooting to see (assuming you have set up a menu file)

or you could try re-emerging grub - maybe some dependent library has
changed since you compiled it?

Then again grub is not actually linked to much:

ldd /sbin/grub
libncurses.so.5 => /lib/libncurses.so.5 (0x40023000)
libc.so.6 => /lib/libc.so.6 (0x4007)
/lib/ld-linux.so.2 => /lib/ld-linux.so.2 (0x4000)

Re: [gentoo-user] eclipse is broken

I had something similar at one point.  I'm not sure what sequence of actions produced this, but I had the following:

java-config reported sun-jdk-1.4.2_06 as my JVM, but it was not updated in the environment.
eclipse would bomb with JVM errors.

I fixed this by running java-config as root, and re-setting the Sun JDK as the system JVM.  Then I ran "env-update" as root.

As my normal user, I ran "source /etc/profile" to pick up the updated environment.  After that, Eclipse ran fine.

Good luck,

[gentoo-user] Installing Oracle 9iR2

Hi,

I am trying to install Oracle 9i Release2. I had to change the java-binary
and replace it with a link to the blackdown jdk because of LIBC
incompatibilities. Now when I start runInstaller a window opens after
the splash screen, I have a whole lot of java processes of which
(according to top) none is doing anything, and the window stays grey
(remotelogin via ssh).

Did anybody install this and have success?

I remember trying to figure this one out as well. What you do is edit
/etc/postfix/main.cf and add a line like this:

relayhost = [your.isps.smtp.server]

In the same file also add these lines:

smtp_sasl_auth_enable = yes
smtp_sasl_security_options = noanonymous
smtp_sasl_password_maps = hash:/etc/postfix/saslpass

Then edit/create the file /etc/postfix/saslpass and add this line:

your.isps.smtp.server username:password

Issue the command:
# postmap /etc/postfix/saslpass

Unless you want everyone on the system to have access to your password,
execute this as well:
# chmod 600 /etc/postfix/saslpass

Finally, you want to restart postfix to enable the change.
# /etc/init.d/postfix restart

I wrote this from memory and using grep on the files in /etc/postfix so
if I left something out I apologize!

I can't say anything about opera or epiphany but I install the flash
plugin manually from the macromedia website. It's a straight forward
installation. All you really have to do is provide the path
/usr/lib/nsbrowser/plugins to the install script. This works for mozilla
and firefox. If you can locate the plugins directory for opera it should
be as easy. Good luck!

Well, it doesn't work! If I put anything but this in Xservers it locks
up after booting. I put /etc/X11/xdm/xdm-config back to original.

:0 local /usr/X11R6/bin/X :0 vt7
If I add another line with :1 ... :1 vt8 it hangs.
What's strange is if I add the extra line and then restart X
(ctl-alt-bspc) it works - just doesn't on boot.

Looking through info on the web and the forums I should be able to do
this. However, on the forums I see lines like

:0 local reserve /usr/X11R6/bin/X :0 vt7
but unfortunately, most of the posts are trying to make this work on KDE
or Gnome. Do they use a diffrent syntax? Nothing on the web or man pages
indicates anything about reserve.

Any suggestions?

I've already googled for it, found dozens of places, and now I am very
confused.

I remember trying to figure this one out as well. What you do is edit
/etc/postfix/main.cf and add a line like this:
relayhost = [your.isps.smtp.server]
In the same file also add these lines:
smtp_sasl_auth_enable = yes
smtp_sasl_security_options = noanonymous
smtp_sasl_password_maps = hash:/etc/postfix/saslpass
Then edit/create the file /etc/postfix/saslpass and add this line:
your.isps.smtp.server username:password
Issue the command:
   # postmap /etc/postfix/saslpass
Unless you want everyone on the system to have access to your password,
execute this as well:
   # chmod 600 /etc/postfix/saslpass
Finally, you want to restart postfix to enable the change.
   # /etc/init.d/postfix restart
I wrote this from memory and using grep on the files in /etc/postfix so
if I left something out I apologize!

[gentoo-user] OT - uw-imap question

2005-02-27 Thread Michael Sullivan
I am attempting to set up uw-imap on my server box
(bullet.espersunited.com). I emerged it, went into
/etc/xinetd.d and modified the imap and pop3 files so
that they looked more like their counterparts from my
FC1 install the was previously on the box. I
restarted xinetd. I opened up evolution and set up
the [EMAIL PROTECTED] account. It would not
let me log onto the IMAP server with my username and
password, yet I can ssh over there successfully with
the same username and password. I cannot telnet to
port 143 of the server box, nor to port 110. Is there
further setup required?

1st thing to check, is your user in group wheel? login as root, then
cat /etc/group | grep wheel

if your user isn't in wheel, gpasswd -a user wheel.

Two things:

1) Drop uw-imap like a hot potato and run dovecot or courier-imap instead
(you'll thank me later). Dovecot can use mbox format, courier uses Maildir.
UW-imap is not only slow, but is widely regarded as one of the worse imap
servers out there, if I'm allowed to be just blunt.

2) In such cases, running 'netstat -an' can be helpful in determining what's
[not] listening to the network on your box.

Everybody so far is talking about USE flags, but to me this looks like
(given the very limited info), a mask issue.

What I would like to know is what is the exact message when gtk + is
reported as not available. Is it blocked? Masked? If masked, what kind
of mask (the emerge output will say).

I rather think that dvdrip may well need some ~arch dependencies (if it
is not ~arch itself), and said dependencies are masked for whatever reason.

But more complete information would really help, most notably exact output.

[gentoo-user] GRUB on JFS root partition won't boot

2005-02-27 Thread Dave V

Hello All,

I just put together a fresh Gentoo System on my laptop. This is the 5th-6th
(starting to lose count) system that I've set up from stage1 and I think I've
finally got it all down. I decided to try JFS instead of ext3 and all is fine
except that I can't boot with GRUB.

I get
# GRUB Loading stage1.5.
#
#
# GRUB loading, please wait...
and then it goes out to lunch.

I can still get into the system by using a KANOTIX live-cd (knoppix derivative)
that uses grub. Then manually boot with "kernel (hd0,0)/boot/kernel-2.6.10
vga=791" and the system is doing rather well. So.. things work if I use grub
exterally, but not from the MBR. I'd really like to avoid making an ext2/3
partition to house grub if I can. Any ideas?

[gentoo-user] Dialin with mgetty via GSM

2005-02-27 Thread Robert G. Siebeck
Hi,

I'm trying to dial into my Gentoo-box. As a modem I use my Siemens
mobile phone and I want mgetty to answer the call. The Gentoo-box is
configured as follows:

/etc/inittab

s0:12345:respawn:/usr/sbin/mgetty ircomm0 vt100

/etc/mgetty+sendfax/mgetty.config

port ircomm0
  debug 8
  modem-type data
  init-chat RING
  toggle-dtr n

/etc/mgetty+sendfax/login.config

*   -   -   /bin/login @

I'm using a Windows box with an ISDN-card and Hyperterminal to dial.
The mobile answers the call and after some seconds I see random
characters in Hyperterminal. Between them I shortly could see the name
of my Gentoo-machine. Actually no login is possible.

[gentoo-user] Getting SCSI devices before USB devices

2005-02-27 Thread Justin Patrin
I have a SCSI card set up with 2 drives in a raid array.

I also have various USB devices (a UDB HDD, a USB CF / SD card reader).

My raidtab has /dev/sda and /dev/sdb as the SCSI devices since this is
what they normally come up as.

However, if I have the USB card reader plugged in on boot (for
instance) it gets /dev/sda and my SCSI drives get /dev/sdb and
/dev/sdc, causing RAID startup to fail and kicking me out to a
maintenance prompt. This makes rebooting while I'm not at the console
bring my machine basically down until I can get back to it. This is
very annoying, even when I am at the console.

How can I specify that my SCSI drives get recognized first? Or, how
can I force them to be sda and sdb?

I may be wrong, but I don't think it is. From the doc
http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/handbook/handbook-amd64.xml?part=1&chap=10
:

# emerge grub

All the same, I've "fixed" it. Because of networking issues with
installing from the gentoo CD, I was installing from something called
KANOTIX-64. As soon as I booted from the gentoo CD and chrooted into
my system. Installing grub worked just fine and I can now boot my
system.

Compile usb-storage as a module. then the USB drives won't be recognised

What commands are you using and what is the output?

Was that really necessary? I don't see how flaming someone for participating
is going to help anything. The next time you want to send a mean spirited

[gentoo-user] djbdns and Gentoo

2005-02-27 Thread Grant
I'm setting up DNS services for my domains on my server. I'm looking
at http://www.lifewithdjbdns.com/ but I wonder how much of the "Simple
setup" applies with Gentoo. Does anyone have any advice on djbdns
with Gentoo?

Install it, and follow the instructions the ebuild gives you.

I'd also suggest you install supervise-scripts, 'svc-restart blah' is so much
easier than 'svc -d /service/blah;svc -u /service/blah' :)
