[Goanet] Goa Church under cloud for selling island to resort company
* Goa Church under cloud for selling island to resort company * 2010-08-12 12:20:00 The Church in Goa has come under a cloud following the sale of one of the river islands owned by the Archdiocese of Goa to a resort developer. Villagers residing at Vanxim (Ilhas de Capao), a small picturesque island located in the Mandovi river, about 20 km from here, have alleged that the Church and the administration colluded to strip them of their land and sold it to a Bangalore-based luxury resort company at throwaway prices. Most of the villagers of the island are tenants. Maggie Silveria, one of the affected tenants, who is leading a public campaign to cancel the sale deed executed by the Church authorities and the resort management said: 'Our main demand is in the interest of the people in Vanxim, who are all legal tenants. A lot of residents were pressurised by the deputy collector into making representations that the land was not being used for agriculture. The land has been taken off by the Archdiocese of Goa using unfair means.' 'We have made several representations to the church and even met procurator Father Victor Ferrao (in-charge of the church's property). He initially said that he would take the land back and return the money to the resort company. However, the sale deed is already done,' she added. Maggie's crusade has received a shot in the arm after several well-known NGOs namely Gakuved, GOAMAP, Goenchea Xetkarancho Ekvott, Colva Civic and Consumer Forum and Chinchinim Citizens Forum addressed a joint press conference condemning the sale of the land. The Goa Agricultural Tenancy Act, 1964 stipulates that if a tenant does not cultivate his leased field for a period of three consecutive years, it is returned to the owner leaving the tenant with no rights over it. The island of Capao (Ilhas de Capao) lies in the Mandovi river to the north of Divar island and to the south of Narve, Bicholim taluka in a highly eco-sensitive zone with acres of mangrove forest. There are 78 houses in the village with about 55 families residing on the island. It is part of the large tracts of land which were gifted to the clergy almost 450 years ago during the first century of Portuguese colonisation regime with most farmers being tenants of the Church. With the expulsion of all Catholic religious orders, the land that belonged to them were handed over to the Archdiocese of Goa and they so remain till this day. Sebastian Rodrigues, a well known civil society activist, blamed the sale of land by the Church to a resort developer (not for the first time) on the Church-capitalist nexus. 'The fear amongst the people is because it is the head of their Catholic faith, the Archbishop himself who sold their land for peanuts. This is an insult as well as shock at the same time. But these trends in Vanxim are clearly designed by Church-capitalist nexus towards accumulation of wealth through dispossession of the same from people,' he said. Church authorities, however, have chosen to remain mum over the controversial land sale which has generated a buzz amongst civil society activists in the state as well as the large expat community abroad, largely Roman Catholic. IANS' repeated attempts to seek an official response from the Bishop's House, the official residence of the Goa archbishop, were unfruitful. Bishop's house official Fr Victor Ferrao and Fr Francis Caldeira, spokesperson for the Archdiocese, were unwilling to comment. http://sify.com/news/goa-church-under-cloud-for-selling-island-to-resort-company-news-national-kimmuejifag.html COMMENT: Don't know how far this is true; deeds have to be checked. Why are people suddenly so surprised? the clergy are after all human and Goans, a fast buck is a fast buck in any language. -- DEV BOREM KORUM Gabe Menezes.

[Goanet] SMILE................... IT'S WEEKEND (12/08/2010)
NOT TO. A Mumbai based Somnath boarded in a Mumbai-Goa bus. The bus made its first halt for the evening tea. Remeth (cleaner/helper of the bus) noticed that Somnath ordered Samosas and eat only the filling and not the shell. At night again the bus stopped for the dinner. As all the passengers having Rice/Chicken/Mutton etc for the dinner, but Remeth saw that Somnath ordered Masala Dosa and eat only the masala by leaving the dosa aside. Next day early morning bus stopped for morning tea:- Remeth: This will be the last stop for 30 minutes, after that the bus will halt only in Mapuca-Goa. Remeth were eager to see what Somnath will do this time. Somnath orders for Batata Vada. This time too he eats only the filling and leaves the shell behind. Remeth is losing his patience, he walks up to Somnath and asks him:- Remeth: Sahab, agar app bura na mane tho, maim apse khuch phuch sakta hoom? (Sir if you don't mind, can I ask you something?) Somnath: Pucho…… pucho, isme kya hai! (No problem you may ask) Remeth: Aap dish ke under ka hi cheez kyon khaa rahe ho, kya baki cheez pasand nahi aaya..? ( why are you eating the inside stuff don't you like the rest of it.) Somnath: Arre bhaiyya, aisi baat nahi. Hamaari tabiyat kuch teekh nahi, isliye doctor ne kaha ki baahar ka cheez mat khaya karo... (I am not feeling so well so the doctor told me not to it outside stuff.) Cajetan de Sanvordem Kuwait.

[Goanet] WORLD GOA DAY - 2010 Message . President of GOA Toronto.
A thought provoking message from Oscar Furtado , President of the Goan Overseas Association, Toronto , Canada. .. 00 WORLD GOA DAY - 10th Anniversary 20..8.2010 O OO To Goans all around the world, Many Goan Associations and groups of Goans around the world have already hosted events to celebrate this special day, ‘World GOA Day’. A day that reminds us of our proud heritage - one that is worth preserving for future generations of Goans. The next generation is hungry for information about their past, where they came from, what’s in their DNA. Well, lets not waist this important chance to share this day with them. I encourage every Association around the world to take our celebrations one step further. As President of the Goan Overseas Association in Toronto we decided to make strategic changes to our annual calendar to ensure we focused on culture and the next generation. One of our primary goals was to create an opportunity for the next generation to learn about their culture and celebrate it year round. To us the solution was simple – establish specific portfolios that focused on the youth and family. Once we did this, we created specific portfolios that focused on Goan dance, language and cooking lessons. This was our way to help preserve our culture as most of the “next generation’ of Goans within our Association are now born in Canada – hungry for knowledge about GOA and their culture. I share this with you mainly for you to understand our thinking that we now designate many events throughout the year as our ‘events’ to celebrate World Goa Day. We want this to be part of our daily life. When we migrated to Canada, we brought a part of GOA with us and we plan to share that with future generations. Today his solution – a mobile-phone adaptation that triggers irrigation pumps remotely – is saving water in India and helping more than 10,000 farmers avoid several taxing, dangerous long walks a day. I talked to Mr Santosh for a podcast earlier this year, but it’s worth digging back into the transcript now to help explain the Indian concept of jugaad, an inspired kind of duct-taped ingenuity that employs only the tools at hand. [Goanet] Kaun Banega Crore - pati!!!
The Goan Slumdog Our friend from Moira, Juze Bostiaum, appeared on Kaun Banega Crorepati, Amitabh Bachchan's show from Mumbai. Juze had miraculously reached the end of the rounds by saying all his Rosaries Novenas had already won Rs. 50 lacs. You've done very well so far, said Amitabh, but for Rs. 1 crore, you've only got one lifeline left - Phone a Friend. Everything's riding on this question... will you go for it? Sure, said Juze. Aum ek last chance marta! OK. The QUESTION is. Which of the following birds does NOT build its own nest? a) Robin, (b) Sparrow, (c) Cuckoo, or (d) Crow? Heje mainchem cazar... I not knowing dat, said Juze, so better use my last life line, and phone to my friend, Pedru Pochok- (Actual name: Pedro Pacheco) from Mumbai. He's a Mangy, but a Bandra boy, born brought up in Mumbai, so he's too smart - a real shaana bugger. Juze called up his friend in Mumbai, told him the circumstances and repeated the question to him. Arree Baba! cried Pedru, Sarko Endo Mure Tu, Simple it is ..it's a cuckoo. Ah-vois, sure murre, Pedru? asked Juze. Arre Baba, hundred percent sure re! Pakka! Juze hung up the phone told Amitabh Bachan, I tell Cookoo. Is that your final answer? asked Amitabh. Sarkem sure, Sir! There was a long, long pause, and then Amitabh Bachan screamed, Cuckoo is the correct answer! Juze, you've won Rs..1 Crore!! The next night, Juze threw a big party for all the people from Moira, at the Moira Club. Pedru was specially flown in from Mumbai, as the Chief Guest. Time for speeches ... Juze takes the mike asks Pedru, Saang murre, Pedru? Foo told you? How you know cuckoo isn't building its own nest? Otherwise you sarko bondo and know nothing about birds, re. Your Fadder or teecher tol you, ah-what? C'mon yaaar! Bas-kya! What yor saying? laughed Pedru. You Goan Pãos are sometimes such duffers, men.. Everybody knows a cuckoo lives in a clock! Viva Goa ! [Goanet] Some anti-plagiarism software
- Santosh Helekar wrote: I am indeed an expert on plagiarism because as a scientific laborer I have a professional need to know and teach students, fellows and researchers who work with me what is it that constitutes plagiarism. This is because they and I have to write full length peer-reviewed original research articles and grants, as well as review the ones written by others. GL responds: The above is similar to your line on the cancer cure discussion; where you claimed: critical reading, understanding and study of the latest original papers. Such claims do not fool those who know. To some, that sounds pretty impressive. One cannot fool ALL people for ALL the time. My jaw dropped to see your posts on cancer cure. Is that your MO? Use of anti-plagiarism software is like the 'radar gun / trapster' on the car to detect the speed traps; instead of obeying the speed limits. It appears as you have studied the topic of plagiarism, you have developed a way to circumvent (find a loophole); while continuing to plagiarize. The following however may help those who truly desire to write their thoughts and perspectives. Referring to References: This is not pointed at any individual. Hopefully it will address misconceptions and change some practices on Goanet From the article in the link below from Indiana University, there is both an acceptable AND unacceptable summation of what is written / published. The former is called Acceptable Paraphrasing (kosher / permissible). The later is called Plagiarism (non-kosher / not-OK). The terms Paraphrasing and Plagiarism is taken from the Indiana University education site. Readers may want to review the examples provided for themselves. http://www.indiana.edu/~wts/pamphlets/plagiarism.shtml If I am not mistaken, the plagiarized material was from the above link. But conveniently excluded were the two types of summations - the acceptable and unacceptable. Is this a similar to the selective but inappropriate quotes on cancer cure? Semantics aside, what is not acceptable (except for one solitary member on goanet) is WHOLESALE use of Copy and Paste even with a reference / link. Here, the author has not added anything original to the dialog / discussion other than FALSELY presenting himself as an expert on the topic d' jour (topic of the day), displaying his / her prowess at web-surfing and technology-skills; including use of software to detect plagiarism. At best, the author uses COPY AND PASTE technology rather than self-knowledge and persuasive writing skills to enlighten and expand the dialog. More likely, he / she deflects discussing the specific issue. In the dialog, he / she may tend to mis-state the issue (to suit the COPY and PASTE material), and then summarizes with bogus comments and innuendos. Does plagiarism software differentiate between the two types of summations presented in the Indiana website? I do not know, since I do not deal with such software. Software certainly helps raise a 'red flag'. Following which as the Indiana website points out, the material has to be closely analyzed by knowledgeable individuals on the subject; before any definitive conclusions are drawn. One individual is not judge, jury, and executioner; as some of the you-know-what do on goanet. The history article from Yale University (see link below) demonstrates how quote(s) from a reference should be used. It should only be a VERY SMALL PART of the author's writing. The author uses his own knowledge (previously researched) as the basis to make the rational and persuasive points. And the reference(s) is only an added back-up. http://gotmedieval.blogspot.com/2010/08/professor-newts-distorted-history.html Santosh please feel free to forward this post to your devoted followers on multiple other lists including the spam lists to which you belong. This information on both history and appropriate way to use references will likely help them. Nice to see, you are pretty selective in what you forward from Goanet to your spam list, even on the same thread; and to note that the two you-know-what are the only one sharing love notes.:=)) Regards, GL

Re: [Goanet] Caste and Creed in Goa
Dear Vasant and all goanetters, My reply is this: it is simple. All Indians are Hundu Hindu, Hindu Christian and even some are Hindu Muslims; as one Arab muslim said to me once long ago in a Gulf state. When I said to him there are many muslims in India; he spokke of them as Hindu Muslim. That surprised me then. So my conclusion is that the casteism comes from all our Hindu ancestry. It is difficult to shake off the Hindu ancestry and casteism prevailing all around you. I am not making apologies for Hindu Christians, who call their caste, if a superior one. U will notice that Christians witout Hindu ancestry like say some Anglo Indians and foreigners do not have any caste class or bias. Therefore the caste and casteism of the original Hindu, the resident born Indian is to blame for for the CURSE and Ignomany of the Caste System. Only the Hindu remained Hindu community can rid India of this casteism that is Racism, indeed. The Hindus are not doing anything about it. In fact the RSS, the BJP are all casteist and want to enforce casteist Rule everywhere. Look around you! What a SHAME!! In this day and age. How can anyone make eexcuses for such an affront to humanity. Yak! Go and wash your Sins against humanity in the Ganga that is already dirty, with so many Sins washed away over the centuries. Even our rivers cannot escape this dirt and Curse of Hinduism! Dear Vasant, do U not think this problem calls for complete REFORM among Indians? I hope U do. I think it is high time that the world community takes action against this type of racism, and segregation. Nascy. [Goanet] Nestle to invest Rs 350 cr on a new plant in Karnataka
-- Samir Umarye BICHOLIM :FMCG major Nestle today said it will invest Rs 350 crore to set up a manufacturing plant in Karnataka to produce the 'Maggi' range of food products. The 'Maggi' range includes noodles, soups, ketchups among others. The company, which has seven other manufacturing plants in different parts of the country, also said it will increase the capacities of those units. Confirming the development, a spokesperson told PTI that the company has already laid the foundation stone for a new culinary plant in Nanjangud (Karnakata), which is estimated to require an investment of around Rs 350 crore. The spokesperson, however, declined to give further details on the capacity of the plant and by when it is likely to be operational. At present, the company has seven plants in India located at Moga in Punjab, Samalkha in Haryana, Ponda and Bicholim in Goa, Pantanagar in Uttarakhand, and Choladi in Tamil Nadu. According to analysts, the capacity expansion will lead to a 55 per cent increase in its expenditure by 2011 over the previous two years. According to brokerage firm Motilal Oswal Securities, Nestle's capex is likely to touch Rs 700 crore in the 2009- 2011 period, as against Rs 450 crore in the previous two years. It said Nestle is likely to enhance its capacity at its plants at Moga and Samalkha and other locations. The Nestle spokesperson, however, did not elaborate on the plans but said: Nestle India has been growing strongly in a sustained manner and to ensure the growth momentum we will continue to invest in capacity expansion as required, both at existing or new sites. The analysts pointed out that 'Maggi' range, which includes noodles, soups, ketchups among others, has 25.8 per cent volume growth in the last six months. Even as the estimated Rs 1,150 crore Indian noodles market saw entry of rivals GSK Consumer and Hindustan Unilever, the flagship Maggi noodles continues to enjoy good consumer franchise, they said. Besides, the company's extension of brand into the pasta category and the launch of 'Maggi Resile chow' at Rs 4 in the interiors boosted its sales, it added. Nestle India reported a 20.3 per cent increase in its net profit to Rs 194.8 crore for the quarter ended June 30, 2010. The company's net sales touched Rs 1,466.7 crore during the quarter, translating into a growth of 21.3 per cent over the same quarter last year. During the six months period between January and June, 2010, the company's prepared dishes and cooking aids, which are mainly sold under the 'Maggi' brand, accounts 26.3 per cent to its overall sales.(PTI)

Over 300 Goans gathered in New Jersey for the 10th Biennial Convention, Secaucus, July 3-5th, 2010. The Goan Convention took place over the July 4th weekend at the Crowne Plaza Hotel in Secaucus, New Jersey (just 3 miles outside New York City). There were over 300 people in attendance including adults, youth and children. This Convention had the highest turnout overall and the most number of youth than any previous convention. The 3 day weekend was filled with many activities for all ages and a social platform for people from all over North America, England and Goa to unite and network. From its inception 20 years ago, the goals of the convention have remained steadfast: to give the entire Goan community a way to channel and foster that pride so that our heritage can still flourish even an entire world away. It is of the utmost importance to preserve the things that make us who we are. Without doing so, we lose our identity and our individuality, especially in a melting pot like America. The Convention served as a fantastic medium through which our uniqueness was brought to light. For some, it brought back fond childhood memories of growing up in Goa. For others, it was a glimpse into a place where they have never been, but peculiarly enough, could still call home. The key mission during the Convention was to make sure the Youth got involved and continued the Goan traditions and culture so they can eventually pass on their heritage to their children. A prime example of this was this years' Convention committee. It was organized by a group of Youth for the first time in its 20 year history. It was headed by President: Vaishali Sawant (NJ), Activities Director: Ameeka Borkar (NJ), Treasurer: Priti Vemulapalli (NJ), Secretary: Ashvini Sawant (NJ), Public Relations: Roma Kamatmhamai (CT) and Volunteer Coordinator: Rhea Hodarkar (NY). This was also the first time the committee consisted of all young women. The attendees were all extremely impressed at the collaboration of this Youth committee to bring fresh new ideas making for a successful Convention. The activities of the weekend consisted of lectures by Goan community members including Dr. Anthony Gomes, Mr. Christopher Nunes and George Pinto/Filomena Giese/Acaria Shilla Almeida of Goa Sudharop. There were classes on Konkani Language Basics as well as a class on Learning how to put on a Sari Tie for the Youth. The biggest hit was the Bollywood dance class where adults and youth were taught basic dance moves from Hindi movies. Everyone became a Bollywood star that day. There was also a picnic where the attendees wore Convention t-shirts and participated in soccer games, badminton, family games and even Anthakshari. There was an abundance of Goan culture from Authentic Goan food dishes, folklore songs, traditional dances and even a taped speech by the Chief Minister of Goa, Shri Digambar Kamat. On one evening, the 21 and over Youth were taken via bus to New York City to a club where they were able to socialize with other youth and made connections that will hopefully last a lifetime. On July 5th at the closing ceremonies, the 2012 Goan Convention was handed over to Mahendra Shama Kenkre to be held in Detroit, Michigan. We hope that they continue the Goan traditions and keep the youth involved for years to come. Best of Luck to them! __._,_.___
[Goanet] Failing India's Poor
Landless and illiterate, drowned by debt, Mr. Bhuria and his ailing children have staggered into the hospital ward after falling throughIndia’s social safety net. They should receive subsidized government food and cooking fuel. They do not. The older children should be enrolled in school and receiving a free daily lunch. They are not. And they are hardly alone: India’s eight poorest states have more people in poverty — an estimated 421 million — than Africa’s 26 poorest nations, one study recently reported. http://www.nytimes.com/2010/08/09/world/asia/09food.html?_r=1src=meref=homepage
Re: [Goanet] Caste and Creed in Goa
Hi Venantius Ever so well said below that I can't resist this GoaNet post. Venantius, may I suggest that you could add one more point in your key first paragraph below. Belief in and practice of caste is ipso facto racist and of course, racism is abhorred in any civilised society let alone a Christian one. That the Catholic Church in Goa has been complicit in it for half a millennium and that so many of the clergy across its hierarchy in Goa and the Goan Diaspora uphold this foul creed and never say anything against it surely doesn't say much about the integrity of this religion. And Vasant, if interested, please see GoaNet archives where I have, over six years at least, written extensively and critically on several dimensions of caste among the Catholic Goans. I have also done so elsewhere and continue to do so. [Goanet] Bonds that shine: Sisters polish shoes for ailing brother
*Bonds that shine: Sisters polish shoes for ailing brother* *By Asit Srivastava* Kanpur, Aug 12 (IANS) Their heads bent in concentration as they furiously polish shoes on a roadside in this Uttar Pradesh city, the two young girls are extraordinary profiles of hope in the face of all odds. Shrishti and Muskan have just one mission - to somehow collect Rs.20 lakh for their teenage brother suffering from a rare blood disorder. The task is immense, but so is their will. Carrying a placard saying Mere bhai ko bachao (Save my brother), Shrishti, 14, and Muskan, 9, roam the streets, pleading with people to get their shoes polished. Daughters of an automobile mechanic, they have been polishing shoes for several weeks to generate the money required for the treatment of their ailing 13-year-old brother Anuj, who suffers from aplastic anaemia. The disease, which can lead to unstoppable bleeding, is a condition when the body's bone marrow doesn't make enough new blood cells that results in a number of health problems. Severe aplastic anaemia can even cause death. Anuj is currently admitted in the J.L. Rohatagi hospital in Kanpur, 80 km from Lucknow. Soldiering away through the day, the two sisters probably don't realise that polishing shoes may not go very far in collecting the money, and every rupee earned is enough to bring smiles on their faces and keep their hopes alive. I want to take my brother home as early as possible...I will collect the money and give it to the doctors, who will treat my brother, Muskan told IANS. The children's father, 43-year-old Manish Behl, is very proud of his daughters. The treatment advised by the doctors for my son involves a bone marrow transplant that will require around Rs.20 lakh. My daughters are well aware that their father is not in a position to bear the treatment cost alone and are making efforts to collect the money. Even though I know that they will never be in a position to collect such a hefty amount, their determination and hard work makes me think positive. Being a father of two such girls is really a privilege for me. I am proud of them, added Behl, a resident of the Khalisi line area in Kanpur. Shrishti and Muskan leave for work every day after returning from school and come back only late evening. They go to bus stands, railway station and other public places to polish shoes, said Behl, who is barely able to make both ends meet. They tell me that several people ask them about their brother after reading the placard. Some people are moved by their plight and even give them Rs.50 or Rs.100, he added. Anuj was diagnosed with the disease when he was just three months old. We all were shattered at that time. However, I managed his treatment by mortgaging valuables left by my ancestors and my wife's jewellery, the father said. I consulted a number of doctors in Uttar Pradesh and outside. Anuj's condition started improving with the treatment of a Mumbai-based doctor, who said Anuj may require blood transfusion every five-six months and also need to take some medicines, he added. Behl, who had already spent around Rs.12-14 lakh on the treatment, was later told by doctors that bone marrow transplant was the only way to save his son's life. I have gone through the medical reports. He needs to be admitted in a multi-specialty hospital, where he could undergo bone-marrow transplant, A.K. Pandey, who is at present treating the boy at the J.L. Rohatagi hospital, told IANS. We could only put him on a life-support system so that his condition remains stable. Inspired by the spirit the family has shown in the face of such a crisis, several NGOs and locals have come forward to help. I have managed to collect Rs.2,000 for the girls...Rs.20 lakh is not a a small amount, but collecting it is not impossible if people from all walks of life come forward to help the family, said Zafar Hussain, who owns a garments' shop in Kanpur. [Goanet] A DECADE OF DEDICATED SERVICE FOR THE CAUSE OF GOANS WORLD OVER
A DECADE OF DEDICATED SERVICE FOR THE CAUSE OF GOANS WORLD OVER A decade has passed away and it seems we have not had enough of Rene Barreto the coordinator of Goans world wide. Such leaders among Goans are rare specially those that are passionate for the cause of Goans' unity and are prepared to devote their time for it. The craving for Goans' unity is in the hearts of all Goans but it is an elusive objective and many a Goan has strived but has not been successful to the extent necessary but Rene Barreto set the wheels in motion in 2000 which such enthusiam that it evoked a response unheard of in the past. There are many Goan groups scattered all over the globe but garnering them and keeping them focused for the cause of Goans was a feat requiring leaders such as Rene. The mobilisation of Goans began in 2000 and I recalled receiving an appeal from Rene, when I was in Karachi, requesting that a function be organied to show solidarity with the world Goans who were being asked to do the same. I requested the president of Karachi Goans Association, Mr. Angelo Lopes to join with my association Goinkars Own Acedemy to organise a function worthy of such a cause and he readily agreed. Within a forthnight a function was arrnged at the KGA hall which was attended by over 300 people. There was such a clamour to participate that we ran out of chairs to accommodate them and emergency arrangements had to be made. The function was a roaring success attended by prominent Goans of Karachi. The tradition of celebrating World Goan Day in August each year continues and the seed sown by Rene continues to florish and grow. We say Viva World Goa Day, Viva Goans Goan all over, and Viva Rene Barreto. We are saddned that Rene wishes to retire from this role and hand over to his successor. Dear Rene we thank you for your exceptional efforts for the Goan cause and wish you all the best. We know you will be there for all of us to assist and provide guidance when needed. We know for sure your name will go down in Goan history as the pioneer who showed us the way to unite. God bless you. Maurice Coutinho, President Divar Associaion of Toronto

[Goanet] StyleSpeak: Wedding Capital
StyleSpeak: Wedding Capital By Wendell Rodricks How I love birthdays and weddings. Not the boring social dos where people don’t know wine from vinegar, make inane conversation while flashing their latest Louis Vulgaire (Vuitton) bags, horrid music on full blast and the sexes separate like an Ottoman harem. Two hours of drinking and yawn talk later, people run like a heard of buffaloes to devour the same buffet as the last party in under ten minutes. Then they burp over dessert and flee home. Nah! Not for me. A good old fashioned Goan birthday party is where it rocks. Interesting people (throw in the village drunks to sit aside the Parish priest, local politician or dowager spinsters for full on masala merriment). Robust feni ; always from “my special supplier”. Fashion that can leave Mario Miranda inspired (“You like my new pattern? Material from Dubai!”). Wholesome food ; sorpotel and sannas rule. Musical instruments and singing voices magically appear after the third feni. Dancing toes are released after the fourth round. In one corner a boisterous argument breaks into a full blown rugby brawl. At that stage, listen carefully and learn colourful new Konkani phrases you have never heard before. Goans will ignore repeated calls to the dinner table while hassled staff re-heat dishes every half hour. As the clock goes towards sunrise, hosts struggle to throw guests out of the house. Living in Goa I have also begun to enjoy funerals and months minds. Do we Goans need any excuse to pull out the snacks and the drinks? Funerals are as social events as weddings. There is a pecking order that descends from front row pew to last. Men will dress in suits and ladies pull out their mantillas. It is all very elegant and theatric. People arrive in the same breathless anticipation as they would for a fashion show. Everything is up for comment. “You saw what Perpetine was wearing?’ “That choir is damn good.” “From where they brought the priest? He did not know anything to say.” When I see a cluster of black and white dresses pass under my Colvale balcao, I enquire who has passed away. “No funeral. Months Mind for Anton Braganza”. That immediately conjures up visions of heavenly green chutney sandwiches, beef croquettes and plum cake that are bound to be served by the culinary blessed Mrs. Braganza. Shamelessly throw on a black shirt over my Lulu Lemon gym tracks and jog to church. Through the ramble of prayers in Konkani, I fixate on the bound-to-be-delicious chutney sandwiches that will follow. People take their chutney sandwiches for granted. With a Mom in Bombay and no one aware of my craving for home made goodies, my poor chutney starved stomach is now near ecstacy. When the grave blessing is done, I am delirious with joy. Chomp through three sandwiches, ignoring the beef and cake. I even steal some in a paper napkin. Lucy spots the act and cries out loud for all to hear “What men Wendell, not taking the croquettes and cake owhat? Come come. Take take.” I walk home with my goodie bag napkin: four croquettes for the dogs (I don’t eat beef), two slices of cake for the staff and my chutney stash for ‘feni hour’ to be made truly happy indeed! Goan weddings are sheer orgasmic experiences. From the feasting to the dancing, I want it all. Unlike other cities who do not know how to party, a Goan wedding is about fun, fun and more fun. The bands play till illegal hours. The bar is the main spot. The dancing is athletic. Sometimes things get out of hand. I attended a wedding two months ago and regret the short ‘appearance’ I made, due to house guests. After a sunset boat ride to see crocs near Aldona, I left Lisa Ray and Malaika Arora in my car with a bottle of wine and told them to strictly not step out and start a riot. I then told my chauffer to lock the doors and not let them out even if they pleaded a pee. Bounced into the wedding and out in ten minutes as promised. Next day I heard about a massive row between the couple who were so sloshed in the early morning that among all the many abuses for the entire village to hear, they loudly proclaimed that they wanted a divorce. Missed the tiatr! Since then, I was eagerly waiting for the next wedding invite. It appeared via a phone call. Vikram from IMG/Lakme Fashion Week was getting married. ”Keep July third free!” he commanded. I was excited. A Bombay wedding party in Goa. With a Hyatt room thrown in for the night! Jackpot! However as the week drew near, I panicked at the thought of the big, fat, fake fashion crowd that was bound to follow. Flying to Bombay to address a seminar for a day, I had nightmares of arriving at Goa airport full of fresh flower chandeliers and ‘Vikram weds Neesha’ signs on strawberry ice-cream pink boards with white Styrofoam hearts. Mercifully, that was not the case. In fact the guest list was an intimate eighty people. On D day, I was almost out the door when it dawned

Dear Nascy, I can't agree with you more-Hindu India is laughable indeed-the caste system is a scourge and a disgrace-but Catholic Goa and India needs also to do some soul searching. For the last 40 years as I embraced Goa due to marriage, Goan socialising (anywhere) has amazed and shocked me about the concerns of Bamonn, Chaddo, Khapri, Mestizo, Bardezkar etc,etc...just as I thought I was rid of caste! How can the caste system be practised by followers of Jesus-it foxes me-before asking Santosh about his caste-ask yourself- Tun Konnalo? And laugh at yourself Mate Do some research about 1510 onwards in Goa before ridiculing Hinduism-the caste system is alive and thriving in Goa-but only in Hinduism? Gimme a break! Best Regards Vasant Baliga http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Caste_system_among_Indian_Christians ***Dear Vasant Baliga and Nasci, It is good to do some soul searching regarding the social evils of the Indians and Goans. We see the differences of Konkani dialects, castes, races in Goa. They are ingrained in our ethos. Dialects bring variety and spice in linguistic life. We find also races, as well as castes. Our ancestors were Hindus, therefore we had Hindu names and Hindu customs and mores. We would like to find out our Hindu roots (ancestors), including their castes. By being Christians, we do not forget our castes, there is nothing wrong in it. What is wrong is to discriminate and oppress our people on the basis of class or caste. St.Francis Xavier would not like the Brahmins, because they were oppressing (they were cunning) the poor people. By being Christians, we know that all are God's children, and therefore, we cannot discriminate and oppress our own brethren. Apartheid is a crime against humanity, casteist untouchability is a crime. Saint Paul had to face the problem of slavery. In the letter to Philemon, Saint Paul urges Philemon to treat his slave, Onesimus, who had stolen from his master and run away from Colossae, --he could have even been killed by the master--, as a brother in the Lord (v.16), because both of them became Christians through the teaching of Paul. Paul expects a change in the system of slavery through Christian teaching and conversion. The system of slavery would be transformed and even disappear smoothly. The caste system will disappear slowly. Caste system was originally based on division of occupation and kept India in equilibrium, but later it became oppressive and anti-human. Christianity urges us to treat well everyone, but it cannot remove the marks of ethnic or caste differences. It is not wrong to know to which class we belong, but it is wrong to oppress people because of lower class. I had intelligent students among the lower classes (which we did not even know sometimes), but I would always encourage the weaker students, of whatever social group they might be coming. In our families, we could not even pronounce the names of castes as bad words. But little by little, we came to know about the background of some families, to which caste they belong. The lifestyle also may change according to class, caste, religion, culture, education, politeness. In the past, the question Tum konnalo? could refer to caste or to family. It remained in the folklore. People would know families from different villages (even in the cities, though a little less) and would be happy to identify them or help them. Cujo filho és? would be a normal question. Hiondu names and surnames would help to know the caste, as even today. But Christian names and surnames removed a lot of guessing. It would be wrong to ill-treat students because of their caste. Regarding marriage, we may encourage intercaste marriage, but we must be careful because of marriage problems due to social condition. [Goanet] FW: Goa - sorry state of affairs!!!!!
Subject: Goa - Sorry state of affairs! A must read - a most disgraceful state of affairs even after we have had independence since 1947. Has greed taken over our sense of pride and belonging? Read on and judge for yourselves. Goa has been re-colonised not only by the Brits, Russians and the Israelis but also by the bold and the beautiful and the rich and powerful from other parts of the country. By RAJAN NARAYAN A FEW days ago the sarpanch of Morjim investigated complaints that a Russian national, who had bought property on the border of Morjim and Arambol, had blocked the traditional access to the beach. The security guards of the Russian national who had fenced the traditional access to the beach assaulted the sarpanch. The sarpanch has lodged a police complaint against the security guards who assaulted him. This is not an isolated case. There are large areas of Morjim, particularly in Vithaldas-wadi, which have been totally colonized by the Russians. Locals are not allowed to enter any of the properties which are fenced off and guarded by armed security guards. Russians, who have bought huge amounts of property in Morjim and other villages in the North Goa coastal belt, have built massive structures within 500 metres of the High Tide Line in flagrant and blatant violation of the CRZ Rules. The Chief Secretary told me on Monday that the Goa Coastal Zone Management Authority that is presided over by him intends to crack down on foreigners who have violated the CRZ Rules. RUSSIAN INVASION I recall visiting the Olive Ridley shack on the Morjim beach over five years ago. The shack then was owned by a Polish woman. There was already talk that Russians had begun buying large amounts of property in Morjim. On a subsequent visit to Morjim, I saw a shack in the middle of the beach less than ten metres from the High Tide Line which was festooned with Russian flags. I heard stories of all-night rave parties by Russians and saw the debris of the previous night's party on the beach. But it is not only in Morjim that foreigners have bought large amounts of beachfront property. If Morjim is dominated by Russians, Chapora is dominated by the Israelis. Several parts of the Palolem beach in Canacona have also been colonised by the Israelis. But the largest numbers of foreign citizens who have bought property in Goa are not the Russians or Israelis, but the British. Indeed on the road leading to Calangute from the St. Alex Church there is even a real estate agency which proudly advertises the fact that it is British-owned and only sells property to Brits and other foreign nationals. BI-LINGUAL MENUS OVER the Holi week, which coincided with the Holy Week, I happened to spend the weekend at a small rural resort in Carmona close to the Fatrade beach. I had occasion or provocation to have a look at all the shacks between Fatrade and Mobor. The overwhelming majority of the shacks were full of phirangs. In the shacks on the Cavelossim beach, I saw a wild Holi celebration on with gallons of bhang (opium). The revellers were all Russians. On the tables of many of the shacks, menus were not in English, but Russian. I have seen menus in Hebrew in several beach shacks in Chapora and in Palolem. I have never come across a menu in any Indian language let alone the official language of the state, Konkani in any beach shack anywhere in Goa . Even though a large number of domestic tourists visit Goa . I very often have occasion to visit many of the starred hotels in Goa located both on the North Goa beach belt and the South Goa beach belt for some function or the other. In the last two or three years, whenever I have visited beach resorts, particularly in the Southern coastal belt, stretching from Majorda to Mobor, I have noticed that the details of the various activities planned for the benefit of foreign tourists - including charter tourists - displayed on the activity boards are increasingly in Russian. Depending on the nationality that the hotel is catering to, the activity boards can be even in German or Hebrew for the benefit of the large number of German abd Israeli tourists who visit Goa .. NIGHT BAZAAR GOA has been colonized by phirangs and the signs of their colonial domination of Goa are everywhere, particularly on the beach belt. The largest and the most successful night bazaar in Goa is not run by a Goan or even by an Indian, but by a German called Ingo. During the Bazaar you can see Ingo with two armed bodyguards going around collecting the rentals from those who have taken stalls. I do not know if the bodyguards who accompany Ingo have licenses for the weapons that they openly brandish. The majority of the stalls, particularly the food stalls at Ingo's Saturday Nite Bazaar are run by phirangs of various nationalities. A lot of the material sold at the Saturday night bazaar is
Re: [Goanet] Caste and Creed in Go
Hi Cornel, I respect your position and your concern with racism. That is a given. My point is to suggest that Christians seek conscience within their Christianities, and not construct a conscience because their behaviors put them on the side of being considered a racist in contemporaneity. I do not want Christians to not do something---considered racist, a racist act, belief, or behavior---only within a secular framework---outside of what is their belief system--church going Christianity. My post is very Christian centered, so the answer has to be sought by us Christians within Christianity, and Christ-centerdness** as also in my case, elsewhere too (which is a bot alien, but that is me). In this post i am not looking outside of Christianity and the pride which Goans take in being Christa ins. Your points are well regarded and well taken. The Church is the Church. One just has to look at the situation of education when pre-independence the Portuguese PM wanted Goans to be educated. What happened? Was that mandate carried out? Could one not helpfully apply the term racism here. But of course! However, what does it say, beyond that; unless one is documenting for scholarship and possibly to make people awareness, and that rarely happens. Some of those ecclesiastics are in happy retirement now. Three others are in Rome for training, and life may change. I mean people become priests for various reasons, including mothers wanting their sons to be Bishops, and possibly Pope. Think about that. Let them deal with their own. What people could do, and it may not be you--unless you are on the ground in Goa, practicing with the people making them aware--helping them see, seek meaning identity within their Christianity. It cannot happen otherwise--almost impossible. In general, people are not gracious. I have often told my idiotic acquaintances, idiotic friends, and idiotic relatives and family--to choose grace over uncalled for harshness. But also to have that ready in some measure. But this needs discernment. It happens over time. By that point we will be in our late 60s--those among us who are alive. I am strictly talking of my friends, relatives and family. venantius j pinto From: CORNEL DACOSTA cor...@btinternet.com To: Goa's premiere mailing list, estb. 1994! goanet@lists.goanet.org Subject: Re: [Goanet] Caste and Creed in Goa Message-ID: 478548.33552...@web86604.mail.ird.yahoo.com Content-Type: text/plain; charset=iso-8859-1 Hi Venantius Ever so well said below that?I can't resist this GoaNet post. [Goanet] CURCHOREM LOCALS TO FAST ON 15 AUG TO OPPOSE 4-LANE
PRESS NOTE 12/08/2010 Curchorem Ganv Rakhon Manch demands that the proposed 4-lane road be scrapped and the land acquisition be de-notified forthwith. The locals will hold a token one day fast on the Independence Day in front of Curchorem Municipality from 9 am onwards to remind the Chief Minister, PWD minister and the Dy. Collector of the representations submitted by the Manch and that they must have act with seriousness and with urgency. Four-wheeler traffic (non-mining) on Tilamol-Cotarli road is 30-50 vehicles/hour against the two-lane road capacity of 150 vehicles/hour. The existing road can suffice for next 20 years. The mining traffic is not supposed to ply on this road after the miners pay Rs 500 cr to PWD to build bypass roads. Thus the widening is ploy by mining politicians to fool people and to continue and even increase mining traffic through the heart of Curchorem. Since the road is for mining, it is not public purpose. Acquiring land under the guise of public purpose is illegal. Spending public money for the benefit of rich miners is unjust. Curchorem is the 5th most populated municipality of Goa with a population of 30,000. Kakoda Health Centre and two major hospitals (Dr. Sonu Kamat and Dr. Satish Kudchadkar) are on this road. 1 students from 12 schools, an ITI and a polytechnic commute on this road. No where in the world dirty cargo like iron ore is hauled through the heart of such a town; not even in Bihar. The government is well aware of the air and noise pollution and traffic hazards mining traffic causes. If CM conducts proper study, Curchorem bypass will get the highest priority. Concerned medicos Dr Anil Hari Prabhudessai, Dr Sonu Kamar, Dr Snnanda Bhangui, Dr Satish Kudchadkar, Dr Atchut Kakodkar, Dr Seema Divani, Dr Bhisso Shetgaokar have claimed- High incident of people affected by dust and noise causing bronchial, lung, ear related problems/diseases. Such patients are on a rise for the last few years due to addition of people in Kakumoddi, Bansai getting affected. Ailments reoccur after treatment and recovery proving that the dust and noise level in the air is high due to mining traffic. People staying 10km away from the road also show lung problems. This could be due to the dust carried by the wind. Mining dust is already a chronic problem for the society. After widening there will be more mining traffic, pollution and ailments which are already at alarming levels in Curchorem and its surroundings. The government has no right to jeopardize the life of people. The land losers will be subjected to immense losses in many ways. Many people would lose houses, shops, compounds, trees, Crosses, Tulsi-vrindavans, and parking spaces. Housing society FAR/FSI will get reduced and value of flats will get reduced. At the time of reconstruction two bedroom flat will become one bedroom flat. The members will fight. Making poor people lose for the benefit of miners is injustice. Manch also demands that steps be taken to give people solace from pollution during the next mining season. Pollution problems are caused due to exploitation of truck owners by the miners. Manch demands: Increase the freight paid to truck owners by 30% and stop paying politicians. This will help truck owners to take care of spillage. Miners will not lose much if they give Rs 50 per ton extra to truck owners from their profit of Rs 3000 per ton. Also create Provident Fund for truck owners to protect their investment if China demand slackens. This PF should be contributed by miners and government.

2500 years ago, the greatest man India has given the world tried to eradicate the caste system, and failed. He was no match for the wily Brahmins and their foxy theories. That was a long time ago, and today even the Brahmins are to be found beyond religious roles, in all walks of life, in all professions. So much for an academic definition of caste today. No one, in my view, can blame anyone for being born into any caste as they are not responsible for it! For me, at least, caste today is simply a hangover from the past! With all due respect to Adi Shankara, the shadow of the rupee and not the Sudra looms larger than life, and the millions of poor Indians in India today know they can look forward to a better life through hard work and education - and what we are witnessing is nothing less than a peacceful revolution! Yes, we have nothing to lose but our casts. The new Indian, in the millions, is not so easily scared by traditional beliefs and theories and, as I said, the rupee is going to be the new star of India, defying the status quo and ushering in a new age of awareness when people are taking their lives into their own hands. Celebrate life!

Dear MR. Nascy apologies for getting ur gender wrong...but i sure have got r mentality right. U r without doubt one of the ignorant lot who like to pint fingers all around. Caste system is the truth, and it hurts everyone who opposes it. and so it does hurt me too. I am not sure it hurts u though And u seemed to have completely (and conveniently) ignored my 2 comments: it (Caste) is unfortunate that today it is used by political parties for divisive votebank poltics. i agree that this system needs to be eradicated. But i dont think u squarely blaming the the RSS and BJP is justified.. NCP in maharashtra has always depended on the Maratha votes for survival. And dont forget the first divisive politics of free india, of ensuring caste based reservations was the ploy of the Congress. these links should further clarify my point (provided u have the open mind and rational thinking to consider them in an unbiased manner, which i highly doubt) http://janamejayan.wordpress.com/2010/02/01/the-scheduled-castes-a-political-tool-of-the-congress-survival/ http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/india/Congress-uses-EBC-card-ahead-of-Bihar-polls/articleshow/6207080.cms http://www.dnaindia.com/india/report_bihar-congress-flouts-sc-st-act-classifies-members-as-per-caste_1334104 All in all i belive almost all political parties have used / are using / will use caste for politics Its no point blaming them, cause they are feeding off the sentiments of the public. No political party can/will put an end to this. It is we INDIANS( all religions plagued by caste) who have to take the first step and reject anything and everything caste based and support those who take initiatives to bridge this divide through measures like Inter-caste marriages. In this initiative the Church should have taken a primary step a long time ago as , such Casteim has no place in Christianity and also because The Church has considerably more influence over its followers, as compared to the hindus who are divided by too many deities and shrines. The church should have pioneered even more, because of the substantially less population to convince. But it has failed / or rather not even tried. It is upto us to unite and fight this menace instead of pointing fingers at particular communities blaming them for the mess, or blaming political parties as they will always use the caste card , as long as we the electorate allow them to do so. if ur not a part of the solution u definitely are a part of the problem - Sam From: Nascy Caldeira To: estb. 1994!Goa's premiere mailing list Subject: Re: [Goanet] reply to Nascy C : Caste system in Goa - Oh Sammeer. Re: [Goanet] New topic: Congress- truly secular
Sameer, Congress having party funds? Now, that's news to me. All this while it seemed as if the Congress was just a large blanket under which businessmen of varied ideologies ganged up. It has been each-man-for-himself (very few women) and freelancing in the worst sense of the word. Other, more ideology-driven parties (whatever the ideology) have had more of a party spirit. The BJP showed what this means with their plush sixth-floor party office on Atmaram Borkar Road in Panjim after less than six years in office. Looking at the drab Congress equivalent on Dayanand Bandodkar Road, near the waterfront/Mandovi, one can well wonder where all the party funds reached after dominated Goa for the 1980s, large part of the 1990s and nearly half of the first decade of this century! To be fair to Congress-style corruption, I think it offers equal opportunity, even if in a very perverse sense. It opens doors to all -- at least all who are willing to pay. Not like its contenders for power, who create artificial barriers (e.g. police recruitment, top bureaucracy, etc based on religion or caste) and then swear there's nothing one-sided about it. Take a look at the changing demography in the bureaucracy, for instance. Or the make-up of staff in some departments. You're right. Corruption can, at times, be secular! (The cost is efficiency, but this is also true as a result of communalism.) I think we have a Hobson's choice, and disagree strongly with those trying to portray things in Goa as a Congress-versus-BJP choice! (Even if only by critiquing one and staying silent about the other.) FN On 12 August 2010 22:41, sameer naik samnai...@rediffmail.com wrote: The congress has always said its the most secular party in India. I don't understand either the logic or the factual basis on which Gilbert is making some really outrageous allegations against me in the post appended below, and I suspect that there might be quite a few Goanetters with professional knowledge about plagiarism and/or cancer cure who don't as well. I find his assertions to be absurd and illogical. Out of the blue, he is accusing me of fooling and lying to Goanetters, and also plagiarizing on Goanet. I would therefore like to ask him the following questions: 1. What do you know that leads you to believe that my claims on plagiarism and cancer cure are meant to fool the people? 2. Why do you believe that to claim that I have a professional need to know about plagiarism, and that I have critically read, understood and studied the latest original papers, as I did, means that I am fooling the people? 3. Why did your jaw drop when you saw my posts on cancer cure, when the jaws of other properly qualified medical professionals with knowledge about cancer, did not? Which posts are these? 4. Could you please show me the posts of mine wherein I am using a loophole to continue to plagiarize? Such claims do not fool those who know. To some, that sounds pretty impressive. One cannot fool ALL people for ALL the time. My jaw dropped to see your posts on cancer cure. Is that your MO? It

[Goanet] Lucky to be Goan
LUCKY TO BE A GOAN By: Bennet Paes I had a visitor the other day at my office. He was a businessman from Delhi. He said to me: “Man, you’re lucky to be a Goan”. I saluted him for the compliment, but was rather inquisitive to know whether he was a fortune-teller in the guise of a businessman. I asked him why he said what he said. Then he went on to say even more: “ Goa is something different. Goans are more disciplined, god-fearing and soft-spoken which, by the way, also makes Goa a soft- target ……so on and so forth”. I heard many such accolades before, both from ‘local’ foreigners and ‘foreign’ foreigners, but was not quite sure if politicians were also included in those showers. Not surprisingly, my Delhi guest set the record straight in a series of swipes, as we dragged on to the burning topic of all times – corruption. He charged head-on: “ As I said, Goa is a soft-target for thieves, terrorists, thugs and all the t’s you can think of. Add to them the rapists and the extortionists. They lay their hands on Goa’s soft maidens, with as much ease as on its maiden lands. They call it collateral damage, and the politicians do not disagree”. “However, all this is only peanuts compared to Delhi. Here in Goa a Minister may buy all the tickets for a cricket match and sell them in the black market. In Delhi they buy the whole stadium and sell it to Real Estate developers.” I asked him why the scale is so huge in Delhi, and he explained in simple math: “ Goa is only a small State in India, while Delhi is the capital of all the 28 States and 7 union territories, therefore corruption is 28 + 7 times bigger, relatively speaking”. “The only consolation is that there is one person among the political gangs in the entire country whose dictionary is printed without the word ‘corruption’. This person is our Prime Minister. But unfortunately, he too is made a soft-target like Goans. The opposition politicians argue how he could be the leader of a country when he is not even an elected representative of the Loc Sabha. The P.M in his typical demeanour reminds them that he is an economist, not a politician, and that he is to corruption, what a saint is to Satan. “And listen to this before I dash off to catch an IA flight to Delhi which, in all probability will be delayed until tomorrow”. With sarcasm at its best, he pushed it yet further: “Discipline in India ended in 1947, the year the British took it away with them. On the other hand, Goans were lucky to live with it for 14 years longer, until Mr. Nehru got jealous of you and spread the curse to the entire nation. Perhaps now you will know what I have been saying all along, won’t you?” -

[Goanet] COLUMN: Rumour also have an ounce of truth, Mr. Home Minister
Rumour also have an ounce of truth, Mr. Home Minister By Nisser Dias nisserdias at gmail.com SMS to 9422437029 The recent statement of the Home minister Ravi Naik, that some politicians are frustrated as they are not getting hafta (commission) from drug dealers because he cracked down on sale and consumption of drugs and thus leveling false charges against him and his son as kingpins in drug trade. He made this allegation while refusing to handover the investigation of his son’s alleged involvement into the drug trade to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) is not very convincing. To my mind there are two aspects to this utterance of the Home Minister. Firstly he has put his foot in his mouth by unknowingly contradicting his own statement in January this year that there were no drugs available in Goa, but then most politicians are known to contradict themselves at some point of time in their political career. Secondly while saying that some politicians receive commission from sale of drugs in Goa and refusing to name them he has created bigger blunder and totally exposed himself for trying to muddle the issue and sweep it under the carpet in a bid to save his son Roy Naik. Let me be very clear, it is not only the Opposition legislators that have demanded that the case be handed over to the CBI. This demand has come from different quarters including the highest court in Goa, but people fail to understand why the government is refusing to handover the case to the CBI. Getting to the root of the allegation that Roy Naik is the kingpin in drug trade in northern coastal belt of Goa first surfaced in the year 2007 and the startling revelation was made by Fiona Mackeown mother of the 16 year old British victim Scarlet Keeling. At that nobody took her seriously simply because it was felt that she wanted to divert attention, but today even the coalition partners in the government are pointing fingers at Home minister’s son for his involvement in the drug trade. The second indication or rather allegation surfaced when Lucky Farmhouse girlfriend of an Israeli drug peddler Yaniv Benahim alias Atala posted a video on the You Tube wherein he boasts about his close contacts with police attached to Narcotics Cell. She later disclosed to an Israeli tabloid that she has video of the minister’s son visiting their house. Assuming that she is not speaking the truth, why would the name of the same minister’s son surface repeatedly? This is a clear indication that there is some genuineness in the allegations and the people of Goa have a right to know the truth. Taking the argument a bit further, one can say that the politicians, be it from the ruling or the Opposition has an axe to grind with the Home Minister and want to see his downfall, can the minister tell us what has two tourists Fiona Mackeown and Lucky Farmhouse has against him to malign his name? If the Home minister feels that his rivals are trying to embarrass him, why does he not handover the case to CBI and that too when Roy Naik has claimed innocence before the media, so what is the fear. Why is the minister scared of his own shadow? Otherwise the Home minister Ravi Naik is quite prompt in handing over investigation into cases to the Crime Branch (CB). If one goes by the list of the last 10 months, one can see that slightly controversial case has been transferred to the crime branch. Firstly the rape of Russian girl by a small time politician who contested against Benaulim MLA Mickky Pacheco was transferred to CB. Investigation into the release of a controversial CD ‘Dogui Bodmas’ again was transferred to CB. The investigation into the death of Nadia Torrado was transferred to CB; the investigation of involvement police officers in drug trade was transferred to CB. Now here is a case where allegation are flying left, right and centre about Roy Naik being the kingpin in drug trade, but the government is unwilling to handover the investigation to the CBI. First and foremost the Home minister should resign inorder to pave way for free and fair investigation. But no, Ravi Naik seems to be hanging on to the powers of the office to oversee any telltale signs of his son’s involvement in drug trade are wiped out, but however hard he might try the traces will still remain. Now lets us see, who all has made demands for the case to be handed over to the CBI. The High Court while hearing the bail applications of the some of the cops arrested for their involvement with drug dealers questioned the Advocate General why the case was not being transferred to CBI and they also asked whether it is because lots many skeletons would tumble out from the cupboards. The government rejected the request of the High Court to handover the case to CBI. Then came the BJP who initially demanded CBI investigation into the case and followed it up by making the same demand during the assembly session
[Goanet] Caste and creed in Goa
I think in Da mao there is no caste among the Catholics. I wonder why? Is there any study in this respect? I wonder why in Goa the Catholics are defensive? BC My reply is this: it is simple. All Indians are Hundu Hindu, Hindu Christian and even some are Hindu Muslims; as one Arab muslim said to me once long ago in a Gulf state. When I said to him there are many muslims in India; he spokke of them as Hindu Muslim. That surprised me then.
