My Dear Friend Arwin bab

Through News paper reports of major Goan dailies you all are aware what is
happening in your beautiful village of Carmona and the state of Goa at
large.

Since the year 2008, we Carmonakars have lodged a sustained battle with the
authorities in Goa to protect our mother land from the clutches of the land
sharks. If land sharks such as the Raheja’s of Mumbai fame are allowed to
set mega housing projects meant as second homes for the neo-rich from
outside the state there will be no land left for our future generations. As
it is with one mega deal by the Raheja’s in our village the land prices has
soared to astronomical figures thereby eroding the purchasing power of every
Carmonkar whether he is working in Goa, the gulf or the luxury liners. The
basic infrastructure of water, electricity, garbage disposal and sewerage at
present are so dismal that our living will be made impossible by these mega
projects.

Our revolt against the mighty Raheja’s in Carmona has awakened many Goan
villages from the deep slumber and today each and every gramsabha in goan
villages are questioning the Sarpanchas and authorities on the issue.

But our own elected representative such as MLA’s and Panchayat members blinded
by short term personal greed are supporting these mega projects by outside
builders. The same has happened in Carmona. Recently at the gramsabha
meeting held on 20/12/2009 the people of Carmona has passed a resolution and
told the Sarpanch to call back the file of the Raheja’s.

But our sarpanch and the balance group of five who have sold themselves to
the bread loaves offered by the Raheja’s are in no mood to listen to the
voices of the people.

At the behest of our local MLA the town and country planning department has
issued a provisional NOC to the builder which will be ratified by our
panchayat in its meeting to be held on 13/01/2010 to issue license to The
Raheja’s.

The action of the Town and country planning department and the Panchayat to
issue the provisional NOC is nothing but a fraud. As per circular dated
29.08.2008 the builder has to show the actual width of the existing access
road at site. The said circular says that no NOC should be issued based on
proposed road/ broadening. I enclose a copy of the said circular for your
perusal.

Many likeminded people from the village are of the opinion that this fraud
has to be challenged in the high court and have promised support. We have
contacted lawyers and has taken opinion and are told that it is fit case to
permanently block the Raheja’s and also to give fiting reply to our local
MLA and the Panchas supporting the builder.

Our estimate runs in a few lakhs of rupees to match against the mighty
Raheja’s. But we count on support of all our dear brothers and sisters
working in far away countries and are hoping to return our sweet home after
retirement.

Please circulate this appeal to all blue blooded Goans to spare a few
ruppess from their hard earned incomes to save our mother land from the
hungry volves.

Thank you very much,

On behalf of the People of Tamdeg and Carmona at large.

[Goanet] Mapusa cries for development

Mapusa cries for development
Written by ERWIN FONSECA
Friday, 22 January 2010 01:15

MAPUSA: Mapusa, whose municipal market completed 50 years of its existence, has
slipped into a chaotic city. The ills of civic life have taken a toll on the
once well-planned city. And in the rough and tumble of politics and
administration, the city fathers have forgotten to celebrate the golden jubilee
of the municipal market.

The golden jubilee of one of the oldest markets of Goa has gone practically
unsung. Neither the Mapusa municipal council chairperson, the councilors nor
the Mapusa MLA realised that the Mapusa market completed 50th years and it was
a time to organise some events to mark the occasion.
It was in January, 1960 that the last Governor of Portuguese-ruled Goa, General
Manuel Antonio Vassalo E Silva had inaugurated the municipal market. It was a
well-planned market with ample place in-between and shops constructed were in
an orderly manner.
Old-timers recalled that the Portuguese officials would regularly monitor the
market and see that hygiene, discipline and order were maintained in the
market. It was due to these efforts that Mapusa soon became popular worldwide
for its Friday market as a lot of local produce would find its place in Mapusa.
The once famous Mapusa market today is besotted by disorder in the city. The
ills of civic life have raised their ugly head in the city. Parking woes, bad
roads, garbage, choked drains, stinking nullah have created chaos in Mapusa.
The infrastructure of the market has completely deteriorated and no concerted
efforts seem to be made for improving the city.
The work for the vegetable market has been incomplete for the last four years.
There do not seem to be any signs that the fish market, which had been
demolished for being in a bad state, will turn around soon.  There is no decent
hall which could help encourage the young artistes of Mapusa, though efforts
are now on to construct a Ravindra Bhawan.
Even the parks and gardens are badly maintained as is evident from the fact
that most parks and gardens in Mapusa wear a near isolated look.
Indiscipline among vendors and lack of market management is further putting
Mapusa in bad light not only among the locals but even among the tourists.
Except for the early councillors who were determined to keep an order in the
city, the subsequent elected representatives, chief officers and bureaucrats
failed miserably in making Mapusa a good city.
The Mapusa MLA, Mr Francis D’Souza admitted that as an MLA he was also to be
blamed for the mess of Mapusa as he is still struggling to give good roads and
water to his people, but also blamed his councillors.
“Councillors from time to time ignore Mapusa and get involved in petty politics
for personal gains. What is required is proper management of Mapusa market
resources and decongestion of the market,” he said. Mr D’Souza claimed that
when he was MMC chairperson he had made a lot of efforts, including
construction of 400 shops in the city, that could decongest the market.
On the other hand, the MMC chairperson, Ms Rupa Bhakta said, “Ever since I took
over a year back I have tried to do whatever I could.   However, it will
require some time for Mapusa to regain its lost glory. I am definitely working
for the improvement of Mapusa.”
She said the possibility of celebrating 50 years of the city market in the
immediate future could not be ruled out as that would be a very good occasion
for seeking more government help.”
Mr Vengurlekar, a prominent businessman of Mapusa who has been in the business
in Mapusa since Portuguese regime reminisced, “There was hygiene, cleanliness
and order in Mapusa then. The Portuguese rulers were quite concerned about the
maintenance of the market.”
The residents of Mapusa are complaining about the rampant constructions coming
up and choking the city in the midst of the sewage problem and water scarcity.
Without mincing his words, Mr Ratnapal Salkar of the Mapusa Citizens Forum
said, “Some villages around Mapusa are much better than Mapusa, a major
commercial city of North Goa. If Mapusa, which was once a very good city, is a
very bad city today then it is our misfortune.”
He said that Mapusa is decaying and the stinking nullah in front of the fish
market is proof of this. Our elected representatives from Mapusa have only
one-point agenda:  converting Mapusa into a concrete jungle.

[Goanet] NRGS and RGS

2010-01-22 Thread manuel tavares
I have a mathematical solution to this problem RG +NRG+ WHATEVER G's YOU HAVE,
the common factor is The G. G stands out above all the rest of the attributes
that can be added. Therefore let us not forget that whatever G we are, we are
Goans first, and all of us who have the interest of Goa and who care to express
our emotional desire to save Goa are doing so in whatever way we can on the
NET. The most powerful tool we have is communication letting our brothers and
sisters in Goa know that we care and that we are ready to help in whatever way
we can to further the cause of Saving Goa. Let us not fight within ourselves,
after all, we all have a common goal and we should not stray from that goal due
to petty differences. Remember that there are varying routes to success and no
one is sure that his or her route is the only means to success. United we will
stand and petty differences will only lead to failure and that is not our goal.
Therefore let us rise with one voice and lead Goa to a triumphant rejuvenation
free of corruption and full of hope.

Nisser Dias in his post of Jan 21 gives a pertinant analysis of the type of

I must, however, disagree with him on one score. He claims that Chief Minister

soul to sell? I thought that he had made a pact with "Soitan" a long time back
and that it is therefore the devil himself personified in the body of Digombar.
Correct me if I am wrong.

A friend forwarded me this joke. I thought it was kind of apt, in light of
one of the current debates raging on GoaNet. I edited it a bit, to
downgrade its rating from NC-17 to PG-13.

It was the first day at a school in the United States. A new Indian
student named Chandrasekhar Subramanian entered the fourth grade.

The teacher said, "Let's begin by reviewing some American history. Who
said 'Give me liberty, or give me death?'

She saw a sea of blank faces, except for Chandrasekhar, who had his hand
up "Patrick Henry, 1775" He said.

[Goanet] Corrpupt Sarpanch hoodwinking Gram Sabha

2010-01-22 Thread A C Fernandes
In a clear and very obvious attempt to hoodwink the Gram Sabha
members, it is now becoming apparent that some Sarpanch and Panchayat
members have sought to subvert the wishes of teh Gram Panchayat
members by passing fake Regional Plans. This is now coming to light.

This is sheer deceit and fraud that is being committed to further the
interests of the builders and of course there are big kickbacks from
this. This is from the Herald below.

Suspension of Loutolim Sarpanch demanded

HERALD REPORTER

MARGAO, JAN 22

A member of the Loutolim Village Level Committee, Franky Monteiro has
demanded the immediate suspension of the village Sarpanch by the
authorities and seizure of panchayat records by the police pending
further investigations on the fake RP 2021 submitted to the Town and
Country Planning Department.

Monteiro further demanded stringent action against the village
panchayat secretary for being a mute spectator and being a party to
the illegalities.

In a statement, Monteiro said the villagers and members of the Village
Level Committee and amused and disturbed with the varied statements of
the Sarpanch and secretary and are now looking forward to further
action being initiated by the police in the matter, adding the people
will then know who are the actual people behind this regional plan
scam and their motives.
Monteiro claimed that the Sarpanch has made an about turn from his
earlier statement that the signature appearing on the forwarding
letter and plan was not his and the same was forged.
“The Sarpanch has informed the police that the plan was not prepared
by him but by some panchayat members and villagers who had submitted
objections to the proposed draft RP 2021 earlier prepared and
submitted by the Village Level Committee”, he claimed.

Interestingly, Monteiro said the Panchayat secretary in turn has
washed his hands over the issue stating that he was not aware of the
preparation or the submission of the mysterious plan by the Sarpanch .

Every mother is aware that her responsibility to her child does not end
when the baby
leaves her womb. Every mother will want to love, nourish and protect
her off-spring
from harm for the rest of her life.

I see no difference between the mother that aborts her baby in the first
semester or
the mother that abandons her baby as soon as it is born.

I also see no difference between the mother that abandons her new born or the
mother
that abandons her 18 year old, just because the child has reached legal age.

Finally, I the worst disdain I have is towards the mother that allows her child
to join any
organization whose main purpose is to kill other human beings.

When the guardians of the games starts damaging it, what will be the future of
the game – is a matter to worry and not to sympathize alone.

We are talking about A.CI.F. – the Federation whose Delhi Unit (DCA) Secretary
Bharat Singh did not permit 400 players to
participate in the Parsvnath Chess Tournament– which is a
breach of Fundamental Right of the players, for which AICF & DCA
officials are not only responsible, but also punishable under the law of the
country.
Also they are financially liable to these players and there is no
justification for the Govt.grant also for this tournament, for
which entry fee was as high as Rs. 7800

The only fault of these players was that they participated in
the biggest ever prize money tournament of India with the lowest entry
fee of Rs. 1000 , organized by Chess Association of India, who have not
taken any permission from the AICF. Even otherwise, as per Constitution of
India, to
organize such prize money tournament is neither crime nor essential to
take the permission of AICF, to whom, CAI would have to spare Rs. 3
lakhs for getting the permission.

Bharat Singh used all his available tools to harass the organisers, sponsors,
coaches, parents, workers and reputed players of Delhinot to
participate to avoid ban and suspension. Still the inevitable
tournament happened with 400 participants and players received prizes
more than Rs. 15 lakhs.

Surprisingly, DCA is holding Parsvnath tournaments for the last 7 years, but
still
one has to see or know its President (or it is on the paper alone).
Bharat Singh is also the Treasurer of AICF. If we talk about other
officials of AICF, its President, Mr. Srinivasan is holding two posts in
contravention of National Sports Policy and Sports Ministry
Guidelines. Its General Secretary DV Sunder and Commonwealth
Secretary Dongre are on bail today.

To harass the players has become a routine matter for AICF, then, it may
be GM Gopal or World No. 2 Humpy Konery. If you talk of Rules with
AICF, surprisingly as on date, its Constitution and Rules are not
approved and pending with the Registrar of Societies, Chennai, and a
gazette notification was issued earlier for withdrawal from the Role of
SocietiesNo.
4993/EI/2005 dated 7.12.2005.

Even the CIC decision dated 20.3.2009 to bring AICF under the
RTI was not implemented by AIC upto the deadline of 20thApril, 2009
Surprizingly, the Sports Ministry, who is aware of all these facts, is
releasing Grants year-after-year, without checking out the eligibility
conditions of the applicant.

One of the ills of Goa cited by some crazed NRGs is mining.

Point is nobody was complaining when mining was the mainstay of industry in
Goa. When jobs were few and scarce. Then, every one wanted a share of the
pie. Jobs, contracts, licenses. and the lot

Illegal mining is another story altogether.

What I am trying to say is that if you condemn mining, condemn illegal
mining.

Now I am sure (you and) I will be treated to a lecture on how to stop
illegal mining by our resident armchair solution finder aka voice of truth,

[Goanet] Goanet Reader: A historical novel looking at what happened after 1510 (and more): Love and Samsara

2010-01-22 Thread Goanet Reader
A HISTORICAL NOVEL LOOKING AT WHAT HAPPENED AFTER 1510 (AND MORE):
LOVE AND SAMSARA

LOVE AND SAMSARA
By Eusebio L. Rodrigues
New Academia Publishing, USA 2007
611 pp. Price not listed

Love and Samsara is a historical novel set in the
sixteenth century. It explores the consequences of
the discovery by Vasco da Gama of the sea route
  from Europe to India.

The importance of this discovery is a subject of revision
since the fifties; the quinquennial celebrations of his
landing in Calicut were politically incorrect and had to be
abandoned. The discovery did initiate the era of imperialism;
its end and the decline of Eurocentrism, have prompted
studies for a balanced and nuanced assessment.

These take into account the socio-economic and cultural
implications of the encounters between West and East and the
changes that affected the lives of the Indian subcontinent
and of the communities on the periphery of the Indian Ocean.

The scholar and historian, Ashin Das Gupta (1922-1998) in
follow up of Fernand Braudel's studies of the Mediterranean,
has revealed the distinctive society of trading families and
interactions of merchants in the Indian Ocean from Malabar to
Surat that transcended the political boundaries of the
hinterland states.

Another important consequence that changed the life
of the region was the establishment of the
sea-borne Portuguese empire, a unique exercise of
sovereign power from control points around the
  seas.

In the first half of the sixteenth century, Portuguese India
-- the Estado da India of Goa, Daman, and Diu -- with Goa as
capital, radiated from seaports in Asia and Africa. Though
geographically inchoate in terms of land mass, yet it
controlled the vast expanse of the Indian Ocean. Sanjay
Subramanian and Luis Filipe Thomas refer to its operations
from "a complex of territories, establishments, goods,
persons, and administrative interests in Asia and East Africa".

There were cultural implications. Prior to the invasive
nature of culture and religion by the Portuguese in the wake
of the discovery, there prevailed in the region of the Indian
Ocean a harmonization of Buddhist and Jain influences
transmitted in cultural and trade exchanges in the Arab
controlled routes through Asia and Africa into Europe.

An exemplar is the Arabian Nights a collection of stories,
whose tales of Sindbad the Sailor, Aladdin, and Ali Baba, a
part of Western folklore. are set in a timeless universe.

Did Vasco da Gama herald a culture of violence,
proselytisation, and power that vitiated the
cultural homogeneity and delicate balance of
  Indo-Islamic civilization? Did the Judeo-Christian
concept of time and history introduce reality into
the ocean of illusion? These issues are debated and
discussed in 'Love and Samsara', the author Eusebio
Rodrigues holding forth in an array of historical
characters and personalities, that are given body
and voice in events that were turning points in the
lives of communities and countries that fringed the
  Indian Ocean.

The personal story of the protagonist,Ahmad ibn Majid, the
Arab master navigator who showed Vasco da Gama the sea route
to India is set within this frame. Was he a traitor, an Arab
Muslim paving the way to the destruction of Islamic
civilization in the East?

Guilt ridden, he consoles himself with the reflection that he
was merely performing his duty, a professional service paid
for strictly by the scheduled rates. But it is his world that
is on the brink of destruction. "The circle of my universe,"
says Ahmad "began at Sofala in East Africa, and went on to
Mogadishu, to Aden, to Hormuz, around to Diu, to Chaul and to
Calicut in India, and then to the region that stretches below
the wind, the worlds of cinnamon and cloves that lies beyond
Cape Comorin, and ends at Melaka".

Camões in his epic poem of that time, The Lusiads,
does not specify the nationality of the navigator
that showed da Gama the sea route to India, but
places him in Malinda near Mombasa in East Africa,
referring to an act of friendship by the Sultan who
is. grateful for the help of the Portuguese in
  battling the neighboring principalities, in
offering his master navigator to Vasco da Gama.
Some historians make the navigator a Gujerati Hindu
who knew the monsoon routes, an interpretation
consistent with Hindu resistance seeking allies
against Muslim invaders. Rodrigues however uses the
historic figure to give significance to the
  narrative and the plot.

Historically the objective of the sea route to India was to
destroy Islamic power. The Portuguese did come to India, in
the words of Vasco da Gama, for spices and souls; both
economics and religio

[Goanet] Goanet Reader: Keeping track of time (Frederick Noronha)

2010-01-22 Thread Goanet Reader
THE PRINTED WORD/Frederick Noronha
--

KEEPING TRACK OF TIME

When we talk of the "printed word", we usually assume that it
has to necessarily be related to the world of books. Though
we're already well into January, it is perhaps still timely
to focus on another form of the printed word in Goa that
plays an important role in the lives of the commonman.

(Maybe 'commonman' is a wrong word here, because such
products are as -- if not more important -- to women here.)

I'm referring to the varied calendars that come out
just before the year end. These have been a long
tradition in Goa, spanning many decades, if not
  longer.

In the past, they used to be called 'almanacs'. Now, in
keeping with the changing times, and changing linguistic
preferences, you could probably find a 'deendarshak' or a
'varshik panchang'. It means very much the same thing -- a
kind of detailed calendar, that goes beyond just giving you
the basic information about what date falls on which day of
the week.

Such calendars also include phases of the moon, details of
the Hindu lunar calendar and other popularly followed
calendars, maybe sunrise and sunset times too (did you know
the sun rises after 7 am in Goa these days?), Hindu
festivals, Christian feasts, and Muslim festive and holy days.

There are also a few advertisements and photographs of Goa.
Unlike the 'Kalnirnay' calendar that covers Maharashtra in
detail, these Goa-focussed calendars are less ambitious, and
don't carry recipes or household tips on one side of the
calendar... as Jayraj Salgaonkar-published Kalnirnay does.
[See http://www.kalnirnay.com/beta/kal_user/home.php for a
web-based version of the Kalnirnay.]

Before me, I have two calendars, the 'Goa Calendar'
and 'Deendarshak Goa 2010', both available at the
end of each year from the Bhate Brother's Varsha
Book Stall, next to the Azad Maidan in Panjim, and
other news-stands across the State around the end
  of each calendar year.

I think these calendars play a useful role in informing us
about what's happening where in this small region. Otherwise,
even newspapers don't adequately cover the fairs and
festivities -- that are, really, such an important part of
society's life here.

Each calendar is priced at Rs 20, and the Goa Calendar is in
English, while the 'Deendarshak' is a mix of Marathi and
English. For anyone who studied a little bit of Marathi or
Devanagari Konkani in school, it's not too tough to follow
what is being listed in the calendar.

There have been other calendar initiatives in Goa
too. Earlier this decade, I wrote about the
'Almanac de Parade', brought out as a valiant
venture by an elderly lady from Margao. My Dutch
friend Patrice Riemens treats these as a
collector's item, and often requests me to send
across a copy -- which I often fail to do!

'Almanac de Parede' is a kind of a 'wall calendar' that has
completed a quiet centenary of its publication from Margao.
If Patrice had not to remind me, I would have not even
realised this unusual century!

"Almanac de Parede is basically a double A3 piece of paper,
printed black and white, very traditional. The AdP listing
all saints' (days) and all feasts in all Goan churches in all
districts and some postal (and other) info. It is available
in Margao may be less outside," explains Patrice Reimens, who
is an Amsterdam-based researcher curious about encountering
varied cultures across the globe, including Goa.

Reimens long back was keen to lay his hands on a couple of
copies, one for a friend in Romania, where they have "exactly
the same, typically Catholic thing".

But, in the past, the almanac wasn't just a quaint collectors
item. At its peak it sold some 5000 copies, I was told some
time ago by septuagenarian Elsa Correia, daughter of the
founder of this publication, Joaquim Filipe Roque Correia,
who first published it in the year 1903. It is one of the
very few publications in Asia now brought out in Portuguese.

Elsa Correia, fighting shy of the publicity and the credit
for carrying out the publication, said after the death of her
father, it was run by her late brother Domingos. She has
taken over the reigns, "not as a business, but just to
continue and serve the readers", as she put it.

"He (my father Joaquim Correa) was a calendarist --
and knew everything regarding calendards, including
religious calendars. He was the proprietor of
  Tipografia Progressa ('Tipography' is Portuguese
for 'printing press') located behind Margao's Holy
  Spirit Church," Correia recalls.

"It is the only annual publication in Portuguese language in
Goa. I've received letters from Italy and elsewhere (voicing
interest about it)", she says.

[Goanet] Attacks on Indians are racisit : Australia's ex-Army chief

2010-01-22 Thread Mario Goveia

Wonder what argument our resident NRGs have this time. Ex-Army chief has lost
his "civic consciousness" ? :-)

Date: Wed, 20 Jan 2010 22:06:53 -0500
From: Venantius J Pinto

To All among Us on Goanet,
I would like to know whether any Goan, NRG or resident on Goanet explicitly
said that the attacks in Australia, were in any way not racist. Was it even
implied that the attacks and deaths must not be seen as racist.

Mario observes:

The last I heard they had not caught those who had attacked the Indians in
Australia.  Until they are caught and there is evidence that their attacks were
racist, how would anyone know for sure whether the attacks were racist or not?

Gabriel de Figueiredo showed where an attack on some Indians in Australia were
actually carried out by other Indians:

http://lists.goanet.org/pipermail/goanet-goanet.org/2010-January/188317.html

If you read the article posted by Samir, the ex-Army Chief has no facts or
evidence to back up his incendiary speculation.

Here is his not-so-brilliant analysis of his "suspicions" followed by a
suggestion that the authorities "look more closely":

Quote:
"If you didn't suspect a racial strand you'd be mad.  Attacks recently by
groups of people on individuals looks like a profiling approach to people from
the sub-continent. Rather than say 'nothing to worry about', I'd rather look
more closely,"
Unquote.

The article goes on to say, "Indian media have labelled the attacks as racist,
but police and the government insist they are purely criminal."

Once again, there is no evidence as yet to know for sure whether these
particular attacks were racial or criminal.

Samir's intention in posting such a scurrilous article filled with baseless
speculation was clearly to deflect attention from his furious personal attacks
on NRGs trying to help address the mess in Goa.

In the meantime the Rahejas are not impressed by the crime waves and racism
taking place in Australia, the Bahamas and the USA:-)) They are happy that
attention is being deflected by Tony and Samir from their co-opting of village
Panchayats in Goa.

.to achieve the goal, the RGs and NRGs should be complementary to each
other and should have a positive resolve to do something to the overall
development.  Either one can not do without the other.

Mario observes:

MD, you, too, are correct.

However, what we had was one RG and one NRG with Indian citizenship running
amok throwing stones and brickbats at every NRG in sight, impugning their
citizenship and their motives, running down their countries, rubbishing their
legal standing in India, instead of joining with them in attacking the primary
problem in Goa, or even the secondary problem.

The comments shown in the following posts were what I took issue with precisely
to get everyone to focus on the primary problem in Goa, the unholy alliance
between corrupt politicians and business interests:

Mario Goveia [not, Gouveia] observes:

To begin with, do the bug, ...er, chaps, in Goa know what 'sarsaparilla'
is? Maybe they do.

Secondly, there is about as much of a connection as there is between the
corruption and racism in Australia, the Bahamas and the USA and the corruption
in Goa. In other words, zero, zip, nada. I don't do fruity drinks, whether

[Goanet] Air India Alert

2010-01-22 Thread Mauricio Pereira

The government has put all Air India planes operating in the country's
neighbourhood on high security alert and directed the airlines to deploy sky
marshals following intelligence inputs that Pakistan-based LeT and other terror
groups were planning to hijack a flight.

A directive has been issued to all Indian missions abroad to sensitise the
staff of the airlines, official sources said.

According to intelligence inputs, terrorist groups having allegiance with
Al-Qaida, Lashkar-e-Toiba and Jamat-ul-Dawa were planning to hijack an Air
India plane especially operating in or from SAARC countries -- Nepal,
Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Bhutan, Maldives, Afghanistan, Pakistan and India as
well.

Hijacking could be attempted by the terrorists from airports located at Yangon,
Dhaka and Colombo. Security of planes operating to Bhutan has also been beefed
up, the sources said.

Following this input, the Civil Aviation Ministry has directed all the airlines
especially Air India to take extra steps besides asking Bureau of Civil
Aviation Security to deploy sky marshals on aircraft operating on such routes,
the sources said.

On its part, the External Affairs Ministry has asked Indian missions,
particularly in SAARC countries, to brief the staff of the Air India and other
Indian carriers about the threat.

Taking a serious view of the threat, the Home Ministry yesterday issued
directions to upgrade security.

The intelligence input has been shared with India by Western spy agencies,
which had received an intercept.

Special Secretary (Internal Security) U K Bansal said, "We have intelligence
inputs that there could be a hijack attempt of Indian planes. So we have
alerted the Ministry of Civil Aviation and Bureau of Civil Aviation Security
(BCAS) and tightened security in all airports in the country."

The BCAS has issued an advisory to all airlines to conduct a mandatory
secondary ladder point check on all aircraft flying in the region.

As far as I am concerned, the attacks *in the main* are not racist. I have said
so in the past on GoaNet.

Though I have experienced real racism in the East End of London (Kent, to be

This is typically the sarsaparilla that Gouveia specializes in. So parents,
husbands, wives, relations who invest money or goods or services for their
children/ spouses/ relations have half brains by the reckoning of the
'economist' from Jamshedpur's Tata Industries? Philanthropists who invest
millions by this reasoning must be having atomic brains.

Mario responds:

We can see that Tony De Sa cannot even spell my name correctly.

As the lone voice of reason, truth and peace, I am forced again to explain
what I wrote to show that Tony is having a hard time following the
conversation:-))

Tony previously wrote, "I am no economist I confess, but I suspect
that this money was primarily sent to alleviate the lot of their families
and not specifically to improve the economy of the State."

Here is what I wrote in response to Tony's bizarre notion that people invest
their money "specifically to improve the economy of the State":
http://lists.goanet.org/pipermail/goanet-goanet.org/2010-January/188852.html

Quote:
No one with more than half a brain works hard and invests money primarily
for someone else's benefit. When people help themselves economically, they
automatically help others around them when the money is spent on purchases
and starts circulating in the economy.
Unquote.

Obviously when parents, husbands, wives, relations who invest money or goods
or services for their children/ spouses/ relations they are investing
primarily for the benefit of their own family and "not specifically to
improve the economy of the State", as Tony wants NRGs to do. Only those
with half a brain would invest "specifically to improve the economy of the
State."

I wonder if Tony can grasp the difference.

I wonder who he is talking about from Jamshedpur's Tata Industries. Must be
like that Goan from Toledo. It's those pesky facts again that Tony has a
problem with.

Tony wrote:

Philanthropists who invest millions by this reasoning must be having atomic
brains.

Mario responds:

Once again I will be glad to teach Tony how this works:-))

Most American philanthropists like Bill Gates and Warren Buffet were not
born wealthy, i.e they did not have enough money to be "philanthropists".
They later became wildly successful in their businesses, investing for
themselves, not for others.

Once they had more money than they knew what to do with, they started giving
money away to help others, i.e. became philanthropists. They never invested
"for others" because not too long ago, they had no idea they would have so
much money even for themselves.

Tony wrote:

Mario observes:

I think this gives us all an insight into the kind of half-baked thinking we
are dealing with here who joined Samir in launching a furious assault not on
the corruption that is responsible for the real mess in Goa but on NRGs
trying to help.
===

As usual Mario has caught the bull by its tail and has got you know what on
his hands.

When you NRG guys talk about the "real mess in Goa" you are talking in
respect to what frame of reference? USA? Canada? Zimbabwe? Bangladesh?

I live in Goa 24x7 and I don't find the "real mess in Goa" as bad as it is
made out to be. The way Mario and his cohorts are going on, one would think
doomsday is like one hour away.

There are problems, yes. Look at the problems in the Indian context.
Corruption? Yes there is corruption. But by spouting advice on an internet
forum are you going to change the situation? Garbage, yes garbage is a
problem. It is not like nothing is being done about it. NRGs wanna help?
Yes, come down and wield a bloomin shovel or a bull dozer or a JCB but don't
just tell me to take a shovel and get rid of it. Illegal mining? NRGs don't
tell us that we should stop illegal mining. Just do like RG Cheryl and do
something concrete. Hill cutting? Join the pickets. I could go on and on.

Unfortunately, some guys just can't get it in their thick heads that we
don't want your "we-are-in-foren-so-we-know-everything"advice. We want your
example.
As I said earlier and am repeating my self for the nth time, taking this
argument into bylanes and lanes and circles does nothing.

It was the first day at a school in the United States. A new Indian student
named Chandrasekhar Subramanian entered the fourth grade.

The teacher said, "Let's begin by reviewing some American history. Who said
'Give me liberty, or give me death?'

She saw a sea of blank faces, except for Chandrasekhar, who had his hand up
"Patrick Henry, 1775" He said.

"Very good"! Who said 'Government of the people, by the people, for the
people, shall not perish from the Earth?'

Again, no response, except from Chandrasekhar. "Abraham Lincoln, 1863", said
Chandrasekhar.

The teacher snapped at the class, "Class, you should be ashamed. Chandrasekhar,
who is new to our country, knows more about our history than you do".

She heard a loud whisper : "F the Indians"

"Who said that?" She demanded. Chandrasekhar put his hand up. "General Custer,
1862".

At that point, a student in the back said, "I'm gonna puke".

The teacher glares around and asks "All right! Now, who said that?"

Again, Chandrasekhar says, "George Bush to the Japanese prime minister, 1991".

Now furious, another student yells, "Oh yeah? Suck this!"

Chandrasekhar jumps out of his chair waving his hand and shouts to the teacher,
"Bill Clinton to Monica Lewinsky, 1997"

Now with almost mob hysteria, someone said "You little shit. If you say
anything else, I'll kill you". Chandrasekhar frantically yells at the top of
his voice, "Michael Jackson (RIP) to the child witnesses testifying against him
- 2004".

The teacher fainted.

As the class gathered around the teacher on the floor, someone said, "Oh shit,
we're screwed!". And Chandrasekhar said quietly, "I think it was the American
people, November, 2008 when America officially hit recession".

[Goanet] Abortion is first degree murder

2010-01-22 Thread cyril D'Souza
To,
The Editor,
Herald Newspaper
Panjim - Goa

Sir ,

Subject :Abortion is 'First Degree Murder'.

This is with reply to the article in Herald dated 16th January 2010 titled
'The Reproductive Rights of Women' written by one Venita Coelho following
which there have been some excellent replies to her article and I am sure
whoever has read it are surprised that it is coming from a personality like
her . Even if she is in the business of promoting abortions it is our
bounden duty to make her realise that her one ariticle may have already led
a few especially the gulible and young into taking this extreme step of
committing this heinous crime against the unborn child whose innocent blood
will be on her hands Only the mother can protect the child thats in her womb
and if the mother herself decides to kill her own baby who has no means of
fighting for its rights then such mothers who are encouraged and misled by
unscrupulous elements in society are committing an action which is not only
murder - *it is first degree murder*.

The sad part is that the article has come from least expected quarters and
should serve as a wake up call to the church authorities in Goa who now
should aggressively try to strive to promote the right values especially
amongst our youth . Parents should keep a track especially on their young
ones and make them aware as in todays' times the evil one is working
overtime to destroy as many souls as possible and the crime of abortion
never goes unpunished and remains as a ' hidden scar ' in the hearts and
souls of all those who have been fooled into committing this crime against a
helpless unborn child for no fault of hers/his and whose innocent blood
will cry to the heavens for eternal vengeance. Venita your article is no
different from the infamous writings of the late cleric Nasser Al
Zakhawi whose articles spoke in favour of suicide bombings terming them for
the first time as martyrdom thus causing many misled youth to join the death
squads . The real martyrs are the innocent who are killed especially the
tiny innocent unborn children .All the lame excuses and lies used to cover
up abortion can hide the real truth that innocent blood was shed -Its sad
when the sacred mothers'womb becomes a tomb.

Thank you and God Bless the staff of Herald ,

Yours sincerely*,*

[Goanet] CHEATING ENCOURAGED IN GOA !!!!

2010-01-22 Thread valley faleiro

I was extremely taken aback when I witnessed this in Goa !

I was on a short holiday and decided to see a konkanni play MAINK LAGON at
G.V.N. Hall, Margao on the 17th Jan 2010. I went to the counter to buy a
current ticket and was told that only the back seats in the balcony were
available . Just then three men come to the counter and offer me the front
seats which are normally sold at Rs. 70.00 for Rs. 100.00. Being new to the
place and not knowing the rates , I asked the man selling tickets at the
counter if they were genuine tickets and the rate was perfect. He told me that
those tickets were perfect. I bought the tickets and went into the auditorium.
The people sitting next to me asked me if I had bought the ticket earlier or on
the spot.

I was shocked to know that these touts buy the good seats earlier and sell them
in BLACK under the very nose of the authorities of premises. I could not act as
I was there only for a day more .It should be SHAME for the director of the
play to get wide publicity by this type of action .

My question is :

1. Can they not stop this happening in Goa

2. Are the staff operating hand in hand with these touts ?? Can these staff be
taken into task for not reporting this matter to the authorities ???

3. Can some activitists get up and take necesary action to stop this , so that
our Goan people can come and pass their time from a busy life happily ???

[Goanet] A taste of Goan assertion

2010-01-22 Thread soter
A Punjabi got a taste of Goan assertion in front of Cafe Central at Panjim. A
local toursit taxi almost brushed a Punjab registered car. Out came a huge man
who grabbed the collar of the taxi driver and tried to pull him out of the car.
A Goan who was on his bike ready to speed off and enjoy the hot mushroom
samosas noticed the Punjabi attempting to assault the taxi driver. The Goan
went up to the Punjabi and told him to stop assaulting the taxi driver. The
Punjabi in a fit of rage began arguing with the Goan. The Goan warned the
Punjabi not tot take the law in his hands. Meanwhile the fritghtened Goan girl
who was from the taxi also picked up courage and confronted the Punjabi. The
Goan lad told the punjabi that this is not Delhi or Punjab and his act will not
be tolerated. Hearing this, the wife of the Punjabi alighted from the car and
questioned the Goan lad about his attitude. The Goan lad respectfully asked the
Punjabi lady whether the attitude of her partner in assualting the taxi driver
is acceptable and whether such behaviour would be tolerated from a Goan in
Punjab or Delhi. The Punjabi replied that he has been residing in Goa for
several months. "In that case", the Goan lad said, "you need to learn about the
Goan ethos and stop behaving like in Delhi or Punjab." The Punjabi threatened
to call the police. The Goan lad told the Punjabi to call up the even the home
minister. As some more Goan youth gathered and started showing signs of
restlessness the Punjabi withdrew into his car mumbling some foul language only
to find that his Goan driver had vanished from the driver's seat. The driver
fearing a show down was watching from far. The Goan lad then asked the tourist
taxi operator why he was taking the rubbish from an outsider. The man said
because his customers would be inconvenienced. The Goan told him that if you do
not stand up for your rights not only you but even your customers will be
thrashed by these boisterous migrants. All Goans around nodded in agreement
that we should not take this nonsense lying down. For once a goan had asserted
himself and repulsed the migrant dadagiri.

[Goanet] Zagor, Khell, Khell-Tiatr & Tiatr

2010-01-22 Thread JoeGoaUk

Ongoing dicussion on  Tiatr  on Goa-reseach net, inspired me this (see link
below)

Zagor, Khell, Khell-Tiatr & Tiatr

http://www.flickr.com/photos/joegoauk/207794086/sizes/o/
above two pics to the righs, indicates a for of 'zagor'

ZAGOR
I guess ZAGOR  is as old as  Zomnivoile KHEL.
ZAGOR usually staged on village feast days and other annual days.
It is basically a song-musical-dance-fancy dressed including
wearing of tree branches , of  leaves, flowers etc
It’s colourful often too much of  red, and hence we have a konkani
saying ‘Tamdde Zagor’
When a person dress colourful or over the top, we may describe
it  as ‘zagor’ or ‘tamdde Zagor’ (if red).
Zagor has two forms Christian and Hindu Zagor (see some Hindu clips)
Christian zagor, it was essentially from Kunnbi/Gauddi Community.
ZAGOR is basically a message or a gossip based on true facts and
hear-say  in the form of songs. Zagor is all about dress & Songs.
Message from lowers section of the community to higher or elite
section.
It often talk about Bhatkar,Portuguese, Regidor, mukdom etc.
There is no limit  on what one may say or dress, so it is essentially an
adult entertainment.
There were no females actors. Males dressed as female.
It may talk about Bhatkar e.g.
‘Bakra baban munddkraghe cheddvak pirddar kelem’
(Jr. Landlord  raped tenant’s daughter’
‘Bhakraghe bhail pakleako bori asa’
(Landlord’s wife having affair with Portuguese (white)
Audience mainly of  Kunnbi Cummunity with few Sudras.

http://www.flickr.com/photos/joegoauk11/2229697865/sizes/o/

On the other hand, KHELL (Zomnivoile Khell) is sort of
One act Folk Play each lasting about 30-45 minutes.
Khell  means Canrival Khell (and Easter Khell)
Which means, Khell only performed say Max. 6-14 days in a year.
During and just before Carnival or Intruz and again during Eater week.
Khell essentially means at least two acts or more
And we call it ‘Partio’ (Part(i), being singular).
There was a time, they used to give up to 5 ‘partio’
But now, it is always 3, sometimes all 3 finished in 2 hours.
Each parti (act) will have  separate story and song/music.
The next parti will be entirely of different topic.
Khell also essentially mean Musical Khell (Play)
With brass band like full drum set, trumpet, clarinet or Sax and banjo.
Khell played on ground (with no stage or curtains or Podde)
Locals used to form a circle (full circle), the the artists performed
In the middle/centre. They too sat in a circle and rise up as and when
their role comes up,
To go to one house to another Or going from one actor to another in
the circle, a music was played to indicate this.

http://www.flickr.com/photos/joegoauk17/3305127818/sizes/l/
Audience at a 'Khell'

Typicall, it is like this (an actor will stand up)
‘Antam hanv kit kotolom? Bhoinnighe oitolom ani todde poixe magtolom’
(What would I do now? I’ll go to my sister’s and borrow some money’
The sister (man dressed as a female) who was sitting is now rise up.
Now, the role is in between the brother and the sister, only two of them
will be seen Standing in the circle.
(watch some recent Khell Clips 2006/2007/2008/2009)
Popular director/actors of 50’s, 60s & 70s were Xalibai, Bata-cotto, Koloi etc

Band with Audeince

http://www.flickr.com/photos/joegoauk17/3305125516/sizes/l/
A Khell scene

KHELL-TIATR
It is a modified form of KHELL.
Instead of one act, it will now have say 6-8 acts as one single
story./drama.
It will have songs, Canto related to the story.
It is performed on stage with full set of Podde/curtains
Populars were Patrick Dourado, Ligorio Fernandes,
Rosario Rodrigues etc (70’s & 80’s)

TIATR

http://www.flickr.com/photos/joegoauk-tiatr2/3950609507/sizes/l/

It is again originated from KHELL TIATR
It will have songs, duo, duets, Trios, Quatro etc not related to the tiatr
story.
It will also have Cantos  (sort of sad songs).
Canto always relates to the drama story.
(watch some clips)

Note: Above is my version. Corrections/feedback welcome
I remember watching 2-3 ZAGOR in 70’s
ZAGOR is like our weekly GO
Except it is in Print edition, which boldly brings out
weekly round ups on front page and in stray thoughts.

The paradoxically complex and yet facile topic of
Non-Resident Goans versus Resident Goans continued
on Goanet. I can think of several Non-Resident
Goans, such as Victor Rangel Ribeiro, Francis
Newton Souza, Assis de Correira, Armando Menezes,
to name a few, who contributed richly towards Goa's
intellectual capital. The strength of Goa has
always been this intimate collaboration and
understanding between the sons and daughters of its
soil, wherever they maybe based. Poet and writer
Armando Menezes perhaps articulated it best on the
eve of the historic opinion poll when he said:
"Loving our country we have gone into exile; but
though we soared, we did not roam: our hearts like
the skylark's, were ever in our little nests."

[Goanet] Kissing the priests' hands

JoeGoaUk (Jan 19 ) asks '' Devache Munxeamche ami umao ghetat gai ?
( Do we now kiss hands of the priests as we used to do in olden times? )
Salus Correia (Jan 21 ) replies: We used to neither because we ''assumed
priest was holy'' nor because we '' considered priest as God'' but because
''those hands are blessed, holding the consecrated host each day,(hence)
they are holy receptacles which hold the body of our God while on the
altar''.
(So) ''We are kissing a holy receptacle and not the actual hands of a
priest''

AM is perplexed: So hands are blessed and become holy receptacle. Are not
hands a projection of brain power or controlled by brain ? If a brain is
polluted
by ideas of casteism, can the hands remain pure and hence be a holy
receptacle of God?
