[Goanet-News] 'Romi is a script, cannot be spoken' (Kiran Budkuley, in ToI)
'Romi is a script, cannot be spoken' What Konkani needs is a battery of welltrained, competent teachers, not an additional script, writes Kiran Budkuley Of late, a lot of dust is being kicked up for an additional script for Goa's official language Konkani. Those who demand official recognition for Konkani in Roman (Romi) script, argue as though 'Romi Konkani' were an independent dialect. These misconceived arguments are based less on linguistic or cultural facts and more on unscientific reasoning. For example, the protagonists consider — as is evident from their oft-aired arguments — that Devnagari is a 'Hindu script' and hold that there exists a 'Romi Konkani' of the Christians as distinct from 'Devnagari Konkani'. While it is true that a majority of those who write Konkani in the Romi script are Christians, several illustrious non-Christian writers, following the trend set by Shenoi Goembab, have also been using it. Similarly, while almost all Goan Hindus write in the Devnagari script, a large percent of Christians in the age group of 10-50 years, also do. It is often argued (wrongly) that Christian children find it hard to write in the Devnagari script, implying thereby that enmass, they lack some faculty that their counterparts in other religions happen to possess. Is the script of a language tied indelibly to the umbilical chord of a certain faith? We have been conveniently ignoring one fact: The level of writing-competence among average students, in any script, depends hugely (almost exclusively) on teaching-competence and not merely on student-competence. So, what we presently need is a battery of well-trained, competent Konkani teachers. Not an additional script. Romi script protagonists also contend that it is an aspect of Goan Christian culture. While one respects the sentiments of Christians who believe that their dialectic variations of Konkani are distinct and need to be preserved, one can not but laugh at the view expressed that there is something called Romi Konkani that is 'spoken' by Christians. The simple fact, is that 'Romi' is a term derived from 'Roman' to denote a 'script' — a mode of writing. Further a 'script' cannot be spoken by any one. Bardexi (Baardeshi?), Saxtti (Sashti), Antruzi (Antruji) are some of the dialects of Konkani, recognized by linguists and scholars. However, those who believe in the distinctness of Christian variant(s) rightly want it to be preserved and passed to posterity as a mark of their cultural exclusiveness. But this 'exclusive' component comprises the Konkani lexicon. It finds expression in the stylistic or grammatical mode of Konkani. It is used in the day-to-day vocabulary, in the manner of speaking, and in the pronunciation of words. But it cannot be expressed in or through script. For instance, 'hem oxem ghodta' can be also written as 'hen ashem ghadtta,' or even as 'hem oshem ghodtta'. Script cannot ensure that what is written will be pronounced the way it is intended by the writer; just as what is pronounced in a certain way will be accurately captured in the script. If the mere use of the Roman script could have brought in a perfect coordination of sounds and spellings, then languages as diverse as English, Portuguese, Spanish, Italian would not have had nouns such as 'Don Quixote' written uniformly while being pronounced differently. Conversely, why would they use different spellings/names for definite names such as London/Panaji. Even the holy name of Christ is written and pronounced differently while using an identical script. The reason for these variations is not on account of any flaw in these languages or in the script; it lies in the 'distinctness of the linguistic and cultural context' of these European languages, in spite of their use of a common Roman script. Moreover, these examples show beyond doubt, that sounds associated with alphabets of the Roman script, can and do vary from language to language, as do the letters of the alphabet itself, even with regard to native terms. Mere script does not give any cultural exclusiveness to a language-culture group. Devnagari script is acknowledged as near-perfect, particularly for indigenous/native sounds and words. It is the most accommodative even for non-indigenous or foreign sounds, due to a well-demarcated consonantvowel-diphthongal structure ascribed within its alphabet scheme which makes for consistent phonetic patterns. In other words, the Devnagari script has a syllabicsound base to its alphabet. Moreover, since this script is indigenous to the Indo-Aryan languages, it can account for all the sounds native to Konkani, which is also an Indo-Aryan language. Fixing the native Konkani words and phonetics into the Romi script had been a historical necessity for the European Christian missionaries well-versed with the Konkani language. Their efforts to write in an alien language by using the script of their own language (i.e. Portuguese) are commendable. So is the worth of

[Goanet] Disqualify Navelim and Curtorim MLAs - Mickky Pacheco files petition to Speaker!
Mickky’s move most foul, Alemao tells emissary HERALD REPORTER PANJIM, OCT 4 – Enraged by the filing of disqualification petition against him by a ministerial colleague, PWD Minister Churchill Alemao today raised the issue with All India Congress Committee (AICC) General Secretary in-charge of Goa desk B K Hariprasad who arrived here today. In fact, he displayed his resentment at the Idd Milan function hosted by Chief Minister Digambar Kamat at his official bungalow here this evening. Accompanied by his younger brother – Urban Development Minister Joaquim Alemao – Churchill was closeted with Hariprasad for a long time. He is learnt to have told the emissary that this gross indiscipline in the Congress-led coalition shouldn’t be taken lightly. He has also said that filing of the disqualification petition by Tourism Minister Mickky Pacheco (NCP) against him and Reginaldo Lourenco is a big conspiracy not just against him, but also against the Congress-led government. The PWD minister suspects that some senior Congress leaders, including those who are expecting early assembly polls, are behind the move. He is also understood to have said that his detractors — who are demanding that Joaquim be dethroned and PWD divested — cannot be allowed to have their way by making use of the disqualification petition against him. There were rumours making the rounds that the axe may fall on Joaquim if the High Command wants to induct Cumbarjua MLA Pandurang Madkaikar in the Cabinet. Sources however said that the High Command would not go for any major changes so soon. Sources in the government said that Churchill requested Hariprasad to take up the issue of indiscipline at the highest level. He is also learnt to have said that if such a situation had happened in other States, the minister concerned would have been sacked. “The chief minister cannot keep quiet in such matters,” he is learnt to have said. During the deliberations, GPCC chief Subhash Shirodkar was also present. Among others who attended the function were Urban Development Minister Jose Philip D’Souza, Education Minister Babush Monserrate, MLAs Pandurang Madkaikar, Nilkant Halarnkar, Agnelo Fernandes. __ Throwing political situation in a tizzy, Tourism Minister Mickky Pacheco, on October 3, filed a petition before the Speaker seeking disqualification of PWD Minister Churchill Alemao and Curtorim MLA Aleixo Reginald Lourenco under Xth Schedule of the Constitution. Apart from seeking disqualification of Churchill and Reginald, Pacheco also wants the Speaker to restrain Alemao and Lourenco from participating and/or voting in the State Legislative Assembly pending the hearing and final disposal of the aforesaid petition. (Today's Gomantak Times) PANAJI- Senior Congress leaders had discussions on some key issues with the general secretary of the All India Congress Committee (AICC), Mr B K Hari Prasad who arrived in the state on Saturday. The two key issues before the party at present are the selection of the candidate for the upcoming Pale constituency by-election and the resignation of a cabinet minister if Mr Pandurang Madkaikar is to be inducted in the ministry. Party sources said that the PWD Minister, Mr Churchill Alemao was strongly batting for his brother and Urban Development Minister, Mr Joaquim Alemao during a discussion with Mr Hari Prasad, whose name has often figured as the Minister to be dropped. Party sources also said that the disqualification petition filed by a NCP Minister against Mr Churchill and Mr Reginaldo Lourenco also figured with Mr Churchill demanding action against the Minister. The discussion took place on the top floor of the Chief Ministers residence that was the also the venue of the Chief Ministers Id-Milan party. The Education Minister, Mr Atasnassio Monserrate and Revenue Minister, Mr Jose Philip D Souza entered at the fag end of the party and were involved in discussions with Mr Digambar Kamat, AICC general secretary Mr Hari Prasad and GPCC president, Mr Subhash Shirodkar. Earlier the Governor, Dr S S Siddhu and Mr Pandurang Madkaikar among others came for the dinner. www.navhindtimes.com Goa's Pride - http://www.goa-world.com http://in.youtube.com/watch?v=_Avn6_AepNwfeature=related Gulf-Goans e-Newsletter is presented by Ulysses Menezes, www.goa-world.com and moderated by Gaspar Almeida (since 1994) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fywTuf-9S0kfeature=email

[Goanet] Fw: I AM VERY VERY JEALOUS OF ALEXIO REGINALDO LOURENCO
- Original Message - From: floriano To: Ashwin Tombat Sent: Sunday, October 05, 2008 11:31 AM Subject: I AM VERY VERY JEALOUS OF ALEXIO REGINALDO LOURENCO This Sunday morning, I didn't go for the Sunday Mass as usual. The reason being that I have long since realized that I don't fit among the 'only' SUNDAY CHRISTIANs or SUNDAY Catholics or whatever. But Sunday, although it is supposed to be a day of rest, life is so much of a rat-race, that it is next to impossible for a guy who has to feed his own stomach (extra on a Sunday) as well as put food on the plates of the family members, to have the luxury of resting, that too the whole day through. There was a time when a New Lifer passing by, wished me a happy Sunday as I was watering my coconut trees and reminded me that one does not have to water one's trees, that GOD does it. 'Oh!' I had said to him. Wish your GOD would hold this hose-pipe for me, sometimes. No, that is not what I am punching this keyboard for. The reason is that when I picked up my Sunday newspapers, wanting to give a cursory glance at the news headlines, I found the 'HERALD' most heavy for once to lift off the table. When I started flipping page after page and until I got to Page 10, I could see it was the heaviness of the Goa's Mineral Ore. The doyen of Goa's mining Industry, Vishwasrao D. Chowgule was no more. Sad, God rest his soul in peace. Perhaps the RP-2021 didn't go well with him, was what crossed my mind. But the real weight hit me when I turned to page 12. If anyone could be blue with envy, I am your man. And all this while I had thought Aleixo Reginaldo Lourenco was a nice person to have as one's MLA. But such infatuation? My Gawd Almighty. Entire page 12 and 13, nothing but Aleixo Reginaldo Lourenco?. 'Ah' I muttered, turning to page 14 and 15. That's the end of him. And I was beginning to thaw from my blue envy, but page 16 and 17 got me the relapse. And even the last page 18 was not a consolation. Aleixo Reginaldo was staring at me there too. Little consolation that it was just the two of him. Blue envy can be reel bad. Forgetting the chores I was getting ready to handle, I dived into action just to see how heavy this guy really was. So I ran down to my den to get a paper and pencil, the calculator and the ruler. And I set about checking the 'centimeter columns' of each ad. It took me a while and this is what I got: 1x5x1; 1x6x2; 1x7x2; 2x4x1; 2x5x34; 2x6x7; 2x 6.5 x 3; 2x7x4; 2x8x3; 2x12x1; 2x10x2; 4x8x3; 8x12.5x1. which makes a total of 78 ads with a count of 918 centimeter columns, with just one 1x6 ad without the birthday boy's picture. That does no justice to the straight record setting. But I must confess that most of all I envy your public relations officer, whoever it is, for his gifted talent of convincing so many people to shell out to make you the most popular boy in town. And, surely, it does not go well to ease out the mindset of your colleague, Mickky Pacheco, who has different plans for you. Not being used to the rates per centimeter column of display ads, I put it down to a mere Rs. 120, the rate I was familiar with in the past. The figure of 1,10, 168.00 was not very convincing in these days of drawing blood. So I invested in a call to Herald and got the current rate of display ad, a whopping Rs. 280/cc. My fingers were literally quivering when I punched the calculator keys. Whow! Cheers Herald. You have hit the gold mine. Who cares for the miserable iron ore when one smart recently elected birthday boy can give you Rs. 2, 57, 040.00. This is not the New Year's resolution but I have resolved to start a News Paper. And I am going to give a substantial discount to all the political and non political birthday boys. And to think of it that reel blue envy can catapult you into the right type of business, Happy Birthday Aleixo Reginaldo Lourenco. May you live longest and thereby may you hot up the newspaper birthday greetings competition among your other 39 colleagues like never before so that my new business venture soars up into the sky. [Goanet] Goa targets drink, drugs as new tourist season starts
Goa targets drink, drugs as new tourist season starts PANAJI, India (AFP) - The Indian resort state of Goa is getting tough on drink, drugs and loud music as the new tourist season starts, to restore its tarnished reputation after the shock murder of a British teenager. Scarlett Keeling's death earlier this year cast a long shadow over the party state in western India, with claims that drug abuse and drunken debauchery were taking place with the full knowledge of the police. But the local force is now looking to crack down on the practice as the first foreign visitors arrive in search of fun and winter warmth on Goa's inviting tropical beaches. From this season onwards, shack (beach hut) owners will be held responsible for drug consumption, sale or deals in their premises, police superintendent Bosco George told AFP. Scarlett, 15, had been on a six-month holiday with her family when she was found dead on a beach in February. At first it was thought she had drowned. But under pressure from her mother, police opened a murder probe after a post-mortem examination revealed the teenager had taken a cocktail of drink and drugs shortly before her death. A bartender and an alleged drug dealer are currently awaiting trial, accused of plying her with booze and narcotics in one of Goa's many palm-thatched beach huts. One was said to have repeatedly raped her before leaving her for dead. George said they were now striving to keep Goa's beaches drug-free -- to allay fears about the safety of visitors and dispel claims against the state home ministry that they allowed pushers to target tourists. Nearly three million tourists flock to the former Portuguese colony every year, drawn by its climate and reputation as a centre of the hippie counter-culture in the 1960s and 1970s. Of those, some 400,000 are foreigners. But return visitors could find the nightlife quieter this year, as police have told beach hut owners not to play loud music after midnight, to stick to licensing laws and stamp out drugs. The shack owners can't just get away with any nonsense, said George, who led the high-profile probe into Scarlett's death. Cane-wielding police officers will be patrolling the beaches, stopping anyone seen loitering, especially at night, he added. We really want to stop all the illegalities. It's not the sole duty of police to do so. Everybody has to be conscious not only about their rights but also about their duties, George added. Goa's tourism authority, which regulates the beach huts, has already issued 305 licences to serve food and alcohol on the state's 105-kilometre (65-mile) stretch of coastline. The huts are also allowed to keep sun loungers. But some beach hut owners are opposed to the new measures. You can't hold shack owners responsible if someone snorts drugs on his premises, said Agnelo Silva, who owns a beach hut in Colva, south Goa. We are not supplying the drugs and it is the responsibility of the police to check the trade. A common complaint is that owners feel that they cannot check every cigarette smoked for signs of drugs. They also fear police harassment if they refuse to comply. If we continually frisk or question customers, no one will come to my shack, said another beach hut owner, Elvino Rodrigues. Tourist chiefs, though, back the police action. It's a good step. All this while we have been saying that safety and security of the tourists is very important, said tourism ministry official Lyndon Monteiro. If we allow the drug trade to flourish, we will lose good tourists. We want healthy tourism. http://afp.google.com/article/ALeqM5jz-Pa4AiXdyJWN-0oHthEFVGvaWA ~(^^)~ Avelino
[Goanet] Conversion business By Khushwant Singh in Deccan Chronicle
Conversion business By Khushwant Singh Recent incidents of violence and vandalism against Christians and their churches deserve to be condemned unreservedly. They have blackened the fair face of Mother India and ruined the reputation of Hindus being the most religiously tolerant people in the world. At the same time, we must take a closer look at people who convert from one faith to another. To start with, let it be understood that these days there are no forced conversions anywhere in the world. India is no exception. Those who assert that the poor, innocent and ignorant of India are being forced to accept Christianity are blatant liars. A few, very few educated and well-to-do men and women convert to another faith when they do not find solace in the faith of their ancestors. Examples are to be found in America and Europe of men and women of substance turning from Judaism and Christianity to Buddhism, Hinduism, Islam and Sikhism. There are also men and women who convert to the faith of those they wish to marry. We have plenty of cases of Hindu, Muslim, Christian and Sikh inter-marriages. However, the largest number of converts come from communities discriminated against. The outstanding example was that of Dalit leader Bhimrao Ambedkar who led his Mahar community to embrace Buddhism because they were discriminated against by upper caste Hindus. This is also true of over 90 per cent of Indian Muslims whose ancestors being lower caste embraced Islam which gave them equal status. That gives lie to the often-repeated slander that Islam made converts by the sword. An equally large number of people converted out of gratitude. They were neglected, ignorant and poor. When strangers came to look after them, opened schools and hospitals for them, taught them, healed them and helped them to stand on their own feet to hold their heads high, they felt grateful towards their benefactors. Most of them were Christian missionaries who worked in remote villages and brought hope to the lives of people who were deprived of hope. To this day, Christian missionaries run the best schools, colleges and hospitals in our country. They are inexpensive and free of corruption. They get converts because of the sense of gratitude they generate. Can this be called forcible conversion? Why don't the great champions of Hinduism look within their hearts and find out why so many are disenchanted by their pretensions of piety? Let them first set their own houses in order, purge the caste system out of Hindu society and welcome with open arms all those who wish to join them. No one will then convert from Hinduism to another religion. The Great Indian Chew Niccolao Manucci of Venice came to India as a boy of 14 in 1655, and spent the rest of his life in the country. After living in Delhi, Agra and Goa, practising as a self-taught doctor, he returned to Pondicherry where he died in 1717. His Storia di Mogor has a lot of salacious gossip about the goings-on in the harems of Mughal kings. On his first journey from Surat to Agra and Delhi, Manucci was much intrigued by Indians' favourite indulgence. He wrote: Among other things, I was much surprised to see that almost everybody was spitting something red as blood. I imagined it must be due to some complaint of the country, or that their teeth had become broken. I asked an English lady what was the matter, and whether it was the practice in this country for the inhabitants to have their teeth extracted. When she understood my question, she answered that it was not any disease, but a certain aromatic leaf called in the language of the country — paan, or in Portuguese, betel. She ordered some leaves to be brought, ate some herself and gave me some to eat. Having taken them, my head swam to such an extent that I feared I was dying. It caused me to fall down; I lost my colour, and endured agonies; but she poured into my mouth a little salt, and brought me to my senses. The lady assured me that everyone who ate it for the first time felt the same effects. Betel or paan, is a leaf similar to the ivy-leaf, but the betel leaf is longer. It is very medicinal, and eaten by everybody in India. They chew it along with arrecas which physicians call Avelans Indicas, and a little katha, which is the dried juice of a certain plant that grows in India. Smearing the betel leaf with little of katha, they chew them together which makes their lips scarlet and gives a pleasant scent. It happens with the eaters of betel, as to those accustomed to take tobacco, that they are unable to refrain from taking it many times a day. Thus the women of India, whose principal business it is to tell stories and eat betel, are unable to remain many minutes without it in their mouths. It is an exceedingly common practice in India to offer betel leaf by way of politeness, chiefly among the great men, who when anyone pays them a visit offer betel at the time of leaving as a mark of goodwill, and of the estimation in which

[Goanet] Lady constable attempts suicide
Lady constable attempts suicide 5 Oct 2008, 0257 hrs IST, Preetu Nair,TNN PANAJI: A lady police constable Abhijita Chari (22) attempted suicide alleging stress and mental harassment at her work place. Chari, who joined Indian Reserve Battalion (IRB) in June 2006, consumed twelve tablets on Saturday at 7 pm in the barracks. On seeing that she was not feeling well, her colleagues rushed her to Goa Medical College, Bambolim. The doctors at GMC said that she had consumed Crocin, Norflox and Lomotil. She was given a stomach wash and admitted in a ward. Doctors said that her condition was stable. Speaking to TOI, Chari said that she had attempted suicide as she was stressed after being mentally harassed for the last two years by her seniors. She also said that she had informed the SP Waman Tari, who is also the deputy commandant of IRB, about her situation at an orderly rule on Friday. Confirming this, SP Tari said that he had heard her on Friday. The reason why she attempted suicide is not yet known. We will be conducting an inquiry into this to find out what the problem is, he said. Meanwhile, her mother, Arjuna Chari alleged that her daughter's seniors were deliberately trying to defame her by creating an impression that she is of loose character. A medico-legal case has been registered. http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/Goa/Lady_constable_attempts_suicide/a rticleshow/3561220.cms ~(^^)~ Avelino

[Goanet] Draft Bill (MPPEI Act, 2008) proposes 10% seats for rich NRIs in Maharastra
Bill proposes 10% seats for rich NRIs 1 Oct 2008, 0409 hrs IST, Hemali Chhapia,TNN MUMBAI: Even as lakhs of students battle it out for every precious seat in a government professional college, the state has decided to alter its clie ntele from the economically weak and middle class to the NRIs, who come with their high disposal income. In a contentious move, the Maharastra government has decided to divert seats from the merit quota to make way for the rich and the mighty in its aided institutes. The draft bill—Maharastra Private Professional Educational Institutions (regulation of admissions and fees) Act, 2008—states that aided colleges will be allowed to give 10% of their seats in each course to foreign or non-resident Indians. What’s even shocking is that these students will not be subjected to take any entrance test, which is a pre-requisite for any student aspiring to enrol in a professional course. According to the draft Bill, these students will be admitted on the basis of “inter-se merit among applicants for such seats’’. Aided professional colleges in Maharashtra include Sir JJ College of Architecture, Veermata Jijabai Technological Institute, Sardar Patel College of Engineering, Walchand College of Engineering and Rachna Sansad Academy of Architecture. In all, five engineering colleges, four pharmacy colleges, three architecture, 16 ayurveda, three unani and one home science college in the state are aided professional institutions. To date, admission to all state-aided institutions is based on the scores achieved in the government common entrance test. Students pay a nominal fee, which is way lower than what is charged in private professional colleges. With the new rule, the general category pool of seats will shrink. Currently, every aided college has 50% reservation for backward category students and the remaining seats are filled by general category students. Now that pool of seats will have to shared with the NRI candidates too. While minister for higher, technical and medical education Dilip Walse-Patil refused to comment on the issue, he said a group of experts, headed by the state law secretary, was poring through the draft Bill, before it can be presented in the Cabinet’s winter session. One of the committee members said the state has decided to “sell’’ a part of their seats in aided colleges with the aim of cutting the state’s burden on annual grant that is provided by the government. Currently, an aided institution either receives over 80% of its grants, which include recurring expenditure like salaries, from the state. “If a college takes in a handful of students with deep pockets, what is the harm in charging them more? We want aided colleges to be self sustaining, so they can also invest in high-end equipment and facilities,’’ said a member of the state-appointed committee. Vivek Korde, president of the Forum Against Commercialisation of Education, lambasted the state for adopting such a policy. “Aided institutions run largely by the government are the only hope for meritorious students in this age when professional education is getting out of reach for middle class students. Why does the state want to sell these seats at a high rate?’’ he said. Moreover, the draft Bill states that the state government holds the rights to set fees for these NRI students, defined as a ward or a child of an NRI. [Goanet] Build up Zero Chances within Zero Tolerance
Dr. U. G. Barad wrote: Of late increasing blasts and waves of violence are rocking city after city in India. After every blast or violence one or other outfits / mastermind is named as suspect. Thereafter that case(s) is transferred from the Police to the Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) and then from the ATS to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). And finally 'Operation Cover-up' takes place only with a covert view not to punish the culprit(s). This raises the obvious question: does continuance of intimidation indicate that our apex investigation agencies or judiciary are not discharging their functional duties as is required? There might be n numbers of reasons for initiating 'Operation Cover-up' as there might be equal numbers of reasons for terrorism activities flaring up. Comment: 1. As an aside, I suspect this write up has been ghost written as the post does not carry the trade mark bad English, atrocious spellings and lack of clarity of the subject. However, if Dr Barad is indeed the author of this post, then kudos to him for the marked improvement over the previous posts. I hope he will maintain these standards. 2. If one has been following news reports in the media, and I mean the mainstream media, it would be amply clear that our police have little or no clue to what is happening. After every incident, under public pressure, they immediately jump into action and effect a number of arrests stating that they have nabbed the masterminds and broken the module. Until the next incident takes place, by which time public memory being short, the story is again repeated. 3. Under police torture, confessions are obtained. But since the actual culprits are at large, there is no stopping further incidents. 4. Bomb blasts and terrorism is not the monopoly of only Islamic terrorists. There are terrorists in the extreme right too who have so far not been investigated with the same seriousness and enthusiasm. There have been incidents in Kanpur, Nanded, Navi Mumbai and other places where the SS which is affiliated to the HJS( headquartered in Goa!!!) have been found to have a hand. Incidents in muslim dominated Malegaon and Hyderabad where muslims have been the main victims suggest deeper investigations are needed. Dr Barad wrote: In a pluralistic society like ours, national identity cannot be adjudged by any litmus test ... This nation does not belong to any single race. This expression is absolutely true and in line with the Constitution of India. But the biggest question is: Is his government practicing what he is preaching? On the contrary, his government is seen pampering minorities and yet not willing to finalize minority related 103rd Amendment - a perfect double role strategy which smells dubiousness. Comment: The sangh parivar loves using the words 'pampering minorities' and 'minority appeasement' and as examples they point out to the Haj subsidy or declaring Prophet Mohammed's birthday as a public holiday. However, they gloss over the tax exemption given to HUF's or subsidies given by various state government for religious pilgrimages. eg: subsidy given by Gujarat govt to Hindu pilgrims going to Mansarovar. They ignore the facilities govts give in places like Amarnath, Shirdi, and other religious places. Further only dalits from Hindu, Buddhist and Sikh religions are extended state benefits. Dalits who embrace Islam or Christianity are immediately deprived of any benefit. So much for pampering!!! If one reads the Sachar Committee Report it would be amply clear who is being pampered. Muslims lag behind on every development parameter except on their numbers filling state prisons. In Gujarat POTA has been used against muslims but not a single hindu was arrested under POTA inspite of the genocide committed against muslims. Dr Barad wrote: At this point, it's time to recall and read the ruling / the judgment which was passed by Allahabad High Court. The Allahabad High Court had held that Muslims with 18.5 per cent of Uttar Pradesh's population in 2001 - were not a religious minority in the state. The judgment also pronounced that state government should treat members of the Muslim community as equal to those belonging to the non-minority communities without discrimination in accordance with the law. Comment: Dr Barad fails to mention that the order was stayed by the SC and that strictures were passed by the SC against the offending Judge for exceeding his brief and giving vent to his personal prejudices. Dr Barad wrote: In short, if the bill (103rd Amendment) has to see the light of the day it has to be amended to give definitions of minorities in line with apexes courts landmark judgments and also abolish the existing national minorities pari passu. Such amendment once in place will obviate any confusion on the question of minorities. Comment: It has been the objective and dream of the sangh parivar to reduce minorities in India to the status of second

[Goanet] Current killings and violence against the Christians in India
If you are wondering where ex-Police Commissioner of Mumbai, Julio Ribeiro, is and what his thoughts are on the current killings and violence against the Christians in India, well, here is what he has to sayall we can do from our corner of the world is pray for peace and hope that better sense may prevail. The testimony of ONE CHRISTIAN Former supercop Julio Ribeiro reacts to the communal killings in Orissa Iam a Christian, a Roman Catholic to be precise. I have suddenly realised this. It is quite amazing that I did not think of myself as a Christian all these years! I was an Indian. Religion was in the private domain. No one made me feel that I was different and I never felt different. On one occasion in a temple in Punjab even the VHP's Ashok Singhal seemed well disposed! Why did it suddenly occur to me that I was a Christian? I really do not know the answer. I only know that I am sorely disappointed with the BJP for not reining in the VHP and Bajrang Dal, who like the SIMI and its offshoot, the Indian Mujahideen, feel that the best and only way to attain peace is to kill those who they think are different. My ancestors, like those of most Christians in India, were Hindus. True, I have a strange name. It is Portuguese in origin, but neither I nor the numerous other Christians sporting Portuguese surnames like Fernandes (George is a friend of the BJP) have any Portuguese blood. Our ancestors got these surnames when they were baptised and the surnames were those of the different clerics who officiated at their initiation. Was force or coercion used? I dare say it was. If not force, then certainly coercion. Lure of land, I learn, was the main instrument of that coercion. All land was appropriated by the conquerors and only those who converted retained their share. This, I dare say, was a powerful attraction. Even today, ownership of land is a dominant craving. Times were different in 1540 when the Portuguese landed in Goa. There was the Inquisition and the fervour of religious conviction. But I refuse to believe that force can be an option in this day and age. Can anyone be 'forced' to convert as the fanatics suggest? Possibly, there can be inducement. But how far can one go with inducements? Money, land, jobs, education? If money and land were in plenty to distribute, all or most converts would be immensely affluent. But that is hardly the case. Most Christian missionaries concentrate on education, health, social welfare. This may tempt somemarginalised families to cross over, but the answer to that would be to undertake such efforts yourself and not kill those who are doing what you yourself should have done long ago. The empowerment of the marginalised threatens the vested interests of the upper classes. For generations, tribals and scheduled castes have been kept down. Christian missionaries, with their stress on education and health, have challenged the foundations of this social order. That, I believe, is the cause of the present upheaval. The Christian missionaries do believe that their own religion is the only true one. All the three Abrahamanical religions, Judaism, Christianity and Islam, grounded in the theory of creation, believe that theirs is the only true religion. Judaism is not known to convert. The other two do. In this day and age, it is difficult to support the notion of conversions. I, for one, do not. To my mind it is not necessary to convert anyone. Even the Catholic Church to which I belong has accepted that good human beings, irrespective of religious belief, can attain salvation. But there are those who think otherwise. Should they be butchered? It is not only unlawful to kill. It is also immoral. And if the VHP and Bajrang Dal, like the SIMI and the Indian Mujahideen, do not understand this simple rule, it is the duty of the Indian State to make them aware of it. No excuses should be advanced to mitigate the horrendous nature of their barbarity, as some BJP leaders have done. Because excuses are quickly turned into mandates. Personally, I do not believe that many Hindus have been converted to Christianity in recent times in Karnataka or even in Orissa. In Kerala, the Christians have been around for the past 2,000 years. But if some conversions have taken place, there are legal remedies available. Surely no one can be permitted to take the law into his own hands and become prosecutor, judge and executioner rolled into one. And this is why I am disappointed with the BJP. The party has not come out strongly against the atrocities heaped on the Christians of Orissa and Karnataka. L K Advani himself studied at St Patrick's, a Jesuit school in Karachi. Nobody tried to convert him or other boys and girls who have passed out of Christian schools and colleges in India. He and they continue to be good Hindus, or Muslims or Sikhs. More important, they continue to
[Goanet] 'Romi is a script, cannot be spoken' (Kiran Budkuley, in ToI)

Re: [Goanet] Civic reforms needed. Raise the bar. What 'Incredible' India ITO?
That reminds me. I was travelling Singapore-Mumbai on SIA, and we were about to land. The usual announcement re laptops / electronic equipment to be switched off. A bloke of Indian origin, kept on using his laptop. Air-hostess was ignored. Then comes the purser, who proceeded to tell the guy off in such a manner that he literally squirmed in his seat. I could hear threats of arrest etc. Only then was the laptop turned off. I always use SIA to travel Melbourne-Singapore-Mumbai and vice versa enroute to Goa, and it is the Singapore-Mumbai sector that I usually feel embarassed with the behaviour of some deshis. The worst offender the last time I travelled, was the traffic control at Mumbai - delayed our flight unnecessarily by 3 hours, thereby causing onward connection issues. Thankfully, SIA accomodated and rearranged onward flight plans, including arranging that the last flight from Brisbane to Rockhampton be delayed by some minutes to accomodate my son's late arrival at Brisbane (we split at Singapore, he going to Brissy and I to Melb). He was the first person out, was rushed through immigration and customs by SIA personnel, and put on the flight to Rocky, at Brisbane. That's what I call real service. [Goanet] Colva Consumer Forum launches agitation for direct bus service to Colva beach
- Do GOACAN a favour, circulate this email to your family members, relatives, neighbours and friends. Help others be BETTER INFORMED - -- Colva Forum launches agitation for direct bus service to Colva beach - Volunteers of the Colva Civic and Consumer Forum and GOACAN held a protest demonstration to highlight the plight of the consumers faced with the hardship of not having a bus service from Margao KTC Bus Stand via Mungul Per Seraulim to Colva Beach. Armed with black flags and placards listing their demands on the eve of World Tourism Day, the Consumer Forum volunteers were geared up for full scale agitation which will draw National International attention as Colva is a world famous tourist destination. The consumers speaking at the protest stated that many years ago the Govt. officials had the excuse that the railway bridge at Mungul was an obstacle for the bus to ply but today the sheer vested monopoly interest on the one hand and the apathy of the Govt. officials are the cause for this hardship. Thousands of resident Goans, domestic foreign tourists are being denied access to the Colva beach from the main Margao KTC Bus Stand via Mungul although the journey could be completed in 15 minutes. The present bus route available to Colva Beach is via Benaulim village and the journey takes nearly an hour with all the bus stops along the way. Besides for the residents of Per Seraulim and Gandaulim other then the overloaded taxi service there is no bus service. The irony is there are State Transport buses from the neighboring Karnataka that come to Colva Beach but the State owned Kadamba Transport Corporation Ltd is unable to provide a daily service. In fact on some earlier occasions some vested interested parties stoned the bus that was plying which eventually stopped and the excuse that was presented was that the route is uneconomical to the bus owners. The Consumer Forum and GOACAN has decided to intensify the agitation next week after a delegation meets the various authorities to demand opening of the bus route with adequate buses plying during the day on a daily basis so that it serves the residents as well as the visiting tourists. Although the authorities like the Transport Department had received petitions from individual consumers on the bus service problem nothing concrete was done. As one placard says it all Transport Department on bus fare hike, IMMEDIATE ACTION !! on bus service to Colva, ABSOLUTE INACTION !! The Consumer Forum had been mobilising consumers to raise the issue at the Gram Sabha of the Village Panchayat of Sernabatim, Vanelim, Colva and Gandaulim and recently a resolution was unanimously passed at the Gram Sabha demanding that a bus service be started to Colva Beach via Mungul Per Seraulim The Consumer Forum will submit representations to Chief Minister Digamber Kamat, Tourism Minister Francisco Micky Pacheco, Transport Minister Ramkrishna Sudin Dhavalikar, GTDC Chairman MLA Shyam G. Satardekar, GTDC Vice Chairman Lyndon Monteiro, Tourism Director GTDC Managing Director Elvis Gomes and Zilla Panchayat Member Nelly Rodrigues demanding that they personally get involved in getting the bus service started on this route. Meanwhile the Consumer Forum will also make representations to the Collector Chairman South District Consumer Protection Council Mr. G.P. Naik, Director of Civil Supplies Consumer Affairs Mr. Sunil P. Masurkar and Mr. Jose Philip D'Souza Minister for Civil Supplies Consumer Affairs for action under the Consumer Protection Act 1986 as the consumers have been deliberately denied this bus service. -- Press Release from the Colva Civic and Consumer Forum -- GOA CIVIC AND CONSUMER ACTION NETWORK promoting civic and consumer rights in Goa GOACAN Post Box 187 Margao, Goa 403 601 GOACAN Post Box 78 Mapusa, Goa 403 507 mailto: [EMAIL PROTECTED] -- __._,_.___
[Goanet] What To Do In Falling Markets - III
I was personally hoping that the socialist bail out package would fail. In its first time around, most Republicans correctly defied the increasingly irrelevant President and voted against it. Not surprisingly, a larger fraction of the left leaning Democrats voted to support Comrade Bush. Unfortunately in its second pass, it got approved by large portions of both parties. What does it mean for America and the world? 1) In the short run, it could mean more inflation, depreciating USD values and continued declines in America's standard of living. I think the latter would have happened even if there was no bailout package. The US has been living beyond its means for a long time. Some facts to ponder: * Total government debt has crossed 10 Trillion dollars. It was around 4 Trillion just 8 years ago. As a % of GNP, it is now around 75% and is at its highest levels since the 1950's (after WW2). * US consumer savings rates are around 1-2%. In 2006, it was actually negative. The relatively so called good years of the past decade was mainly driven by high consumption using borrowed money - both at the federal and consumer level. * US trade deficits as a % of its GNP are actually lower now than in the mid 1980's. However this time around, the pillars of consumer debt and accumulated govt. debt may make this an issue in impacting the value of the dollar. I am feeling very Japanese these days. After Japan's asset bubble burst in the early 1990's, it has suffered from a decade of little or no growth. To counteract the down turn, the Japanese govt. went into many deficit spending to get itself out of its rut. It failed, so much so that compared to the US, Japan has an even worse accumulated govt. debt load of 140% of GNP. In Japan, the consumers who had the money, never stepped in to boost consumption. In the US, the financially strapped consumers will have no choice in this matter - they don't have the money. Hence it may make sense to short consumer driven sectors such as durable goods. 2) If there is place I would invest in, it is in clean/renewable energy. The bailout package has additional legislation that includes promotion of clean energy in the US. World wide wind energy demand is currently growing at a rate of 80% pa, while for solar it is around 40%. I think investing in these sectors should be reasonably safe bets. 3) Although everyone talks about inflation, I would like to suggest that the reverse - deflation may actually occur over the longer term (2+ years). It all depends upon how severe this downturn will be - bad or very bad. If the recession in protracted, we can expect significant price pressures on many products and commodities. If this happens, it would be a good idea to maintain significant cash positions. It is possible that the US could try and counteract this by printing even more money by going into even larger deficits, in which case it would be a good idea to dump the dollar. Furthermore, there is already talk to America's credit rating being downgraded. Thanks to poor management and the focus on wrong priorities such as the disastrous Iraq war, the fall of the American economy in the last 8 years has been quite stunning. Whoever wins the next election, will have a difficult challenge ahead of him. I think the fiscally conservative McCain would be a better choice, but Obama may also be ok too. Regardless, either candidate would be better than the monkey currently occupying the white house. I hope monkeys around the world will not be insulted with this reference. Marlon

[Goanet] WELL ! WELL......! Mr Advani - Fr Cedric Prakash SJ
WELL! WELL! MR. ADVANI! -Fr. Cedric Prakash sj* Well! Well! Mr. Advani! Well spoken indeed! You have called for inter-religious dialogue and in no uncertain terms you say (there are media reports quoting you) I strongly condemn these acts of violence and vandalism which cannot be condoned or justified. The law must take its course and the culprits must be brought to justice... Well, Mr. Advani I, for one, would like to believe this statement. Unfortunately, your track record exposes your double speak and well, your insincerity. As somebody aspiring to be a future Prime Minister of the country, (and the fact that you are the icon of the BJP), you will have to first rein in all the fascist forces that support your ideology and your agenda. How about booking the many from the Bajrang Dal, the RSS and the VHP who have systematically been attacking Churches and killing innocent Christians in different parts of the country ? (Orissa and Karnataka are just current examples of this reality.) How about disassociating yourself from them completely ? and perhaps, joining vast sections of the country who call for their ban ? When you call for inter-religious dialogue, I don't suppose you mean that men and women of faith should talk or dialogue with terrorist organizations? Or do you? You say you have a soft corner for Christians but then, how is it that you have never raised your voice when the Christians of Gujarat were attacked in 1998/99 by these same fascist forces and when they continue to be attacked in several other parts of the country ? You thought it prudent enough not to make a statement on Sunday 14th September when Christians and Churches were being attacked in Karnataka - just as the National BJP meeting was concluding in the State. It amuses me that you had to go to Shillong and make a statement several days after thousands of Christians have been hounded from their homes and property in Orissa. Do you think such hollow statements can actually give the BJP votes there? In your wisdom, did you not think it would have been more appropriate, if in Bangalore, your party passed a resolution condemning the attacks on Christians and other minorities in this country? So why go to Shillong to make your statement ? Do you think that the Aaam aadmi - cannot see through your ploy? However, can we start from the very beginning? What about 1990 when you began the Rath Yatra with much fanfare? In an attempt to destroy the secular fabric of our Constitution, your Rath of Death polarized Gujarat and several parts of the country as never before. Yes, it definitely garnered you votes and perhaps put your party in power (for which they are eternally grateful ! ). But any one with conventional wisdom will tell you that narrow short-term gains normally negate long-term acceptance and solutions. Hitler and his Nazi party is a classic example. As of now, you represent my Constituency in Parliament. When hundreds of innocent Muslims were burnt alive and gang-raped in our streets, you declared that it was the ISI that was responsible for setting the S6 coach on fire! Have you ever condemned the brutality and the inhumanity taking place in your own Constituency? When you speak of justice, can you echo and re-echo the words of your mentor (the former PM), to your protégé here (the Chief Minister of this land dedicated to Satyagraha and Ahimsa) that he should be following Rajdharma? How about raising your voice for victims of the Gujarat Carnage? Today in your Constituency, if one is a Muslim, one cannot buy or own a shop. Besides, in many areas, Christians too are treated as second-class citizens. Some housing societies have very clearly stated in their byelaws that Muslims would not be allowed to stay in that society. The irony is, we have the byelaws of one society which clearly state that Muslims and Sindhis will not be permitted to live in that housing society. So why don't you try buying a house in that society ? WellWellMr. Advani, this is your Constituency! Your goons came for the Muslims first, then for the Christians It is only a matter of time before they come for the Sindhis! It is definitely not too late Mr. Advani you can still show India and the world that you still cherish the values that were imparted to you through a Christian education: of tolerance, compassion, sense of justice and fair play, of equality, of respect for all religious, of not allowing people to take law and order into their own hands and hopefully show your secular face. You have a little over five years to prove it. And if the fascists of the country allow you or me to still be around in 2014, you may still have a chance to then aspire to be Prime Minister. Until then, just forget it . Well! Well! Mr. Advani! (* Fr. Cedric Prakash sj is the Director of Prashant, the Ahmedabad-based Jesuit Centre for

[Goanet] Indian Tourist Abroad - Indulging An Ugly Side
Excerpts from the weekly Outlook (July 28, 2008): Seven Deadly Habits of Indian tourists abroad. 1. Loading up on food from free breakfast buffets at hotels, often enough to last them through the day. 2. Shoplifting; bargaining incessantly in places with fixed prices. 3. Getting drunk on the plane. 4. Treating guides, hotel staff like personal servants; refusing to tip them. 5. Ogling and hitting on foreign women, even when accompanied by their wives. 6. Demanding Indian food in restaurants in Paris and Zurich. 7. Jumping queues; late for everything - and then throwing tantrums when they miss and event. It began in the plane, says the weary young man who works for one of India's top travel companies. They started changing seats haphazardly, ordering as many little packets of complimentary peanuts as they could lay their hands on, and getting drunk on all those little bottles of booze. When we landed in Bangkok, they behaved as if this was a nation of prostitutes, even hitting on the women behind the immigration counter. The men travelling with their wives were no better than the rest - a 50 plus man from Jaipur went crazy shooting pictures of women in traditional off-the-shoulder tops, often trying to hug them while his wife looked on meekly. The authorised version of Indian outbound travel is a rah rah story bristling with impressive figures. 8 million exhuberant Indians hitting foreign shores every year, their hard earned brown dollars and pounds eagerly scooped up by the international retail and tourist trade. 8 million set to double to 16 million in 2011, says Euromonitor International, and likely to soar to 50 million by 2020, according to the World Tourism Organisation. An economic downtuen may take the sheen of some of those figures, but in the long term we are told, the India outbound story can only be an upbeat one, as a rising growing middle class flies out to meet the world. [Goanet] Maoists take onus for killing VHP leader
Sunday, October 05, 2008 Maoists take onus for killing VHP leader Bhubaneswar: One of Orissa's most wanted Maoist leaders has claimed responsibility for the Aug 23 killing of a Hindu leader that triggered anti-Christian attacks in the state in which at least 35 people have been killed and thousands forced to flee to the jungles to escape rampaging mobs. Sabyasachi Panda, leader of the Orissa unit of the Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist), has said on television that his group killed Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) leader Swami Laxmanananda Saraswati and four others in Jalespata Ashram in Kandhamal district. He also warned that the rebels would kill around a dozen more people who he alleged were responsible for the communal tension in Kandhamal unless they stopped their activities. Swami Laxmanananda was a leader of the VHP and was working to bring back Brahminism that was almost disappearing. He was supported by unscrupulous traders who were exploiting poor people, Orissa TV, a local television channel, on Sunday showed Panda as saying. Hindu organisations such as the Vishwa Hindu Parishad are targeting minorities, mainly Christians, attacking them, killing them and burning their homes, said Panda, secretary of the Orissa state committee of the CPI-Maoist. The tribals are not Hindu. They are nature worshippers. There are now five lakh (half a million) Hindus in Kandhamal and this number has grown because of these forces, Panda said. They are playing riot politics, he said. We ordered the death penalty for Swami Laxmanananda. He was the main member of the VHP. They used money from non-tribal traders to build up the Bajrang Dal and ran a propaganda against Christians, he alleged. They falsely accused Christians and attacked them. This is why we killed Laxamanananda, said Panda. He also claimed that the rebels had left two letters claiming responsibility for the murders. But the state government suppressed both, he added. When a journalist on the show asked him whether he was responsible for the violence that erupted in the state after the killing of the VHP leader, Panda clarified that the rebels are not responsible. It is the VHP, the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) and the Bharatiya Janata Party that have caused the violence to strengthen their vote bank. He also criticised Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik for his failure to protect the minorities and acting on behalf of the 'RSS-VHP-Sangh' which killed Christians and destroyed their property. However, Subash Chouhan, one of the national coordinators of the Bajrang Dal, told IANS: The Sangha Parivar is not involved in the communal clashes. Orissa's Kandhamal district witnessed communal violence since Aug 23 since the killing of Saraswati. Police said they suspected the Maoists to be involved in the murder. However, Hindus in the region blamed Christians for the killing and went on a rampage against the community. At least 35 people, mostly Christians, were killed and thousands of homes burnt in Kandhamal during the violence. More than 15,000 people, mainly Christians, have taken shelter in relief camps after their houses were torched by rampaging Hindu mobs. On Sunday, authorities said no fresh violence has been reported in the region since the past two days. Source: Indo-Asian News Service -- Will the all new Indica Vista zip ahead of the Suzuki Swift? [Goanet] The strange case of Kevin John Pinto
Here is an article from the Oct 4/08, The Globe and Mail, Toronto. http://www.theglobeandmail.com/servlet/story/RTGAM.20081004.wpinto04/BNStory/Front/ Mervyn3.0 The banker, the bandit and the bounty JOSH WINGROVE From Saturday's Globe and Mail October 4, 2008 at 3:36 AM EDT TORONTO - He'd walk into a bank as calmly as anyone else - no disguise, no mask, no rush. Time never seemed to be of concern. Once, he wore glasses and a blue fleece, standing patiently with his arms folded. Another day, he wore a hoodie and a baseball cap and stood once again, his mouth hanging open. During another, he looked more the role with his black hat, although his face was still uncovered, his glasses clearly identifiable. He'd soon approach the desk. He'd demand cash, threaten the teller and often say he had a gun - although no weapon was ever seen. Sometimes he was given cash; other times he came out empty-handed. But in each case he ran, and got away. And so it continued, since 2003, in some 26 suspected robberies carried out by the exchange bandit. The most recent happened last month, and this week, the Canadian Bankers Association decided that was enough. Enlarge Image (*** See weblink below for photos ***) Security-camera images show the many guises of the suspect sought in 26 bank robberies. Kevin John Pinto of Toronto turned himself in Friday. On Thursday, it offered a $10,000 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the thief, a rare move for the association, said William Crate, its director of security. The problem wasn't the money being stolen, but the staff traumatized by the violent threats, he said. Some required counselling. Bank robbery is first and foremost a personal crime, he said. To draw tips from the public, police released a trio of photos, which ran on television on Thursday evening and in newspapers Friday. The attention seems to have worked. Police received a slew of calls Friday from people who thought they knew who the man was, but they proved unnecessary. On Friday morning, they got a break. A 37-year-old vice-president of a Toronto investment firm walked into a downtown police station, with his lawyer, and turned himself in. A compliance officer with Paradigm Capital in Toronto's financial district, Kevin John Pinto's job was to make sure his company's deals were all within regulation and above-board. On Friday, Mr. Pinto was charged by Toronto police with 10 bank robberies. More charges from other regions are expected, Constable Tony Vella said. Friday night, Paradigm Capital confirmed Mr. Pinto had been an employee since January, 2006. Chief executive officer David Roland said the company found out about the allegations Friday afternoon, suspended Mr. Pinto, began contacting all the regulatory bodies which may need to investigate, while striking up an investigation of its own. This has obviously come as a complete surprise with us, Mr. Roland said in an interview. Paradigm is a Canadian investment dealer with about three dozen employees. Its website lists a series of multimillion-dollar transactions it has handled. In a letter sent to clients last night, Paradigm outlined its response to the charges against Mr. Pinto and said it has no reason to believe that any of its records, securities or client funds have been compromised. The first heists were noted in 2003 in Toronto and Peel region. The next year, police noticed robberies in Kitchener, St. Catharines and Niagara Falls that seemed to share characteristics. The photos of the suspect, actions he took, and what he said to tellers were all similar, although police wouldn't say specifically what they were. No specific banks were repeatedly targeted. Then, in 2005 and 2006, the robberies appear to have stopped. Police don't know why. But in March, 2007, heists bearing the same marks popped up again in Toronto, Cambridge and Oakville. They continued this year, most recently Sept. 12 at a Scotiabank at 44 King St. W., just around the corner from Paradigm's offices at 95 Wellington St. W. The suspect's descriptions, actions and identifiable traits in the recent heists all match the earlier ones, police say. Mr. Pinto spent the night in police custody - a lockup of recently arrested people awaiting a court appearance the next day - while his firm scrambled to alert concerned clients. He's set to appear in court at Old City Hall Saturday morning. (ENDS) http://www.theglobeandmail.com/servlet/story/RTGAM.20081004.wpinto04/BNStory/Front/

Also, since you are obviously referring to the UK Goan Association, does its memorandum prohibit it from acting in the interests of the Community? I would be most interested in proof of that. Thanks Eddie RESPONSE: Dear Eddie, Memorandum's usually specify what the aspirations should be. It would be highly unusual for a nay specific to be mentioned i.e. the Association cannot help Goans. Rather it does mention that the Association can work together with like minded Associations - now I am writing this, without referring to the Constitution, I do not have it at hand. That does not give carte blanche to the Association... blanket cover powers to pursue all and any encompassing help to Goans willy nilly. There are specifics, I suppose, these were based on the workings of the Goan Clubs in East Africa; these Clubs took care of their members first and foremost. Did not take care of the downtrodden, non member Goans. Only famous and noteworthy Goans, llike Seraphino Antao and Manilie Fernandes, the East African Railways and Harbours Chef who cooked for the Queen, were feted. I believe Manilie was a member of the G.I. Nairobi. To further enlighten, as a rule the so called lower rung goans were not allowed to become members; the cooks and Butlers had their own little club; I think it was called the Santa Cruz Club. The Tailors had their own too, called the Tailors' Society Nairobi. The shempdikars had their own called the Goan Gymkhana Nairobi. Upon the death of a G.I. member an amount was paid to the widow. Although my father died in Goa an amount of money was sent to my mother. The general rule which was adhered to strictly, was that the Goan Associations helped their own members and took the interests of their members first. This I believe was what the Goan Association in the U.K. was modeled on, intentionally or otherwise. As you may or may not know, the bulk of the early members of the Goan Associations i.e. London and Toronto, comprised Goans from East Africa. It must be stated though, that the new formed Associations did not carry the caste baggage with them. If my memory serves me correctly, it was mooted that the Goan Association U.K. would hold a function to raise funds to cover what was paid to the Directors, who helped the Goan Seamen. I do not recall any function being held to this effect, seems to me a case of long on rhetoric and short on action. Now before anyone says I should act instead of writing...I'll state that I was a prominent member from the onset and had it not been for my unsecured loan of £25,000 together with two other members, one of £25,000 and another of £5,000 the Goan Association U.K. might well have been foreclosed. Word had reached the Directors that more than one Member who was owed redemption money because of holding a debenture, was ready to approach the Trustees to liquidate the Association. In fact a present Director's name was mentioned as being one of those who favoured closing the Association down, lock stock and barrel. Now my own views on this do not matter, I would follow the Memorandum and Articles strictly, to not do so could invite not only criticism but also non compliance pursuit through the Courts. -- DEV BOREM KORUM. [Goanet] In India: Christians under siege (Basilio G. Monteiro)
In India: Christians under siege By Basilio G. Monteiro [EMAIL PROTECTED] Global economic convulsions, brazen terrorism attacks and all other life-and-death struggles in India and in the rest of the world provide a perfect cover to attack the vulnerable 2% of the Indian population with impunity. With all the problems and issues to be covered in the media, there is not enough space in the newspapers, nor enough time on television to cover the genocide of Christians taking place in India the land of - original harmony -- at the hands of a vociferous fraction of irrational extremists. May be there is also lack of interest to cover these events. The ever-gawking CNN and the BBC, the international media, are too afraid to cover these dastardly stories; the RSS lobby in the USA and in the UK is too powerful and highly efficient to keep off-limits any comments or reaction from the leaders of these countries. It is easy to beat up on a tiny 2% of the population, who do not have any political clout or financial muscle; besides, their religion teaches them not to engage in violence, not to retaliate, but rather to turn the other cheek and to forgive, and to forgive seventy times seven. The confusion about who is who The Catholic and mainline Protestant Churches, such as the Anglican, the Methodist, the Presbyterian, engage in social development by offering education, health and other developmental services. They do not proselytize -- convert -- the people whom they offer their services. Admittedly, they did this in the past; but, for the past half a century or so, these Churches went through a process of self-examination about how to witness and live their faith (certainly not by active proselytization); and should one on one's own volition be interested in inquiring about the Christian faith, it is one's own personal choice. These Churches -- Catholic, Lutheran, Anglican, Methodist, Presbyterian -- have promoted relentlessly, over the centuries, the common good in our country, helped to educate our best minds, formed some of the best Indian citizens, provided health and social wellbeing to millions, without asking for anything in return. They have provided shelter to millions of citizens, who would have otherwise lived like the pariah of the society. The contributions of these Churches to the greater good and the overall development of Mother India have been simply remarkable. Conversion, or reckless proselytization, has surely not been their driving force. It is important to note here that there are Christian fundamentalist churches -- usually the fringe Pentecostal Evangelical Churches -- who, with their irrational zeal, try to proselytize, rather aggressively, whomever they encounter on their path. The Pentecostal Evangelicals descend in a village, 'baptize' their 'recruits', and immediately leave the place. The Catholics and the mainstream Protestant Churches have a permanent residence in the places where they work. Their schools, churches, social work institutions are integral part of the village life. The Evangelical Protestants are so transient that it is not possible to locate their footprints. The Catholics, the Lutherans, Anglicans, Presbyterians are the ones who take the brunt of the ire of the local fanatics. Besides, the Pentecostal Evangelicals consider that Catholics are anti-Christ, who need 'conversion'. The ill-informed and already highly jaundiced groups of RSS and Bajrang Dal as well as other fanatic groups cannot and do not know to distinguish between those Christians who do not proselytize, and those who shove the Bible down people's throats. Fanatics, particularly the militants -- whether Christians, Hindus, Muslims or others -- draw their birth as well as growth charts under the shadow of an exploitative leader, who capitalizes on their ignorance and their disposition for blind servitude, which, in turn, gives them a sense of usefulness and worth. It is an old trick, which unfortunately works, to use religion to whip up nationalism; even Christians have used it in the past. The business of education: a source of tension Another reason for tension in some of these places is the 'business' of education. Christians, by and large, run first-rate educational institutions. Some individuals in local communities think that education is a good business to get into; they open schools and do not succeed. Students continue to flock to the schools run by Christians, because they and their parents realize that these schools offer a degree of excellence that helps them to build a better future for themselves. Local educational entrepreneurs find it difficult to compete with those who educate with a difference. Every year Christian schools in India, by some accounts, educate fifteen

Re: [Goanet] Goanet Moderation
Hi Gilbert Thank you for indicating that brief reasons for post rejections by Goanet moderators would be helpful when they are deemed inappropriate. That is indeed all critics of Goanet moderation have been asking for since Jan/Feb 2008. I am glad you have noted this point and responded to it even if through satire! Hopefully, at long last, the moderators will take note of your 'wisdom' below! Alternatively, they could have a rule saying that no reasons will be provided--then at least, posters would know where they stand and choose whether to contribute to Goanet or not. I for one was invited to join Goanet as a contributor and subsequently told more than once that I had much to offer by none other than Bosco and Frederick themselves. Perhaps Boso in particular can now expound on his current vacuous view that hell hath no fury like a poster scorned. I emphasise that, I didn't barge into Goanet and at one point when I indicated withdrawal from Goanet over a fiasco from the Gulf, both Bosco and Frederick 'begged' me not to do so as it would not be in Goanet's interests to do so. [Goanet] HINDUTVA AND CONVERSIONS
For favour of publication. =Averthanus= _ HINDUTVA AND CONVERSIONS. Averthanus L. D'Souza. During the tenure of Atal Behari Vajpayee as Prime Minister of India, there was an unprovoked and brutal assault against Christians in the Dangs District of Gujarat. This caused an international uproar of protests which resulted in Vajpayee visiting the area. He neither condemned the atrocities against the Christians, nor did he offer any words of comfort to those who had been gravely injured. Instead, on January 10th, 1999 Vajpayee called for a national debate on conversions. Such a national debate has neither been convened, nor has the violence against Christians subsided. On the contrary, the unprovoked and senseless attacks against Christians has shown an intensification, specially in those States where the BJP is in power, or where it wields considerable influence as a coalition partner. The call for a national debate on conversions made by Vajpayee was too belated, because fifty years earlier such a debate had already taken place in the Constituent Assembly. The consensus of this debate found expression in Article 25 of the Constitution of India which guarantees to every citizen of this country the right to religious freedom. It is precisely this right to religious freedom which is under vicious attack by the Sangh Parivar and its political arm the BJP. Each time that there is a systematic and brutal attack against Christians or Muslims, the RSS affiliates - such as the Hindu Jagran Manch, the VHP, the Bajrang Dal and other outfits - attempt to justify their inexcusable actions on the ground that they have attacked only because there have been mass conversions obtained by material inducements, fraud or coercion. If such fraudulent conversions had, in fact, taken place, the proper, decent and civilized procedure would have been to report such conversions to the police and to initiate legal proceedings under the Law, which has adequate provisions to punish the perpetrators of such fraudulent conversions. In fact, after every such attack, when Commissions of Enquiry were constituted, not a single case of forced or fraudulent conversion has been recorded. Over the years, it has become amply clear that the attacks against the religious minorities has been motivated not by any concern for the violation of the Law, but, rather, by a prejudiced and totally untenable ideological opposition to all religions which are non-Hindu. The obsession of the Hindutva brigade with conversions needs to be looked at more closely. Is it true that the Hindutva proponents are opposed in principle to all conversions? Is it true that they are opposed to mass conversions? If the Sangh Parivar is opposed to mass conversions then it is standing against its own recorded traditions of Hinduism being a missionary religion. In his book The Hindu View of Life (George, Allen and Unwin, London, 1927). Dr. S. Radhakrishnan establishes how the missionary impulse very early led to the absorption of whole tribes into Hinduism. In this sense, Hinduism may be regarded as the first example in the world of a missionary religion. R.C. Majumdar (Hindu Colonies in the Far East, Firma, Kolkatta, 1963) tells the story of mass conversions to Hinduism of entire tribes from as far as Cambodia and through the Malayan archipelago to Bali and Borneo. Even from ancient times, Hinduism has been a missionary religion. History records that Emperor Asoka sent out his missionaries to preach the message of Buddha throughout the world. One stream of Buddhism which went southward and eastward converted entire peoples up to Ceylon (present day Sri Lanka) and Burma (present Myanmar), Thailand, Indonesia and Cambodia; and another stream proceeded northward through Tibet and China and even to Japan. The modern Hindu missionary movement can be traced to the foundation of the Vedanta Society in New York in 1893 by Swami Vivekananda, after his famous address to the World Parliament of Religions in Chicago. This was followed by several Hindu Centres being established by the Ramakrishna Mission, the Arya Samaj, the Chinmayananda mission, the Krishna Consciousness movement as well as some peripheral movements such as the Transcendental Meditation movement, and others like the questionable enterprise of Acharya Sri Rajneesh, who brought disgrace to Hinduism and was thrown out of the U.S.A. For the Hindutva protagonists to assert that Hinduism is against all proselytization, is, therefore, patently false. It flies in the face of ancient and modern history. Moreover, it contradicts its own missionary activities, such as the establishment of the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (the World Hindu Council) with a view to creating an international control centre for the spread of Hindutva all over the globe. The argument against

No, not on your nelly dear Aunty... The Mamai Kamat mansion antecedates the Palácio do Hidalcao by a few decades. It was using that established fact that their advocate, Dr. Redualdo da Costa, won the Mamais their milestone case, in Portugal. The Mamais habeen decreed that a portion of their house should be demolished to enable Óbras Públicas to widen the narrow neck separating the two mansions. Redualdo argued in court that as his clients' house already stood before the other, it was Adil Shah's lack of farsight that were the cause for our contemporary traffic-woes. The bailout package has additional legislation that includes promotion of clean energy in the US. It all depends upon how severe this downturn will be - bad or very bad. To make this very simple, think of the US dollar as a tomato. When there is excess supply, the price goes down. When the US dollar goes down, imports become more expensive. More expensive goods from China will cause inflation. Think of gold too as a tomato. The price fell when central banks flooded the markets with gold. They sold low and used the cash to buy US treasuries which were yielding six per cent (vs nothing for holding gold) then. Now that US treasuries are yielding less than the US inflation rate, central banks are selling their US treasuries and buying gold. Last year, China became the biggest gold producer in the world. South Africa held that position for 100 years. China has just allowed its citizens to hold bullion. Believe it or not, the perfect storm is just beginning! The following was sent to me as a joke. My in-laws did not think it was funny. If we spend that money at Wal-Mart, the money goes to China . If we spend it on gasoline it goes to the Arabs. If we buy a computer it will go to India. If we purchase fruit and vegetables it will go to Mexico, Honduras and Guatemala. If we purchase a good car it will go to Germany. If we purchase useless crap it will go to Taiwan and none of it will help the American economy. [Goanet] India's outsourcing bubble is bursting
Date: Sun, 5 Oct 2008 00:30:16 -0400 From: MD\Mello [EMAIL PROTECTED] Barack Obama intends to implement a 21st century economic agenda to help ensure that America can compete in a global economy, and ensure the middle class is thriving and growing. He will increase investments in infrastructure (which is falling behind, it's nuclear reactors are becoming old). Nuclear plants, wind produce environmentally clean energy, reduce dependence on foreign oil, improve education, research and development; modernize and simplify tax code that provides greater opportunity and relief to more Americans; He intends to mplement trade policies that benefit American workers and increase the export of American goods. Mario asks: MD, Since Obama has never done any of these things before, how do you decide whether to believe him or not? Do you work for the Obama campaign? Do you have any idea what his background and experience is? MD writes: Before the war in Iraq ever started, Senator Obama said that it was wrong in its conception. In 2002, then Illinois State Senator Obama said Saddam Hussein posed no imminent threat to the United States and that invasion would lead to an occupation of undetermined length, at undetermined cost, with undetermined consequences. Since then, Senator Obama has laid out a plan on the way forward in Iraq that has largely been affirmed by the bipartisan Iraq Study Group led by James Baker and Lee Hamilton. Mario asks: MD, what do you have against the innocent Iraqi people? What have they ever done to you? Did you prefer what Iraq was like under Saddam Hussein? Did you ever hear of all those mas graves? Do you know why the UN imposed no-fly zones in Iraq? Did you ever hear of the 17 UN resolutions that Saddam never complied with and the sanctions that the UN imposed on Iraq? I wonder why they did that. Do you have any idea what Saddam did between 1990 and 2003? MD writes: Just imagine the amount America has so far spent on Iraq, despite all that the absolute winner is Iran, as Shia majority that is ruling Iraq, has more loyalty to fellow Shia Iran, the invasion induced Al-Qaida to establish in Iraq, the Sunnis are given incentives to contain violence, and even Hezbollah has become part of the Lebanese government. The money saved from Iraq will help American domestic economy. Mario asks: So, it is the money you are concerned about, and not the tyranny that the Iraqi people were subjected to, not to mention the menace to the entire region? I guess this means we need to count our money before we go rescue someone being subjected to tyranny. No wonder we see so many people being brutalized in Africa - no one is willing to spend the money to help them, except that America has pledged to spend 63 BILLION dollars to help them fight HIV/AIDS, TB, and malaria. Just imagine what Iraq would have been like if, after Saddam's heavy and brutal heel had been removed from their necks, the Iraqis would have decided to reject Al Qaeda and worked together, with American sid, to reconstruct their country and live in peace and harmony, just like the citizens of Italy, Germany and Japan did after WW-II? MD writes: India's domestic economy is flourishing so much, it does not even has to look out for export. In fact when they controlled export of rice, the price went up in no timein Canada! and consumers began hoarding rice! In fact I heard quite a few Americans are working in Bangalore! Finally it is not so easy to abruptly stop the already outsourced jobs, as the cost of relocating them back to USA may be prohibitive. Mario responds: India's outsourcing bubble is bursting By Saritha Rai, silicon.com Excerpt: Bangalore, India--Once a high-flying tech hub, Bangalore is seeing more sober days in the wake of the credit crisis. It looks like the global economic turmoil and the dramatic Wall Street meltdown is beginning to hit Bangalore. MD writes: Without prejudice and information obtained from the world Wide Web. Mario responds: Oh, really? Nice try, MD. I know I was born at night, but it was not last night:-))

We now have a Goan version of Jesse James, in socialist Canada no less, a Vice President at an investment dealer whose job was to police his own company's transactions. Then he turns himself in. Strange, indeed. Were they closing in on him, or did he experience a pang of conscience? Well, he will probably now end up an extended guest of the Canadian penal system with a comfortable place to live and three square meals a day at taxpayer expense:-)) Then he can go to confession and become a multi millionaire by writing a book about his fall and redemption complete with scenes of Calangute with violins and guitars in the background. Re: [Goanet] Goanet Moderation
Hi Mervyn, Goanet moderators advise posters who aim to be amusing to use a smiley :=)). I do not see that in your alleged non-provocative posts that you label as amusing +/- having crossed the line. As far as Goan posts without the :=)) being amusing, I assumed that the author of those post was a 'Goan on steroids'.:=)) If one retorts with similar words / explanation, then he / she needs a screw-driver to adjust their 'humor button'. This advice is also directed to some posters who have a compulsory need to respond to posts which they imagine is directed to them. The good news is their reply suggest they took the message personally. I like your idea of 'special treatment' to the serial offenders. Can you imagine the poor moderators have to repeatedly read their posts? I can only call that pirachit / penance. No wonder the moderators get a 'thought block' and cannot respond with a one-liner. Likely the moderators go for the feni or scotch after reading those posts. Glad none of the 'sensitive' posters, on receiving the many rejections of inappropriate posts, have not resorted to something more drastic; like - taking a bucket of cold water and dipping their head three times and taking it out twice.:=)). Looking at the support the disgruntled posters received, it appears they are not getting much credibility. Yet, they have only themselves to blame. For a time, they felt they were making cumulative headway. But their difficult-to-prove stories was their undoing, in addition to their suggestion that they were 'God's gift to Goanet' - which they may be.:=)) Regards, GL - Mervyn Lobo I am on Goanet for only one reason: To learn. I think that life is to short to go around antagonizing people. I certainly do not want to be a provoker. May be in trying to amuse, I have crossed the line. However, I think people would inform me when that happens. There are serial / repeat offenders here. All you have to do is tell them to clean up their act or the moderators will do so. It is a pity that three or four posters have to consume most of the moderators time. -- Bosco wrote: Question: Are you implying that you do not write to Goanet to antagonize and provoke fellow Goanetters?
Re: [Goanet] Goanet Top Posters (2004/July)
Mario Goveia wrote? 2004 was before Goanet started getting the benefit of my perspicacity, wit and wisdom as the only TRUE and never humble messenger of peace, truth and love:-)) Mario, You ARE getting terribly confused. When you first came on to GoaNet in 2004, I clearly remember advising you to buy gold. I remember this as I was mostly in San Jose, CA and we were emailing each other ten times a day. Fortunately, for me, my current wife DID buy gold then. This resulted in her choosing to live wherever she wanted. I suggested that she buy a house as far away from the zoo as possible. Look how the quality and diversity of the debate on Goanet has improved - to the point that it is driving Herman and Bosco nuts trying to keep everyone in check and imposing their selective, autocratic will, especially on the 3 - 4 posters he keeps referring to, which excludes Santosh whom they seem afraid of:-)) Do not worry about the 3-4 posters (or is it the 4-3 posters?). It has nothing to do with you. Life is easy when it is not subjected to reality. Mervyn3.0 __ Looking for the perfect gift? Give the gift of Flickr! http://www.flickr.com/gift/
Re: [Goanet] Scientific literacy
On Sun, Oct 5, 2008 at 3:48 AM, Fr. Ivo C da Souza [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: When I said that I do not understand his logic means that he is not answering the problem raised by the phenomenon. The above reveals the crux of the lack of understanding that I have been talking about - the inability to recognize that there is no real problem or reality-based phenomenon of any kind here. That there is nothing here that needs to be explained from the scientific standpoint, or from the standpoint of billions of people who do not share Fr. Ivo's particular beliefs. Most people know that it is wrong and foolish to misuse one's limited understanding of science to try to justify the parochial beliefs of one's own supernatural ideology, an ideology that in today's secular and pluralistic world is regarded as equivalent in form to, but distinct in content from, hundreds of alternative supernatural ideologies. As for why any student of science would find nothing problematic about detecting remnants of human tissue and body fluids (discounting the fact that in the case in question, it was done with outdated and poorly conducted tests), the reason is obvious. Human tissues and body fluids can be easily obtained from dead human beings. As for why theological writings, historical documentation, eyewitness testimony and mythological anecdotes cannot be regarded as scientific evidence, here are a few of the reasons again: 1. All people make mistakes. 2. People are capable of deception and self-deception. 3. People have been known to commit pious fraud. 4. Ancient people lacked basic scientific understanding. Cheers, Santosh

One of these days, I will get around to writing about the Goans in Tanganyika who went from being Portuguese to Tanganyikans to Indians in a period of two weeks. [Goanet] Brain cells begin a workout
Goa's aviation imbroglio seems to be grabbing the attention of some thought leaders in the industry. Robey Lal is the former Country Manager of IATA. http://economictimes.indiatimes.com/usrmailcomment.cms?msid=3559253[EMAIL PROTECTED]mailon_commented=1Goa airport needs urgent expansion Philip Thomas,Goa,says:When will AAI realise that its mission at Dabolim airport in Goa is not to razzle dazzle all and sundry but to survive against insidious pressures to close it, whether by design (a la the Union Cabinet Resolution of 2000) or, even more dangerously, by default (through bull-in-the-china-shop decisions of well meaning politicians) and the stealth manoeuvres of its military 'host'? It should concentrate its energies on getting another airport in Goa right viz which does not defeat the above purpose. 5 Oct 2008, 0948 hrs IST Robey Lal,New Delhi, says:Construction of a new airport, on a PPP basis, for serving commercial air traffic, should be top priority for the Government of Goa. It is hightime that local interests stopped haggling over the site, North or South Goa. Either location will help the economy, albeit some more than others. Alternately, not having the airport will not help anyone. Meanwhile, at the existing airport the Navy must instructed by the Central Government to provide the ATC and Safety services for keeping the airport open to civil air traffic round the clock, till the new airport is commissioned. And AAI should keep terminal services running 24x7. These will make more time slots available for flights to operate to Goa, thus increasing airport capacity by better use of the terminal and apron, since neither of them have the requisite area to expand in for any long term benefit, and a new airport will again be the call of the day in a few years. AAI provided Goa airport with Aeronautical Ground Lighting and navigational aids and safety equipment to operate 24 hours following an understanding reached with the Navy over 10 years ago, which the Navy ought to Honour. 5 Oct 2008, 0750 hrs IST Its debatable however whether Robey Lal's idea of 'either location ' or keeping Dabolim civil enclave open round the clock, 'till the new airport is commissioned' is meaningful in the Goa context. Goa government has opted for both airports. Lal's view may be coloured by being wedded to PPP as seen above. In this connection it must be pointed out that the present IATA chief himself takes a dim view of the experience with PPP in airports. The problems at Bangalore and Hyderabad (and to a lesser extent at Kochi where it all started in India) are there for all to see. But Lal does seem to echo our Rajya Sabha member Shantaram Naik's unhappiness with the Indian Navy's attitude at Dabolim. _ Search for videos of Bollywood, Hollywood, Mollywood and every other wood, only on Live.com http://www.live.com/?scope=videoform=MICOAL
