If so, please reach out to me directly and I'm happy to organize a chat.

[gep-ed] Advice on Graduate School?

2024-02-20 Thread Maniates, Michael Fields
Dear Colleagues,

A big ask follows. If you have even a sliver of insight into one or more of
these programmes, I'd greatly appreciate hearing from you. Please email me
privately.

Long story short: I have an especially promising undergraduate in
environmental studies/governance who has a scholarship for a masters degree
programme of his choosing. He's narrowed his options down to the three below,
with explanations. None of these programmes are known personally to me. If
you have any recommendations among the three ('which programme would you
recommend to your student?'), or know anything about them that could help my
student make an appropriate selection, I'd love to hear from you.

Time is short. He needs to decide next week.

Gratefully yours,
Michael

~
Dear Professor Maniates,

Thank you so much for offering your assistance with my graduate school
applications a couple of weeks back. Apologies for taking a while to get back
to you as work took over a little.
Here are the list of programmes I'm considering, and some descriptions of what
I want to learn in graduate school:

Overall, I feel like what I want to get out of graduate school is a
specialization of what I've learnt in YNC. I think that specialization for me
now is in urban governance - learning how to lead sustainability
transformations specifically within urban environments like Singapore. This can
manifest in engendering transport policy change, or influencing housing
policies, or pushing for urban agriculture. I'd like to focus on programmes
that focus on urban sustainability governance, and understanding how
transformative change can really be pushed forward, with the city at its core.
Below are some programmes that I believe will help me along these goals.

  1. MSc Urban Management and Development (Urban Environment, Sustainability &
Climate Change Track) - Erasmus University
Rotterdam

  * Learning to lead urban transformations towards climate-neutral cities,
with a focus on both climate mitigation and resilience building
  * Core compulsory modules of 'Urban Complexity', 'Urban Governance &
Finance' and so on provide a focusing angle into urban governance through
different perspectives
  * Professors in this programme include Dr Paul Rabe (studies the
land-water-human nexus), Dr Alberto Gianoli (studies urban governance from the
perspective of finance, and data science), and Dr Qian Ke (flood risk
management and water resources)
  * Being based in Rotterdam - I consider the Netherlands a deep inspiration
for sustainable urban practices (with the cycling culture, availability of
plant based meals etc.) that would be both a personal and professional
motivator while I continue into graduate school and sharpen my focus in making
these changes possible within Singapore, and possibly beyond

  1. MSc in Sustainable Cities - University of
Leeds

  * Similar to the Rotterdam programme, this one focuses on the intersection
of urbanism and sustainability, to learn how to lead urban sustainability
transitions
  * Their core modules focus on specific aspects of urban scholarship, such
as mobility, sustainable housing, energy etc., taught one at a time, which
allows for sequential immersion into these specific sectors
  * Working with professors such as Prof Paul Chatterton (scholarship and
work on social housing projects & promoting cycling & walking), Prof Milena
Buchs (policies and transitions towards post-growth societies), and Dr Caroline
Mullen (green transitions in mobility & transport, as well as mobility
governance)

  1. Master Governance of Sustainability Transformations - Wageningen
University

  * A bigger picture programme that looks at governance more generally, and
focuses on the design and possibility of novel governance arrangements
  * Strong intersection of life science and governance studies, given that
WUR is such a strong life and agri-science research university
  * Overall, I feel like studying governance at the place at the forefront of
technological research into science-based solutions will bear fruitful
intersections

Dear Michael,

I am writing in hopes that you might be willing to pass along information about
a climate (and/or inequalities) focused political theory position at the
University of Utah with the ESS listserv. It has an upcoming priority deadline
of September 24 and we are trying to broaden awareness of the position.

Additional information about the position: The Department of Political Science
at the University of Utah invites applications for a tenure-track faculty
position in Political Theory at the rank of Assistant Professor beginning July
1, 2024. We seek a political theorist whose scholarship and teaching addresses
the theme of Ecologies and Inequalities. In the context of today’s urgent
environmental, social, political, cultural, and economic crises, we are looking
for a talented scholar and teacher whose research takes an existential approach
to contemporary conditions. We are especially interested in scholars whose
research addresses climate change in relation to social stratifications,
including race, class, post-coloniality, and disability. The successful
candidate will carry a 2/2 teaching load and will be expected to teach
foundational courses in Political Theory as well as courses related to
Ecologies and Inequalities that align with their interests.

Dear GEP-ed/ESS Colleagues: Passing on information about a variety of
potentially useful 1-hour long introductory workshops organized by
instats.org. Even though these are not specifically focused
on GEP, these may be of broad interest to even those who don't do quantitative
analysis. On the other hand, for those interested in a deep dive, they are also
offering a day-long workshop on a relatively new approach of Necessary
Condition Analysis (NCA) -- Please see the information below.
My best wishes,

valuable list is permissible : )

Free 1-hour introductions to SPSS, Stata, Mplus, and R
Instats is pleased to announce four new livestreaming 1-hour introductions to
SPSS, Stata, Mplus, and R. Registration is entirely free, and each workshop is
designed to provide participants with a hands-on overview of the software
interfaces, importing and managing data, descriptive statistics, and
inferential statistics including univariate methods (regression/ANOVA) as well
as multivariate methods (factor analysis/path analysis/SEM). Basic plotting
methods will be described along with special features such as bootstrapping and
Bayesian analysis where applicable. To register for free, you can use the

TITLE: Free 1-day seminar on Necessary Condition Analysis (NCA)

For your research, if you've ever wanted to understand and model causal effects
in a rigorous way that reflects the complexity of the real-world, Instats is
offering a free 1-day workshop: Introduction to Necessary Condition Analysis
(NCA)
running May 10 -- spaces are limited, so sign up soon! NCA understands a cause
as a necessary (but not sufficient) condition, rather than a probabilistic
cause (as in regression analysis). “Necessary” means that a certain outcome
will not occur without a certain level of the condition. This is independent of
the rest of the causal structure. NCA is rapidly entering a variety of research
fields and can be used as a stand-alone method or in combination with other
methods (e.g., regression analysis, structural equation modeling, qualitative
comparative analysis).

This free 1-day seminar is being taught by Jan Dul, who invented NCA and
co-authored the R package for NCA. Registration is entirely free! This seminar
is perfect if, like many of us, you've wanted a way to go beyond simplistic
ANOVA or regression-based approaches to causal effect estimation. The seminar
will introduce you to NCA and then show you how to conduct analyses and make
causal inferences through a series of worked examples. To register for free,
use the following link -- and please feel free to tell your colleagues and
friends/students!

2023-03-07 Thread Maniates, Michael Fields
Hello All,

Does anyone out there have any insights into the newly formed Glasgow Financial
Alliance for Net Zero? Website = https://www.gfanzero.com/ They've opened a
new office here in Singapore in June 2022 and I'm trying to get a read on them,
on behalf of colleagues a handful of students here in Singapore.

Perhaps it's best to reply off-list. I'll post a summary of anything
non-confidential that I receive.

Gratefully yours,
Michael Maniates

Dear all,

I am looking for case studies for some research I am engaged in and I was
wondering if any of you can point me in the right direction.

The particular phenomenon I am interested in is cases in which a community has
a right to be consulted (for example, in relation to a new development on their
land). The developer/state conducts consultation with some individual members
of the community who don't have any special authority to speak for the whole
group. The developer/state then treats these individuals as speaking for the
whole group. Importantly, I am looking for cases in which the individual
community members do not claim to have any representative authority and would
not see themselves as speaking for the group.

Is anybody aware of any research or case studies that address this particular
scenario?

Thank you!

Dina

[gep-ed] FW: special issue

2020-09-19 Thread Maniates, Michael Fields
Dear gep-ed colleagues,

I’m forwarding the announcement below at the request of Prof. Bastiaens.
Please direct queries to her.

Best,
Michael Maniates

Dear Michael,

I am writing to ask if I could post a call for a special issue on the
environment and welfare on your google group and/or mailing list. The
information is below.

Thank you,

Ida

Dear Colleagues,

I wish to advertise a call for submissions to a new Special Issue on the
environment and welfare in the journal Sustainability. Please see
here
 for more information.

This Special Issue will focus on examining how environmental changes influence
the distribution of welfare in societies in countries beyond the OECD. This is
particularly salient in our world today where local environmental conditions
and policies have increasingly impactful welfare ramifications at home and
abroad. Typically, the poorest and most vulnerable among us in developing
countries are most affected by environmental changes and, consequently, have to
bear the social consequences. Both environmental changes and welfare are
broadly defined for this Special Issue. For example, environmental changes may
encompass climate change, environmental degradation, environmental
externalities of economic activity of multinational corporations, and
environmental policies, whereas welfare may include topics such as income
inequality, poverty, public goods and services, and social mobility or
opportunities. This Special Issue seeks to explore interconnections across such
phenomena. We encourage submissions to explore both domestic and international
sources of environmental change and policy.

The following are examples of topics of interest for this Special Issue:

  * Effect of pollution and other environmental externalities of globalized
production and trade on welfare distributions in host nations
  * Impact of global environmental policies and practices, such as in
treaties, on welfare conditions in signatories
  * Role of climate change on human development and welfare in developing
countries

This Special Issue aims to contribute to a more systematic understanding of the
influence of environmental changes on the distribution of welfare in societies
typically belonging to the marginalized regions of the world.

We look forward to your contributions.

[gep-ed] Thanks! + list norms

2020-09-05 Thread Maniates, Michael Fields
Hello All,

The recent Tragedy-of-the-Commons dialogue initiated by Ron Mitchell has been
wonderful to watch unfold. Many thanks to all of you who have contributed, and
to those who've launched branched conversations.

As we proceed with these and other discussions, please recall the norms of this
listserv, which spring from a recognition that most of us already receive way
too much email. Operationally, that means at least two things for us:

(i) when members specifically ask for ideas or feedback on a
question or topic, we send replies to that member alone, who then compiles
these replies and posts a summary to the list

(ii)we balance our desire to publically thank a member for
their contribution to the list against the knowledge that what makes gep-ed so
valuable is its parsimony, suggesting that notes of appreciation and thanks are
often best sent to the member alone

I don't mean for this reminder to have a chilling effect; reach out to me
privately, please, if you experience my comments in that way.

I'm happy to field queries, sent privately to me, about our shared norms on
gep-ed.

Hoping this finds you well,
Michael

[gep-ed] TT position - Env. Social Scientist - Yale-NUS College

2020-08-24 Thread Maniates, Michael Fields
*Apologies for Cross-Posting*

Dear Colleagues,

We have a TT faculty position open at Yale-NUS College (an undergraduate,
liberal arts college) in our dynamic programme in environmental studies.
We're casting a wide net - anyone who understands themselves as an
'environmental social scientist,' with teaching interests congruent with the
liberal-arts experiment, should consider applying. While we have a preference
for candidates who will bring quantitative analysis to the classroom, my
understanding is that this isn't a deal-breaking requirement for the right
candidate.

The announcement is available at this link
(https://academicjobsonline.org/ajo/jobs/16694) and reprinted below. Questions
should be directed to Professor McAdoo at the email address noted in the
advert. I'm also happy to field informal inquiries about the college, life in
Singapore, the caliber of our students (fantastic!), and the like.

We being reviewing applications on 21 September 2020.

With every best wish,
Michael

Hello all,

As a follow-up to everyone, here’s some additional information and a request:

1. Google groups, which hosts our listserv, has been ‘updated’ and
‘improved’ by Google. This occurred in just the last few days.

2. Access to all posts to the lists (including attachments) is set to
“anyone who has a link.” That link is https://groups.google.com/g/gep-ed and
can be found via a quick websearch of “ged-ed list” or something similar.

3. I’d ask Paul to try accessing the list archives again, and to send
just to me a screenshot of the request that he log into google to access this
information – as this should not be happening, at least not according to what I
can see on my end.

4. If others are experiencing the same difficulty, please email me
privately. That will help me ascertain if this is a challenge specific to
Paul, or if we’re looking at a general bug associated with the Google Groups
update.

5. If it is the latter, I will pursue this issue with Google, though they
are notoriously opaque on these matters.

I’ll keep you all posted.

Yours,
Michael

[gep-ed] Capitalism and Climate reading for first-year, first-semester undergrads?

2020-08-03 Thread Maniates, Michael Fields
Dear gep-ed'ers,

A quick request, if you don't mind.

I'm on the hunt for a tight reading, accessible to first-semester, first-year
college undergraduates, that wrestles with "capitalism and the climate crisis."
I've found lots of material that argues for the power of innovation, fueled by
the quest for profits in environments where prices tell the truth (more or
less). Certain varieties of capitalism/markets = good, in other words. And
I've laid my hands on some scathing critiques of capitalism that argue for
forms of eco-socialism to save the planet. Capitalism in all forms is the
problem, in other words. Most of these, however, are too polemical for my
purposes. I'm looking for something that unpacks both arguments (and others)
and, in the process, comes to its own conclusions.

Too much to ask for in tight, accessible form? Maybe. But if anything
immediately comes to mind, shoot me a note. Per our gep-ed practices, send
ideas only to me, and I'll share what I gather in a summary email.

A final note on context: I'd be using the essay for discussion in a small
seminars after a week of exploring "the market" as an overarching social
institution. The entire freshman class is enrolled, and they'd be parsing the
essay in groups of 15 - 18, led by an instructor in the social sciences.

Many thanks, and best wishes to you all during these difficult times.

Yours,
Michael

Subject: [AESS_LIST] Tenure-track Environmental Studies Position at North
Central College, IL

Dear All,

We are looking for a new tenure-track faculty member in environmental studies
at North Central College, Naperville, IL. The job posting
(https://northcentralcollege.peopleadmin.com/postings/6778) is pasted below.

Thanks!

Chandreyee

The Environmental Studies Interdisciplinary Program at North Central College
invites applications for a tenure-track position in Environmental Studies
beginning August 1, 2020. We are particularly interested in applicants in the
fields of environmental policy, environmental law, environmental justice,
and/or geography. The successful candidate will teach our interdisciplinary
core spanning all levels of students including People and Nature, U.S.
Environmental Issues, and Environmental Problem Solving. Candidates will also
have the opportunity to develop courses in their own field of expertise and to
contribute to an interdisciplinary general education program. Candidates who
can help advance the College’s community-engaged learning and experiential,
inquiry-based learning initiatives are encouraged to apply.

A Ph.D. in environmental studies or a related field is required; ABDs within
one year of degree completion will be considered. Applicants with postdoc
experience and/or experience being the instructor of record in undergraduate
courses are especially encouraged to apply. The candidate must demonstrate a
potential for excellence in undergraduate teaching and mentoring, as well as a
commitment to scholarship that ideally includes collaboration with
undergraduates.

Founded in 1861, North Central College is a selective, comprehensive liberal
arts institution of about 3000 students, located 28 miles west of Chicago in
Naperville. The College is in a period of growth with the addition of a $60
million Science Center that opened in March 2017. The College is within walking
distance of the Naperville Metra station and is next to downtown Naperville.
The Naperville area is home to many excellent school districts and Naperville,
IL has been ranked as one of the best places to live by Money magazine.

For more information, please visit: http://www.noctrl.edu or email Dr.
Chandreyee Mitra, Coordinator of the Environmental Studies Program, at
cmi...@noctrl.edu.

Interested candidates should submit a cover letter, curriculum vitae, statement
of teaching philosophy, statement of research interests and plans, unofficial
transcript, and three letters of recommendation in an electronic format.

North Central College values diversity and is committed to social justice,
equity and inclusiveness. Experience working with diverse student populations
and communities will be weighed in the candidate’s favor.

Review of applications will begin October 1, 2019, and continue until the
position is filled.

North Central College is an Equal Opportunity Employer committed to increasing
the diversity of our workforce. NCC provides reasonable accommodation to
applicants with disabilities where appropriate. If you need reasonable
accommodation for any part of the application or hiring process, please notify
the Office of Human Resources. Determinations for reasonable accommodation will
be made on a case-by-case basis.

Subject: Vacancy Assistant Professor Environmental Governance

Dear colleagues,

I would like to draw your attention to a vacancy for an Assistant Professor in
Environmental Governance at the Netherlands Open University.

The faculty of Management, Science & Technology at the Open University of the
Netherlands (OUNL) is looking for an Assistant professor Environmental
Governance (F/M, 0,8 fte) for 4 years, with the possibility of a permanent
contract afterwards. The successful candidate will become part of the
Department of Science, a small but ambitious group focused on sustainability
challenges. The group wants to contribute to the resolution of societal
problems through excellent research and teaching programs. The educational
programs of the Department have been evaluated as the best in the Netherlands
for years. The Department has similarly high ambitions in the realm of
research, as witnessed by its very active participation in the OUNL Research
programs on "Resilience, Learning and Innovation" and "Safety and the City". We
are looking for enthusiastic applicants who will help us enhance the profile of
the OUNL, and who have the qualities to contribute new energy and ideas to our
teaching and research lines.

The assistant professor will play an important role in both the teaching and
research programs of the OUNL. The research of the Department specifically is
aimed at developing a better understanding of the origins of policy
innovations, their pathways of diffusion, and their actual impacts in terms of
sustainability. The candidate we seek has proven research skills in the field
of environmental governance and has an active interest in the theme of (policy)
innovation, that is, new modes of governance, new goals, and new instruments.
The Department hosts both a B.Sc. and a M.Sc.- program in Environmental
Sciences (online education) and the assistant professor will be responsible for
several courses, and is to provide additional teaching inputs where needed
(thesis supervision, new courses, certified professional programs).

The deadline for applications is September the 1st. Full details can be found
here
https://www.academictransfer.com/nl/284711/assistant-professor-in-environmental-governance/

Please feel free to forward this e-mail to candidates who you feel might be
interested!

Bets regards

[gep-ed] Clarification

2019-07-09 Thread Maniates, Michael Fields
Dear Friends and Colleagues,

Enough of you have asked about my email of yesterday, in which I issued an
apology on behalf of a colleague and announced a temporary change in listserv
mechanics, to prompt this brief note of clarification.

The violation of list norms that triggered my action was the decision by one
valued colleague to share, on an international listserv with a publically
accessible archive, a sensitive private email from another valued colleague
without permission. That's the red line.

Some of you have attempted to post thoughtful responses to this kerfuffle with
that private email included in the thread. I've held those posts back until
they can be edited to exclude the private email.

With best wishes,
MIchael

[gep-ed] Apologies to all. Now in Moderated mode

2019-07-09 Thread Maniates, Michael Fields
Hello All,

On behalf of Professor Harris, I apologize for the sharing of an email that was
clearly meant to be private. This is the first time I’ve felt the need to
apologize to the list in the 25+ years I’ve been lurking as the administrator.
Settings on gep-ed are configured to make it difficult to inadvertently send a
private message to all of gep-ed, but at the end of the day nothing, it seems,
is foolproof. I am sorry for whatever technical snafu and/or lapse in
judgement led to a breach in one of the core tenets of gep-ed: we can
publically disagree, sharply and stubbornly at times, but always with a
heightened degree of professionalism. Save the other stuff for private
communications, or for emails written for personal satisfaction but never sent.

Another first for the list: I’ll be moderating posts for a spell, until things
quiet down. Expect, then, some delay in the posting of any messages to gep-ed.
And do remember that, when posting, one doesn’t typically receive a copy of
the sent message. Check the list archive to confirm delivery of your message
to the ~ 700 of us. Get the URL for the archive by googling “gep-ed”.

You’ll hear from me again when I return the list to open-access, unmoderated
mode – soon, I expect.

Yours,
Michael

This initiative is part of the Inside the Greenhouse project at CU-Boulder.
This project acknowledges that, to varying degrees, we are all implicated in,
part of, and responsible for greenhouse gas emissions into the atmosphere. We
treat this ‘greenhouse’ as a living laboratory, an intentional place for
growing new ideas and evaluating possibilities to confront climate change
through a range of mitigation and adaptation strategies. Award winners must

Hello:

Hello,

*Apologies for multiple postings as we work to get the word out*

We would like to contributions of research letter articles to an upcoming focus
collection of Environmental Research Letters (erl.iop.org) entitled:

“The Social-Ecological Future of the American West”

As the pace and scale of global change continue to increase, large landscape
conservation and stakeholder collaboration have been identified as key
strategies for preserving ecosystem structure, function, and services as well
as achieving sustainable use of common pool resources. Few places in the world
exemplify the needs and challenges of managing trade-offs in large landscapes
better than the American West. Home to some of the most iconic landscapes and
wildlife in North America, the American West is facing growing pressures from
development, food production, and climate change. Furthermore, the dominance of
federal land ownership across the region, combined with the interspersion of
private lands owned by legacy ranchers, multi-millionaires, and amenity
migrants, sets the stage for complex common pool resource problems that are
likely to be exacerbated as aridity increases across the region.
Transdisciplinary scholarship is crucial to disentangle key social-ecological
interactions and feedbacks affecting environmental sustainability in the
American West and inform the development of effective governance and management
strategies.

The papers in this focus collection will synthesize existing knowledge,
highlight important gaps, and chart a path for future inquiry on
social-ecological sustainability in the American West. Contributions are
invited from social, ecological, and physical scientists, as well as humanities
scholars, that focus on an integrated set of topics.

Further details, as well as the full scope and aims of the collection are
available at:

http://iopscience.iop.org/journal/1748-9326/page/Social-Ecological-American-West

For more information about general journal scope and submission requirements
(including the recommended upper limit of 4000 words for research letter
articles) please visit:

http://iopscience.iop.org/journal/1748-9326/page/Scope

Deadline for responses

If you are interested in contributing, we ask that you submit abstract on a
specific topic to be assessed by the Guest Editors. Abstracts should be no more
than 200 words and demonstrate why the manuscript will be a good fit for the
focus collection. The deadline for submitting an abstract is 18 January 2019.
Please email the abstract directly to Dr Neil Carter
(neilcar...@boisestate.edu).

Deadline for submissions

The nominal date for submission of full manuscripts is until 17 May 2019 and
submissions earlier in this period are encouraged. ERL publishes focus
collections incrementally, with accepted articles published as soon as the peer
review process is concluded, avoiding any delay to the publication of
individual contributions. All articles will be collected together on the
dedicated webpage above with contributions added on an on-going basis.

Due to ERL’s broad scope and open access model, this collection will be
targeted at a diverse audience of Earth & environmental scientists,
practitioners, policy makers, and non-specialist readers. This, as well as
additional coverage via our social media channels or via our sister community
channel; Environment and Energy at Physics World, means published ERL articles
have outstandingly high visibility and impact – each article receives on
average over 1,600 downloads within 6 months of publication and the latest ISI

So you've landed a teaching job.
You beat out dozens (if not hundreds) of applicants and now you must prepare to
teach your first course.
In this recent post, Dr. Ramon Goings suggests a few ideas on how to prepare,
and also highlights several perspectives of colleagues in the field.

Be forewarned. There is minutia.
Teaching isn't just about the actual instruction of your students—you will
probably need a contact in IT.

If you're faculty of color, call on your colleagues.
There is a litany of research that explains the prevalence of negative

Use the existing playbook.
Lean on previous syllabi for the course or program to get you started. There's

studies, environmental policy, or a related interdisciplinary environmental
field as well as a strong commitment to undergraduate education. Postdoctoral
experience preferred. The teaching load is 4.5 courses, including an
intermediate-level survey of international environmental policy, upper-level

Good evening from Europe everyone,

Sorry to intrude upon your inboxes again, but we have a special issue of
Energy Research & Social Science that was published this week, focusing on “Energy and the Future.â€ Congratulations (and thanks) to both Laurence Delina and Anthony Janetos from Boston University for the massive amount of effort taken to guest edit it.
Below you can see the table of contents and as always, happy to share individual articles by request.

Introduction
Laurence Delina, Anthony Janetos, Cosmopolitan, dynamic, and contested energy futures: Navigating the pluralities and polarities in the energy systems of tomorrow, Energy Research & Social Science, Volume 35, 2018, Pages 1-10, ISSN 2214-6296,
https://doi.org/10.1016/j.erss.2017.11.031.
Abstract: The futures of energy are cosmopolitan, dynamic, and full of contradictions. There are multiple actors and institutions with multiple aims and interests advancing the futures of energy; at the same time, these futures are envisioned
differently and will, therefore, be produced and negotiated heterogeneously. This context highlights that energy futures are not free of cultural, political, and economic influence, and hence can be best-approached with cosmopolitan and plural lenses. This
collection evidences plurality in terms of the disparate geographic locations, disciplinary foundations, conceptual frameworks, and methodological choices of our authors and their papers. This breadth points to the many roads of imagining the sociotechnicality
of energy futures and of making these expectations real and durable. We suggest embracing plurality and reflexivity, and understanding the politics of energy futures, at the same time that we also issue a caveat on the complexity of these processes. Claiming
no comprehensiveness or closure, our collective contributions should be taken as works-in-progress in the unending quest to understand, analyze, and critique the plurality of the futures of energy and the ways we imagine, navigate, and contest them.
Keywords: Futures; Energy transitions; Uncertainty

Sheila Jasanoff, Just transitions: A humble approach to global energy futures, Energy Research & Social Science, Volume 35, 2018, Pages 11-14, ISSN 2214-6296,

Abstract: Persistent mismatches between problems, policy framings, and solutions point to unsettled ethical conundrums in the ways that the energy transition is being imagined at the centers of global power. First, development is too often
seen as the means to achieve more sustainable futures, even though experience points to complex and uncertain relationships between prosperity and sustainability. Second, while technological change is seen as essential to the transition, less attention is
paid to the fact that disparities within societies demand differentiated solutions. Third, there are few principles in place for how to effect an energy transition with due attention to social justice in an unequal world. This article reflects on all three
 points.
Keywords: Energy transition; Social justice; Climate change; Technologies of humility
The global South and their energy futures

Abstract: This short essay quantifies the level of Chinese overseas development finance in the global energy sector, denotes the financing model deployed by the Chinese in these transactions, and evaluates China’s potential for financing
a transition toward a clean energy future. We find that China’s two development banks – the China Development Bank and the Export-Import Bank of China provide more development finance than the World Bank and its counterparts, and have a more flexible business
model for financing cleaner energy. That said, the current mix of Chinese energy finance is in carbon intensive projects.

Subject: [SCORAI] Trouble with theory? A critical meta-survey of theories/concepts for technological change

Good morning all,

I have an email meant primarily for students.  I recall having to choose my conceptual framework/theory for my own PhD and how stumped I was. In an attempt to generate a usable guidebook for students, David Hess
and I have written a moderately long theoretical survey. Rather than share the full thing (47 pages in the journal plus
an appendix with 19 further pages of data), below is the press release. Below that, for those who dare to rise to the challenge, is a link to the study, which is fully open access.

With hopes some of you will find it useful,

Benjamin (and David)

http://www.sussex.ac.uk/spru/newsandevents/2017/findings/technologicalchange

How to think about technological change

Researchers publish toolkit of theories or concepts most useful at explaining socio-technical diffusion and transitions

We live in a world where the design of technological systems increasingly affects our basic institutions such as education, the media, government, and business. Whether we are thinking
about new information or biomedical technologies, rebuilding a region after a natural disaster, or averting climate change, how we think about technological change matters.

Researchers at the University of Sussex in the United Kingdom and Vanderbilt University in the United States
have released a toolkit of theories or concepts most useful at explaining socio-technical diffusion and transitions. This involves a catalogue of 96 distinct theories and conceptual approaches spanning 22 disciplines.  Fourteen of these theories were mentioned
with consistent frequency across the sample of experts interviewed for the study. These are:

1.
Sociotechnical Transitions / the Multi-Level Perspective

2.
Social Practice Theory / Theories of Practice

3.
Discourse Theory

4.
Domestication Theory

5.
Large Technical Systems

6.
Social Construction of Technology

7.
Sociotechnical Imaginaries

8.
Actor-Network Theory

9.
Social Justice Theory

10.
Sociology of Expectation

11.
Sustainable Development

12.
Values Beliefs Norms Theory

13.
Lifestyle Theory

14.
The Unified Theory of Acceptance and Use of Technology

The study – â€œOrdering theories: Typologies and conceptual frameworks for sociotechnical
changeâ€ - places such diverse theories into five general categories of being centered on agency, structure, meaning, relations or norms. They can also be classified based on their assumptions and goals rooted in functionalism, interpretivism, humanism
 or conflict.

Professor Benjamin Sovacool, lead author of the study and Director of the Center
on Innovation and Energy Demand, which examines energy innovation and transitions, said he found the results “surprising.â€  As he notes:

“I never expected that surveying a mere 35 social science experts would result in almost 100 theories, 14 of them discussed with some frequency. It suggests that the conceptual
power of the academy is diverse but also fragmented—analysts and researchers have an abundance of tools available to them, each with their own assumptions and history.â€

The results suggest that different theories accommodate (and may incentivize) different methods. For example, some theories are mostly examined through surveys or experiments on individuals
and others through historical or case study accounts. Although researchers are wise to avoid over-commitment to theory to the point that it biases the interpretation of qualitative data, a variety of strategies can work. In ethnographic, qualitative work,
a more flexible approach to theory may be warranted, whereas in quantitative work the goal is often to begin with theories and use data narrowly to test and elaborate theories.

“This project should be valuable to students and practitioners alike because it is the first study to chart the diversity of approaches to studies of technological change,

said David J. Hess, co-author and Professor of Sociology and Associate Director of
the Vanderbilt Institute for Energy and Environment at Vanderbilt University.

“Rather than supporting any particular framework, this study provides a menu of options and set of questions that can help guide the choice of analytical frameworks.

In addition, epistemological assumptions matter, and not all theories can be combined or are compatible. A meta-theoretical perspective does not necessarily require that all or many
theories be integrated – merely that different representations are accounted for and

Dear all,

Profuse apologies in advance for any cross posting.

Given the importance of contemporary energy and climate issues, and the need for interdisciplinary research on such topics, we thought it an opportune time to create a new group of scholars, analysts, practitioners, students,
and other stakeholders organized around the themes of “energy studies,â€ “energy research,â€ “society,â€ and “social science.â€  We are calling this the “Energy and Social Science Network,â€ or EASSN.  The EASSN offers a platform to discuss how social and technical
issues related to both energy production and consumption interact. It is open to people from any discipline, country, region, or level of experience, and also not limited to any particular technology, sector, or topic.

The formation of the EASSN builds on the recent conclusion of the
First Annual “Energy for Society Conference in Spain as well as the continued success
of the journal Energy Research & Social Science, although it will operate independently of these two entities.  Ideally
the Network will discuss the following, among other items:

1.
Fellowships and job opportunities

2.
Calls for papers and special issues

3.
Funding and grant opportunities

4.
New publications

5.
Upcoming seminars and conferences

6.
Contemporary energy and climate news items

We want the group to be inclusive and open, so please do forward to any and all who may be interested.  Those wishing to join the mailing list need to merely follow the instructions below.  We may indeed start doing newsletters
in the future, alongside a more formal webpage, but not yet. Let’s see how it goes.

The Energy and Social Science Network (EASSN) provides an interdisciplinary forum for the discussion of how social and technical issues related to both energy production and consumption interact. Energy production, distribution,
and consumption all have both technical and human components, and the latter involve the human causes and consequences of energy-related activities and processes as well as social structures that shape how people interact with energy systems. The Network is
to support those who hold that energy analysis therefore needs to look beyond the dimensions of technology and economics to include these social and human elements.

[gep-ed] Experts within deliberative processes of public dialogues/decision-making

2017-02-03 Thread Maniates, Michael Fields
Dear Colleagues,

An advanced undergraduate student working with me been exploring over this past
year the role and behavior of 'experts' within deliberative processes of public
input and decision-making. Her theoretical work is on fire, but her empirical
case-study set remains wobbly.

Specifically, she is having a difficult time developing a robust collection of
documented examples - reports, even better if transcripts - of public
deliberation exercises, such as facilitated dialogues on issues of public
interest, that involve experts (e.g. in the life and physical sciences,
engineering, economics, etc.). She is particularly interested in cases where
experts are present and involved throughout the deliberation itself, as opposed
to only contributing to the initial information sessions.

We've spent considerable time hunting for this sort of case-study material,
with less than stellar results. Maybe it's just not out there? Before we
throw in the towel I thought it best to send out this request for tips, clues,
or insight.

Please email me directly and I'll post a summary to the list of what I receive.

Much appreciated, and with many thanks,
Michael

2016-07-03 Thread Maniates, Michael Fields
I’ve enjoyed good success with Deborah Stone’s The Policy Paradox: The Art of
Political Decision Making. It’s the main text for my “Theory and Practice of
Environmental Policymaking” seminar. The book dissects the limitations of the
‘rationality project’ in applied policymaking and illustrates how divergent
understandings of efficiency, equity, welfare, security, and liberty
inevitability produce policy outcomes driven more by values and politics than
fact and logic.

The book isn’t the pithy treatment that you’re looking for, but perhaps the
summary tables in the early chapters will prove helpful.

[gep-ed] Iceland: Culture of Sustainability

2016-04-13 Thread Maniates, Michael Fields
Dear Colleagues,

A handful of students in EnvStudies here have scored a travel grant to spend a
few weeks in Iceland this June on a project they're calling "The Culture of
Sustainability: Iceland." They are now looking to expand their list of
contacts and interesting-people-to-meet in Iceland around 'environment' and
'sustainability' broadly construed.

If you had advanced undergrads in environmental studies tromping around Iceland
for a few weeks in June 2016, who would you want them to meet up with, see, or
try to get an appointment with? Shoot any answers you may have to that
question to me privately, and I'll compile a list for all you
Iceland-Sustainability fans out there.

Cheers,

Dear colleagues,

For those of you who cannot attend the International Studies Association (ISA)
Environmental Studies Sections (ESS) Business Meeting in Atlanta (and so cannot
vote in person), this is the electronic ballot for the ESS 2016 elections.
There are vacancies on the Executive Committee, Sprout Committee, and
Nominations Committee.

Please reply to kate.nevi...@utoronto.ca.
Advance/online voting is open from Thursday, March 3 to Thursday, March 17.

Please note that the Sprout Committee has a slightly unusual situation this
year: given Fariborz Zelli’s early withdrawal from the Committee last year in
order to take on the responsibility of Vice Chair, there is an offset term for
one of the vacancies. To ensure continuity on the Committee, and to return to
the usual pattern of vacancies on the Committee, one of the current Sprout
members has agreed to stay on for a third term. We are seeking confirmation
from the ESS membership that you approve this term extension.

You can fill out the ballot below, or use the attached Word document ballot. In
either case, please be sure to mark your choices clearly -- and again, send
your completed ballots to Kate Neville:

[gep-ed] Personal Request: Graduate School Recommendations?

2015-09-24 Thread Maniates, Michael Fields
Dear Colleagues,

I write with a request of a personal nature, and I am grateful to you in
advance for any help you can offer.

Summary: Can you recommend especially strong master-level graduate programs
for a student with a strong academic training in international affairs and
'development,' who has some research experience in South Africa and who will
soon be completing a two-year stint with the Peace Corps in Ethiopia? She
wishes to join a program that will enhance her theoretical and practitioner
schools, studying as part of a cohort of especially talented graduate students.

Longer Story: My daughter, Sarah Maniates, graduated a few years back with a
degree in International Studies and Development from Kenyon College, a
prestigious liberal arts college in the United States. After working at an NGO
in Washington DC for eight months, she signed up with the Peace Corps and is
now teaching English (and engaged in myriad other projects) in a small town
north of Bahardar in Ethiopia.

Sarah may be leaving the Peace Corps in May 2016 after completing her two-year
initial obligation, and she is now looking to identify graduate programs that
might best advance her aims. She's looking for a graduate program (MA/MS for
now, as she seeks to continue her work as a practitioner) that will help her
advance her interests in the ambiguities of 'development' in Africa, with a
particular focus on east Africa and South Africa (as she has spent some time in
this country as well). She has developed considerable on-the-ground expertise
in education and educational policy in Ethiopia, and thus may wish to pursue
this topic area in her studies. Sarah is at home with theory - she's
theoretically inclined, to be sure - but she hopes for a graduate program,
beginning at the master's level, that balances theory and practice in ways that
will make her a more effective agent for change, perhaps by returning to work
in east Africa or South Africa.

Any strong recommendations for programs in the United States or Europe?
Please reply to me off-list and I will compile and distribute the responses,
which may prove helpful to those of you with students or recent graduates who
fit the profile of my daughter.

With many thanks and best wishes,

Michael Maniates

Job posting: Interdisciplinary environment and social science position at the
University of Utah

The University of Utah has created a new, interdisciplinary faculty cluster
focusing on Society, Water, and Climate (SWC). This transformative cluster
connects research on ecology, hydrology, air quality, climate change, societal
response, and policy, melding multiple scientific perspectives to lead society
towards sustainable solutions in a changing world. This interdisciplinary
cluster is focused on enhancing the University of Utah's core commitment to
sustainability, and complementing ongoing, related research across departments,
colleges, and centers on campus. The University of Utah has hired an
ecohydrologist, air quality scientist, and a glaciologist as part of the first
round of funding. A full description of the SWC team can be found at
http://www.utah.edu/faculty/swc/.

As part of this cluster initiative, we are seeking Social or Behavioral
Scientist applicants for a tenure-track or tenured faculty position at the
advanced Assistant or Associate rank to begin in July 2016. Candidates should
have an excellent and sustained record of research, a demonstrated ability to
generate extramural funding, and extensive experience in working with diverse
researchers from across the disciplinary spectrum on projects that link the
natural and social sciences in the areas of climate and/or water.

The successful candidate must examine the human dimensions of environmental
change, as they relate to water and climate change. Research should address at
least one of the following areas: sustainability, policy, governance,
institutions, communications, planning, behavior change, conservation, cultural
adaptation, human behavior, conflict, energy, food security, land use,
decision-making under conditions of scarcity, effects of the natural
environment on healthy human development, environmental influences on human
cognition, behavior, and health, or experiences that promote engagement with
the environment and environmental issues. Research should include
theoretically-grounded quantitative approaches. Possible home departments for
the hire include: Anthropology, Economics, Geography, Political Science,
Psychology, and Sociology. The successful candidate may also have an
affiliation with the Environmental and Sustainability Studies Program.

To begin the application process, go to:
https://utah.peopleadmin.com/postings/43900.

The University of Utah is committed to providing resources to support and grow
the SWC cluster. An interdisciplinary committee composed of social and natural
scientists will review the applications. The successful candidate must
demonstrate potential for genuine collaboration in the SWC cluster and with
other interdisciplinary centers at the University of Utah.

The University of Utah is a comprehensive and diverse Research I public
institution located in the Wasatch Front urban corridor with easy access to
research and recreational opportunities in the Rocky Mountains, Great Basin,
and the Colorado Plateau. Salt Lake City is a dynamic, high-tech and
bike-friendly metropolitan area with high-quality cultural and entertainment
amenities, an extensive public transit system, a sunny, dry four-season climate
and the Greatest Snow on Earth. With an enrollment of 31,000 students, it is
the flagship university for the state of Utah. The University of Utah is an
Equal Opportunity/Affirmative Action employer and educator. Minorities, women,
veterans, and those with disabilities are strongly encouraged to apply.
Veterans' preference is extended to qualified veterans. Reasonable disability
accommodations will be provided with adequate notice. For additional
information about the University's commitment to equal opportunity and access
see: http://www.utah.edu/nondiscrimination/.

Review of applications will begin on September 15, 2015, with the position open
until filled. Using the online application system applicants should provide a
cover letter that discusses their climate and water research and addresses
their participation in interdisciplinary research teams. In addition applicants
should provide a CV and research statement. Applicants need to provide the
names, institutions, and email addresses of exactly three references who will
only be contacted if the applicant advances past the first round of review. The
search committee also requests that candidates upload three examples of
published research (journal articles, book excerpts, etc.).

[gep-ed] Cases: Transnational Advocacy Networks?

2015-07-05 Thread Maniates, Michael Fields
Hello All,

My colleague Chin-Hao Huang and I are on the hunt for a handful of tightly
written case studies, accessible to undergraduates new to the field, on
transnational advocacy networks. Our thinking is to pair the cases with a
theoretical reading (such as Margaret Keck and Kathryn Sikkink's Transnational
Advocacy Networks in International and Regional
Politicshttp://isites.harvard.edu/fs/docs/icb.topic446176.files/Week_7/Keck_and_Sikkink_Transnational_Advocacy.pdf)
as part of a week-long unit on thinking beyond the State.

Do any accessible and tidy case studies/narratives of transnational advocacy

Thanks so much, and best wishes to all.

Kimberly,

It's not a PhD-level course and it's been a few years since I last taught it,
but I like my GEP undergraduate-level syllabi (it's the one I taught at UBC,
but I'm developing one here for CIDE at the graduate level, for Masters and PhD
students). The last two versions are attached. In previous versions I've used
textbooks by many of the members of this list. The versions I'm sharing now use
mostly online materials and journal articles.

From these you can get a few references. I also would point you to this
website: http://www.umsl.edu/~robertsondb/248/sy248bib.html

I seem to recall (other GEP-ED list members may recall better) that someone
(perhaps Mike Maniates?) had already compiled a website of GEP syllabi. I've
had a migraine since yesterday so forgive if I can't provide more detail.

Best wishes and good luck with your course.

Raul

Dear colleagues,
I am developing a new PhD-level research seminar on Global Environmental
Politics scheduled for this fall. It is intended to be a core seminar for
graduate students studying both IR and/or environmental politics. I have
significant flexibility in the topics we address, and am interested in placing
a significant emphasis on justice and equity issues in GEG, as well as
introduce students to a variety of methodological approaches. At the same time,
I intend to include some of the more classic works in GEP. What books and
articles would you recommend along any of these lines?
I will return a compiled list to the listserv. Also, if you are willing to
share any of your syllabi for similar PhD courses, I would be very grateful!
Thank you in advance for your suggestions!
Best,
Kim
